The increasing adoption of Houdini into design centered, lightweight pipelines opens up new possibilities for motion designers when it comes to complex, generative artworks in 3D. While Houdini hasn't explicitly targeted designers, it offers an ever increasing set of Tools which can be adapted for fast, art focused workflows. In this talk, Moritz Schwind will present a few hidden gems in Houdini's latest release which allow for the effective creation of procedural artworks in a creative environment.
Moritz Schwind. Be it pixels, hardware, code or cameras - if it’s interesting, Moritz is gonna take it apart. And sometimes even reassemble it. In his spare time, he likes to dabble with code and create generative artwork. He claims his early exposure to QBasic is no help at all when working in Houdini, Blender, Processing or Arduino. But it might have been what started his fascination for the boundaries of code and art. When not wreaking havoc to any intriguing devices around him, he works as a freelance Technical and Art Director. His more recent areas of interest cover the use of scientific algorithms in generative design and the application of AI in creative fields. Together with Manuel Casasola Merkle he runs Entagma, a learning platform focused on generative design using mainly SideFX Houdini.

that team really makes a 3d mograph a valuable and existing thing for mogrpah artists who are done with cinema4d limitations, thanks for being in there!!!

He is not only very with houdini but also a very good narrator. I mean if you’ll watch this video it will inspire you to try houdini.

Thank you, Moritz!! This was excellent. It would be a dream to see a tutorial handling the best way to actually export a finished sim from Houdini to Blender. It's missing somehow. Alembic? FBX? How to prepare the scene / sim for export? How to treat it after import in Blender (assigning different final materials etc.)? I think many would love to have this coming from you especially.

As an occasional lurker on this channel, I'm almost convinced that I should dive deep into Houdini (and skip learning C4D which I'm considering right now)

This might sound dumb but the thing that helped me a lot with houdini was using Nuke. Like shaping the flow of data mindset. Just like you said. I've tried houdini in 2015 when I was still using C4d/AE and it was just alien to me. I switched to Nuke in 2016 and tried houdini off six months ago and I counldn't believe how much smoother it was.

I also switched form C4D thanks to you guys. I recently had to re render a project in C4D with arnold and I'm shocked at how inestable it is. I literally had like 10 crashes in an hour. Mosty from arnold. The thing that I love fron hou is that arnold can crash separately, and relaunch wihtouth a hitch.

I just have to say that I'm incredibly jealous of Vincent... Having Moritz as a good friend that's not only willing but eager to teach him Houdini... relationship goals. Ha

Modeling IS fun in Houdini, if you know how to do it properly. But, I can agree with the fact, its not yet there for modeling certain things, mostly organic, for hard surface its another story.

I'm a 3D noob and want to learn particle simulation + motion graphics and I'm leaning towards C4D for its mograph capabilities...but I don't wish to invest in plugins like X particles, Realflow and so on.... Can Houdini help me achieve same/similar results without using any 3rd party external plugins?

Yes, even better results than X-particles and Reaflow I would say...
