Here in part 4 of Ls swapping my Saab Dad wagon we run into an issue with the clutch! The flywheel is the same exact size, but its the wrong crank pattern! This will throw a little bit of a wrench in the program as now ill have figure out something else that will work!

On the frame rail I would consider boxing it with 3/16 inch plate to bring back some of the strength

You should get a lathe and a mill. They actually make combo entry level lathe/mills that are relatively small and affordable. Either that or if you can find old used ones for cheap those are the best quality.

Look up the Saturn sl2 ls4 swap videos and forums about it. It has been done before and with that motor and trans combo for it to get the power to the trans. You might need to make another spot for the subframe to bolt up to on the front passenger side

on that support on the front of the engine, what you can do to make it reinforced is notch the subframe and put the bar not just touching the subframe, but resting on it, so that the own weight of the engine will already make it stiffer and safer.

So that bar that he welded on the front of the subframe to suport the engine mount is what exactly? It suports half the engine on two welds, my sugestion is that the bar goes through the subframe instead of ending on It.

I know its Just a mock, he is not Haggard garage, but even with the best bead of stacked coins with perfect penetration i would not Trust that mount with an engine with almost twice the weight of the original.

Honestly feel like this is more work then it’s really worth. Hats of for wanting to do something different but unless you tube frame the front end this is going to be a death trap!! Cut the front off and start from scratch

I was going to tell you to check out the Fiero forums! As a Fiero owner that did a supercharger 3800 swap I can attest to having to do a ton of work on it myself. There isn't the greatest aftermarket for the cars so Fiero owners tend to do it themselves. Good luck, and I can't wait to see how the Saab turns out.

Just tossing this out there, a machine shop could indicate your flywheel in and redrill it for the 5.3 crank pretty easily.

I have had a few thoughts about this saab build but from a safety aspect I just don't think having having the engine in the transverse configuration is going to work as they're just not built to take that long an engine in there as they don't have the width for it but I may have an alternative option for you and you may come to the same conclusion but lets see. Fit the engine longitudinally and make the saab a rear wheel drive drift-able car as you can get the rear wheel drive setup from an awd car, the only big hurdles then might be a modified sub-frame, firewall, tunnel, shifter and prop-shaft. Obviously there'll still be the engine wiring and management system but you may have less hassle doing it that way. You might have to use the cv. joints to hold the hub and bearings together at the front as I doubt you'd get an alternative option for the front hubs a.b.s. etc It would probably still be the only one of its kind and unique in that sense and might be a lot of work and a challenge to mount but it's still gonna be less likely to fold in half due to the frame rigidity being lessened to get it to fit the way you're currently thinking of. It would be pretty cool to see done right and I hope some of the comments here get your imagination and determination fired up again and get you back eager to carry on the builds we enjoy watching taking shape, end the stalemate you're having with the saab and where to go from here ;) lol

Any real machine shop should be able to machine you a flywheel, im not sure how hard a flywheel is but it would need to be case hardened or what ever they do there then obviously press the ring gear onto it. If i had to guess it would take proabably a whole day to do. Another option is maybe to take and have the center cut out of the flywheel and press in and weld an 8 bolt center in then remachine it flat that would be much easier but im not sure what kind of torque that thing would handle. All of that would have to be precision stuff because you dont want to unbalance the engine and wipe the crank out

I would recommend looking into the Cobalt F23 Getrag Flywheel Should be the same bolt pattern and might fit your application with a proper clutch 🤷 we swap f40's in balt all the time 😉

Dont get anything SPEC their quality is hit or miss. If you do an OEM type single disc, look for Valeo F810ds clutch facing, it has a .35 - .4 friction coefficient. You can't get organic lining better than that. I'm building my own clutch kit for my Volvo project, and my setup is good for 820 ft-lbs new and nearly completely worn out of should be good for 775 ft-lbs.

Too get a twin disc made for a conquest/stsrion, quatermaster builds them off a factory auto flex plate. Maybe they could do the same for you

Yeah. I would have to agree with the statements. If you have to go though all of this work, I would just cut the front end off and tube chassis it. There is no reason to go though all of this work for just a 300 hp engine when the stock configuration could have done this. that and the work to go thought to reinforce what you cut out?

Weld the holes in the flywheel up and have them machined/drilled to the proper pattern. Been done many times

No disrespect intended, but the shorter shaft with the bearing that mounts to the back of the block is called a jack shaft, while the short CV axles that mount to the hubs are called either half shafts, or CV axles. My Civic with an Integra B series swap has the same setup.

at this point your better off front cut tube chassis kinda thin the way you going to end up cutting the factory frame rails is going to make really unsafe also in front end collision it might push the whole engine in the cab so you might try to make so it fold downwards in a impact so it fold instead pushing in / a clutch company might be able to make you a flywheel with t he right bolt pattern and the rite size and clutch type for the Saab trans cluchmaster made that clutch for honodaru k24 on a Subaru trans so they can probably help you

Do they not make a manual impala ss? Get a flywheel from one of they do use the pressure plate from that and the friction plate and space cylinder from the Saab and space the slave to meet the pressure plate? That’s how we have done a few engine swaps over here in the U.K.

Trevor, I cannot find a or 5 to this swap or a finished product. Were you able to get this Saab engine swap completed? I am curious as I have a 2006 9-3 combi with a 1.8 and it top end sucks in the car. The body and interior are prestine. I wanted to build a true sleeper and was considering the LS v8. But it seems to be a tremendous job.

Just make the Civic an AWD with the drive train of a CRV and turn it into a decent drag racing 1/4 mile car to have fun with. I do like thye idea of an AWD LS in a Saab but with all that material removed from the structure of the car I will be very concerned. Just my opinion :)

Can't you just cut out a circular block off plate for that v6 flywheel, fill the old holes, weld on the "big washer" you essentially just made & drill out 8 new bolt holes?

Dean Graham easier just to get a billet flywheel made up you can’t/shouldn’t do what you suggested it’s a rotating mass and If it’s off balance it’ll vibrate like crazy or worse explode and you don’t want a flywheel coming loose at 6-7000 rpm it’ll ruin your day

@@msengineeringdavid3702 That would be fine on a regular 5.3 but that 5.3 doesn't have the starter bolt holes in the block and even if it did the cv axel/jackshaft would be in the way because the starter is located on the passenger side/backside of the engine. the only way I see a starter working with that motor/trans setup is notching the trans and having a special starter that spins backwards cause it would have to face the engine instead of facing the trans.

No hate trevor, but this could kill your channel. In order to stay relevant in the KZbin algorithm, related videos, views, etc. You have to make pretty rapid progress sadly. It's just the way the platform works now, people are impatient; not speaking for your entire fan base but it is a thing. This project will be sick once finished but be weary and dont spend to much time on it one given week. Just some food for thought! Love the videos and wanna see you around for a while!

Not to mention but he pulled the stock Saab engine, cleaned up the shop, test fitted the ls on the Saab subframe, tweaked with the mounts and fitment to get a rough idea on placement. Did honestly a lot of work. Probably if he wanted to could have got mounts made and the motor and tranny situated if he would just buy custom axles. Obviously redrill the flywheel or get one made. Point is, he will have it all worked out before he disassembles his beloved daily
