I don't think he was underrated. Rather he was so iconic with Apollo Creed that it was difficult to remove him from that role. Even in Mandalorian many wouldn't say "Oh look, it's Carl Weathers!" but rather say "Oh look! It's Apollo Creed!"

Carl Weathers is really amazing in III. The anger, the disappointment, the sadness at what his great rival has become and what that might say about him. He's putting it all in his performance
@AirLancer11 ай бұрын
To be fair, Rocky goes from being a complete past-his-prime nobody in Rocky to having 10 title defenses after beating Apollo at the start of Rocky III. By and large, he's known as a dominant champion, which is more notable since Rocky's time at the top only really started after he turned 30.
@emirlsanchos630211 ай бұрын
@@AirLancerThe downside is that those 10 challengers were pre-chosen by both Mickey and the boxing commission. It devastated Rocky to learn his trainer was holding his hand the whole time despite how good intentioned Mickey was, leading to going soft and issues of self-worth after Clubber beat Rocky.

He was at his best in Rocky III. A man who couldn’t except defeat & then to see his opponent lose to a lesser fighter reinvigorate his hunger & desire not only to help Rocky but to Chanel that disappointment into motivation for Rocky to regain the title. He did so more because for Rocky to lose to Clubber especially in the mental state or condition he was in was an insult to his legacy in the ring. Him training Rocky to regain the Eye of the Tiger as to speak was more about restoring the man he faced in Rocky & Rocky II. Apollo was in fact doing this for himself and for Rocky at the same time.

I think I was the only 9 year old Irish kid in 1975 Chicago that wanted to grow up to be Apollo Creed! The scene in ROCKY 2 where he’s training (6:54 of this video) is the reason I begged my father to get me a heavy bag. Rest In Peace sir.
@clevelandwilliams59226 ай бұрын
Apollo Creed training in Rocky II was a true nemesis to Rocky. He was focused, driven and purposeful to redeem himself in that ring. He put almighty effort and failed. In the end he rebuilt Rocky to regain his edge become a 2 time world heavyweight champion but also to deal with the ultimate foe in Drago in Rocky IV

What I loved about the Apollo Creed character was that he was a total machine and as hard as nails, but he was also a decent human being with a strong moral centre, and yes, a lot of that was the writing, but Carl's performance was the thing that made it work. The relationship between Rocky and Apollo was brilliant, they found redemption in each other. It's one of the reasons the Rocky films were so successful. RIP Carl Weathers.

I work as a school bus driver and I overheard some high school children who I've known for years talking about superhero movies. I said to them that if they wanted hero movies they should watch Arnie, Vandam, Willis and Stallon especially Rocky and Rambo. All night I was waiting for my manager to phone me to say parents had complained that I had told their little angels to watch violent movies. The next morning the children told me they watched Rocky with their dads, and loved the movie, but all their dads said was "don't tell your mum" 😂
