Since i was a kid believe me i have no talents at all. Even dancing, singing, and etc. Seeing my cousin inspired me to draw too, but she works on traditional and i decided to work digital. And i found an app for Android "medibang paint" i started to practice my self but i thought it's gonna be easy, i was wrong and i never give up because i need at least one talent, that will help me to escape from this boring life.then one i also learning an animation because i believe arts has also connect on animations like different angles or etc. But yes it's going to be harder when i do animations, but still i it's my dream to become an animator digital artist someday. I found this channel because it's inspire me more, thanks man.

"The comparison becomes so torturous for them that they would rather walk out on their dreams, stop living for themselves, and choose a sheltered life in a job their hate" Literally sent shivers down my spine. I really want to be an animator but I always doubt my abilities and whether it would be a good decision. My secondary choice (and more favorable to my parents) as a software engineer seems like the better option but I know that I'm gonna end up unhappy even if I do take it. Its so frustrating.

I'm always afraid of my own self expression because I feel like I have nothing evocative or a new philosophical outlook to say. Of course, I'll go for it anyways, after I get funding from future business ventures. I'll have to see how many ideas I have survive or evolve until then.

i felt the same way when making this video. I felt like i had been echoing what other people had already said at some point in time. But it's not always about being first. Some things need to be repeated in different times and places for emphasis. if you don't have a totally unique idea, you can repeat a good idea in a slightly different way.

@@HowardWimshurst Thank you so much for taking the time to read any of our comments, man. Yes, of course, something that can be evolved into a new period can have potential. That's worth it, and it just has to be adapted well. I have a sort of dread when I feel that I have to consume a lot of new media, like literature, cinema, graphic novels, and other writings in order to finally understand what view I want to give to others based on my experiences and thought processes. I want to get on with it and start making things, but I feel even with starting pieces of art (that's what all stories are), I might be missing something I may not know. This is a huge part of my low self-esteem. I guess, perhaps, maybe, just maybe, I can take a leap of faith with myself. Even if I only make 1 piece in my entire existence, and it influences at least 1 person for a better world for them, then I'll be at peace.

Something that most young artists need to be reminded of, is that you still have so much time. I can only name 2 artists that started off incredibly skilled at a young age. The people you look up to, probably only got to where they are after several several years. You have time. Don't feel rushed. Pace yourself. Stop comparing yourself to someone with triple the amount of experience. You will get there. I promise. Take your time.

Its not the equipment its the artist, your life is never set in stone rather you have multiple pathways and whatever you choose is your end result. You won't know whats gonna happen, so don't stop trying. Example: I'm sitting down thinking about animation, what do I do? Path:1 Sit and procrastinate, Path:2 Try to just draw what I feel like because regardless of what time is gonna pass. I choose path:2 and there are many more paths, just focus at one.

The problem is that i saw the animation i was making for your contest and thought it looked so basic compared to it. I found myself putting it off and not working on it. Ty for this video because sometimes you can't help and compare yourself to other artists or animators.

This video has helped me. Thank you. Just a few years ago, when I was going to college, I picked up drawing again. I have dropped it and picked it up many times. I have since dropped it again. But I caught myself saying the old line, "I can't draw" and all I have to do is walk over to my old sketchbook and take a look at the things I drew there. I can see the progress I made, I know that this thought, probably from the ego, is a self-destructive one. I hope the next time I pick up a pencil and draw again I don't put it down. I also enjoy building things in Minecraft, and found myself in this downward spiral you talked about, comparing the stuff I built and was so proud of, until I saw the things they are making at Hermitcraft. It knocked me down, took the wind out of my sails, and so I looked for help. I wanted thoughts to counter the self-destructive ones from my ego. My ego is afraid, and it is from this fear that it tries to protect me, but no amazing artists is a fearful one. So I came to KZbin for some motivational videos, for some support, and found this one, among others. It is a good question to ask myself.. Why am I not more afraid of becoming an old man who never realized his full potential? I can already see into that terrain, here in middle age. I do not like the view. I am not sure I will find my way back to the sheer joy of just drawing, sketching or building. But I will try, starting today!

That "self-fulfilling prophecy" hit me the hardest. Screw not having a state-of-the-art drawing tablet. I've been drawing on a LT using a mouse for years. The grind was excruciatingly slow. But I believed that it was meant for me. And let me just say that I was born and raised in a place where everything is pretty much laid out for you and people expect you to go through all of it. We didn't even have any art-related classes to go to. It's just not part of our local society. But I was born with this passion. And now I finally got enough to buy myself a decent pen tablet display. You'll only every feel the satisfaction very rarely but when it does hit you, it can sweep away your doubts. Even just temporarily. So if you're reading this and you're in a similar struggle as I am, hang in there buddy. Nobody ever tells me this, so let me tell you because you just might need to hear/read it from someone else... Your passion for art, in whatever form it takes, isn't worthless.

Wow, dude, this is too much. I am actually crying. Thank you seriously. This is literally inspiring, I've been stuck in this in what feels like forever, and I know that after I live this video I've still got a lot to struggle with. However, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you for this video. I'm going to make the worst art I can imagine xD. I've been stuck in the mindset of "aiming high" for far too long; unconsciously comparing myself to my twitter feed or art station, thinking to my self, "oh man I wish I was that good, this art is awesome" when I could be out here making things that make me happy, things that make me feel like I'm making progress. I will make progress, and I will be back here for motivation for sure, thank you again. Know that you are also doing great work here, changing lives.

I needed this. I gave up on drawing some years ago now, and I recently decided to try to get back into it. However, nothing I can put down seems right. I draw a few lines, erase them, and start over. Again, and again. It never looks like what I have in my mind, because my mind is filled with all these amazing works by all these people far more experienced than me. I got disheartened. Today, I'm trying to draw a lily. Something small, and simple. I got the stamens and pistil to a point where I'm really happy with them, but I just can't get the petals up to a standard I'm happy with. Even trying for the utmost simplicity, I just can't make it work. But I'm going to keep trying, because I know how good I'll feel when I finally get it right, and that I can't ever live up to my own standards. Especially if I never try.

This was so meaningful… For anyone who’s interested, here’s my story: I’ve studied animation before but very limitly, and wanted to apply to an actual art academy and right before the finishline came a horrible rejection… I was devastated, now, 5 years later, guess who got brave and quit his job, moved across country and is now in artschool!!! Cloud 9 you would think right?! Fearful is the word for my experience so far, straight up panick. What if they find out I can’t draw that well at all… this fear I actually always had, making me not even touch my drawing pencils cuz I’m scared. and watching this video was a breath of fresh air for me chasing the scary thunderclouds away. I’m working hard on my anxious personality, knowing there is more to enjoy than to be actually afraid of. I’m at school to learn, to develop, not to be at professional level already…. Make bad art….. I’m going to write this on top of my sketch book! With: feel free to enjoy it, underneath! Thnx 💛

im really glad you address this, being a big successful artist. people in general like to support the big artists but will quickly turn against smaller artists when they show any sign of jealousy, never really try to understand how they feel or helping to dig them out of these bad mindsets that are so easy to get trapped in. every twitter post has number of likes in plain sight, with live updates so you watch the number go up if you leave the post open. it just BREEDS jealousy.

I always felt ashamed of the way i drew everytime my friend would show me something of hers she spent in a day, and it looked so good i had to look away. other times i'll be scrolling through the internet and watching and looking at drawing and animations, and every time i saw someone with all this love and support..it ate me up inside cause i knew i'd never be able to get that type of support from anyone. this video made me cry because it says everything i do as a young wannabe artist, i get jealous of people who are better then me, and i always though there would be nothing i could do about it. this video hurts me where i feel as a 14 yr old artist, I've always wanted to be like my friends in this challenge, but i never could because i wasn't good enough for them, whenever i ask for help...its like i'm being ignored or the answers are something stupid like "idk, i was just born good at drawing". it still hurts to see the people i knew grew up and became so good, as im going onto my 5th year of drawing, i've started to lose all feeling in drawing, i last out in anger and rip the pages, carve into them, cry, every mad emotion came out at once, its a shame i burnt all my art stuff to ashes and nothing more because of jealously....

Thanks Howard. I'm 49, been in jobs I hate all my life and would truly love to do something with art and animation but have doubts. This world seems to promote the idea that you have to be the best, otherwise there is no point in trying. You've inspired me to give it a try

hell yeah man you are 49 years young - so much ahead of you!!! Grab life. Be greedy with it because you only get one shot, no respawn! If only the best succeed, there would only be one successful animator, and that's not true. There are thousands of us!! All having a great time! I'm not the best and yet it's going great! You just gotta be reliable. Being reliable is so underrated. Show up every day.

Dude holy shit I really needed to hear this, I’m currently creating my own manga and I’m pretty confident in my writing skills and not my drawing, everyday I’ve been practicing I even bought a drawing tablet and clip studio ex to keep drawing but as I see others and their drawings I got discouraged but this video really helped me, Thank you

Good stuff. I knew a lot of this, but I needed to hear it from someone else. And also that movie those kids were making with the cell phone and E-machine was truly inspiring. Thank you.

Thank you for making this video. I was slowly feeling the tendrils of my depression that was creeping into my mind. What you said... Where you said I should be afraid of not creating at all instead of being afraid of making something bad and disappointing not just other people but myself... It feels like a wake up call for me today. Right now I am drawing for a children's book for a client and I am feeling upset with myself for not making something for myself. I am drawing for somebody else just to earn a little, I am risking myself to pursue arts instead of having a corporate job and yet I feel like I am making a lot of wrong choices. Lots of second guessing, plenty of doubt and regret and fear. KZbin recommend me your video. And I was feeling so lost I decided to click your video just to find an understanding with myself. What you said helped me a whole lot. You are right. Everything you said resonate me. I have the talent, the tools, the right equipment and whatever amount of experience that I gained as a small artist (7yrs of drawing on and off) it is enough for me to create more art as much as I can. Your video gave me enough confidence boost to continue on this path instead of falling out. I will come back to watch this again to remind myself. Thank you Howard!

Thank you for leaving this comment, it was really nice to read and I'm glad you are feeling better about your work after watching. It's all inside you: motivation, inspiration, experience, resourcefulnes, skill. You have everything you need inside, as long as you make the choice - and keep making the choice - to just get on with the drawings and use what you have got!

I don't know if this is a sign, but I was on such a major art slump. Hearing this has opened my eyes to get back to where I left off, and when I looked back at my unfinished art, they do not look as daunting anymore. So thank you for this, this is such a blessing.
