I love the profound mystery of the Incarnation. It is truly the work of a Loving Triune God in participation with the Blessed Virgin Mary for our redemption and freedom from the slavery of sin. Also love this part of the Credo to bow in reverence of the Incarnation: "Qui propter nos homines et propter nostram salutem descendit de caelis. Et incarnatus est de Spiritu Sancto ex Maria Virgine, et homo factus est. " For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life...John 3:16

What Miracle that the Supreme Being that is Eternally Above Everything decided to enter His Creation and become of the same Generis as His Creation , to the point of desiring to live with the most Empoverished and Rejected of our Kind .Such is the Benevolence of God that He wanted to eternally have a part of Humanity within Himself (The Incarnation and Ascension) and give us a Part of Him to be Within us (The Eucharist , most notably) .

What I have never understood is why didn’t God say in the Old Testament that he would come in the flesh? The points about messiah are extremely contentious between Jews and Christian’s. Why not just make it clear he would come? For example Isaiah 53 or Daniel 9 why not say he himself would come ? Not just another messiah? Thanks!

Aquinas would necessarily have believed that heaven was not that far above him, and hell some way below him. I find it inconceivable that he would have asserted his philosophy with such self confidence, or possibly even at all, if he had learned that the earth - far from being the centre of God's creation - was just one nano-speck of dust in a universe of a million-squillion nano-specks.

Thank you. Just as a thought, I was greatly distracted by hearing about why God became "human" versus why God became incarnate or why God became man? Which is the Latin English translation of Saint Thomas. I ask because that way we avoid a general conception of humanity apart from their natural sex, typical also of the angelicism wherein ideology of gender may easily be inserted, not incarnate. Ergo, going back to the sources: what does St. Thomas Aquinas teach? Thank you in advance BC

First, let's look at the relevant Latin vocabulary. Latin distinguishes between "homo" (human being, man, male or female) and "vir" (man, male); and vir can be contrasted with "femina" and "mulier", which both mean woman, but homo includes both man (male) and woman (female). The verb "incarno" means to make flesh; in the passive mood, it is to be made flesh, to become incarnate. If you want to say someone or something has been made flesh, you can use the perfect passive tense, "incarnatus est." And there is the passive infinitive "incarnari", to be made flesh. Now as to what St. Thomas taught. In Summa Theologiae, Part III, Question 1, Article 1 ( aquinas.cc/la/en/~ST.III.Q1.A1 ), he states the first objection as "Videtur quod non fuerit conveniens Deum incarnari.": "It would seem that it was not fitting for God to become incarnate." You can see that he is using the passive infinitive "incarnari", which means "to be made flesh" or to become incarnate. In that article, I don't see that he uses either the word "homo" or the word "vir", though he does mention human flesh "carni humanae" in quoting St. Augustine. I don't have time to scan through the whole Summa to see if he ever used the word "homo" or "vir" in reference to the Incarnate Word. However, Thomas certainly accepted the statement in the Nicene Creed (also called Niceno-Constantipolitan Creed, www.preces-latinae.org/thesaurus/Symbola/Nicaenum.html ): Et incarnatus est de Spiritu Sancto ex Maria Virgine, et homo factus est. And by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. You can see that the Creed uses both the words "incarnatus" (incarnate, made flesh) and "homo" (man, human being). Of course, in becoming a human being, He had to become either male or female, and in view of Luke 1:31 it is obvious that He became a male, the firstborn (and only) son of the Virgin Mary. So in becoming incarnate, He (necessarily) became a human being (homo), and in becoming a human being he became (not by necessity, but by the choice of divine wisdom) a man (vir). But the Creed states "homo factus est," without mention of sex. The point of this, I think, is that God the Son united Himself with, the whole of human nature, male and female, not just the male part of it, in order to redeem all humans, male and female.

@@gregoryweber5667 Thank you for your feedback comment and reply. I did check the Summa in Latin later and did see the actual word is incarnari, hence incarnate. While certainly he has a human nature particularly in the masculine, man. I am certain that homo, also means man as also vir. Since in Scripture it also reads "Ecce homo" behold the man. Certainly man is also inclusive of both nature of man since for St. Thomas as well as for Scripture and St. Paul, it was the woman who was taken out of man. Anyways, I also took note that St. Thomas later addresses more particularly the particulars of humanity assumed wherein he says there is no general conception of humanity apart from the particulars, in other words the universal apart from the individual man. Hence, he treats of this in particularly in S.T. III. Q.4. AA.4-6. Ido appreciate your reply again, I will gladly and slowly at leisure look into these articles since the Incarnation is such a great mystery. Thanks in J.M.J.

So, I checked and certainly Saint Thomas treats without any way around, except opinions that are heresies, that God became incarnate with a particulars of a man and therefore, treat of a real Incarnation instead of conceptional. He cites St. John Damascene and the Ecumenical Councils. Another problem that I have found is the language that is very deceptive without an affirmation that God became man or incarnate properly as both the sense of the Creed and the Summa, that He is human being. Sorry, St. Thomas and the councils just do not use that word. Their language is very accurate and requires patience, attention and discernment according to Saint Augustine and him: Christ is a Divine Person with two distinct natures, a Divine and a human nature. Therefore, the suppositum, the hypostasis or subsistence or Person is solely One, the Divine and therefore, this would need to be affirmed as well. Otherwise, one in order to avoid the heresies of Eutyches and Nestorius according to Saint Thomas, would by ignorance fall into them as he says of recent masters in his time. I cannot make this stuff up! I am reading and re-reading and just reporting it per ST.III.2.6. I am also getting a lot of good formation with his treatment on the Communication of Idioms. Why isn't this supposed incarnation foretold by any of the previous prophets or by god himself when he hung around with the Hebrews for forty years straight? Not even the previous messiah said a word about it? How could god all of a sudden be ok with the innocent taking the punishment for the guilty when he earlier have said that very rhing is not ok?

Because they didn't know. This question is about what is the nature of revelation. Short answer is that God's revealation was not still complete at the time. Catholics belive that divine revelation's content is completed with the death of the last of Christ Apostles.

​@@checkmate5338 Well, I'm afraid that to answer that would require to know about God's will at its fullness, something our nature per se are not capable of. It could be simply said beacause of God, in His imeense wisdom and goodness, willled it. But I think there's, at least, somewhat well fundamented theological arguments about it. In christianianity there is an theological object called Economy of Salvation also referd as the Divine Economy wich is a part of revelation. It deals with God’s creation and management of the world, particularly his plan of salvation accomplished by Christ through the Church; in short, it concerns about what is by any means necessary designed as God's plan for salvation of mandkind. § 1103 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church also refers to the "Economy of Salvation" as the "economy of Revelation." As you can see those matters are somehow linked in a way of what one must to do in order to be saved. Jesus sacrifice redemmed all mankind but it didn't eliminate human will. Therefore it's up to every individual to apply it or to implement it voluntarily in their life. But I have a feelling your doubt will be more well clarified is this new series of videos - "Christ and the Sacraments" playlist. God bless you.

One falsehood needs another to back it up! This is true in so many ways, including sadly, religion! If you accept the 'trinity' then this in turn affects the coming to earth of God's son! If 'God' is always the 'three persons', then the Son could NOt have actually come to earth! ( this would have left the 'trinity' 2/3rds for not just 33 years but the three days Jesus was dead! , short! )Hence the teaching of the 'incarnation' ( not a bible word!) Just a 'human nature' came while the 'spiritual nature REMAINED! thus a denial that the complete & total son actually came down from heavan as Jesus said he did! You eaither then believe in the 'trinity' OR that "God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten son" for you and Me! I know what I believe!
