Three new Moto G8 phones, one review: starting with the Moto G8 Power Lite, a super affordable phone with a low resolution LCD screen and a basic MediaTek processor, then the Moto G8, a slightly more expensive phone that still gives you a low resolution screen, but comes with a faster processor, and finally, the Moto G8 Power, the most exciting in the family, with a decent 1080p display and a massive battery.

Why do people always talk about the weight of the phone? I've never seen anybody walking around like "Damn, I need a smaller phone. This one's fucking my back up."

I personally like a heavy phone, only because it feels more solid and less cheap. BUT it sure is NOT a make or break for me when buying a phone.

I just bought the Moto G Power... and have tested it for about a week now. Speed of the phone is average... not lightning speed while surfing web. Stereo speakers are awesome for this price point. The camera is surprisingly good in good lighting. Don't expect much in low light... but for the savings compared to a flagship phone I could by a nice slr camera which would work better than any phone camera. Videos are decent. I take more photos than video so haven't tested video much. Wide angle photos look good too... especially for lower MP count. I never uses my phone to make electronic payments...so I don't care about NSF...if that's what it's called. The battery life is good. I use my phone a lot during day so probably only get a day of usage out of mine... not sure how people are getting two or three days or of one charge? But I keep my screen really bright too which cuts down battery life. Overall this phone is a steel for less than $200... nothing can compare at this price. I wouldn't spend more after knowing how great this is for the price. I'm not a gamer who needs more graphic power. Screen is really good...very bright, clear, great resolution. They are pretty much giving the phone away at this price... I really can't tell much difference between this and a flagship phone. I've had many flagships and this is better that they were. It's just a damn phone. People get sold to easily by companies trying to sell high priced flagships that really don't give you much more for your money than what you get with this phone.

@marcususa

Because you would constantly get notifications about nothing. They are doing ZERO to help the consumer not get ads. They are doing ZERO effort to filter messages. You sign up for something, even order from Amazon and they have to email you every day. "How was your product delivery?". Next day, "Please rate the service". Next day, "Blah blah blah". You would get nothing but blinking lights. Then because Moto G is heavily Google based you have to get these "silent notifications". If they are silent THEY KNOW YOU DON'T WHAT THEM!!! But are they going to do anything about it? I can't even have Facebook app on my phone or I get ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, all day long. Errr. rant is over, but that is why we don't see notification lights because the powers at be are too weak to stand up to the almighty advertising dollar. Ok, rant is not over. I will continue. When you watch a video, how helpful is it to click 3-5 seconds into a video ad so you can continue a video like this one selling their product essentially? If the marketing geniuses had any brains, they would put a static ad banner between the video and this comment section. Then, as you watch the video without interruptions you would see the ad banner and could click it. They could put multiple ads throughout the video and you wouldn't have to pause watching. Just click the banner ads you like and it would launch into a new tab. Then when the video was over you could then go to the sites. Will they figure this out? Second and final rant over.

@@marcususa I agree with you, it's outrageous but I'm sure they could program a notification light to only illuminate for calls, texts and v-mails. I liked the feature but realistically isn't that what screen notifications are now?

I want to purchase the G8, but is there a way to turn off Wifi calling? I have the Moto One and it has been a nightmare in more than one way. One of the terrible things about it is I cannot turn off the Wifi-calling as I have been able to do on other Moto phones. I have called Motorola directly and have searched online and no one knows how to turn it off. If I can turn it off on the Power then I will purchase it tomorrow. Thank you.

I own the Moto G Power, which is the U.S. variant of the G8 Power. Great phone for the price. Battery life is amazing, stereo speakers get really loud, has a headphone jack, and the screen is pretty good for a 1080p IPS. Still wish it were a 1440p OLED though. It's very obviously not as sharp as the Nexus 6 I owned before it. Update: The phone's holding up well overall. Moto Actions for flashlight, camera, Do Not Disturb, and screenshots are super convenient and should be something of an industry standard. Little features like that make using the phone a lot more enjoyable than it would be without them. For the things I don't like, the fact that it's an IPS display is something I thought I could deal with, but the backlight coming on whenever the screen is in use or when peeking notifications is bothering me more than I thought it would, especially when using the phone at night. Understand that this is coming from someone who used a phone with a really nice AMOLED display for the better part of four years. The fingerprint reader is garbage. It works properly maybe 25% of the time when my hands are clean and dry, and it never works when my hands are wet. I get that they wanted it to be as fully featured a phone as it could be for the price, but with a fingerprint reader this bad they could have omitted it and shaved down the price a bit. To conclude this impromptu review, the Moto G Power is overall an excellent phone for the price, especially for heavy users. It's very obviously not a flagship phone, though, and people who are upgrading from an old flagship phone (like me) will be bothered by the cheap feeling plastic body, lower res non-OLED screen, and bad fingerprint reader. It's a great experience for the budget conscious, and more than most people need, but it seems I'm a little pickier than the average person. I'll be selling the phone, and saving up for a OnePlus 7 Pro, which seems to fit my preference for flagships more

Awesome, I'm upgrading from my Moto Z3 this month and want to stick with Moto. I love my Z3 but there physical digitizer/ screen is trash. In the last 2 years I've replaced it 3 times after a minor fall, or my keys landing on it as I was emptying my pockets onto the bed, has caused a minor crack but then the screen goes completely black. I really wish I had switched a year earlier when they were still using gorilla glass.

Great review but that's odd. The G Power I tested the fingerprint reader worked great 97% of the time and it was instantaneous. I was testing Moto G Power and TCL 10L together. Since both are pretty much same specs except the 10L comes with 6GB RAM. Which greatly helps. I prefer the 10L over Moto G even though that has 4000Mah of power compared to 5000Mah of Moto G. Why? More RAM. Better display quality. You'll notice that a lot in Netflix. TCL is much sharper. Finger print unlock is snappy but the Face unlock is snappier. Yes for $250 TCL has face unlock. 4 cameras compared to 3 on Moto. Dual flash. Has NFC so Google Pay works. Thinner bezel. So even though you have 1000Mah less battery than Moto, you get a lot more features.

My hubby and I both have fingerprint access on our same maker and model phones, his works 100% of the time. Mine...NEVER NOT ONCE...The depth of the ridges on you prints are what the reader uses. If you have a job that wears your finger tips down a reader no matter the make or model of phone won’t work

Love the big battery of G8, but found out G8 doesn't support Miracast, so can only cast to TV with Chromecast, which requires a router. I can't cast since I have no router, I use my unlimited mobile data instead of wasting hundreds of $ per year on internet provider. Was able to cast with old phone that supports Miracast with Netgear Push2TV. Wish Chromecast didn't require a router, stupid limitation. Returning it for a phone that supports Miracast. Why not support Miracast? Ha! Google acquired Motorola in 2015. So requiring Google Chromecast to be able to cast to TV forces G8 users to buy Chromecast. What a surprise!

I have an iPhone se 2020 but am thinking of giving up on Apple as far as phones go. Siri is a really big drawback to the iPhone for me. Siri’s comprehension is 🤢 and the iphones dictation is subpar for the price. I need to use speech to text a LOT and even on my cheaper androids back in 2015 I was able to get my spoken word to translate well on the speech to text option. I never had the google assistant fail me like Siri does regularly. I constantly find that alarms I told Siri to set weren’t set or were improperly set so that important information is missing. I don’t know what’s up with the included calendar app. I don’t hate Apple it’s just that as for phones, it’s not for me. The iPad, though, it outranks every other tablet I’ve ever used so I will keep that. Definitely going to look Into a Motorola over this iPhone 😔

I bought both Moto G power and TCL 10L and after testing both of them out I came to the conclusion that the TCL 10L is overall a better phone. Sure you'll get 1000mah more battery life on the Moto G power but you'll get a lower display quality, lose Android pay, get 4GB ram instead of 6GB and some other minor features. So if battery life is the only reason you looking to buy this phone then go for it. But the TCL is the overall winner. It's 4000mah battery is still pretty good and the 6GB RAM makes it super fast. It's also thinner than Moto G. Not to mention Android pay (NFC), sharper display and 4 cameras instead of the 3 on Moto and dual flash. P.S: TCL 10L also has face unlocking and supports T-Mobile's HD calling. Both of these phones cost $250. TCL was $211 few weeks ago on Best Buy but I guess since Amazon had them for $250 Best Buy decided to raise the price to $250 few days ago. 😔

Love how quick it is to turn on the flashlight or camera with just quick gestures of the phone. It's hard to use another phone when you've gotten used to these shortcuts. Still a fan of Pixel phones, though. They're in my top three along with Sony Xperia and Motorola. Great phone, I love the battery life, but holy crap, the navigation is stupid. In chrome, to go back, you swipe... Which constantly I don't mean to do because I'm actually not swiping, I'm moving the page around so I can read it. Wanna navigate forward? Nope, only goes back. So when you try to pan the screen a bit, it sends you back. You try to swipe forward to have it go back to where you were? It sends you back yet again.

My old boost phone sucks so I thought why not get a G power and check out this new "expanded network". Phone is ok but I don't like that it requires wifi for setup. And this EXPANDED NETWORK is a JOKE! I can sit my phone in one place and one second I have almost full signal, the next i have like 1 bar of signal. Sometimes LTE just disappears, until I restart phone. And the HOTSPOT is HOT GARBAGE!!! Called boost for help. After 1 hour and 15 minutes they successfully shut off my phone all together. 20 minutes later after being hung up on 3 times the tech got my phone working the same as when I called to complain. It would really help if I could speak to a customer service rep. who's first language is ENGLISH! SWEET F#*K!!! I am SO SICK of boost mobile!!!
