Moto Guzzi V85 TT Airbox - Bad Design!

UPDATE: Here is my final fix: • Improved V85 TT E5+ 20...
Why? Dirt can migrate past the filter. I think there are 2 reasons:
1. The 4 clamps press the case halves together really well only in the upper area.
2. The contact area of the filter is quite narrow because the support frame is too thin. The material is so thin that it even deforms.
My solution to solve this as good as possible:
1. Shape the material of the support frame
2. Alternative air filter (K&N filter)
3. Silicone grease on sealing surfaces
My conclusion:
The K&N filter is slightly larger than the stock filter or a BMC filter. The build quality of the BMC filter
seems to be the best, but the dimensions of the K&N filter and its groove on the back solve the problem with the seal! Applying silicone grease to all sealing surfaces also helps.
Best solution:
Ideally, Moto Guzzi would eliminate this design flaw during the model revisions and change the design of the airbox cover.
This slideshow video also shows the installation of an OptiMate SAE cable for permanent charge or power access.
Maybe a solution to fix the problem of the thin support frame?:

I had incredible dirt inside airbox even after only 300km. I did it exactly your way 10,000 km ago. Yesterday, I opened the airbox, and it was as clean inside as new. Your advice works like a charm. Thank you.

UPDATE: The airbox cover of the new 2024 models has indeed been improved, but unfortunately it does not fit into the previous E4 and E5 models. The shape of the back is more protruding - the bevel is not there. Totally agree with you, in the first service with the original filter I found dust in the filter box, in the second service with a K&N filter the box was completely clean.

I admire how you found flaw, but then you fit a K&N filter thats lets dirt in through its filtration systems, these are pure and simple snake oil products on road vehicles, fine in competition environment where engine rebuilds are regular and performance is paramount

I know that there is a real religious war in the www/on KZbin on the subject of paper filters/K&N/BMC, etc. I had hoped that I would be spared with my little contribution. Well then ... I think you will not get any extra performance just with exchanging an air filter element. This needs a remapping of the injection based by dyno tests + much much more (e.g. exhaust system). You might get a "sound tuning" caused by higher airflow. Whether an oiled cotton filter lets through more dirt than a paper filter, depends certainly, on many factors. Above all, it must be cleaned and oiled regularly and is therefore more expensive in the long run. I wanted to show here that the better sealing by the K&N filter (or its frame) helps against the poor airbox design.

Actually leaving the filter dirty is the best. The trapped dirt helps get the small stuff. Cleaning and oiling is a wast of time. The dirt gets in between the filter box and the throttle body side because there is no seal, just a Chanel that holds the plastic parts together with spring latches. To much dirt and your rings and cyl walls will suffer. You will use copious amounts of oil. Internal combustion engines are a large vacuum. Sand is the most destructive.

My 2004 Aprilia Tuono has had a K&N since around 1000 miles. And at this point it's showing about 180K miles. Not so sure about the things I see about the filters.

Tengo que decir que... Hice un viaje por Marocco de 15 días + 2000km por la Península Ibérica la pasada primavera y... El receptáculo estaba impoluto. Uso el KN y Vaselina para sellar las juntas ;-p) Quizá podría estudiar modificaciones en las ranuras de toma de aire de la caja porque ellas están algo bajas si te acercas al agua ( comparada con otras motos que tienen el filtro muy arriba ) pero también es verdad que nunca lo he necesitado

Hi. I forwarded a knocking claim to Piaggio, and their response (after big involvment of their technicians) highlighted dirt in the throttle body and out-of-range injection parameters. I wanted to share their explanation: "The decision to clean (throttle body)and reset (injection) was made due to the injection system parameters being out of range caused by dirt accumulation in the throttle body. The accumulation of dirt t is connected to various factors always linked to the use and maintenance conditions.”

Good 👍 info mate , sound exclamation would of been nice 👍, but was very well laid out ( as the saying goes a picture specks a thousand words 😂😂😂) Another Filter that I’m getting developed by uni - Filter Australia ( we’re I live ) is a form filter . Hopefully will be teasing it , in about 2 weeks . They make fantastic filters for Australian dusty conditions. ( they are wash out with filter form oil - dust sticks to the oil . )
