Moto X Play Review: A serious mid-tier phone without the flagship features and price

I appreciate the honesty. No phone is perfect, and it's good to know their strengths and weaknesses, to help consumers make their decisions. It seems battery life and near-stock Android are the strengths and camera and performance are occasional weaknesses. It seems that the camera, relatively-speaking, is probably better for a Motorola phone than we've seen in the past, so for a phone of this price, it's a fair tradeoff.

Thanks for the review! Quick question: I've heard in other reviews that the volume and power buttons feel cheap and tend to rattle. Was that something you observed?

+Shawn Langlois I'm also interested in that. My Nexus 5 has rattling buttons, you hear them even when you only touch the right side of the screen - drives me nuts.

+Tob Iasus The weird thing is that the first Nexus 5 I bought had that issue and it drove me nuts. That was a day 1 purchase of the black version. My current Nexus doesn't have that issue at all, the buttons are firm and make zero rattle. That device is the white model and I picked it up about 8 months ago. I'm not sure if there's a difference in the setting between the colour variants, or if it's an issue that was addressed after the initial launch.

+Cam Bunton Ah, thanks for the update Cam. That's too bad, as it's the little details that really helps me get into these lower cost offerings. In Canada, the Moto X Play is about $70-$100 more than the Idol 3, and we don't have access to either the 32gb version or to any Moto maker customizations. As much as I was looking forward to the Play, the Idol 3 looks like the better value.

Snapdragon 615 heats a lot. All phones based on 615 heat. Does this phone heat up? And secondly. Is your review model dual sim handset?

Great review! I'm upgrading from a Xiaomi Mi3 so will this phone keep me happy? I mainly need phone for social apps, calls, camera and web browsing. In your review the camera does look a good performer and I hope the focusing issues with go away will Google Camera app maybe? Lastly i want pure smoothness in a phone and my Mi3 never disappointed me with that. So is this phone a safe bet? T.I.A :)

it is true that midrange phones do not perform as good as high end, no matter what the specs say, apple always has low specs and yet they performs perfectly, so that is to be kept in mind.

This and zenfone 2 really have made midrange phones relevant, but Oneplus is giving everyone (almost) the chance of getting high end hardware at lower prices
