I have to say that a good comparison for the NT1100 would be with the Kawasaki Versys 1000 as it looks like they are both trying to be on the touring side of sport touring, forgoing any offroad prowess. Makes sense for my riding style and I think just about anyone who really wants a larger displacement bike. I think the similar styling and purpose between these two would make a good comparison, and the difference between the 1100cc parallel twin and the 1000cc (now 1100cc) inline four would shed a lot of light on what makes the perfect modern sport tourer.

As an owner of the current bike, I think they absolutely nailed the updates! Exactly what was needed! (too bad for no more power though).

More torque though and that helps create a useful separation against bikes like the Triumph tigers 900 and the Guzzi mandello or stelvio. Honda have nailed this update, only way it could be better is if the electronic suspension included a minimum preload lowering function. That would help for me as I can't quite flat foot this bike.

Current owner of a DCT and love it despite its issues. 62to 64 mpg and all day comfort and weather protection as yet unparalleled from my 53 year riding experiennce. Touring using Google maps and listening to the radio just tops it off. Great that Honda have listened. They need to as the Chinese makers are very quick to! Great review but you forgot to mention the in headlight indicators a la ADV. At least they won't poke a hole in the fairing now when it gets dropped! Doesn't look like they are permanently lit either.....but this may be different for UK bikes when they arrive.

Nice summary Rob and the new bike looks great, ticking lots of boxes that should've been ticked before (screen adjustment, IMU, pannier size, headlights) and some neat additional extras like the electonic suspension and sleeker aesthetic update. Keeping the price the same is a good move by Honda too. Shaft drive it doesn't need - chain adjust is simple and quick while I'd much rather have the weight saving and power efficiency from a chain. The only thing I'd add are more colour options, the white and red being the best schemes previously. Overall, I'm liking it!

I ride an Africa Twin but, at 72 years old, well . . . you get the drift. From my point of view, the only way Honda can fix the NT is to sell it in North America. It’s the bike I’ve been wanting to buy since its release. Pity. PS - While I appreciate the dribble down technology from the Africa Twin, I’m also convinced the NT is an aftermarket magnet. Like the Africa Twin, it calls for aftermarket exhaust, better and heated seats, windscreens and other farkles.

Having done 22,000 miles on my from new NT1100 in 20 months can say these updates are just whats needed. I havent own a chain drive in 40 years and boy, how they've changed, Scot oiler 3,500 miles round Europe didn't even look at it! O and oem chain lasted 20,000 miles and cost £150. Would hate to see what BMW shaft cost at 60,000 miles as a serviceable item!!! Think I'll stick with chain. As for power? They nailed it in my opinion, new colours looks very good, active suspension and much much more. Many criticizing lack of shaft drive? Really! A modern O-ring chain and a sprocket set will last around 35K km's with little maintenance, saving weight. I hardly ever clean the chains on my bikes, just a bit of lube after a rainy day in the saddle. GS1300 shaft drive is now considered a wear part from BMW and you pay for that, I forgot how many km's but around 75k km if I remember correctly.

Surprised Honda has stuck with DCT and not just added auto changing to the manual box as per BMW and Yamaha. Add the e-Clutch to the mix for low speed control and you have the perfect combo. One model instead of separate manual and DCT bikes, slightly lower weight, and no arguments over manual/auto as you can basically have it all.
@motobob
@motobob 8 күн бұрын
There are definitely some benefits to these new AMT systems, but DCT is really very smooth and gives them that as a competitive selling point. Got the AMT MT-09 coming in a few days so interested to see how it compares, but the E-Clutch for example isn't as slick as DCT IME and not perfect on the clutchless downshifts
@jimporter
@jimporter 8 күн бұрын
@@motobob I ride a DCT NC so understand some of the advantages of DCT however as long as an AMT system is slicker than manual then most would be happy. My point was more about with one system with an AMT system and e-clutch Honda would be well in front of the pack and there would be none of this I would never go auto or I must have a clutch what about low speed control, everyone could be happy and that could be their selling point.

As a former owner of the NT1100 and now a owner of the BMW R1250 RT, I'm pleased to see that the NT has finally received active suspension and an IMU-features I definitely missed. However, I had hoped they would also introduce active cruise control. The main reason for my switch, though, was and still is the 1250 engine, along with the superior comfort of the RT compared to the NT. Honda really needs to develop a CRF 1200 engine with more power. Is the DCT better behaved? My abiding memory of the NT was that it got to 6th WAY too soon... Honda reckoned that was to conserve fuel, but it laboured the engine too much so riders switched it to one of the sports modes so it wouldnt do that...
@mhvshn
@mhvshn 8 күн бұрын
The DCT adapts to the riding style, you just need to give it some time. Also, in standard mode it switches to higher gear as soon as possible to save fuel, but in a sport mode it behaves completely different. Also, you can customise modes and set up rpm range where it should go to higher gear.
@motobob
@motobob 8 күн бұрын
Agree that it goes for 6th as quick as poss, and found myself always running it (and other DCT bikes) in Sport mode on the DCT to help it hang onto the gears a bit. I didn't go into it too much in this video but there was a mention of tweaks to the shift timing both up and down the box, and they also specifically said it'll downshift under braking to take advantage of engine braking which will be a big improvement. It had this weird feeling of running on into corners before which was a bit unnerving and so you really had to have it in Manual if you were pushing on

I tried the new Africa Twin a couple of weeks ago, which has the new DCT updates and integration with IMU (just like this NT will have) and I have to say it's a lot better! (I own the current NT with DCT, so I can easily compare).

@@mhvshn I'd very (very) much like to investigate how that "customise modes and set up rpm range" trick is done. You could be a very wealthy man if you can show people how thats done, cause according to Honda Invercargill, and Honda NZ, it cant be adjusted...
@andygeorge6065

@@CriticalRider Next time you're on the AT, (I cant, I'm too short) try an experiment... In DRIVE, pootle up to a car at 50 kph, move out, and without touching anything else, grab a handful of throttle to pass that car, and see what it does... The NT, rather stubbornly held on to 6th, and the bike "diesel'd" its way around the car, still doing 50... If the new bike changes down a couple of gears, I'll buy it... It's really the only fault I see with an otherwise very nice bike.

Why still no Belt drive, so easy to engineer a conversion, and no weight penalty. They have the reasons to do it, and the design would not require any major wheel/swingarm/ gearbox redesign. I seen a video from someone who spoke to the people who designed it, and it was said no shaft drive because of price, but why not use a belt drive then.

For me personally, this should be a 3 inline. 130hp for a 1100cc at least. Maybe in the UK and EU it might be appropriate but not in the USA, Africa, AUS or NZ. Not for 2 up at least. Why do we not see drive shafts??? My Yami XJ900 drive shaft was an absolute pleasure for 12 years. The new Kawi Versys 1100cc hits the nail this year. 133bhp and 112nm. Spot on for me. Guess what I will buy??

Fred, Comments like yours are typically divorced from reality. Always big on quoting power and torque numbers but NEVER any mention of how and where that urge is developed. I have a 2014 150hp Ducati 1200 Multistrada and the power and handling are sublime. Trouble is I'm really sick of riding it and not just for the general unreliability and so-so build quality. The thing is like a clunky farm implement at low - medium rpm. Until the motor is spinning at a higher rpm it isn't happy at all and neither am I happy. Conversely, the bike I will swap for it soon, Africa twin DCT, is buttery smooth (like NT1100) and develops the big torque at an rpm that has the Ducati about to chug into an embarrassing stall. So the Multi has much more power but develops it, with max torque, at a stupidly high rpm. The Africa Twin/NT1000 develop this where it is USEFUL and NEEDED. There's always a trade off between high power, high torque and whether it is developed early or late. Honda made the right choice and gave AT/NT REAL guts down low and mid range. maybe 5% of the time riders want high rpm acceleration/high power but that's hardly worth ruining the other very friendly and useful characteristics of these sublime Honda motors. Everything is a trade-off and people should stop talking max numbers and talk WHER and what TYPE of power/torque is produced. Is the bike happily rideable or just rev-able like the young sportsbike jockeys seem to be enamored with?

@@brianhoward9217 I'm with Fred here. The simple fact is that whilst 100HP may be OK for general riding, it's just not enough imho for two up and luggage touring, of which we do a lot. 120-130 hp is much more enjoyable and effortless, particularly for open road overtaking.

@@malcolmhansen8276 Cost, weight and power sapping - that's why Honda stick with chain drive. Not to mention, so much easier to fix a broken chain out the back of nowhere. You can even take tools with you and parts to fiux it on the side of the road. No such luxury with a heavy and large shaft drive setup.

I have a '23 Versys 1000 and would find it hard to trade it, and the inline four engine for a parallel twin. You can talk about lowdown grunt in a twin all you want but it's just a matter of shifting and rpm's to get all the grunt you want out of the inline four.

It always amazes me that manufacturers develope these bikes over years and employ test riders but it's only the general public that spot all the problems within 5 minutes of riding them. It then takes them years to accumulate the most simple fixes that need to be done. Then when they eventually get around to fixing the basic problems that should never have left the factory everybody gives them a pat on the back and says we'll done. 🤦

I dont honestly think honda target people who already have big touring bikes with this. It is mainly to get into touring cheaply. A very good option if you are not acustomed to touring bikes but it would definetely be a downgrade from an RT. But as you said, it is realistically half the price of a brand new RT.

I have sold 2023 NT1100 and bought Africa Twin 2024. Updated motor and DCT in 2024 work perfect! On NT 2023 there was plenty mistakes on that model. Heating issues in Sommer times is ... Off ... Leg grill!!! Fan from coolers goes directly to your inner legs, in the plastic part, not out of the bike!!! Luggages for everyday riders are... Not user friendly and small... Top case is also not user friendly for everyday bikers, u don't want to opening them more than twice a month 😂. Without electronic suspension is NT not comfy and not stabile... If u have try ES, u want it also on NT, it is good choice to have the opinion to have it on NT, bike will be more stabile!!! And more softly in the cities.. your back will be thankfull every day for ES! Seat improvement on NT ... Yeah, finally u be able to hold your bike between you legs in the corners! Airodinamics - for small guys is ok, for mee 6,2" it's not good, improvement in plexi are welcome - finally!!! Honda did research?!! Dziizs, just try the bike before u start selling it!!! For two weeks and 2000 km u know all the issues while u using it... Dammmmm 😂 It looks like the heating issues to legs will be continue in 2025 , there is visible just an small progres in that plastic parts around coolers fan! Maybe more 10 years of Honda research, and it will work 😂... NT is Quality build bike, no question's! But need more bikers research... 19" front wheel, ES, heating deflectors for legs and balls, and head, shoulders, hands etc, handguards have no cable reserve to setup higher with stocks, nessesery new luggages for everyday using, top case bigger and not half opening and choose new material!!! Design is subjective! Like i said, just try it before u sell it out 😂
