I don't love the winglets, but apart from the styling, this is exactly what an R9 should be: the CP3 engine, but finally in a completely unconpromised supersport chassis with supersport-class brakes and suspension. People complaining about the power have either never ridden the CP3 or are simply too focused on numbers. It has the same power as the R6, which it is intended to replace. Plus a boatload more torque. I have no idea what people are complaining about. Trust me, unless you're literally a professional racer, this engine is capable of more than you are. And for those complaining about the price, it's $2000 more than a base MT09. For that you get an entirely new chassis, much better suspension, stylema calipers, 320mm discs, steel lines, switchable ABS, a bunch more electronics and oh yeah, full fairings. Again, I have no idea what y'all are complaining about.
@adamschoedel88292 ай бұрын
Absolutely. I ride an MT-09 SP every day. I love it. I'm a pretty good rider (35 years on bikes), but the bike is better than I'll ever be. In a real race chassis, the CP3 will be a beast of a bike.

Another thing to point out is the R9 final drive has been geared down to 41 from 43 in the MT09 to give it a bit more top speed. It’ll probably be quite comparable to most 600’s top speed wise. It’s also going to accelerate a hair quicker due to more torque everywhere vs a 600… I’d be curious to see a last gen road legal R6 go head to head with this in some acceleration tests…
@ApexRadius2 ай бұрын
It will probably be quicker assuming it can get the power to the ground. The R6 is absolutely gutless until way higher in the rev range. Fine on the track but crap on the road. The R9 will be a much better all-rounder for sure.

Interesting why Yamaha can only get 119 hp from their 900cc triple when MV Agusta can get 147 hp from their 800cc triple. With the same weight as my Superveloce
@HifeMan2 ай бұрын
They just pushing the motor much harder, much stronger engines components. Their a reason the MV costs way more.
@devonnobles10832 ай бұрын
They don't want to lose the T in MT. You have to rev the MV to about 10k rpm before it starts making more power than the cp3. Below that and in the real world the mt is more powerful.
@exothermal.sprocket2 ай бұрын
"They can only get" Because they have decided to. Not because it's limited. The aftermarket racing development has pushed the CP2 to north of 100 horsepower. Because they decided to.
@DoozyShipsha2 ай бұрын
Because it's Yamaha, a mass producer. They never set a different production line for an engine with different camshafts/crank/pistons/valves etc.. Instead they build the same engine and swap it in different bikes.

119 bhp from the cbr600rr and zx6r, expected a bit more from the 900. Ducati twins in the 800-900 range make heaps more power.

swap the horrible exhaust for something more traditional styled exhaust and it's pretty perfect for what it is.
@exothermal.sprocket2 ай бұрын
I think it meets all the specifications it's supposed to. I too was hoping they'd create a second specification for this CP3...one that is proprietary to the R9 with like another 10 hp. BUT... if this bike falls into a MotoAmerica racing category or some common racing club, what that will mean is there will be racing development for this powertrain just like there's been racing development for the R7, GSX-8R, RS660 and the like. I know this CP3 can take the power, people were turbocharging the 847cc version without problems. Anyway, doubt I'll be buying the R9, more interested in a XSR900 if they migrate the updates from the '24 MT.
@johns3102 ай бұрын
With it sharing similar characteristics as the other 900s in the range, personally I’d lean towards the xsr900gp if they released it this side of the Atlantic over the r9. It just doesn’t seem like it did enough to stand out

I’m all for innovation and improvements over time. That’s the only way we can get better. However with that said, it’s still a sad day seeing another knife in the 4 cylinder 600/1000cc era. Especially the bikes pre ABS, traction control, electronic throttles, lcd/tft displays, etc. Wish we could still get fresh bikes without all the fancy stuff. Guess it’s just a bitter sweet time for bikes for me.

1-The engine definitely should have been at least 20hp more power. 2-The gap at the cylinder head in the middle of the bike looks really cheap. You can see through it when you look. Even the R3 doesn’t have anything like that. 3-The rear swingarm should have had a design that suits a race bike. 4-Yamaha really needs to give up on this single lens headlight fantasy they've been using in the middle. If they placed dual headlights below like on the R1, it would have been much better.

Everyone complaining about this bike, what were you expecting them to do? Everyone has been asking them to put the cp3 in a sportbike. Now they do that, and it's not good enough? No one says the mt09 is underpowered, so why would they have given this more peak power while sacrificing low and midrange?

Design: I understand the idea of integrating the winglets, referencing MotoGP. Yet, it seems they detract from the sleek, streamlined design of yore. Yamaha's previous designs, to me, always embodied razor-sharp aerodynamics slicing through the air, paired with a nearly skeletal frame for ultimate lightness and nimbleness. Performance: The aerodynamic function of the winglets likely doesn't apply until after achieving higher than highway speeds (like most aero on vehicles), but I understand the functional inspiration from MotoGP. The CP3 is seemingly identical to the XSR and MT09, which is a bit underwhelming considering the primary purpose of this platform. Features: They're the same as the MT-09 and XSR which is not that surprising. Maybe a few features that apply specifically to the track, but again, I imagine *most* riders would not extract full potential anywhere else. Overall: I was excited for this announcement even though I don't see myself getting back in this genre. But my feelings are quite dampened after this report. I liken this bike to being that bridge between road compliance and track aggression, attempting to achieve a balance. However, that balance comes off as a compromise of both. But in the end, I think it comes down to each rider's goals.
