So I've had one of these for 10,000 miles / 18 months now. I bought it to replace a TMax (btw - quick comparison with TMax: the XAdv has a bit less weather protection, is much heavier, the is DCT not quite so nice as CVT, the X uses a fair bit less petrol) but even then it was only meant as a second bike, my main steed being a 690 Duke R. The Duke is too mental for mundane tasks and murders my arse on anything other than shortish frenzied road attacks. So I got a scooter to commute on and go to the shops and ... tour. Scooters (TMax included) are just brilliant at touring, like, way better than people riding around on FJs and RTs would have you believe. So here is a review. So why did I buy it over the Tmax? Well, three reasons. Number one - it looks fantastic. I love quirky looking bikes. I owned GSes before they were famous, now everyone loves them. Secondly - it sounds fantastic. The Tmax sounds a bit bland, the XAdv has a brilliant 270 degree crank sound. Thirdly - the TMax only gets 55mpg, the XAdv lately gives me 70mpg, so that's saved 40 gallons (184 litres) over the last 18 months, or about £200, which is not to be sniffed at. I thrash it mostly everywhere (in Sport 2 mode - use Drive mode for villages and town). It ain't fast but it takes of sharp from a standstill to about 40mph which is fun trolling boy racers from the lights. I get 5000 miles from a rear and it seems 10000 out of the front. It's bloody heavy (240kg or so with crashbars), and high up, though the centre of gravity is very low and you can easily pick it up off of its side should it blow over in a gale(ahem). It is, to all intents and purposes, a motorcycle, not a scooter. The only scootery thing about it is the underseat storage (it easily takes my full-face Shoei or a big bag of shopping). And I suppose the petrol filler. The petrol cap is rarely mentioned in reviews but know this: it is covered by a fairly flimsy plastic cover and otherwise insecure - some shitbag could easily siphon off your petrol if they were so inclined, but as there's barely 13 litres of the stuff when it's full, I don't suppose anyone will want to. It does somewhere between 65-75mpg, dropping to the lower end when thrashing it on the motorway for hours. This gives it a realistic tank range of 180 miles, which is great for touring. In the end it's ended up being my "first" bike because it's just so damned useful. Being able to chuck the lid or lock under the seat is an eye-opening feature of scooters that more bikers should really get to try out. The keyless ignition and petrol and seat locking is awesome (still gotta get the keys out to do the disc lock though). It's supremely comfy. It keeps most of the weather off (not so good as the TMax but still good). I don't ride it too fast and don't feel obliged to either (unlike the KTM). I'm just so surprised at how good the bike is at doing everything except actual racing it looks like I am going to keep it for another few years. Here are the best bits (no particular order): 1. Ease-of-use - the combination of storage, keyless operation, and DCT. 2. Efficiency and range. 3. Underseat storage. 4. Handling & braking - both just like a normal bike, and a good one at that. 5. Build quality: proper Honda. Here are the gripes: 1. Chain drive. Ah well. 2. The heated grips are shit. No good at all under 10 degrees. I will replace the official Honda ones with some Oxfords at some point. 3. The LED lights - even with the aux foglights - are feeble. No night riding in the sticks unless you're brave and foolhardy. 4. DCT is great until it's not, and that is when you are doing about 5mph and trying to turn round a little corner. It'll change down from 2nd to 1st at exactly the wrong moment, and if you're not expecting it or the surface is slippery, there's even a chance it'll have you off. 5. So heavy! I wish it were 20kg lighter. 6. Price. It *is* too expensive. Buy a 1 year old one, unlike me. Hope that helps.

Great write up. If you had to replace it, would you still get an X-ADV or go back to the Tmax? I've got a 690, but keep thinking a Tmax or X-ADV would do me great for commuting into London, especially in the winter months.
@caspianprince4 жыл бұрын
@@SHates that's actually really hard to answer, they're both amazingly good. I think the Tmax would just pip it as a winter commute, because of better lights, heating, and weather protection

Spot on summary of the bike, I have just bought one and love it. This will be my only bike and I intend to use it for everything. The good bits are the ease of use from the DCT and keyless ride which make using it such a doddle. The underseat storage is very handy, no need for a top box or tail pack for your everyday bits and pieces, over trousers, spare gloves, puncture repair kit, disc lock, chain etc. just goes under the seat. Looking forward to touring on it, my Givi top box and underseat storage will give me 70 litres of luggage capacity with no need for panniers. This could be the ideal bike for touring the UK at sensible speeds, it's smooth as hell on dual carriageway and will get 70 to 75mpg without really trying which could be reassuring if you find yourself somewhere running low and feeling a bit of fuel anxiety. The bike is heavy but doesn't feel it, the build quality is lovely it feels like a premium product and I love the way it looks. The bike was designed by Honda Italy who gave us the recent Africa twin so in the metal it looks great, even better than it looks in pictures. Looking forward to getting some touring done on mine, try and get a test ride on one if you can and prepare to be surprised.

I never thought I'd ever be interested in a scooter. I've been a biker for 30 years but now I've reached the grand old age of 70 and my poor old body is starting to complain. A bike like this might be exactly what I need; comfortable on my bum and wrists, no gear changing but still exciting. Thanks for opening my eyes to new ideas. @TrNdke4 жыл бұрын
I get a a lot of your initial confusion about this bike, but these large scooters and scooter-hybrids are my favorite category of motorcycle. You said it yourself. Practicality. Don't get me wrong, I love and ride manual motorcycles. I grew up on and around them and they're a blast. That said, large scooters are really something special. I've put many a mile on my 250 Honda Reflex, doing things I would never do on a 250cc motorcycle. 14 hour days of touring back highways, commuting to work in 25 degree (F) weather, riding two-up on mountain twisties, and perhaps most impressive of all - grocery shopping with a cart instead of a basket. Most of us at some point have enjoyed the "slow bike fast" fun of bombing around on a 50 cc scooter, WOT, grinning like a fool at our own low-speed shenanigans. They're great for bopping around town, especially in dense traffic. Small, nimble, peppy and clutchless, with room for groceries and beer, they even leave your clothes clean and dry compared to having your knees in the breeze on a traditional motorcycle. But what a lot of people are missing is the magic that happens when you put the fun, ease, and comfort of a scooter into a bigger package. You get something that manages to be both a practical around town bike for grocery-getting and commuting, and a practical back-road touring bike, with the kind of storage capacity and plush comfort you usually have to buy a Gold Wing to get. Look at the Suzuki Burgman, Honda Reflex, and Honda Silverwing. You can't find that kind of love-seat-on-wheels-with-luggage comfort under 10k in any other class. And you can still pop down the street and pick up a friend, a pizza, and a six pack with enough agility to avoid the texting Prius drivers. Riding a big touring bike like a Gold Wing in stop and go city traffic is a nightmare. Especially for short, light riders like me; I'll take a big scoot over a small ADV for commuting and over a big touring bike for highway use all day, everyday. So, it's interesting to see bikes like this and the Honda NC700 further blurring the lines around what a motorcycle can be. We all love the style and romance of traditional motorcycles, for sure, but wouldn't it be cool to re-think motorcycling in a way that let us get on two wheels more often, and maybe even made it more accessible to new riders, new blood in the hobby? Do we have to be married to sitting on top of a hot engine, fighting the gearbox in traffic when we could be relaxed and alert for road hazards instead of working the clutch? Are giant heavy, expensive, two-wheeled RVs with refrigerators strapped to the side the only way to tour? Or could we shrink the machine and keep the comfort and agility by slinging that motor low and losing the manual transmission? Especially when I think about electric motors, I see potential for new life being breathed into motorcycles as a transportation concept. I really hope that motorcycle manufacturers keep exploring these boundaries. And in the US, where urban traffic is a nightmare, yet we have so many lovely miles of open highway, these clutchless bikes that break the mold could have a whole new territory to conquer. Now if we could just figure out how to get Americans to check their egos long enough to give this stuff a chance! I wish Honda and the like would bring more of these automatic big bikes and weird scooters here and figure out how to market them! It kills me that Asia and Europe get all the cool toys!

I enjoy your videos Bob and was interested in this one because I fancied a bike with a bit more weather protection for the winter. Eventually the weight and price ruled it out. I got a 300cc maxi scooter. Holds 70 on the motorway with ease, 120 litres of luggage space with a top box, 80 mpg and all the features of the X-ADV but half the price .

I have what may be the only one in the US. It's been my daily commuter all summer. I love it. I don't think I would call it an adventure bike though. Way to wide especially down low for that. It could handle a hard packed dirt road but that's about it. But for commuting or weekend sightseeing it's great. I've had it at 100 MPH and still get 60 MPG and I'm a heavy guy. Underseat storage is a little small. I'd say if you it helmet is bigger than a size large it won't fit.

I sat on this bike and I'd love to have it as it's perfect for my needs, BUT: 1. Chain drive instead of belt. I like less maintenance, would prefer belt. 2. DCT is cool, but normal CVT would have done the job for me too. 3. Pricey... had two of them (one in Italy and one in UK). It is the best commuter ever. If you are looking for a "maxi" scooter - you can look at this, bmw or yamaha tmax. This has the BIG advantage of hacing the DCT and a good engine. Also is cheap to run and maintain. It is basically the fix to the integra failure. Has an amazing style (if you like the SUV look), 2 front discs, keyless, helmet compartment, full led... The reason why is popular in Italy it is due to the fact it has been designed and engineered by Honda Italy (they were desperate to have a decent competitor in the space where Integra failed). Unfortunately the UK last 10 days. Stolen as all popular bikes are. It is expensive - yes - but it is a comfortable commuter that is ready for off road of trips outdoor. I would recommend it without any though. Now driving a NC750X - once you try DCT the rest doesnt exist.

Made a search on the 750 because on my wish-list is a large scooter rider and seeing as I now living in Asia I'd like to be able to tour without the issues of clutch biking and have the power for low rev freeway riding away from the shoulder riding with a smaller scooter. As you point out the ease of one-handed free riding and ease of stop n go with auto bikes has its definite pluses. I've got an ADV150 now which I love, bought it over my previous and very popular 150i Click. Such a difference in ride and so superior for comfort. Not "plasticy" as you said. Haha that's crazy! I didn't realise that - is there not a fallback on a regular key? When I borrowed the Goldwing from Honda I accidentally ran the battery flat whilst out filming (left the heated seats on whilst the engine was off!) and the procedure to get to the battery to jump start it was quite something. The panniers are part of the keyless system, so you need to pop a panel off from just above the number plate. Then you can use the key to manually open the pannier, where you have to pull a piece of bodywork off to finally access the battery. Not sure what the procedure is like for the X-ADV but assume something similar.

I thought it was really cool, I was 17 at the time, had no license yet, (which didn't stop me from driving - country), and have always liked the idea of how fuel efficient they are. Though, living in Michigan at the time it made no sense to be the first vehicle, so when he offered to let me take it for a small spin, I thought it was the coolest thing to zip down the road and back. It was smooth, fun, and easy to ride. I would think this scooter would do well in America, maybe. I say maybe because not as many compared with 20 years ago.

This scooter makes a lot of sense in Asia or South America because there are many trails and not that many roads. Where I live, it is usually 80% road and 20% trail. Obviously, if you drive only in the city, a normal scooter will suffice but as soon as you go in the countryside it is better to have something able to manage easy trails. This is why it makes a lot of sense in many countries lacking a full road network. This scooter is good for that but is not offroad capable only gravel roads and alike.

Now if Honda would build an eX-ADV, with built in side cases, and belt drive, then this would be an ideal commuter. I can even deal with the high price given I want to avoid public transportation and gas stations in our post-pandemic future. Good point, for a quick hop down to the store this is the bike. For a long weekend ride, leave this one in the garage.

@krittinteerasawasdi43334 жыл бұрын
Also why they are so popular in Thailand. There aren't so many choices of big scooters or mid-ADV bikes (and they consider this bike as some kind of a big scooter) with this price tag. The DCT fails to shift sometimes when you ride through the traffic here. That is because the DCT is constantly working, plus the weather here is super hot.

I live in Australia and we don’t get this bike here but I’d love one for running around, climbing on and off the GSA around town can get a little tedious but having said that, I’d be worried that I’d never use the GSA again. EXCEPT the cruise control missing would make it a short trip bike only.

I grew riding conventional 5 speed motorcycles and recently got back into riding motorcycles again after a long gap of 20 years and love the new CVT Maxi scooters. I wasn't sure how I would like a CVT SYM Maxi scooter RV250 and have found it to be extremely practical and laid back way to ride. No Clutch and gears to deal with makes riding to work and navigating stop n go traffic a dream. The HONDA X ADV 750 is a brilliant practical motorcycle engine and the concept is one I wish I could enjoy here in AMERICA. This bike offroad ability may not be the best but it offers the chassis to handle todays messed up roads of pot holes and poorly maintained roads. I find the weather protection of a maxi scooter to be a must have in my Pacific NW climate and rain. Once you ride a SCOOTER with floorboards and wind fairing protection you get spoiled and just have to have it.

These bikes also sell really well in Portugal. We have a lot of old school cobble stoned roads that in most places is in bad condition and these bikes have turned out to be great city bikes for cities with bad road surfaces. Plus Honda need to compete with the Yamaha T-max.

I had a Scrambler 1200 as my daily for just over a year. Keyless ignition was brilliant to have, doesn't matter that it's not 'retro'. Cruise control is pointless on normal roads. That X-Adv is weird looking. Shaft drive would make it a winner I reckon.

A higher displacement "scooter like" bike is what we need in the USA. The PCX and ADV 150 is fine but the 750 would be great for longer trips that require higher speeds. I'm still waiting on a Trail 250.

The X-ADV is a great bike I had a chance to ride one for a short time, I live in The Gambia, West Africa. My suggestion based on my experience with the X-ADV is: Honda should look into a mid-range X-ADV. i.e. between the 150cc X-ADV and 750cc. Say a 350cc X-ADV. I believe this will be lighter in weight, have better gas mileage, and more fun in commuting, especially in busy traffics like in Africa and Asia. It would be like the Off-Road version oh the Honda Forza 350cc.

They have one in the US market, a 150. Pretty sure it's the same motor as the PCX 150. I also would like to see it in that higher midrange, though. 250 - 500 would be perfect. I guess at 150 they are hoping that it will be a bigger alternative to the Grom.
@TheAlien19704 жыл бұрын
@@TrNdke Seriously doubt Honda will go for another low-mid-ranger. They will most certainly up the capacity of the 750 to probably 800cc or even 850cc to meet the upcoming stricter emission regulations in Europe for 2021. This updated/revised motor will also be used on the heavily rumored baby Africa Twin. This is the reason I am holding back from buying one till next year. Hopefully with the increase in capacity there will also be an increase in power, which I thing this bike needs/deserves.

It's interesting that they're not selling this adv X in Australia but they are selling the adv 150 which is basically this but based on a traditional 150cc CVT scooter rather than the nc750x. I've ridden a Honda pcx150 in Thailand and it didn't feel anything like a smal scooter, handled more like a proper bike and had the seating position like a cruiser.

I tested this with the other NC variants, sport and x. I didn’t like the large step over and if I was going for a big scoot I would have bought the BMW 650. Nearly did buy a second hand one but it had reliability problems and the dealer had spent £1700 on it after 11K miles and I didn’t fancy expensive belt replacement every 12k. In the end I bought the NC750X because it handles better, I found it more comfortable than the x-adv and I didn’t see the reason to spend 2.5K extra for the X-ADV over the NC. The NC has a frunk as well.

The other thing I like about the NC750X is that the tank is under the seat, so that even though it's 220kg in weight, the centre of gravity is so low that it's really easy to move around, even for an older person (68) like me. Until last year I also had a Benelli Tre-k 1130, which was the same weight but because it was so top-heavy I had a great deal of problem moving it and I ended up selling it, even though it was a dream to ride. I'm disappointed to hear that the X-ADV is difficult to move around as it looks to be a very interesting bike.
@coleythailand9994 жыл бұрын
Hi, Not surprised that Thailand came up during your search. There are, apparently about 35 million bikes in Thailand and most of them are scooters because they are very cheap and easily financed. Thai people love automatic machines because they do not have to learn anything to ride them and most people ride because they cannot afford a car. Of course the 2% of bikes over 250 cc are ridden by people that actually like motorcycles but many do not ride safely just like the car drivers in Thailand, and for a country with the same population as UK has about 80 riders die every day. Honda are the top selling bikes in the country and I do not think that I have seen that ADV bike yet although I know it is available.

Lets be honest, the x-adv is an over priced styling exercise. Something like a 650 burgman may not look as cool, but will be vastly more comfortable for most riders on longer trips, while providing a similar level of capability to the x-adv in semi-challenging off road conditions - eg, zero capability : )

Having owned a KLR650 and other dual sports, I like utility in bikes and kind of odd bikes overall and this one is certainly odd. I like it. The 50HP point is a very nice utility power level as well, allowing for proper highway maneuvering and plenty of speed for traffic wars. I have a KTM 690R now and the power level it has is not far off and made that bike far better than my KLR simply to be able to command my position in traffic with ease. I miss the fuel range of the KLR _a_lot_ with the KTM but the performance is such an edge for safety frankly, so this bike having the utility/practical side of a scooter but with the grunt for proper traffic navigation, it's a good concept I think. Also it looks better to me than the really staid looking maxi scooters out there.

I’m so freaking salty that Honda won’t market the X-ADV750 here in the US!!! The ADV150 has been selling like hotcakes to the point where it took me 6wks to finally track one down back in April. I love it, but I need something with better acceleration capabilities ya know? And sure, I can install a variator & roller kit for just under $1000, but it’ll only add about 5-6mph to my top speed. I desperately want this bike! If anyone has a contact inside of Honda PLZ TELL THEM WE NEED IT HERE!!! Lol

Those of us who are Maxi-scooter riders are all about the practicality of our bike. We still cannot get the X-ADV in the USA, which I hear a lot of people whine about, but I wonder if they would actually *buy one.* Our market just isn't the same as Italy or Thailand. We are suffering from envy. I'll just keep boasting about the mileage I get from my very practical 250.
@karlosh92864 жыл бұрын
Interesting and certainly different. I can see why some people would choose it. I had a go on a DCT NC750x last year, and the auto box is pretty good, although I didn't like it changing gear mid bend. 238Kg is Honda's quoted weight for the XADV. I find my Speed Twin a bit heavy to push around and it's lighter at around 220Kg wet. My Street Triple S is lighter still. The XADV is not much cheaper than the CB1000R you had out at the same time. Maybe I'm predictable, out of the two I'd have the CB1000R . Sod the practicality, I've got a car for that ! Saying that if I wanted a really good cheapish practical commuter bike with auto box, I'd have the much cheaper NC750S DCT. £3k less cash and it weighs 21Kg less too.

Scooters and Cubs are super popular in Asia, that's why Honda sold 100 million of cubs in Asia. Only in the western countries would people wonder why the ADV is popular. But it makes complete sense in Asia, where younger riders want something more sporty than their father's scooter/cub
