For me they are two totally different bikes, The himmy is a small ADV, but the scrambler is a scrambler! You wouldn't buy one to do adventure riding! True you could do a bit of scamming on the himmy but it would be more fun on the Triumph. I think for most of us the triumph is going to be for back lane scratching trail rides and buzzing around locally, a fun bike that you don't have to fully kit up for, a light jacket gloves and helmet and away.

Having owned (still do the Thruxton R) a Speed Twin and an Interceptor 650 I went for the Himmy 450 over the Triumph 400. It was close but I wanted the slightly more rugged and simple looks of the RE450 No regrets thus far. Over here in Australia the roadside assist package helps as well.

I agree about styling. The triumph is a very cool looking bike. But as an Interceptor owner, it doesn’t do enough different than what I already have, so I’d be most likely to go with the Himalayan as an addition to my stable, and neither if I was just looking to own one bike.

I bought a Scrambler 400X a couple of weeks ago at a dealer that also sells Royal Enfield. They did not have the new Himalayan 450 but did have a couple of the old Himalayans, one fully dressed and one basic. In comparison the 400 Scrambler was better in fit and finish, performance, and price. With transportation and assembly fees the basic RE was actually $200 more than the Scrambler. Once I rode the Scrambler 400 the choice was not even close. With the upgrade to a 450 RE might fill the performance gap and based on the video I've seen the 450 is a step up in finish from the old Himalayan. Even so, for the type of riding I do the Scrambler 400 is the clear choice for me. I live in a twistie rich environment and have a wealth of forest service roads and primitive roads where the Scrambler 400 shines. I had a Honda NC 750 and CRF 250, both of which are fine motorcycles, but neither compare to the Scrambler 400 for my needs. That said, competition is a good thing and I would like to see Triumph come out with a 650 Bonneville to compete with the RE Interceptor 650. That would surely spawn debates for years to come.

Thanks a lot for this most interesting comparison. As a 77-year-young biker, I think both bikes have the classic look of the bikes of my youth. One of the things I like on the Triumph is the hand guards; I'm riding everyday in the Tropics a 2010 660cc Yamaha MT03 that came with hand guards; they did a great job the couple of time I dropped my baby... From now on, I can't see myself riding a bike without hand guards 😀😀😀Also, The Royal Enfield radiator is less exposed to gravel projection 🙃🙃🙃

I have tested both, but the Enfield is running low on stocks already, some of the bolt on bit have a 1 month waiting period. The Triumph x400 Scramble just does it for me, coming from a Harley 883 Iron Its totally kicked all the other bikes I have been testing, and working through. The x400 Scramble is 60 Road/40 Trail and that what I am after, tripping on country roads mostly. The Enfield is 40 Road/60 Trail. But I still feel the KTM 390 is what I would go for if I was going full monty Adventure touring.

I like both motorcycles, but would prefer the RE. Advantages: better wind protection, standard center stand and crash bars, and for me the more interesting design. The RE looks so wonderfully old-fashioned while the Triumph looks like all the others. What bothers me about the RE is the sloppy workmanship in some details. The black/gold model has tube tires and the CEAT standard tires are crap in the wet.

I am reading a lot of conflicting info on the supposedly "low seat" option of the Himalayan 450, the tech spec sheet on the official website says there's the option but it was nowhere to be found in the accessory side nor I found confirmation talking to the official dealer in my town. India's review channels also often refer to the lower seat to be at 810 rather than 805 in its lower setting. Still the low seat isn't really available anyway. I just hope it will be indeed available because, at least for me, it might represent the difference between pulling the trigger or not on the bike.

So one of the points in favour of the Triumph is that the company that makes their stock tires pays you? How am I supposed to take anything in this review seriously after hearing that? And you mention the handling and engine's low-end power curve being more "city friendly" despite the fact that the wheelbase of the bikes are only 2 inches apart, and the 450 motor in the Himalayan is designed to have the low-end tractor factor for ease of use at low speeds. Also "I like that the Scrambler has bits on it that are 100% superfluous and do nothing for the function of the bike except to make someone think it's more capable than it is" is a pretty silly thing to add to the comparison. The Scrambler 400X is a radical looking bike and I don't doubt it's a fantastic and affordable small displacement city bike, but why even compare these bikes in the first place? They're very clearly nothing alike, they serve completely different parts of the market, and the criteria you used in this is nonsensical at best, and a low effort biased ad for your sponsor at best

I think your opinion of a 19" front wheel & what you can do with it is complete rubbish. I own a Royal ENfield Meteor 350 & this has a 19" front wheel & I often take this bike off road. To me in a lot of situations it actually tracks better & feels more planted than the old Himalayan off road & would be my preferred choice. I would add a bash plate & slightly more off road bias tyres & I would attempt anything that I'd previously done on the Himalayan using a bike with a 19" front wheel. 21" front wheel distances you from what's directly in front of you which isn't always ideal especially when dealing with a rocky river crossing & also not the same feel as a 19" front wheel on road especially the twisty bits. The dash on the triumph is retro in keeping with the rest of the bike. The dash & everything else about the Himalayan isn't really retro & I can't see how it relates to the previous model apart from the tank racks.

There is no way a 19” front is better than a 21” front off-road. The skinnier 21” gives you more control in loose gravel and sand, and the larger circumference means it can roll over obstacles easier. Lastly the spokes mean it can take impacts from rocks and ledges and is far less likely to crack the rims as the spokes give the rims some flex..

@@slakk5093 The Scrambler 400X has now a Rally Raid kit available for tubeless spoke wheels with gold rims. Their are some other upgrades as well including suspension. The Himalayan is about 20 kg too heavy & that's the feedback. Try lifting the Himalayan off the side stand-it weighs a ton. I sat on a Triumph Tiger 660 triple the other day & it had a similar lean angle to the Himalayan & it felt lighter than the HImalayan. Even the R nine T 1200cc BMW felt lighter than the Himalayan. I think they must have filled the frame with lead. The bike has gotten too big-it's huge & long which puts it in the category of the Tuarag 660 & Tenere 700 & I'd say the weight feel would be similar as well. It's no longer a lite middleweight I feel & the long standing issue with the 200 kg for a 411 cc bike still haunts this new 450 cc bike which I feel considering they had a blank canvas is somewhat a failure. I dislike the look of the bike apart from the black & gold which to some degree disguises the huge tank. But the othe killer for me is having to remove the tank to change the air cleaner. In summary I don't think they've entirely listened to customer's/dealers about the short comings of the old bike. Yes the performance has being improved at higher speeds & yes perhaps the suspension is better with also an improved display but if the bike isn't manageable because of it's size & weight in difficult terrain & challenging situations like cambered steep climbs where you want to turn around then all the rest of the upgrades are null n void. I think the it would be down my list of bikes in this category with the arrival of the Scrambler 400X with it's agile 179 kg wet & the CF Moto 450 MT.

@@frankpinion4937 doesn’t change the fact that the it’s still a 19in. Great that it has spokes but it’s still a “soft-roader” not an off-roader like the 450MT and Himi450. They are all good bikes, just different uses. The Triumph is good for the odd gravel road and laneways, but is seriously lacking in true offroad tracks. Also I think you are overplaying the weight of the himi450. I have taken one for a test ride and it isn’t that bad, and not difficult to lift off the side stand. Have you ridden a tenere 700? That is a top heavy bike

You sure do like your techie gadgets, Bob. I think if you ever had to use an actual paper atlas to find your way or a phone book to find a phone number, you'd keel over and have to be carried away on a stretcher.

Not a fair comparison...Hymalayan is a 100% adventure bike. The 400x is geared towards the urban riding.
