The 16 Best Beginner Motorcycles of 2023

You decided to become a motorcycle rider, you just went through a beginner rider safety course and got your license. Now there is a big question: which bike should you buy? Ideally it should have easy, manageable power output, yet it should have plenty of power, so you won't become bored with it quickly. It should be something light and maneuverable, yet stable and being able to make that long cross-country trips you always dreamed of. It should be modern motorcycle, with plenty of electronic safety features, yet it should be a reliable bike too. Also it should have low seat height, so you can flat-foot it any time, but also it should not be a puny Honda Grom or something, you don't want to look silly after all. It should look very cool. And the bike should not break the bank account - it's a beginner bike after all.
If you think all this sounds a bit unrealistic - you're right, there is no such a bike, because a lot of those features contradict each other. But still, there are plenty of bikes on the market which maybe not tick all the boxes, but sure a lot of them. And if there's something I learned by teaching my students to ride their bikes - that the first bike which you buy and learn to ride on can make a massive difference for your riding experience through the whole your motorcycling career. Too bad that quite a lot of people despite their better judgement go and buy a completely wrong bike, which just hinders their progress as a rider.

A little info about me. My name is Andrei Bodrov, originally I'm from Moscow, Russia, and now I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Back in Moscow I was a motorcycle instructor and creator of Moto Control Beginner & Advanced motorcycle rider courses, which quickly became the most popular courses in Moscow (well, at least the advanced one😁). This is the BEST beginner bike explainer on KZbin right now. I would add the Honda CRF300L/Rally along with the KLX300/SM listed here, and the Honda CB500X, and the 2023 Kawasaki KLR650/S. I would also add the Triumph Tiger Sport 660 which might be the most bang for buck in 2022/2023. All the 2022/2023 Royal Enfield models probably belong on this list. In the beginning most of us need to be able to rest at stops with one foot flat on the ground. Demand ABS on your first bike even if its off-road focused. It CAN be turned off but adding later isn't so easy on some bikes. Be well everyone... enjoy the ride.

Another type of bike to avoid as a beginner is vintage bikes. Yes, they look cool, but you probably won't get to ride it much because you will need to spend so much time fixing it.

One tip from me: as a beginner don't buy a brand new bike, you are wasting money. Get a used one because you will most likely drop it anway and with a new one, you are losing a lot of money when you try to re sell it. Buy a decently used bike with at least ABS and under 100hp. When you rode it the first few years, dropped it a few times, have figured out how to ride and you want to try something new, it's time to get the new dream bike. I did this and my first brand new bike I bought is still drop free after four years. I could now re sell it for probably the same amount I paid for it because the used market here has sky rocketing prices...

Not sure what the used market is like in your area but where I'm at, you can get a, for example, 2020 honda rebel 500 for $8500 with 8k km on it or a new one for $9100. I would rather buy new knowing that I'm not buying someone else's problems.

Did my license training in a Kawa Z400 and a CB500F. When I passed I got a blue Gen 2 (2014) Suzuki VStrom 650 (limited to 35kW for the European A2 - about 47hp). I am so in love with this bike. It's very comfortable due to the upright riding position. Power is great, even when limited. It's great for carrying a pillion if I ever chose to, and for loads of luggage, yet it's still not HUGE and quite agile. I'm a short rider, so it's a little tall for me, and it is quite heavy, but practicing slow speed maneuvers makes it easy to handle. Most importantly, it's so much fun! I can't wait to upgrade to the A license next year and remove the power limit on my little WeeStrom, though I am already more than satisfied with the power it has and have never found it lacking. The limit is in the upper end so acceleration is great. I can already do 150+km/h and doing more than that just seems so unnecessary for my type of riding.

Yes, the Enfields! I have a RE Himalayan which is a very controversial bike due to being relatively "slow" (up to 120km/h) on highways, but it's a delightful and powerful bike off roads and very comfortable for taller riders. It is also a beautiful bike to see. But as you'll probably read on the internet, REs are semi-classical bikes which lack a lot of modern characteristics that you can enjoy on cheaper and smaller bikes. So for beginners, the Brand's line of design would maybe make a hard style of bike to learn as you'll have to warm up in cold mornings, maintain good oil and filter discipline and take care of your bike as people did 30 years ago. They're fun bikes to ride though and you'll be in love with them except when starting the engine in the morning and doing the relatively long break-in process they require.

My first bike was a small Chinese electric bike - SuperSoco. It was more bicycle than a motorcycle, but it helped me to understand traffic in the city and how to survive)) So next season I bought Sportster 1200 w/o ABS))) Sporster has much more fun to ride but I will change it for something modern with some electronic systems on board. Intensive braking on Sportster often blocks the rear wheel, especially in wet or cold conditions and it is scary)))

Nice. I too started on a $1500 Chinese clone of a Ruckus with only a 150cc and I feel like it was the right choice to start off in to get comfortable with city dynamics. Only cost me $1500, so it wasn't a big investment and I ended up gifting it to my friend's son for him to learn on.

Very much depends what is meant by beginner. If you do a DAS course in the UK it's very unlikely you'd want any of these 300cc bikes, you'll be learning on a 650 so you'll probably want an ER6N, SV650 or similar. I just bought a DL650 as my first bike and it's brilliant.

I agree. On my CBT I used the Honda hornet 125 and at the end of the training the instructors let me try the Honda Nkd CB650 🤩 OMG What a bike! I’m doing the DAS next weekend and I can’t wait to practice on that bike.

@@veronicaalessandrello1022 The smallest Hornet Honda ever made was their original one back in the 90's, and it had a 250cc inline 4. You definitely didn't ride a Hornet on a CBT.

What about Honda CBF 600 ABS for the second motorbike for a short girl - 152cm tall? We both wanted criuser so I bought Honda Shadow 125cc. I drove a little, got the driven licence and bought Kawasaki Versys 650. Not because I stopped to love cruisers but I reallized it's better bike to learn. Now it's her turn. She'll drive Shadow for a while and will change for something bigger. And we consider CBF 600, as I said. Of course it has to be lowerd first.

I considered most of these bikes and eventually went with 390 Duke at the most lightweight, powerful, relatively modern and cheap option, despite I cannot reach the ground while seated. The only drawback I see after a season of riding is it being too slow and extremely uncomfortable for longer highway rides, but that's just not the proper bike for that! Smaller tracks, gymkhana, like you said in the vid, this was an awesome experience. Also loved the punch packed in this baby engine, in every use case I tested! Another point worth mentioning is that the bike is cheap to maintain, robust to crash and relatively cheap to rebuild after crash. I had plenty of that too... The only really "bad" part is the beautiful TFT dash, which is costly to replace. Also, the small dukes are different from anything else beginner-ish by the enormous community and availability of tuning/quality aftermarket parts around the world. I rode BMW 310 in one of my courses and later on as I progressed, just forget it, that's pure trash in my opinion. MT-03 (unmentioned naked version of R3) -- I guess you will have nothing but the original parts. If I was to choose my maiden bike one again, I would love to try the Ninja with straight handlebars, good specs. Otherwise, Duke all the way!

Indeed! By the grace of the universe I was lucky enough in my wisdom to rent out an 390 Duke first thing after I passed the MSF. Then I rented 10 others in the same month and the 390 was my favorite.

I got my first bike few years ago. It was kawasaki ninja 636 2003 last carburator and I sold it in couple of months and almost gave up riding. Finally last year by coincidence I found Aprilia pegaso Strada 2007 and I fall in love with riding again. Now I don't want to get off my pegaso and after almost 7k kms I'm not even close considering to buy any other bike! ❤

Hi, I have a 2014 Cbr500r, which is a similar chassis & motor to yours. I've been learning on it for the last year and love it. It's smooth and easy to ride. Not hugely fast, but quicker than most any car when you need it to be - v good economy. Maybe a bit heavy, but so am I! Lol Honda reliability can't be beat. The FA is more upright and no fairings, so more comfortable to ride and less plastic to fix if you drop it.

I'd also add Honda NC750 here. A bit heavy, but low seat and low gravity center on 2021+ models. Plenty of power but 'forgiving' throttle. Slim for city traffic, and comfortable for long trips with passenger and luggage. On my opinion, it's a bike that you will not grow over pretty fast.

Lindgren) Born in Finland (model 1949) I started riding, absolute beginner after four years of challenging TKR operations, and revisions in Sweden and here in Thailand (Skiing accident). After wheelchair, 4-wheel and crutches. My Thai wife bought me a motorcycle. The price point, ergonomics flat-footlight cruiser ergonomics. Fitted me like a glove. Also fully equipped i.e.crash bars, turn-by-turn navigation and passenger seat (pillion or billion 1,000,000,000?) The motorcycle for a 72 year-old TKR survivor. Trust me! RE are a bit on the heavy side which is not very good for a beginner. I wanted purchase Himalayan at first but i stopped because of weight and power. My first big bike was a Versys 300 X which was perfect, I am a bit surprised it is not on the list by the way because it is really a very good bike which has a lot of capabilities.

Recently rented a CB500X for a day and felt very comfortable right away though, whereas trying a Yamaha MT-07 rather felt like sitting on top of the bike instead of "in" the bike 🤷

One other thing, buy used. You will drop it. I ride a 2020 Harley Street Bob. Relatively easy to ride for me, not so much a beginner. I started on a Honda CRF230L at 41 years old. Dealerships are full of $30,000+ Harleys with extremely low miles. Midlife crisis bikes. Some guys rode tiny dirtbikes as kids and think after not riding for 30 or 40 years a Road Glide or Street Glide is a great choice when they finally made it and Viagra is just not enough. Start small and work up, your ego can kill you. Sadly if these midlife crisis guys would have got the entry bike first in a year or 2 the bike Harley would have been managable. My KTM 450EXC/SM actually requires more focus than my 107CI (1750cc) Harley, engine size can be deceiving.

Mr. Puff, I would like to know your opinion regarding following choice: CFMoto 150 (155kg, 14hp) or Kawasaki Z400 (170kg, 44hp), given my height is 176cm and weight with equip is 92-93kg. Due to some circumstances, I will have to practice a lot of initial riding techniques on my own motorbike (even the throttle control and braking), and trying to understand whether it is worth to go straight to 400cc engine, or it is better to buy a 150cc first?

Hi! It depends on circumstances (like parts availability, would you need to ride at highways, are you planning to carry luggage). I personally would probably go with CFMoto initially, it's rather cheap and you can practice on it without worrying too much about dropping it. But Z400 is pretty good bike too, I can't say anything against it. You can really pick any of those two bikes, I think either one will be a good choice.

For me it will be mostly city driving plus a lots of learning before I hit our crazy traffic. Parts-wise, 150NK will be 2.5 times cheaper than Z400 (both new), guess same for parts. I would take your advice to start with 150NK, it will be easy to sell it anyway, once I "grow" over it.

LOL That's actually the story of my life. No Ducati on your list and my very first bike is a 2004 Ducati Monster 800i.e. Maneuverability? Kinda good over 60Kmh, just poor and little at low speeds. Weight? 180Kg with no liquids. ABS? Nope, I'm counting 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 while squeezing the front brake as you told. But I saved this gem from the wreck demolitions, the previous owner gave me it for free in order to keep it roaring again. It was in working order but abandoned from 4 years. Good deal for the mechanic ( it was totally restored to new), good deal for me. Now to me the bad parts to learn your techniques with this kinda heavy elephant at low speeds. :) Thanks!

I've got my motorcycle license 2 years ago at 50 years old and some people around told me that I should start with smaller bike. I bought a V-Strom650 and one month later I changed it for an FJR1300, not enough power in my case. A friend of mine, got his license at the same time and for him, an 650 bike It's enough for his capacity

I mean the first 4 bikes are almost the same, the only differences is the style and siting position. KTM, Husqvarna, Dominar are all sharing the same engine and are all daughters of the same company. Suzuki SV650 is very reliable, basic, cheap spares and practical. For a smaller bike the new Triumph 400cc engine seems great on paper but it should be simple, easy to service and reliable. For a sportsbike, the daytona 765 or street triple 765 is lovely or an earlier 675 street triple. I advise riders to list what they want and how they will use it. Touring, faster middleweight roadster, commuter or whether a bike used off road too. Do you want to ride with a pillion? A cruiser or bobber look. Budget is important as is servicing, spares and ease of maintenance. In the real world if you dont have quite deep pockets, BMW, ducati, ktm, MV agusta and some aprilia are expensive but the 660 aprilia seems really good and the guzzi 850TT seems nice as do the triumph tiger 660 or even triumph street cup. But reliability points mainly to well proven engines and models like yamaha 700cc twin like MT07, honda twins of 500 to 750cc, suzuki v strom 650 or even Drz400, kawasaki ninja but its a minefield of spec sheets, prices etc, but speak to other riders who know their bikes well and can recomend something that will suit your budget and type of use it will get. A honda deauville for example is a solid, cheapish secondhand shaft drive bike with fairing, panniers, v twin engine that two can tour on cheaply, very reliable where it will last a long time. Kawasaki w650, W800 twins like enfield 650 interceptor or triumph bonneville 900 are desirable too. Do research, biking is great fun.

Shorter people need not worry.... lol, take a DL/Safety course & some places furnish a bike so you'll get ideas by riding theirs while learning the basics about the sport. I had a Honda Transalp w/ a 600cc engine but I was plenty strong to pick her up & that's a good thing b/c I dropped it several times early on. Riding a dual-sport allows you to commute & to go off the road some which gives you more places to ride more of the time. Dual Sports allows you to use your bike more so you learn a lot faster! Most people don't keep the 1st bike so get one, rag it the F#@K out, & get another one. The great thing about the 2nd bike is you've got a lot more knowledge & direction. Be safe out there & I'm here looking to get my 1st bike since the late 90's...... I'm a noob once again, lmFao....Go Figure,,,,,,,,,, peace & GB ALL

I got a 2013 bandit 650 as first. Don't recommend it. I love it, but it's very heavy for a naked bike (250 kg wet) and it rides like a cow. Power is also kinda boring because of the weight-to-power ratio (86 HP stock) and after 2 months of riding I'm already bored with it and want something faster, and for sure lighter. Looking for an r6 now.

For training occasionally almost any bike will do. For more or less serious gymkhana riding the bike must be cheap, with big lean angles and small turning radius. And it shouldn't suffer much when you drop it. DRZ400, KLX300SM - I would probably consider one of them.

Do not buy a new bike, as a beginner! I wrecked my first bike, a brand new 1995 Kawasaki ZX6R Ninja, after having it for just 3 months. A badly judged overtake of a truck, because I had been travelling too close behind it, and had missed the "No overtaking hidden dip" sign at the side of the road. I was overtaking the truck when a car emerged, out of a hidden dip, just in front of me. I swerved the car, but in a panic took a fist full of front brake and locked the front wheel putting the bike on its nose and the headlight into the tarmac. The aluminium frame folded where the ram air intakes entered the frame on impact, putting the front wheel through the radiator and sending me over the handlebars head over heals down the road for 50m+. I ended up with a scuffed helmet and leathers, a stiff neck and a twisted ankle. The bike didn't fare too well. My second bike was a 1997 Suzuki RF900 that I paid £1400 for and sold it 10 years later for £750. The engine on the RF900 is bulletproof. The handling was pretty good and very forgiving. The bike was quite heavy though and the pegs were quite high for someone over 6ft 2" tall. I had no problem riding it in all weather conditions, including snow sometimes I sold the bike over 10 years ago and haven't ridden since, though your videos are getting me interested in bike ownership again.

I learnt to ride on a CB500F, it was a great beginner bike, so I assume the X must be as well. Above 500, I think the more horse power you get, the worse it is for a beginner, because it's hard to practise slow manoeuvres when your bike wants to go fast.

Can you actually start riding on a 400cc motorbike in much of the world? Is the UK unique in restricting novice riders to 125cc? It's strange to see videos calling bikes with half-litre engines begimmers' bikes, and lists of beginners' bikes that include not one 125.

I enjoy your channel very much but most of these recommendations are nuts. Apart from the lower powered KTMs (which are very expensive), and the small BMWs, nearly every motorcycle you recommend is WAY too powerful for a beginner. I understand a beginner to be someone who has only just passed their test or is still a learner who is restricted to 125cc . A 900cc, 100hp bike is madness for a "beginner". You don't mention any Honda 500c which are very well made and still have PLENTY of power. For the first time I think you are plain wrong in your recommendations.

Same engine doesn't really mean the same bike:) It's sort of like saying that Corvette and Tahoe are the same car because of similar v8 engine. Try them yourself, they are very different.

Hey Andrei, you were missing out on the "hooligan" of scooters. Honda X-ADV. I would call it a beginner bike. It is fun and easy to ride, automatic..... sorry, DCT ;-) The downside is the price and the weight. (I still need to by one when I finally sold my R12RT) Merry X-Mas
