what i mostly hear is car reviewers who complain about how abruptly the engine comes back on when you take your foot off the gas pedal. you're totally right, its a convenient feature, which can actually be shut off for those who don't like it anyway

the start-stop function makes more sense in a hybrid where the engine can be turn back on by the secondary electric motor. In the case of a gas only motor the only way to turn the engine back on is by using the starter motor. I believe that the over use of the starter will eventually kill it prematurely and the savings produced by this function will not be enough to cover the cost of the repair.

So if I use the push button ignition on my 2012 Optima EX on the long stop lights on the way to work in the same auto function...will it come up on the dealer hook up if I need warranty work on the starter? thx.

I have the auto start/stop feature both on my 428i and 535i and on both the is this annoying vibration upon starting the engine when you release the break. Also, when you live in a hot place like Texas the AC cuts off when the engine is stopped at a traffic light.

I drove a few cars with start/stop button. It is a very good solution when you are in big traffic jams and your car doesn't move for some time or when red lights last more than 2 minutes. What is bad about this is that the system shuts the engine too often. For example, when you have a stop sign, you press the brake and if the car doesn't move for 1-2 seconds, the system will shut the engine. In these cases, you simply turn off the system because at very short standstill, it will shut the engine every time which is a bit anoying.

Initially I had my concerns about the start/stop feature but when I tried it several times I changed my mind (2014 BMW X5) , I don't feel vibration or sound and I admit that BMW did a very good job in that regard (at least on the X5's) it's fast enough, by the time my foot leave the break pedal and before reaching the gas pedal the car would be running and creeping, so it's fast enough, but the problem is in my head I guess, I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing that the starter is working 20-30 times on a traffic day even if it was designed to do so ( I guess my brain is not ready to let go lol) , so I don't use it in heavy traffic! I actually use it when there is no much traffic and pulling up to red light, I like how quite the car would be , I also activate the auto hold feature so I can pull my leg and stretch it and the car is standing still, until I decide to hit the gas then the car starts and goes and still without delay. Overall I like the feature and use it from time to time, I would say about 5-10% of the time, and the primary reason I use it is comfort/quietness not for fuel economy.

I share your opinion about the Star&stop feature. In fact, since i´m used to this i´m missing it in any car i drive without. Now, driving a Car without S&S, i´m always asking myself why the engine is still running on redlights. I love this system, i did from the first day i experienced this back in 2001 in an Audi A2 3L TDI. And with a good sounding Car like the C400 or the upcoming C63 you have that "wake up sound" on every start, fantastic. There is another point i totally agree with, it is the seating position. I always had the feeling to seat ON the car, not IN the car in a Mercedes, exactly like you mentioned and this is one of the things i love BMW for. In a 3 Series i feel like beeing embedded in the car, beeing a part of it. And in my personal opinion, the seating position affects the feeling you have in the car, and a good position is not just about sportiness, it´s also about comfort to me. Great Review, Have a nice day

I'm with you. So even if we save $0.07 gas each day, we're replacing a starter, 3 times as often... so I pay anyway. Save the environment argument? I wonder what the energy inputs are to build more starters... All the stop/start craze seems to be a result of fear-mongering about the environment, where people see an upside and wholly disregard a downside. Aside from that, C400 became my next move... initially planned a C300 but I'm uninterested in the small displacement with turbo.

In hind-site, doesn't most of the engine wear and tear occur when starting since the oil dripped some down into the oil pan.... so I initially thought of "wearing out a started" but yeah "wearing on engine" is relevant too.

Start-stop is fuel efficient only with 30sec stop and longer, as starting the engine consuming some extra fuel. C class coming with best auto stop system, but still having it on for every single stop is super annoying.. With the Agility Select switch set to Individual mode auto start/stop feature can be turned off and the transmission set to fully manual although it will gear down into 2nd at around 25km/hr. Every time you start the car up you have to go to Individual mode if you want these settings because once you turn the car off it resets to comfort mode and auto start/stop. :)

MotoMan good job with the review well done. Regarding your question on the start stop... the reason why i hate it because ... 70% of the engine damage is done on startup alone.. causes significant wear and tear. For a man like me who intends to keep his cars at least 5 year.... the 1% of fuel saving will end up costing quite a few more bucks in the long run. Moreover in hot countries... it effects the AC cooling when the engine is switched off.. i know this because i have the same C class.

100% true. Most evidence (and expert opinions) suggest that start/stop is another invention meant only to help sell more cars..no REAL ecological reason behind it. But I think that tha is part consumers fault - there are so-called "mental barriers" of mpg, like 30, 40, 50. We should not bash car manufacturers for trying to achieve best numbers to impress clients, but we should accuse them for doing that without thinking about long term usage and reliability (buuuut probably they do it on purpose ;P).

***** Ummm...I think it is you who doesn't have a clue about mechanics. Oil stays around the engine for a VERY long time once it starts moving around there. When the car has been standing for many hours/days, yes, the oil will slowly drain out of the engine components, which isn't the case here.

Why don't you guys like the 'Start-Stop' feature? A) While it usually restarts immediately, they key word is "USUALLY". Not ALWAYS! B) For those of us who may not happen to do a great deal of city driving, it's simply an unnecessary bit of electronic interference.

Start stop almost started with BMW. And just like their first iDrive solution, it was (and still is actually) pretty rough and unrefined. Maybe people got a bad taste for it. I personally like advancements in tech whether it's already been refined to a point where everyone loves it, or when it first comes out.

So I get that Airbus opened an A320 plant in Alabama.. But how did MB "bring" Boeing? Boeing has the Dreamliner plant in Charleston, SC because it's cheaper to build/employ there (at the loss of WA state). But how does any of that relate to MB?! Manufacturers manufacture where its cheapest.. Be that China, India, or good ol' Alabama. Also.. McDonnell Douglas did have a plant in China under the mid-90's Trunkliner program.. Just curious as to what you were trying to point out there. Great review as always.

HOW does it only have 329 hp out of a V6 bi-turbo engine? That's seriously low on power when you consider power per liter plus 2 turbos. They must be the smallest turbos ever made.... I've been thinking of getting this exact car, because while the CLA45 is fast, it's not a nice by far. I currently have a stage 2 WRX STI stage2+ with some extra leather and carbon fibre trim. I spent about 70K in total on it and I'm ready for some added luxury. Btw, I will canyon carve in it since it replaces a 2013 WRX STI. My Subie goes to the track and eats V8's too :)

I haven't driven the C class yet, so can't comment on its start/stop. If it's smooth and doesn't take too long to re-engage, then I'd be using it all the time. My friend has an ML350, and it's very smooth in restarting, and does so very quickly. I completely forgot about it after just 5 minutes of driving his car. I think that most people are under the false impression that it somehow damages their car, mainly their starter (starter is much-beefier in the start/stop-equipped cars to make up for this), and others think that when the car re-starts, it eats a lot of fuel (like in the carburetor days), which is not the case either.

Every time I walk across a car that does start/stop, the sound makes that car look as if it has an engine problem or engine stall from a manual transmission. I would be embarrassing for the driver. Better tech would be to shut off half of the engine valves which are more discreet. An example for this would be the Chevrolet Impala SS V8/V4 tech a few years back.

Why do people hate start/stop? It's kind of a no-brainer: 1) Most people know that You should not stop your turbocharged engine after havy usage, but most of actual start/stop systems does not know that. Countless examples...You can imagine a fast highway drive, and stopping in front of a tollbooth. 2) The starter - yes, yes it ofthen is stronger than in "normal" car, but not that strong:) Talk to a good delar mechanic, and ask him for a personalk opinion about that (I did that), an probably he will tell You that Your starter is going to die much much quicker. 3) Battery - same thing... 4) In most cars that system does not work at all if outside temperature is lower than X degrees (in Mini/BMW it is 41 degrees Fahrenheit).
@ACabral711
@ACabral711 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree with you on all points.I never thought start/stop was a good idea because it puts extra wear on the starter, starter gear, and the flex plate between the flywheel and transmission. Though it would help in fuel economy, the headache of some of these components failing and the costs associated with repairing the car would outweigh the savings. I'd rather pay more in gas than get stranded at a light because the starter went. Plus if the car is on but the engine is off, then the alternator is off, so the battery gets drained by the radio, then when the car turns back on, the alt has to sap some power from the engine? This could kill the battery in heavy rush hour traffic, and I'm not sure if there is a failsafe that turns the car back on to keep the battery charged.

1. most vehicles now use a water-cooled turbo making your first objection redundant imo. they're designed for people who haven't got the time or are mentally complacent to do a run-down procedure which oil-cooled turbos demanded. 2. i've been using this system for the past 6 years in 5-day week heavy commute traffic with zero failures or problems caused by this system. no flat batteries, no starter failures, no breakdown call-outs :) Alex Cabral there's usually a voltage threshold beyond which the vehicle will re-start itself. more recently i've noticed an increase in manufacturers switching to regenerative storage to fire the starter instead of placing a heavy load on the battery. my first two cars relied on the battery, my next (which is on order) uses re-gen. the stop/start process is usually disabled until the engine has reached operating temperature, ie. the engines in the last cars i've owned haven't shut down during the initial stages of my commute.

First off, what a car! I think the start and stop function is a little gimmicky. I feel that the fuel savings would be so minimal for my daily driving, and that I'm never going to see the money I've saved. I also think that its not worth feeling the shutter every time I step on the gas. But, for some people who have a long commute with many start and stop, it may be worth it to them.

I hate start/stop function for very simple reason. Fuel saving its not enough for bi turbo damage. If you are driving hard, sport and than is going your engine switch off immediately your bi turbo is very hot (it can be 300 C) and needs wait 1 minute before switch off engine (cooling turbos) but this start/stop function dont care about bi turbo and thats really dangerous I was in garage with my Mercedes and start/stop function is deactivated forever from my car

Why no "stop-start?" The upside seems to be "a little gas savings" but 5% maybe... seems unlikely. Sitting at a stop light for 8 seconds or 20 seconds doesn't eat much gas idling. Pressing the gas on a car that's fun to drive eats that saving in 1 second with your foot on the gas so it seems a tiny upside. Downside, starter might be used 25 times in a trip of groceries instead of twice. Why am I beating on maintenance items and more costs in order to save a few cents of gas. (Incidentally, the "save the environment" argument would seem to be negated by the inputs/energy to be building more starters...)

I hate the start-stop feature, I mean for traffic lights OK but when I'm queing for a motorway on-ramp during rush hour, and everyones just constantly bunny hopping a few feet, it really starts to get a annoying. I was alongside a Porsche SUV in this situation and the thing stop-started like 15 times in the space of a 30 metres, I think people just don't like the idea of making the engine constantly go on and off, like flipping the switch for incandescent bulbs on and off really quickly. Humans naturally like a feeling of regularity and being constant, even if it's impossible to happen, we don't like the that slight fear in our minds of being 'caught off guard' by this feature. And for those people that like to have a drag race at every red light on the way to work, then this feature sucks as well.

Why a lot of ppl don't like start stop feature is because the other car companies' start stop feature are choppy. For example, a 3 series BMW, it is very choppy where as this C class is surprising smooth when the motor starts while engaged in gear.

A few thoughts... First I had no idea this power plant existed. Whether that means I'm not paying attention or it's just not talked about much is here or there. Second I feel like the power numbers are weak for 3 liters and not one but two turbos. And it doesn't even make low end power. "I digress", finally the naming. Why 400? It's a 3 liter that doesn't even make 400 horse? Why not 250 and 350? Once again, I digress. Lastly, after finally, the car looks huge on camera. Looks like the hood of an sls and the rear deck lid of a cla. Reminds me of my buddy's E320 from about a decade ago size wise and 62 grand? That's a lot of pennies but people will buy (prob lease) them by the handful none the less. Interior is beautiful minus iPad. Another interesting piece once again. We'll be in touch. Cheers!

Don't know if you care to have your questions answered but I figure I'd try anyways. There's a 3 liter in all three big German luxury sport sedans. BMW, Audi, and MB. And as you probably know. BMW's 335i's 3 liter produces 300 hp 300 lb ft. from a "twin power" turbo, which literally mean twin-turbo's. The Audi S4 with it's Supercharger produces 354 hp 333 lb ft of torque, but isn't much faster than the Mercedes to 60. And the Mercedes has it's 329 hp, but 354 lb ft of torque. So really it's not that weak compared to its competition. And also it leaves room for the C450 AMG coming next fall (with around 370 hp), which will replace the C400 totally after a year. Why 400? Mercedes is just weird like that. But no I think it's because last years cars were the 250 and 350 so to make it clear that the new models have more power they gave them higher numbers. Yeah it's an expensive car, but considering the fact that it's more stylish than the bmw 335i and audi s4 (at least in my opinion); sits in the middle of the specs of the other two, has some "cool" features you won't find in the other two (i.e. air suspension); and the fact that performance and handling is so much improved overall and a lot closer to its competition than previous years, 62 grand looks pretty good. Really if you build the audi and bmw with the same safety and technology features, and their respective versions of AWD and adaptive suspensions, your looking at range of only a few thousand dollars or so between them. It just depends on what you want.

They probably could. It's just marketing strategy for the German companies, particularly BMW and Mercedes. BMW obviously can get more power out of there's, as they do in the M3, M4, but they probably say to themselves "300 is a good round number, and we don't want to encroach on our M sells." And for Mercedes as I already said it allows them to create another more expensive model between the C400 and the Mercedes-AMG C63, in the C450 AMG which will have the same 3.0 liter bi-turbo engine but will put out somewhere around 370 hp.

Why are people leery of start-stop? Immediacy. Or, the even slightest perception of a lack thereof. When the light turns green, most people's response time isn't as immediate as the guy behind it wants it to be ('cause they're fiddling with the radio, picking their noses, etc.). So, when Mr Asleep at the Wheel steps on it to catch up, even the quarter-second delay between when he mats it, the engine fires up, the clutch packs engage, the torque convertor spools up and the car lunges forth... feels like an eternity. The embarrassment from awaking from one's stupor at green, to when overcompensating forward motion is achieved SHALL NOT BE IMPEDED. Also, the subconscious tendency to overcompensate with additional go-pedal pressure due to the longer-than-expected response time can result in an unwanted surge that takes more than a test drive to get used to.

That said, you know I am kinda of biased because we LOVE Dave Leone here at the show but I would be remiss in my job if I didn't suggest you to go on a proper test drive in a CTS V Sport. If you don't need the four doors . . . and I can't believe I am about to type this . . . Lexus RC F. Let me know what you end up with.

Almost fully loaded it costs 70,000 plus tax in Canada..... :/ Sucks but I think I'll wait 2 years then get it because I still expect it to depreciate like the old C-Class and virtually any other Mercedes. Auto stop/start: I'm pretty sure it's the noise. Clearly, a car makes a constant humming noise, to which we become habituated over the course of a journey. If the engine stops and then starts again, it can be jarring, preventing us from becoming easily habituated.

Motoman, 1st off, thanks for creating the most enjoyable car reviews on the internet. I watch your reviews of cars I have zero interest in just to be humored by your monologue. Regarding the start stop feature, I personally have 2 issues with it. (1) not only does it shut off the engine, but along with that comes the heat or air conditioning, which I discovered in my E350 from an actual experience. And on those overly hot of cold days, its just not worth the saved MPG. (2) If I ever do want to accelerate quickly from a light, I lose about a second for the car to start up, which when accelerating, can be crucial.

Mercedes certainly raised the bar with the new C ... Especially in the interior department, word is Audi went back to drawing board after they approved the new A4 when they saw the new C. I really really love the new interior, they got everything right (except for the screen). The Brushed aluminum, The wood choices (love the open pore word), The Shape of the Instrument Cluster ... Its like you are looking at a McLaren P1's rear end, The AC vents, The center console, the stitching & the door panels ... Must have it with the Burmester speakers though ... The standard speakers have a black plastic grille & it ruins such a beautiful interior. I hate the screen because it looks like an add on Navigation system (god I hate those) & it ruins a Meisterwerk of an interior! Can't say the same about the 2015 CLS though ... The S & C renewed my faith in Mercedes' ability to design beautiful interiors. I don't really have anything against the Start\Stop feature & i don't mind it as long as I can disable it ... It can get uncomfortable in congested areas. I think peoples hatred for it came from BMW, I heard there are only two ways to disable it in earlier models: You either unplug the fuse (sorta like the fake exhaust) or let the dealership do it for you. Man, the C went a long way since the W202 rust bucket & the plastic W204. Hope the boys at Alabama ironed out the kinks of the OG ML ... That thing was a ticking reliability bomb .. My father was looking to buy one & all his mechanic friends (Mercedes specialists) told him To Run For His Life lol. If you to buy a C400, Which one would you get? The one with the classic grille, star ornament & chrome trim on the side? Or the AMG Sport\Line one? As Always M, excellent video & btw I love the background music ... Got a 90s action movies vibe to it.

The problem with the stop-start system is that the systems are connected to the A/C of the car. So when the car stops at a stop light (or any other stop) the A/C will turn off as well so you no longer get the cold air that you are enjoying in the car. If you live in Florida like I do, you will know how important that 3 min stop light is without the air conditioning. This is why I don't like that particular feature.

I don't take issue to the start/stop as long as it doesn't result in repair costs. But what bothers me is that municipalities fail to sychronize their traffic control systems (lights) to maximize vehicle fuel efficiency by allowing straight flow traffic. Not only would it result in reduced emmisions & better fuel economy, but it also reduces collisions as well as encourages drivers to maintan posted speed. Before governments are passing along a carbon tax, they should be making traffic efficiency laws. Without them, carbon taxing can result in governments NOT creating traffic efficiency...and that's just wrong.

Mr. MotoMan try to observe in longer time period the EFFECT OF start/stop bullshit on DIESEL engines. All this feature does is increasing consumption, carbonizing all parts in engine including Turbo charger, and killing battery mainly on short routes (esp. winter season). Imagine your self running marathon 42 km, and after getting to Finish point, you would just stop and not moving, i am sure your body would colapse as you changed the energy flow so radically. This is the case with Turbo charger when you get off the highway and stop on red light right after. This act multiplied by X times, for sure you will get an engine light warning. So now you know some Cons about this sick feature, and be careful when you say next time this is an awesome feature, you may be stuck in the middle of nowhere due to failure from getting the engine stop and start for unreasonably many times. This is all about Emision regulation, and proves the oposite. As all the shit what comes out from government in BRUSSEL. Idiots behind the desk. At least, and hopefully can be swiched off by single touch.

start stop is intrusive and uncomfortable,,also ,,i dont think is a good idea having my engine starting an stopping 60 times a day..i m not mechanic but i think this feature will be bad for the engine at the long term. the gas saving with this feature is not relevant at all,,but the amount of money you will probably need to use in the future to repair and change engines parts will be huge.just my opinion...i repeat i m not a mechanic. this is just what my senses tell me.

Neglecting the start/stop function (ECO) that may cause engine and/or other components failure after long time usage, the AC ques that someone mentioned is true, esp in hot weather. The AC will become just electrical fan and yet the ECO mode is still enabled no matter what temperature it is! I had the 2012 C-class before as well as this new 2015 now and the first thing I MUST do after started the engine...is disable this useless feature! If people want to save fuel, go buy a diesel engine car. If people are too serious to save more money and fuel, buy a hybrid car. People can afford to buy a Mercedes Benz SHOULD dare not care to save a penny on fuel consumption, I'm sorry to say this.
