I live in England and one more reason for us to be grateful to Americans is that you have helped convinced BMW bean counters to make manual Z4 until 1st Quarter 2026! I have ordered one of these as it is refined (suspension and air control) enough to get my wife to sit in it without having a bad hair day, but engaging enough to have fun in the curves when you are alone. The manual is also a trip down memory lane for us as we mostly all learn on manuals and first cars are usually manual. Thank you for great videos, your passion for driving and highlighting the opportunities of these cars and building demand as they enter their last years, a future classic I am sure!

My first Z4 was bought used and was a 2008 with a manual transmission. I’m so thankful that I was taught how to drive a standard at 15. Shifting my 2008 Z4 was so much fun! This is why I'm sticking to my old 370z. It's manual, it's a large N/A engine, and it's one of the old "real" coupes. After investing some time and effort to remove all the tiny annoyances they're known for, it's an excellent driver's car. That being said, I'd love another weekend car, the Z4 manual - as it would really be nice to do some open-top drifting....

I own a low mileage 2006 Z4 M Roadster and recently had the opportunity to drive this new 2025 Z4 manual. They are very different cars. The new Z4 is longer, wider, taller and heavier, and it shows in the driving experience. While marginally faster 0-60, it offers a less tactile driving experience overall. The 2006 Roadster is far less well mannered, and is very mechanical in both feel and sound, and more nimble under performance driving conditions. Still, I'd be very happy to own the new Z4 manual.

I have a 2007 Z4MC. It is a raw, primal, vicious driving experience, unless you are on an interstate behaving. Driving it hard is violent and dramatic. It's magnificent and you won't find any modern car to match the feeling of it. I had the non-M version before it, and though the spec was as M as they came from the factory, it was a good bit tamer. The S54 is a wild animal. The Top Gear show where they compared it with the Porsche Boxter was spot-on.

Back in 2005, I "inherited" from a just-died relative, a then-new, BMW 325ci coupe. It has the regularly aspirated straight-six (188 horsepower) and a FIVE SPEED M-A-N-U-A-L transmission. It's also a TOTALLY rare color: "Sonoma metallic beige" (sort of a "champagne-ish light bronze) with a premium LEATHER sports seat interior (beige). We've put about $900 a year into routine dealer maintenance [and aging part replacements] and I've laboriously "clayed" and carnuba-waxed the exterior, and kept the interior spotless, shampoo'd and leather-oiled. Sure it's not a Z4, nor a total "rocket" -- but it's BOMB fast, corners (stock) like a slot car, and gets 33mpg highway. It has the PERFECT power to weight ratio and is INSANELY comfortable in front. My point? THIS is a "sweet spot" that I think BMW and others have FORGOTTEN how to do. Probably with their fixation on stupid "computer" crap. BTW, it's only got 71,000 miles on it too. Whee!

For (most of) Europe it will be 2029. If someone happens to want a manual in america, best get a down payment or purchase on one soon, as they likely will not last in that market long - the prices will also go up as time transpires. If one happens to know someone stationed in Europe for the american military - one could still have a manual shipped back here, and for not as much as one might think

Just sold my Z3M Roadster owned for 20 years. Heavy clutch did my left knee & hip in. So now own R231 SL500. But I've not ruled out a manual if new Z4 clutch lighter perhaps. Meantime I'm really delighted with my SL

Love the Z4 and I'm so happy they've reintroduced the manual transmission in this latest version. I owned a 2003 2.5 years ago before switching to the Porsche mid-engine platform (a base Cayman, then 718 GTS 2.5), and have always kept the Z4 in consideration for switching back, despite my love for all things Porsche. That said, your comments comparing the new Z4 to the Porsche 718 GTS 4.0 (6 cyl) to the Porsche 718 4-cylinder could use some additional nuance. That's because Porsche did produce a 4-cylinder 2.5 liter GTS that's actually quicker than the 4.0 6 cylinder. If the 4.0 "trounces" the Z4, then surely the quicker 2.5 does as well. The sound issue is completely overrated, and a low mileage GTS 2.5 can be had for about 30% cheaper than the GTS, and about 10K less than the Z4, with better performance and Porsche character. I wouldn't have mentioned it in this otherwise stellar review, but you opened the door. 🙂

I have recommendation. This car in Alpina flavour. Oh my, that would be a stunner. And I am pretty sure they would fix the black top dilema.

One thing that I've noticed in the configurator is you cannot replace the piano black with either the aluminum mesh or aluminum tetragon AND still spec the manual transmission. A small thing perhaps but if you're keeping the car for the long run that piano black trim will look terrible in short order.
@GFCicotte3 ай бұрын
Sadly you are correct on both counts --stuck with black and the metal would look better imo. Another thing you can't get with manual is adaptive cruise.
@MotoManTV2 ай бұрын
For the life of me, I do not understand why they are forcing the black trim both inside and outside the car. This is more of a 'mature' sports car, hence a satin finish chrome on the outside with even a satin wood on the inside would do sooo much for this package.
@AP-cc1uw2 ай бұрын
@@MotoManTV Totally agree. A walnut finish would be amazing but that'll never happen again.

Great review. However, I believe the color of your car is San Remo Green, vs. the Deep Frozen Green. The distinction is in the price: the Frozen version is the one that adds 3,000 to the price, whereas the SRG is free.
@Bensonater113 ай бұрын
Honestly whats killing the Z4 m40 with this package is its price. I mean other than having a drop roof, an M2, M340, supra, are cheaper. And for just a grand or two more, you get a Boxter S. Or if you don't want a 4 cylinder and don't mind used - a 981 GTS
@CJN4737Ай бұрын
Bullshit. Go to Porsche website and a Boxster S with minimal options will be far more expensive than this car. Plus Porsche will dealer will charge you a huge markup fee.

Great great vid! Love seeing you super legit happy on a test drive. BMW once again has to be saluted for making so many great cars in this day/age. Also love love love the old UX with its knobs & switches with tactile feel. The rub for me: An M2 is cheaper. I would be hard pressed as a guy that can only afford 1 nice sports car in the stable at a time, to not get into a M2 vs this with price factored in.

It’s easy. Do you want a convertible or not?

@@Love2Cruise Not really, but then again I like the type of UX in the Z4 much more than the most current one. But then the M2 is cheaper..... argh! 1st-world problems & all that. LoL

This manual is better than the one in the M2, if that matters...
@Love2Cruise3 ай бұрын
@@loseerich493 There you go. Another consideration: Are you planning on doing track days? If you are, get the M2. I had an S2000 for 17 years and getting a convertible to be track ready is way more involved (i.e. rollbar) than a car with a real roof. If you are not planning on doing track days, than any convertible is more fun than the fastest car in the world.

Do we care about the .3 second difference 0-60? You and I are old enough that when we were young, 4 speed and 5 speed manual transmissions were faster to shift than 3-speed slushboxes and more usable torque because of the extra gearing. Fast forward 40 years and automatics have 8, 9 or 10 speeds, fast computers and exotic tech that would have been only found on F1 cars. So automatics are now generally faster than the human foot/hand combo. So there is no practical reason to want a stick for the usual reasons of performance off the line, gear decision in a turn, more usable torque or even fuel economy. The main reason these days is nostalgia for us aging enthusiasts that remember the thrill of that snick-snick feeling of finding the right gear and having a blast carving the mountain highway. Or at least for you....I'm too tall to drive this car, much less to operate it with a third pedal. I learned manual shifting on a 1970-ish Chevy C/K pickup with three-on-the-tree shifting.
@MotoManTV2 ай бұрын
RICK! All good points but I have a saying: Unless you are drawing a paycheck from a race team as an F1 pilot, the faster transmission does nothing for you.
@alangil40Ай бұрын
You are correct that performance is no longer the main draw, but you didn't mention engagement and driver involvement. A manual to me still (and I am old enough as well) is just more engaging and interesting to drive. And contrary to what most people think, the more boring and pedestrian the drive, the more the manual matters. Sure, on a track or going all out in a canyon there is enough excitement from the overall experience to where the difference between a manual and a good automatic might not be pronounced. But on your boring daily commute, a manual sometimes is the only thing that keeps it interesting. Also, I don't care about the .3 second difference to 60mph. The push you feel in the back of your seat is what matters and the push is the same regardless of the .1 second difference between gear changes.
@genericasian2 ай бұрын
I was in the market for a fun, fast, manual transmission daily that was also practical. I landed on an Integra TypeS. It's unfortunate that manuals are commanding a premium these days, with affordable manuals effectively limited to MX-5/GT86/BRZ/WRX/Civic Si. I get it though, we are a specialty market now. And specialty means low volume, which means expensive.
