This guy is really and underrated reviewer. Has all his facts memorized, presented succinctly. Thankfully has actually driven track before and faster cars (so he's not just immediately gushing like some amateurs.. my point here; most people are going to "LOVE" a car the first time they track it). Being able to intelligibly communicate while navigating Laguna Seca at speed is also really incredible. American Chris Harris right here.

Which one would you say is the superior car in terms of performance and driving experience and which would you choose? I currently have an e92 M3 and a corvette stingray z51. I am Trying to decide whether to sell e92 M3 and keep the corvette and get the m2 or M4 or sell both cars and get the 2017 mercedes c63 amg s. I would love to hear your thoughts and keep up the great work! Last thought, can you rank these 5 cars in order in terms of strictly performance on a track 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

+Carlos A SUPER tough call . . . Mainly because the Vette and the M2 don't at all compete with the M4 and C63s. That said, between the M4 and C63s I would have to go C63s for two reasons - the AMAZING V8 in S form and the interior. I also think the Mercedes is a bit prettier in my view. If it were me and trying to keep the most diverse garage - I would probably keep the Vette - provided it is manual - and depending on whether you are going on tracks more than once a month . . . Do the M2. If not, Merc - but that said, I would probably go with something completely different for that second slot . . . Hope that provides some direction.

Good review. As a former E36 M3 and current E46 M3 owner and serious mountain twisty enthusiast, I never felt the urge to upgrade to the last two generations due to their weight and lack of dynamic feel. Sure, they've got more power but it doesn't matter when you're carving tight hairpins. I did consider getting the 1M Coupe but they're all model and their sellers are asking ludicrous prices on the used markets in the US. This Motoman review is consistent with others I've seen. I follow Bill Auberlein on FB (IHG Rewards, Turner Motorsports driver) and he raved that the M2 felt similar to the superlative - feeling E46 M3 at Laguna Seca. If this car is like an E46 M3 with pile of torque in the low to mid range of the torque band, I may scrap my plans to do a 3.4L stroker build with my S54 engine in my E46 M3.

M2. I prefer the smaller size and balance. I currently am in a 350z. When I started driving at 16 I feel like I started with some of the best BMW ever made, the 2003 3 series. I had a 68 mustang and a 2005 rousch mustang gt, and I liked the power there - something I felt the 3 was short on, but NOTHING could touch the engineering. I'm sitting here wondering tonight how many people are looking at a Cayman GT4 and wondering if they want an M2 instead. My 350z is pissed off anytime it's not just tearing itself apart and eating rubber, my BMW would drive anyway, anytime, anywhere. I feel like that forms a bond and allows you to push your driving further than normal because of trust and understanding the car. There is something about the feel of the former 3 series that was just magic. I feel both spoiled to have started driving during that time period, but also tremendously blessed to have had such a high bar set. Oh and I live in North Texas. To me it seems like the M2 is the best thing BMW is putting out. Seems like if I was moving towards an M3 or M4 it would be more do I get an M2 or do I get an M5. I would still pick M2 for myself, but I'm single and 5'10". I wish I still had my old 3 but with about 200 more horsepower than it had.

I actually drive a new M series 1 and I'm thinking about changing that because the 1.6 L 150 hp is not that fast, I'm really confused on which would be the best car between m4 and m2 because I'm 19 years old so a car like the m4 would be too big for me but that fact that m2 has a not proper M engine scares me a bit. I also drive formula BMW and I've 2 of them in my garage so I prefer a performant car over a muscle car that goes hella fast just in the straights. Which car would you recommend to me? Chris from NYC area. I'd pick the M2 anytime over the M4. It's the balance thing that you talked about, it's the tautness and precision of a small car, its lightness and agility (even though I'd like the M2 to be a bit lighter). That's more important than raw power. In fact I have an M2 on order so I've made my choice. Other cars: Boxster S, CLA 45, Fiesta ST with Cobb Stage 3, F12 Berlinetta. Focus RS on order (seemingly forever).

As I already say on the first video, I'm Italian and I leave in Japan. I was for long time looking to get an M3 and the time I was ready to get one, now is M4 and is too long ang big I love this size, because on road I believe the M2 got not the technology better today, but the right size to enjoy it. Yes if you are lucky to have a circuit close to your home any size will be good, but I don't have it. In conclusion I also agree about the look, sensuality and simplicity, which will translate in timeless design. Like the old M3 and the 1M which I love it:)

To answer your question...of all of the M cars I like the 1M, M2, and M4. I'm a bigger man so people would probably say that I would be better suited in the M4 but if I was to choose, I would choose the M2 purely because of the size of the car.

Hey, Motorman! I love your channel. Enjoy the very details of your review. Fit me very very well. I had a 1985 325e brand new in high school. Alpine wheels, Komi shocks adj with knob, suspension technique sway bars. Then 89' 300zx, then 95' M3 after college own my restaurant. Now 3rd 911(996, 997 and 997.2 GT3RS). Okay. I love German engineering for my leisure driving, Japanese for work horse. Also I enjoyed owning the CayenneS for taking my 92 old mother out, comfy for her. Now, I think he new current 3 series getting to be kinda big. Well, human size are getting bigger and taller. But for sport sedan, it is too much weight to lug around. So, I sat in a one series at one time. I felt a bit cramp and cheap made. as I am 5'8" 160lbs. My 85' 325e was roomier. Therefore I like the size of my 95' M3. I have not seen the M2 live yet. But in your video or in picture it looks kinda stubby. She reminds me of a Short guy in steroid. Not too keen on the look..

Currently driving an F80 M3. M2 has its merits but I will stay with my current ride. From a looks perspective and in my opinion, the M4 beats the M2. However, if I needed a track weekend machine, I would prefer the M2. All depends on end use of the vehicle. I have no intention of tracking my M3. I can actually see a need to have both the M2 and M3. Did I just talk myself into another vehicle? My question to the group and MotoManTV: Do you send the M2 to Dinan?

+Nik Brudar CLA45 is MUCH better than the C450. The C450 is not a proper AMG where the CLA45 has a forged handmade engine, while the C450 has a mass produced tuned V6 with bits and pieces from the C63. 0-60 and 1/4 mile time is much quicker than the C450, and tuneability is much easier to get. It may have a 4 CYL but the CLA45 is much better fully loaded vs the C450 fully loaded for the price you're paying (I believe you pay 5k less for the CLA45)
@nikb65289 жыл бұрын
chaungo C450 is a MUCH nicer car once fully equipped, albeit the CLA45 is obviously faster. It boils down to what you need more: excessive comfort and space or a trifle more speed.
@darrenwong69059 жыл бұрын
+Nik Brudar Agreed. I just sold my CLA45 and ordered a C450. Very different cars... CLA45 is very sporty but has a bit of a cheap interior. The C450 has a much nicer interior and ride. Depends what you're looking for in a car. I would've went with a C63 if it has 4matic.

I drive an F83 M4. Loving the M2 package just like I used to lust over the 1M. When it's time to trade in the M4 I may look at the M2. Though one thing I like better about the M3/M4 is the wider range of exterior/interior colors and the fact that they will accommodate many individual colors. Early reports have been no individuals on the M2. I'm in Texas. Also to the person who asked about the additional temp control below the vents. It is to control to temp out of the vents specifically. I think it's genius myself.

Hi George....driving a Cadillac CTS V-sport in Nashville. Reading and watching the reviews on this car has been interesting to say the least. First, it's unlikely I'll ever drive one since I doubt I'll fit it in with my extra long legs. But it did remind me of the first time I ever drove a small BMW and that was the 318i circa about 1993. The engine needed be be revved up near redline to do anything but the lesson for me was the steering and driving dynamics. All of a sudden I understood why automotive journalists had been fawning over BMW since I starting reading their mags in high school. Fast forward to today. The M5 doesn't seem to impress people anymore. The M3/M4, which is supposed to be the spiritual leader of its segment just got it's butt handed to it in two different national reviews to the Mercedes C63S and the Cadillac ATS-V. In both reviews, the M3/M4 came in last and it wasn't that close. Journalists everywhere were honestly hand wringing and saying..."has BMW truly lost it"? and "And do they even care?" Well it seems like for this one car, they got the message. The 1M predecessor was nice but this car fixed many things about that car, namely the styling. You actually want to be seen this car versus making excuses for why you bought it. BMW finally seems to have mastered electric steering, something Cadillac figured out two years ago. It has the right amount of power...not too much, not too little. The interior looks like a BMW interior from 20 years ago, plus a tacked on screen. And finally BMW rediscovered their handling mojo after watching Mercedes and Cadillac literally rub their noses in BMW's old street cred. There will be nitpicks of course but none of that matters...BMW is back, baby! Which makes this vehicle special because, "get it now before it's gone". BMW has already told journalists that the 1/2 platform will move to the FWD platform BMW shares with Mini in the next interaction of this car, which means that it may be damn near impossible to duplicate this vehicle going forward. As it stands, there really isn't much direct competition because of that platform. Once they move to FWD/AWD, then you can talk about the Mercedes CLA or Audi A3/S3.

+MotoManTV: Thank you for the review! One thing I'm not sure about is the weight. Where did you get the weight figures from (-235 pounds from M4)? Because looking at the bmw.com webpage, equipped with DCT it will only be 17kg (37 pounds, total weight: 1595 kg) lighter than the M4 with DCT. And that would sound more realistic to me, as is uses basically the same suspension, transmission, wheels, brakes, is wider and has more cooling than the M235i and has no carbon fibre weight savings like driveshaft, roof, etc. by the way, could'n tell which one I would choose. I already drove the M4, and I really enjoyed it, savage performance, awesome looks. It was just lacking a little bit of feel though and felt quite big and distant from a drivers perspective. So I would probably take the M2 because it just looks so packed with the shorter wheelbase and the arches and wheels! Also think it might be just that tad more engaging. Also it is cheaper and I can easily get M4 power out of it with a little tune if the power wouldn't be enough.

Reason for taking the M3 is down to the exchange rate, with the $ getting stronger the value for money the M3 was the better option. I loved my 135i and was hoping the M235i would be a step up, in my view it wasn't. So now the M3, got to say, the car is great, bigger than M235i but more inline with the fun I had with the 135i.

I would choose this over an M4. Mostly it comes down to size and fun. The M2 from these early reviews seems to strike a good balance between chassis and engine that made the first M3 so special. I currently drive a 1990 M3 as a weekend car and a 2011 6sp manual RWD 328i Sport Wagon as my daily driver (1 of 429 such equipped e91's in the US). I live in Seattle. Thanks for posting these videos. I am scheduled for a special 2-day M Drivers School early next month and will be spending the two days in the M2, really looking forward to it! I would take the M2 without the sunroof and a set of Recaro Pole Position seats. And at some point down the line install a few of Dinan's goodies that are sure to follow.

do you think the engine sound of M2 is better than m3/4?

hi i'm from romania. i soult take the m2 manual. i really like it's looks, i think it also sound great and here in romania we have a loto of tight curvy roads shere a smaller car is more fun. i personally appreciate cars that are fun to drive, with usable power on the road and light. i personally dive a 2006 ford focus 1.6tdi, and i like it because is cheap to mantain and run and is entertaining to drive

hey Motoman Mario here from the Bx, i would definitely pick the m2 over the m4/m3, i love how performance bread this car is and put together by fanatical Germans to make this track beast much more than just a tuner car. Overall, this car is appealing to me mostly because i drive a Mk7 GTI and are somewhat complimentary to each other; i can't wait for what BMW tuners (like Dinan) have in store for this new addition to the M family.

would you choose the future alpine vision(whtevr renault ends up callin it and its coming to the US) or the m2...both cars are coming by the begining of 2017...if renault prices it right then the m2's in trouble

Nice video. If I had to choose today it would be the M3 but my reasoning is I currently have a 2016 M235i Xdrive because it's my daily driver and I live in the front range of Colorado. Need something that can handle the snow days and the M235i does an amazing job. So don't see the need in two 2 door cars, so I would have to go with the M3. Extra space would come in handy when I have a couple people to pick up. Plus I think I'll wait till the 2nd gen M2's come out.

So has the M2 got the same turbo / Manifold as the M235i?

Currently drive an old Cayman and love it. I'd probably go with the M2 because it's cheaper and you can get it with a manual. Money no object, the idea of having four doors on my sports car has always entertained me, so M3 would be lots of fun. That said, since I only drive on the road, I don't see any sense in paying for more power than I have now so I suspect the M235i is more my cup of tea were I to go the BMW route. If I were looking for a used 911 I'd cross shop the M2

Just ordered the M2. To me the M2 is just as special as the M4 with just a few less frills and more in line with how much I'm willing to pay. I live in the PNW.

@MotomanTV From NY, my father drives a 435GranCoupe. Between the M2 and M4, I would probably choose this. Totally agree with the welcomed "feminine side". How much more is this than the M235i? Is the "gap" too close regarding the 2 series range? The m4 seems like a very significant upgrade from the 435 since it's a totally different motor.

As mentioned on the other thread to this video I ordered the M235I and get it next month here in the UK as all allocation of the M2 was sold out ages ago so although it is clearly a better car what is the point of it when you cannot get one also 30 something more for Torque and BHP with a 10 grand premium not sure if that really adds up I may do some work and get close to this with my new car anyway..

Have owned a m235i since its release (dallas, tx). Love the m235i and was expecting the m2 to be louder but who knows it will probably sound better in person. The look definitely kills the m235i with the wider stance and more aggressive diffuser/front bumper. M3/m4 sound amazing even with the pumped interior sound. I personally would take the m2 over the M4/3 and am kicking myself why I didn't wait. :)

I have an E92 M3 (Coupe) and an E36 M3. I've also owned an E46 M3. I noticed the M3 has gotten bigger over the years. I'm a small guy and the smaller M2 is the way to go for me. Plus, why spend an additional $20k for the same specs as M4?

I drive a 428i, am considering either M2 or M4 next time I buy, probably 2-3 years. Right now I'm leaning towards the m4 just because I like the looks better. I don't track cars and even the 428 is enough to get me into WAY too much trouble on the public roads so in the end I might stay away just to keep my drivers license..... Live in the USA.

MotoMan fell in Love! I completely agree regarding the flared fenders & I couldn't have said it better my self! No one makes flared fenders like BMW, no one! What you look at dem fenders, what a masterpiece. The M2 is incredible machine, preforms the part, sounds the part & looks the part! You can't have that trifecta in many cars these days anymore… You picked one excellent spot to the do the shooting M! Loved the showcase CGIs, they were a nice touch. I'd definitely have the M2 over the M4 family … unless they build an M4 version of the Gran Coupe, then I might reconsider lol I'd have mine in Sakhir Orange, Merino Caramel Leather with Brown Honey Walnut veneer, Black Alcantara headliner & M Crossspoke 101 dubs … BMW individual to the rescue ;) As for the why, for some reason I never liked the M3 Coupe (now M4), I just can't get my self to like it. That slow-mo shot at the corkscrew is epic! What a car! Say M, now you rekindled your love for BMWs, I'm I clear to get one? ;) #ItWasAGoodADay

I thought you would help us decide which car is best over all and why. Seems to me the M2 is more of a second car to have fun with in the summer. the M3/M4 is more like a primary car in warm states. however would M3/M4 be better dor a second car just because one gets more. I drive a VW touareg Hybrid, which I have to say don't get fooled by the "Hybrid" name cause it's as fast as my old WRX but now I don't get stuck in MN snow.

Okay I might be biased since I am a BMW fan, even that I certainly do not like everything they do. But this M2 looks extremely right in my eyes. Interior is a bit dull but I do love the exterior - feels like the sum of the latest of the best BWM cars compressed into a playful size.

I currently have a 135i (my second BMW) and love it, but as it's a 2009 I've started thinking about a new car. I've considered lots of models trying to figure out what's next (truck, jeep, cayman, Tesla, 4 series), but I keep coming back to a newer version of my 135i. The car is bat sh*t fun to drive and anything less would be a disappointment. I am eagerly waiting for the M2 to go on sale...

I drive a f30 335i in Austin, Tx and i haven't driving a 2 series or an m4, i can't decided which car i would choose. I think the m2 because of balance, I feel safer with a lower hp than the m4! Really enjoy hill and mountain drives at good speeds, but always trying to be as safe as possible thats why i think the m2 would fit my needs in driving aspects! I really enjoy the luxury of the m4 though and would love to see a regular 440m i with same hp as the m2 and all the beautiful leathers and features that come with the m4.

Nice review mate! I drive a BMW Z4 E89, with the beefy engine of course. So I like the small cars too. I'll probably choose the M2 over the M4 any time. Becouse its smaler, lighter and cheaper. And living @ the swiss alps it also makes more sense having that shorter wheelbase. If your a Autobahn guy on the other hand, the M4 probalby is the right choice.

Notice the twisted driver's seat? For cost-cutting reasons, the seat is not perpendicular to the steering wheel. It is set a few degrees pointed to the left. It is noticeable. This alone is a show-stopper for me.

Good review! I think I would choose the m2 over the m3/m4. I like that compact body style more and m2, atleast for me, looks more like an enthusiast's car than m3/m4. I live in Europe, Estonia. Currently I drive Toyota Gt86.
