i recently purchased a 2018 breakout 114 and love it. and ive barely cracked into her capabilities. can only imagine what this bike is capable of. it is super comfortable to ride. i forsee it being just fine in its stock form for long rides. anxiously awaiting spring to arrive with the warmer weather.

I love the Breakout. I came close to buying one but decided to keep my 2014 Fat Bob. After I have owned my Fat Bob for a couple of years, It's my favorite bike. I love the new remade 2018 Fat Bob. Harley really made a winner. After much thought, I have decide to keep my Fat Bob for a very long time. Great review on the Breakout and I loved the review on the Fat Bob. You always do a great job in reviewing Harleys. Take care my friend. Also, my best friend is from your area of the world.

Just want to say I ride a 2017 Breakout. I cannot comment on the frame or engine improvements in the 2018 but I can say I chose the 2017 because it is a far better looking bike. The Turbine wheels and the big gas tank. The bike was never designed to race through mountain curves but was designed for appearance and the "bad ass" feel you get riding it and the 2017 Breakout provides that in spades. You mention that the 2016 leaned to the left?? I haven't heard that before and confirm the 217 certainly doesn't. I am interested in checking out the new frame though :-)

I have the 18 & your wheels will fit on my bike & the smaller tank is also lighter. In short,I wouldn't trade my 18 for a 17 for nothing in this world. My stage 3 117 pulls like a freight train & looks amazing doing it too.

I tried Fat Bob. Unfortunately I'm too big ( tall ) for the bike. I was very disappointed it didn't fit. My arms & legs are too long... Seems bike is for those 6'2" or less. As much as I liked the bike, it's not a good fit. Several people said I looked ridiculous on the bike... I'm not into the touring bikes. While I love the breakout I'll only be able to use it for an around town bike. Guess road bikes aren't for me. Thanks everyone for you time, advice & suggestions; truly appreciate it. I'm still debating if I'll get a breakout... Happy Holidays to everyone...

My dealer didn't have a 114. I did ride a 107. Loved everything about it except the smaller fuel tank. I think HD has received a lot of negative feedback on this. I am thinking about holding off on the purchase in hopes that they will change this and go back to the 5 gallon tank in the next model year. it may be something I can live with as it should be enough fuel for a couple hours of riding and I'll likely want to get off the bike and walk around a bit after 100 to 120 miles anyway. Maybe it's HD's way of separating the cruiser's from the touring bikes, but two of the cruisers, Fat Boy and Low Rider, retained the 5 gallon tank.
@MakoVette
@MakoVette 7 жыл бұрын
Nailed it exactly, the small tank is a mistake and a show stopper for me and many of my friends. Compromising range for looks is the wrong thing to do. If guys want a Frisco style tank, they can do that themselves, stock it should come with the larger tank.

@MakoVette

@CreedX360 It's nice looking but impractical for a Big Twin that's going to be used for long rides. If all you're riding are short urban runs, then yeah, the small tank is okay, but I'll wager that most Big Twin riders like to lay down the miles more often than not. A Frisco'd tank setup looks cool as hell but it's a huge pain to stop every couple of hours to gas up. Adding fuel stop planning to your itinerary used to be restricted to the realm of Sportsters. Try the Vegas to Las Cruces via Albuquerque run and let us know how that small tank works out for you in the middle of desert where there's 0 gas available :)
@joeglenn7323
@joeglenn7323 7 жыл бұрын
I agree that it looks good, but a 5 gallon tank would look good too. What I didn't want was to be "that guy" on a group ride that had to be the first one that needed fuel while the rest of the group would still have almost half of a tank. I went with a 2016 Fat Bob with under 500 miles on the odometer for about 40% of the cost of a 2018. AND I won't be "that guy".

@Joe Glenn I (reluctantly) traded in my 2009 Fat Bob for my Low Rider S. Wish I had the wallet to have kept it and still have been able to afford the Low Rider, but such is life :) the 'bob is an epic ride, you have chosen well.

Excellent review... This will be my very first road bike. I've rode mx bikes, but never a road bike before. I love the simplistic & minimalist look of this bike. Is this a good choice for first road bike? I fell in love with this bike when I walked into the HD showroom and saw 2018 Breakout Black ( it was first bike closest to the door ). I was intimidated at first. It seemed so big & too heavy compared to MX bikes. But after sitting on it for awhile, off & on for ~ 2 to 3 hrs, ( I was in showroom for 6hrs straight hrs 1st day & visited HD couple more days where I sat on it some more & felt more comfortable with weight ). Although they allow test drives I don't have a motorcycle license. They mentioned there's school I can go to on weekends to get on bike training & also pass written test and get license / certified. Majority of my rides will be less than 125 miles. However, I could see myself occasionally wanting to go 200 and rarely 300 or 400 miles one way? Sales people tried to convince me to buy 2018 CVO Road Glide because they said eventually it'd be a lot better because of all the additional features; however, although I could purchase the CVO, I like the simplistic & minimalist look of this bike... If necessary as I become better & more familiar with road bikes / breakout, I could purchase CVO Road Glide later, in addition to the breakout, if I really get into long distance riding. Is this bike ok for riding twisting roads in mountains? Would wind resistance against my body be an issue at 65 to 70 mph? Any thoughts & suggestions would be appreciated. I plan to get black version. There's 107, 114 & 117, which engine should beginner start with? I saw somewhere that tank on this is smaller 3.5g vs 5g. Again I love streamline look of this bike; however, some mentioned range is much more limited between refueling, 164 to empty ( 47 * 3.5 ) but should refuel at 1/4 before empty ~123 miles. Is that a problem? Some said it would / could be in group ride where other riders have 5g tanks and could go ~50 more additional miles before refueling. Thanks in advance for sharing..."

Hello there. Would you do a review of the 2018 softail slim? I am thinking of buying one, the black denim, I am 6.2 tall, but I like to know what you think first as I haven’t been on a bike for the last 21 years (based on fear of accident as I had two in the past) thank you very much in advance. The bikes a missile,I'm sure it was part of the weight savings program. They don't brag about weight savings on any other soft tail model. But I bet it does help push those other models to people who can't stand all the attention the bike gets at it's numerous gas station visits.😉

Nice. Love your videos! I am slightly confused about the way you talk about counter-steering, as if it’s something bad or something you only have to use sometimes. It took me a few years to really understand that counter-steering is simply how you steer a moving motorbike (it’s physically impossible not to), in every corner, whether you’re conscious of it or not. But maybe you mean something else or something more specific?
@jcmcmxci
@jcmcmxci 7 жыл бұрын
Kendoji1 also curious about this, counter steering at a roundabout makes it so much easier and controllable, and at any corner for that matter
@MrStephen205
@MrStephen205 7 жыл бұрын
Kendoji1 He means that the previous model breakout had off set wheels. So meant to ride it you had to kinda counter steer to counter the effects of that. Even when going in a straight line. (Im not a rider!) Just going by previous model reviews. I think im right in saying this... anyone please correct me if im wrong.

Don't you mean "counter steer" in stead of "counter balance"? Shame the tank has been reduced in size so the range will be reduced from about 220 miles to less than 150 miles. This is probably the where most of the weight saving has come from. Good that the side stand has been changed and made longer, much less effort needed to get it upright. I rode a new 2018 M8 Softail Heritage recently and could help noticing the irritating wine the new M8 engine produces. What is that all about?

Sorry, the 2017 and prior Breakouts are definitely more appealing.... Harley really screwed up that gas tank by downgrading from a 5 gallon tank to a 3.5 gallon tank. That gas tank alone gives the new 2018 Breakout a more of an anorexic look VS the prior 5 gallon tank. Also the loss of the round analog gauge is another sad thing. And the frame going from the original Softail to this new one may ride better but does not look nicer.... I mean if I wanted to do that I would go buy a Honda or Suzuki or Yamaha Harley style bike and pay a lot less. The Japanese bikes are known for extremely smooth rides and extremely solid mechanics. Harley had a uniqueness in this field that is now going by the wayside.. Not to mention they combined the few Dyna models they have into the Softail family now. This is a sign of money problems at the company. They are consolidating their manufacturing by producing less unique items and having less frames to deal with so they can mass produce one type of frame versus two for cost savings thereby making Harleys less unique. Harleys are officially starting to lose that classic Harley look to them. Not a great path to travel IMHO. Too bad they couldn't improve on the prior set up. No, instead they went down a path that Japanese bike makers go down. Except Harley's don't really get cheaper. So you're paying more money for Less Harley uniqueness. Thumbs down in my book
