If there is one guy in Florida that really knows VW engines it is Darrin. He knows more about these engines than most. I would follow his advice over anyone else. If Darrin says a combo will not work-he knows from experience. You get what you pay for. Excellent honest guy. God bless Darrin. Dp.

Much respect for not calling out anyone. Although we need to start being informed of these dirty establishments so it's not a domino effect of customers getting burned. VW community has alot of shady people passing off crappy work because it's a dying breed of builders, people retiring. I ran into a few back back in the day. They don't understand that they are the ones losing because eventually it's their own business that's going to suffer. Piece it together D, much respect to everyone here who takes the DubLife serious

that is why i drove to darin's place met him , a lot of vw builders call themselves mechanics with years and years of experience making mistakes one after another this was a new hobby for me in 2007 having built other motors then vw's air cooled i understand what needs to be done and how to do it , that is why we change after so many surprises that should not have hapened did happen we learn the hard way again and again but at 68 years of age it gets old real fast you can talk to this man and if you had any kind of training whats so ever in engine building reading mics etc etc etc ,,,,,this is the guy you want ,,,,,,thanks god bless everyone have fun ,,,,in oct 17 / 21 ,,,,

I'm amazed how the "bigger is better" philosophy is often applied with cams. I run a W100 on the street and it's all I need for low to midrange power while making the "right" sounds at idle.
@836dmar3 жыл бұрын
It’s the magazines and armchair racers. Been that way since the 40s. A well thought out combination and a focus on reliability and efficiency will almost always make for a better performing engine. All out drag racing is different but mild street mods can be quite surprising without skipping reliability mods.

Regarding the oil cooler seals,..where they wrong? squished too tightly? engine got too hot and the seals failed and got out of shape? I know in the engine gasket sets there are several for different oil coolers/motors... 40hp, 1500/1600,..type 3..etc. Thanks for the video, look forward to the rest of the teardown and reveal.

I'm going through the same thing now. Spent $$ for a shop to build me a NEW (All new parts) 1915. Its been finished 4 different times now. Its been trailered back to the shop 4 times. I finally collected my car in running OK condition but still not correct...I took it elsewhere, where, it is being gone through as we speak. PS: This shop sells this same engine on E-Bay out of AZ.

But I put one together last summer for a friend that he provided the parts (mismatched Chinese junk). His engine, so we put it together. And...15 seconds in and it seized. @elpuerco60593 жыл бұрын
Really want to see how you add the extra cooling on the Type 3! On my 2.0L I have dropped my compression to 7.9 on a C-20 cam. Running stock Berg heads w/semi-hemi and SVDA distro/Weber 34- 52/135/200. Oil temps stay in the high 190 - 210. Running about 45 deg Total Advance. I've played with less advance but it runs coolest at this setting. Love this cam for daily driving around and staying below 5000 rpm. But I can't seem to seal a case up properly to save my life 😒 and the CB Racing Pushrod Tube seals suck (or is it leak) a lot!
@doughall5563 жыл бұрын
You sure your at 45 degree advanced?? 🤔 I sure you can't run with anything over 32 degree. On your cb push rod tubes make sure you adjust the spring pressure...if you can see it mashing or any deviation in the silicone seals you will have oil leaks. I had same problem on my 2110 build. Loosened up the spring pressure and now no leaks👍. If you have same tubes mine have snap rings with a choice of which slot to use creates more or less spring pressure

Hi Darren all the way from New Zealand, do you have any info on type 3 full auto transmissions ? For health reasons Im having to give up riding 2 wheels and Im building a trike. My left leg is going to prevent me using a clutch and I have never liked the idea of taking a hand off the bars to change gears... so an auto just makes sense. I have a type 3 003 IRS trans and apart from knowing they are f%^king heavy I really can't find much info. Im building a mild 1776 using as21 cases with 100 cam twin port heads moly crank using all new internal only the cases are preloved. Thanks for any info.

I don't know anything about compression. Something I need to learn about. I don't have a fancy engine, They have always been basically stock. The one in my current bus is a 1641, I think, It has CB O44 Heads, but what should my compression be? I would love to build my own engine, but seems intimidating, with so much technical issues. Maybe with Darrin's help I could do it. I feel I could do a better job than who ever built this engine!!!!!

Those plugs being sunken in like that are the perfect recipe for preignition and then detonation. He needs to take the people who built those motors to small claims court. If they aren't taught a lesson they will just keep doing this to other people.

Hey Darrin, did you check the timing before stripping it? I know this engine has a lot of other issues. However, we keep seeing customers who take away turnkey engines which are bench ran & tuned. The customers always claim they kmow what they're doing to install the engine. Then when we see it at its 1st 150km sevice check we find they've mucked with the timing and we've even seen recently a customer engine set 8deg retarded and no working oil light - things that instantly void thier warranty.

You know Darrin, the laundry list of shenanigans done to this engine….coupled with the worst idea ever ( the freeway flyer). It’s a wonder it lasted 800 miles. I’m currently running a “bap geon “ …..like autozone…. Short block that came from my brothers…..correct…fuel injected 1969 type 3. When he gave it to me less the type 3 heads. It had over 150,000 miles on it. Now granted B.R. Drives like a grandma, and changes the Mobile 1 every 3000 miles. It doesn’t smoke, or knock….I bolted my singe port heads, and intake etc for my 67 beetle…and I drive the car all over the place. It still runs good. End play? Yup….leaks a little? Yup..but still a good engine. So… People have this idea, that gee….I’m going to make a cake. But, I’m not going to follow the recipe…..gee that tastes terrible! “I wonder if it was the half cup of powdered alum I put in it”. If, you follow the book, and use the original spec. Correct parts. And don’t have wacky driving habits, run the car in the desert, pull a trailer or decided the car needed racing slicks….that sort of thing. Your engine and your car will last a long time.

These motors are fairly simple and straightforward but you can’t just slap them together. You need to plan them and put them together right and methodically with the right parts, etc. If you do so you get something reliable for street use. Going by what we’ve seen in the top end you are 100% right in splitting the case.
