Nice little challenge for today. This Cast Iron motor grader gearbox needed some attention. Follow along as it goes from a big paper weight to a fully functioning part once again.

Probably cast steel vs cast iron since it welded up so nicely and didn't immediately crack after welding. Very creative solution. Your "I don't know if this is going to work, but I'll give it a shot" attitude + ingenuity = pretty awesome result." My hat's off to you Isaac.

An alternative and good method I found is to tack together and butter the iron surfaces with nickel. Once the iron is covered weld it out the rest of the way with mild steel. Works especially good in grooves and where steel repair parts are used. Or when you are running low on expensive nickel filler wire. Anyway in my experience what you are doing here should work well especially since you took the time to insure the parts are all on the same plane so when it's tightened down it will not pull too much on one side or the other. It also appeared that the nickel flowed in nice on the first try, that does not always happen. Great repair in my book. Cheers.

Used to use 3.2 mil rods verticle up root and 2.4 mil rods to cap, but then i just ended up mostly running flux cored Hobart fab shield... On just about everything when i was a craftsman in the military we used Utaloy Oxy flame welding and on shafts we used Rototek. But that was over 22 years ago...

How weird is that? Haven't seen much about motor graders and no sooner do I finish watching Kurtis at "Cutting Edge Engineering" weld up a ring gear from a motor grader, I come here and Isaac is welding up a part for a motor grader. I'm beginning to think that you might be the same person. Come to think of it, I don't think that I have ever seen the two of you in the same room at the same time. The plot thickens.

This turned out amazing! These type of rods are so bright its hard to see what your doing. The puddle looks like a bright dancing flame instead of a clearly defined puddle. Hey what kind of slag removing tool is that? That is very handy! Thanks for sharing!

Can you tell us Issac what the feedback was like from your customer please? Anything less than excellent work, then he / she must be an obsessive compulsive liar…he he, that’s one job that looks way past the 10/10, heck if it was blasted and painted it could have been sent back to the manufacturer for new *cough* unused stock. You realise how high you have set the height of the bar for any future work to be compared to. Ty for this wonderful video, hope you and your family have a wonderful Independence Day , you more than deserve it. Phil. In 🇬🇧

Watching you problem solve first, then begin the repair work, both keeps my engineering mind alert and and eager to see just how you set about making your ideas work.. As I am normally a noisy person you keep me quiet and happy to see your work through to the finished product, and happy to see a craftsman of his trade - Thank you for the video-- Ian - UK.

he could tell by first look.. it was going to weld. that is some years right there. when you have to degrade the appearance to blend in is just another skill.. whoever gets that piece won't have to worry is my guess. higher grade than wrought iron, not dense enough for forged or steel.

Not a professional welder. I went to a class back in early 1990's. A person designed a weld rod that could weld to different metals together. I.e. mild steel to stainless steel. Cast iron to stainless steel. Don't know if it went into progress. But, you do great work

I am a cat tech those bull gear drive housing break all the time they suck I dought that one will last longer than a factory part that being said its a good repair but its likely the the housing will snap in half right down the middle they are under built and under designed from factory that part is Under immense pressure Especially when the equipment is trying to turn

When you get it all welded solid with the stick try throwing a very hot cap with the wire feed you will absolutely love how it lays down like a machine that spreads the dime's. FYI I love a stick welder and suck at wire but I have them all and made water treatment plants for a living

When teaching verticle up to someone learning, to get them going and to give them a sense of confidence, i would say. Turn the weld settings up to the maximum of the rods current. Then strike the rod directly and turn smashing the rod with a short stab, stab and twist, usually trying to get the flux to be the first point of contact. Hold the rod for about 3 seconds centered then moving slightly left to right. Then stop wait a second the repeat and you get great penetration and a bead pattern up the job. This Cast welding rod looks like a good candidate for that method. I call it the 3 second burn and hold....
