I can remember a fire dept truck that had a large V8 International engine with no thermostat, but it had thermostatically controlled shutters in front of the radiator. It also had duel Delco Remy distributors using a total of 16 spark plugs. The shutter system worked great! Never saw that system have problems. Today's t'stat have to keep engine temps just right for that engine to operate efficiently. I found replacing the coolant every 2 years helps to keep the cooling system clean and eliminates problems. Good Video Pete.

Great video Pete. That test you performed will be a good test to use for P0128. By the way it looked like you were starting to overheat, maybe your thermostat is stuck 😂.

Hello, Sir. Could you please explain why an increase in temperature on start up is caused by an open thermostat? I would think that if the thermostat were open, the temperature would take longer to rise.

I'm referring to the comparison between the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) reading and the actual reading at the inlet to the radiator. When cold, the thermostat is closed to allow the engine to warm up quickly. With no flow going to the radiator, the temperature at the inlet should remain low. If you see both temperature readings rising at the same time on initial start up, it's an indication that the thermostat is open when it shouldn't be. Make sense?
