Today we are removing the alternator on this 3.6 engine. In the video I remove the lower bracket up its optional. I mainly wanted to show how the bracket mounts to the alternator and was limited on room to film while on the vehicle.

Thank YOU! I’m currently changing my alternator on my 2020 jeep gladiator. Normally I would just call my dad with questions. He passed not too long ago so I’ve turned to KZbin. Because I’m stubborn and like working on my jeep on my own. I have watched OVER A DOZEN videos! YOURS is hands down the best one. So thank you for being a stand in dad for me on this project. My next project is transfer case seal haha 😅

I have to say I’m impressed with your production work - camera, sound, editing and especially lighting. I worked in broadcasting for over 30 years. I’ve set up shoots, produced video commercials, trailers and promos. Your work is impeccable it shows that you care about how you portray your message and yourself. Did a graphics house produce the logo for you or did you create that? I have to say during my day I was spoiled. My job was to view and write. The go into an edit room with professional editors and audio engineers and put together the magic. Today, you have to do everything yourself. Just wanted to say great work keep it up.

@@georan4323 Many thanks man. It means alot coming from someone with your back ground. It is a labor of love......it has to be because it doesnt pay that great. But as long as people are learning from the videos......I am happy. Sometimes I wish I would just film and not worry about the small details. A 30 minute repair takes me about 3 hours to film it feels like lol. But again....I wouldnt be happy if I did that way. I had someone on Fiverr do the "grinding" intro and the actual logo was done at 48hourlogo. Thanks again!

Is it really necessary to remove the triangular bracket? I think you can just remove the two long screws holding the alternator to the engine and the two short screws holding the alternator to the triangular bracket. Thus leaving said bracket in place.

There's always something more difficult than the video shows. On my Jeep, that breaker bar part with the pulley does not want to move. I'm literally standing on the breaker bar and it's barely budging. But was finally able to get it to move but had to put a lot of strength and effort on the breaker bar while my wife moved the belt off and on for me.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
It takes some effort for sure because of that shock they added to the belt tensioner set up. That’s the main reason I have some long breaker bars

You can replace the belt with out removing the alternator. It does require removal of the lower alternator bracket however. That will get you the needed room to work it around the pulley on the alternator. Thanks for that question!

I believe my ALTERNATOR just went on my 2014 Unlimited Sahara with only 45 Thousand Miles, Started the jeep up went and got coffee came back out put key in ignition and NOTHING! No lights, No power, wont crank....We even got a new fully charged battery try jumping it and NOTHING! With new battery plugged in everything turned on, but NO cranking. Cant wait to get ride of this 2014 Wrangler Unlimited....FIRST AND last Wrangler, was thinking of trading it in for the new Jeep Pick up.....Nope.....Going Tacoma now!

Thank you, David, your breakdown was right on. Until I watched your video I thought I was going to have to remove the alternator just to replace the belt. The previous four videos I watched on removing the belt never mentioned the triangular bracket under the alternator. Go figure. Even with the two-foot breaker-bar, this old man [70], needed a three-foot cheater pipe on the breaker-bar to push that hydraulic assembly down, loosening the belt to get it back on.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
Glad it all worked out in the end.....its all about leverage and actually about going slow to aid in getting that odd tensioner to release enough to remove the belt. Odd set up for sure from the tensioner to the backwards alternator. Thanks Ben for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe!

MotorCity Mechanic I went ahead and got started tonight. I did have to remove the coolant reservoir to get ample room to compress that shock with the breaker bar. Also the middle bolt on my bracket was a 16mm. While I was in there I found a hairline crack in my thermostat 😠 so back to the auto parts shop for a replacement before I put the new alternator in. Thanks again for the awesome video!

Helped all the way through question though. The top screws of mounting bracket won’t quite get in to the alternator however the bottom 2 screws got in and the alternator is sitting on tightened top screws. Is that ok or will I need another alternator? Edit: after probably 100 watches still put mount on wrong 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️. One quick review to correct once again great video.

Time is money...while you're doing all that work, go ahead and replace both of the idler pulleys and the pulley on the tensioner, and the serpentine belt :-)...$100 of parts just saved the labor of doing it all again when those go bad and also kept you from breaking down in the middle of the places your Jeep is supposed to go ;-)

What length is the breaker bar you are using in the video? I got all the way to the breaker bar portion and my bar handle getting blocked by the clamp to the bottom right of the alternator and the windshield washer fluid container when I press down. The bar hits the crimp/clamp and go down, I can remove the clamp but really dont want to do that if not necessary

I still bleed mopar but there are a few cars that I dont believe deserve the name Jeep or Dodge on the front hood. When you have a bigger brother they always try to squeeze some of their cars into the american market. Daimler was the same way with vehicles such as the Sprinter and Crossfire. It comes with the job I guess. Thanks for checking out multiple videos of mine and for the great feedback.

I have a 2012 JKU 3.6L looking to add an upgraded alternator. What size alt do you recommend for a 1800 rms car audio amplifier?

Sorry that I can’t be of much help. I deal only with stock set ups and not sure what’s out there as far as upgrades. I just know I don’t like aftermarket parts....they don’t seem to last and some don’t work out of the box.

Really appreciate this video man. Great learning experience. My question is why does it look so new but need a new alternator? I have a 2012 jk that I just got done wheeling and it's having some sort of whining noise around the belt area while accelerating. Gonna do a proper diagnosis tomorrow. Was this one whining as well?

Actually this one was removed just for the video. Sometimes I grab a vehicle and do a repair video on what ever I find to be common or that someone asks for. There was no actual issue......just used for filming. There is a chance you need an alternator. First diag the noise and see if you can narrow it down. If you went thru any water or mud that was deep enough to get up to the alternator then there is a good chance it may have damaged it. Thanks for the question and make sure to wubscribe

@@MotorCityMechanic As it turned out I pulled the water pump for nothing. It was diagnosed as being the oil cooler housing that was leaking, spraying toward the firewall from directly over the motor, right in the center. All good now.

Hey man! Awesome video I followed every step of this video to change my alternator just now. Everything was smooth until I got in there to crank it up.. there was nothing! Dash lights and interior lights turn on but it won’t crank. What do you suggest me checking? Did I do something wrong?

Nothing is coming to mind. I can only recommend double checking everything such as the battery connection.

I left my job as a dealer tech like 10 years ago- cordless tools were nothing like today! Have those Milwaukee tools worked well for you? I'll be looking to get a cordless impact to do tire rotations and such sooner or later now that I have a place to tinker again.

Hey Mike....I feel like I was one of the last mechanics to make that change. I always had a cordless drill of some sort but nothing strong enough to not stop using air. Then I decided to step it up a notch and started with the 3/8 ratchet and the impact as well. I was lucky enough to have Milwaukee send me their newest 1/2 drive 600ft/lb impact. I have to say I am impressed. I have been challenging myself when doing engine and trans work to only use hand tools and my Milwaukee cordless tools. That impact has taken balancer bolts, lug nuts, and axle nuts off with no issues. Its alot cheaper then the closest Snap On version. When it comes to items like the cordless ratchet.....I never expect it to take off super tight bolts, I knew that going into it already which I understand. It will break bolts loose for sure but remember its not a 18volt ratchet. I can say that I havent had to use my air impacts for weeks now and with all the water we have in the line in the summers.....I am not missing it. So if you have the chance to stop by your local Home Depot......check out the Milwaukee line of cordless tools that they carry. Otherwise you can get them on Amazon as well. So no need in a large air compressor and plus you can take them anywhere to do any job you need done. Thanks again Mike for the question.
