David Pike is the best! Broke the oil dipstick top on my Dodge Charger R/T. Drilled the hole. Found the right screw to insert. Very important! Tried several before I found one that was coarse enough. Position of the dipstick tube did not allow me to use side dikes. Had to use a hammer claw with a screwdriver to brace. The key was heating up tube. Failed several times to do it without the heat. Didn't have a torch so, I used a butane lighter with a long, flexible neck. I could bend it 90° and get it near the tube without having to remove the tube or touch anything else around the engine. Once heated the plastic broke free and came right out. Success! Better stil, saved myself $300 having a mechanic do the work! Thanks, again, David!!

The one on my Charger broke twice. I took a 1/4" hitch pin that has a rubber coated pull ring on it and cut it off. I split the end, drilled a hole for the pin on the dipstick and pressed the pin through the hole on hitch pin. This pull ring on my dipstick now will never break again.

Happened this weekend with my 2001 PT Cruiser (as in your video) when I was changing the timing belt (that job *sucked*, BTW) and was lowering the engine when it slipped off the jack - yikes! I just drilled a little hole until I felt the drill bit impact the metal dipstick, carefully turned in a drywall screw until I felt it bite, then carefully pulled out the stump (you only get one chance at this). Unfortunately, for the life of me, I don't know where the handle went - I looked for it everywhere!
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
Things like that happen for sure. Its not the easiest timing belt....but I have come across harder. Once you do a few you get use to is and your speed increase and then it becomes a good money making job.

Everyone with a plastic dipstick handle should do themselves a favor and replace the plastic handle with a metal one. I found a metal replacement from a custom parts manufacturer called Billet. Expensive (for 2006 Dodge Charger, appx. $25), but to prevent this ridiculous nightmare issue from happening again, it's well worth it. [Here's a link to the part, from a re-seller: www.uprproducts.com/dodge-chrysler-billet-oil-dip-stick.html ]. I wish we could mount a class action lawsuit against all these car makers who have designed oil dipsticks to sit inside the tube, with an O-ring on a plastic handle... which will then inevitably put the car owners through hell trying to fix an absolutely avoidable problem! Probably tens of thousands of people are dealing with this issue, with countless human hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted because of this stupidity! My local Dodge dealership/repair shop quoted me $100 ++ to get this damn broken part out, plus the cost of a new dipstick. Instead I tried to tackle it myself. I've spent many, many hours researching and then trying techniques, but it is stuck tight, even though the O-ring has been dug out already & I've got a screw well secured into the remaining plastic; plus I've heated it with a hair dryer, and I've added 3 rounds of penetrating oil, hoping it would seep in around the edges. Still no go. Is this a conspiracy between car makers, parts mfr's & the dealerships, to bump up their future revenues by building in a breakable and hard-to-replace part, in the most-often performed under the hood maintenance procedure???! I'm very suspicious. Older cars do not suffer from this fatal flaw. I'm 65 and I've never even heard of this problem... until I got this car! Makes me want to get rid of it for this reason alone. Someone wrote in another forum, 'Whoever designed these type of dipsticks and tubes should have their asses kicked!" I couldn't agree more.

I have a 2002 Nissan Sentra with this problem, the only thing is everytime i try to drill to put a crew in it it pushed down. I've used the compressed air trick to get it to about 1 inch from the top, do you think I could heat it and let the screw "melt" into the soft plastic enough to pull it? There is no retaining bolt holding the dip stick tube into the block so I guess pulling hard enough would remove the tube but is it safe enough to heat the tube while still attached? wouldn't want to catch any oil on fire and dropping the oil looks to be a pain, thanks for any input, and great videos keep them up!

Thats another method for sure. One thing is that easy outs work well for metal but on plastic being that they tapper to get that tight grip....they can make the plastic mushroom as well and make it even harder to remove. But still another method worth trying. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe.

Tried this and it pushed it further down. Tried to be slow and easy. But down it went further in the tube

If you heat it up, it will expand the plastic...don't need to heat

What if the plastic broke but in trying to remove it, it went further in? It's down there about 6-8 inches or more. On a 2003 nissan sentra.

When you cant get to it.....you will need to try and remove the oil dipstick tube. In worse cases you might have to remove the oil pan and push the dipstick up and out the tube. Just depends on which is easier to get to.

hi just wanted to ask you a quick question. i had the same thing happen to me on my jeep commander. i tried to get a dipstick from the auto parts stores and they all say they don't carry the one i need so i ordered both the dipstick and tube from the dealer. my question is do i need to drop the oil pan on my 5.7 hemi engine replace the tube.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
You should have to drop the pan.....unless that tube is stuck or seized into the oil pan. Dropping the pan wont help too much because you cant get the lower side of the tube to knock it thru.

2010 Chrysler 300 in Pristine shape EXCEPT: Thanks to the dummies at the oil change place the oil dip stick was shoved in so deep it was impossible to remove. (I found this out later. Of course, these people did not own up to ruining my car) Top broken off. The top they must have thrown away. Hide the evidence! I tried this screw trick and it would not budge. I even added some oil around dip stick, still no movement. I heated the tube with a lighter and still no movement. Really hate that I paid a fortune to have my oil changed so these dummies could ruin my car. Now it will cost $300-$400 to have a mechanic fix it. Any other thoughts on how to get this out? I really do not have money for this. Thanks to the rotten economy. Any help would be appreciated. I am not a mechanic, but I am handy and a DIYer.

My dumbass tried pouring some super glue and gluing the top of a small nail to it. After it just broke off I cant seem to be able to pry it out with the screw. Gonna have to take out the entire tube first now. Does one have to drain the oil when removing the dipstick tube?

too much work....if you got an air compressor just disconnect the breather tube at the valve cover and use an air gun and give it a couple of squirts...it will pop up the dipstick like a periscope...done twice on a 2006 Nissan Sentra

JB that will work as long as the dipstick is the weakest link....I have seen techs blow seals out doing that....making seals invert like the rear main seal and made them even more work. For that reason I try not to do that. Thanks for the comment and don’t forget to subscribe
