Many, many thanks for the video. Mistakenly, I assumed there was an internal compression spring and have been struggling to refit the tensioner unit. You're never to old to learn. 👍

Thanks a lot! Really helpful 👍 I got new ones with a little thing to keep it retracted and when I took it out the tensioner understandably went full out. Couldn't figure it out without your video. Gonna change them tomorrow on my Vulcan

I bought your guy's manual to do a valve adjustment in an 07 yz450f and I had this very question! I could not find an answer anywhere and I almost called you guys so thank you! So your saying during removal just remove the two bolts and during installation lock back the plunger or hold it back and install it an then release the plunger?

Found my cam chain to be a little loose but tensioner was sprung out but had to turn it manually a little further to tighten the chain. Is this a sign of bad tensioner?

Hi. Good video I have a question, while ur manually adjusting the shaft with the small screwdriver it should lock on every turn or only reaching the end? Because mine only locks at the maximum adjustment but if I release it before reaching the top it will undo all the turns and end up completely released. Is that normal ? Or is bad ? Tensioner of a vstar1100

I had a sloppy cam chain on a gz250 i bought. The motor stalled and the top of the piston hit a valve and broke the sprocket on the cam. It definitely could have been worse.

My 09 kx450f grenaded all cause of a oem tensioner after a new rebuild that had maybe 10 hrs on it and I’m ocd about rebuilding so I know for sure everything is done right so I don’t have to worry about it being unreliable after all that money.. a brand new oem tensioner failed jumped 3 teeth and threw the valve into the piston shattered the buckets and threw shards into the head destroyed guides chain retainers cams n all. Never used anything but manual since then 😅🤦🏻‍♂️

Oh that's terrible, the worst failures I have seen are on factory Kawasaki tensioners. Hate that happened!

Do u have to make sure the engine is at tdc before you take it out and reset it buddy
@Cyclepedia
@Cyclepedia 9 ай бұрын
In most cases no, but I can't say for sure on all engines. You definitely don't want to turn the engine over with the tensioner removed though.

No it doesn’t have to be at Tex but it doesn’t hurt to do it. Everyone does it alittle different so check in the book if you still have it

Can we build up a little metal on the tip of the tensioner just to add more tension when engines is noisy?
@Cyclepedia
@Cyclepedia 3 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is your forcing the engine past its limits and if its noisy then something or things are worn and need attention. If you keep pushing it then something is really gonna go bad.

Can it be reset by just winding the plunger and then releasing it while still bolted to the bike ? My timing chain was pretty loud and noisy so I took the tensioner out checked it wound it in and put it back on with the same gasket just to see if it worked and it did but was leaking oil so I took it back out fitted new gasket put it back in but this time it’s still making the noise but I don’t see how retracting the plunger then releasing it while still in the bike is any different to taking it off then retracting it then putting it back on and releasing it

I have the same issue .. first time when I installed it noise was gone . When I tried to reinstall it again because there was a leak it's noisy !!! How did you fix this ?
@motomc6962
@motomc6962 3 жыл бұрын
@@chriscs9080 manual tensioner mate, way better than these shite automatic ones. Basically same but just it’s a bolt instead of a plunger with a spring. You turn it by hand until you feel resistance then turn the engine over with a wrench and keep finger tightening it until it won’t go any further then back it out 1/4 of a turn and start the bike then you can adjust it until the noise is gone and then lock it down tight with the locking not. They are a lot better and are cheap to buy 👍🏻
@chriscs9080

@@motomc6962 Well I actually bought a new automatic tensioner for 15$ and the noise is gone . It seems that the old tensioner could not hold the tension and became loose under load .You can also tighten the automatic tensioner more by turning the screw manually but I guess a bit of noise at high rpm its ok .. better a bit loose than tight! By the way I also replaced the timing chain which had over 80.000 km just to be safe.. the guides seem to be fine so I did not replace them because I had also to wait 2-3 weeks for the order . I placed an order and I will replace them in the future.
@motomc6962

@@chriscs9080 ahh see I bought a new automatic and the noise was still there and my bike only has 6k miles on it so there is nothing wrong with the chain or guides, set the manual tensioner so it was roughly the same as the automatic ones with the noise then just turned it a tiny bit until the noise just barely went away
@chriscs9080
@chriscs9080 3 жыл бұрын
@@motomc6962 6k miles seem too low to have issues with the tensioner . My bike has 50k miles + and this is the second tensioner I replace. Also I don't understand why a new automatic tensioner would not work .. maybe was bad quality OEM ? Manual seems fine , I just don't like the idea to have to readjust it ..also I am afraid that I would have it tighter than it should be causing wear .
