What about lubricating the chain after cleaning? Yes theres o rings and yes theres grease inside. Nevertheless you need to lube the area where the chain is running on the sprockets. Or it will wear prematurely. I think Diesel ist only sufficient for cleaning, but not for lubricating. Infact the lubrication properties are not very good and it will be hurled off the chain after a few miles. Thats why chain grease is a thick, sticky grease.

@@GratefulOverlander Hugely underrated comment haha. If only potential employers understood just how much knowledge can be gained from sources other than certification programs and schools. Not to devalue those things as they provide consistent and predictable rhetoric to students which can be very valuable to a business when training new recruits, but I wish the world were at least a bit more open-minded and willing to test people and let them prove themselves before denying even the chance of an interview if someone doesn't have a piece of paper with a nice stamp on it.

@@Cheezmonka facts, man… I was one of the most not mechanically inclined men I have ever known. But after doing my own maintenance on cars and bikes for the last 3 to 4 years thanks to a local mechanic I had who would make sure I learned how to do whatever he was working on, feels good man. He just thought it was pathetic I didn't know how to do anything. He would go on and on about how he's had his own mechanic shop for 30 years and learned how to do everything by reading the books himself no schooling. He even had certified diesel mechanics texting him about various new model trucks. Anyways, feels good to not get robbed by the mechanic anymore. Had a car blow up on me after a oil change and realized it might have been the fault of the teenagers who I trusted with my car. Never again.😂

Great video! Thx! I use a small squeeze bottle of chain cleaner, toothbrush, and small spray can of chain wax, stored in a ziplock bag with some folded blue HD paper towels, and a mini Snapjack axle stand (with a velcro brake lever strap). When available I go to a wand car wash bay, clean the chain with the chain cleaner, brush and HD paper towel, then wash the bike including a light spray/rinse off of the chain, then dry, being sure not to spray too much water pressure on key areas. I finish with waxing the chain using a cloth to limit any over spray of the wax on the wheel or other parts of the bike. Good time to check the tire tread condition and for any debris in the tread (screws/nails) as well as air pressures. I also use a clean wet micro cloth while washing to clean my helmet, and outer gear of any bugs and such. Then voila, bike and gear clean, chain clean and lubed (adjusted if needed), and ready to go. I've got the process down to about 20 minutes in total. Add a few minutes for gas, washroom, drink/snack, and passer-by chat time of course. Nothing like having the bike and gear all tended to and clean, gas tank full, empty bladder (and/or bowel), and a cool soothing drink in hand, nesting at the bike, taking in the local flair, and conversations that inevitably ensue. Great topic! Thx! 😉👍

Great video! One more remark though, when checking chain tension, check it at multiple points. Often chains can stretch and chains wear sort uneven, and you can have different amounts of slack depending on where it sits. So by going checking all along the chain you can figure out the tightest point to prevent accidentally over (or under) tightening.

@@Zeth2571 Youre wrong. @Don2006

@@Chris-yy7qc A minor nuance: The pressure of the chain on the sprocket will cut through any lubricating film between roller and sprocket within just a few revolutions. For what it's worth: At the Cleveland international motorcycle show last February I asked the representative at the Kawasaki display about chain maintenance on long trips. (I was planning to ride my Honda VFR800 on Route 66 across the country this year, but COVID-19 had other ideas.) The rep told me that cleaning an O-ring chain on a road bike isn't that critical. Every day or two, and especially after riding in rain, just make sure to lube the chain with a quality product and you should be good to go he said, even for thousands of miles. Possibly this is different for off-road riding. Unless he was trying to drum up business for the service department, this seemed like reasonable advice. Next year I hope to apply it.

And protector too. 2) You can get it for free! 3) Use a velcro strap to hold the front brake. 4) Use a tooth brush to clean. 5) Use a rag to wipe. 6) Chain maintenance should be done every 500 miles. 7) I bought a motorcycle stand from Amazon that works great but I see now I didnt need to do that. What I like about my stand, however, is that it is very stable and it doesnt weigh too much.

When checking chain slack, its best to check with the bike on the ground and suspension compressed, you can simply lean over the sit and push it down. But before, put the bike in 1st gear and roll it back to get the slack out of the top and into the botttom, then measure applying load to the seat. If you check it without load it may or may not add more chain slack. But when you do compressed u factor in for hitting bumps. If you hit a bump and your chain is too tight then your chain becomes your suspension. For care, I like to use chain wax once a month, but after every ride I lube with regular oil. The wax spray helps keep the rust off the sides, and the daily oil keeps the chain lubricated nicely. My chains last a good long time, and they dont stretch much.

@Jeff Greenspon All you use is wax? If so its best to oil it lightly after every ride when the chain is hot. I use a squirt bottle/slanted tip the kind that you squeeze, its filled with oil. After I park the bike from a ride, I put it on the stands and spin the back wheel by hand, while the tip of the bottle is gliding and oiling the chain. I do this on the inside and outer chain, then with a dirty rag wipe off the access. Only takes me no more then a minute.

If shaft brakes on a trail, it might be more difficult to get parts than chain and sprockets. Shaft might last for a very long time but if it brakes it is costly to repair (and thats the shaft, if something happens to the final drive that is another expensive part). Saves on maintenance but for chains you can get scottoiler which reduces the maintenance. From what I read shafts reduce power output on rear tyre by 30% of what is generated at the engine, chains approx 15%.

I made the classic crutch stand. The bolt that went through the hand handle is bent at about 45°, so I can stick the one threaded end into the top of the crutch stand and the other head end gets stuck through a hole in the engine bash plate to lift the front wheel. I know o-ring chains are sealed and permanently lubricated, but I still lubricate with Pam vegatable oil spray after riding and brushing. The schedule is every tank which is about 175mi-200mi. I can feel the chain turn slightly freer as I lube, but I know its all thrown off within a few miles, but the chain has a wet look for about 150mi and it doesn't gunk up with sand and grime that trash the o-rings. Using diesel scavanged from the pump is brillant.

The sticker on the swing illustrates this but is a bit confusing. I like the use of free diesel as a cleaner!

(I am not strong enough to lift the bike from the ground like Bret, I need to be standing and grabbing the passenger hand bar to lift the rear wheel and the tool get in position by gravity...)

Thinking about the improvised side stand, I was thinking to cut the wing nut bolts down so not so much thread, then thought of a piece of angle the appropriate length might be able to be fixed to the side stand on the bike. Bit like a wrap around sleeve. Although not all side stands might be straight could either bend to mirror shape of affix to front fork or other straight section on the bike. Regardless it got me thinking how and where I could put a side stand. Used to just find a stick in the bush, but I guess it's the innovation that is one of the rewards that come from being on the trail. Cheers Brett from down under 🇦🇺

Chain Adjustment!! Awesome!!

This was something I have been wondering about for a while: what to bring for chain maintenance? Tiny spray bottle with kerosene? What size can of lube? Where to put that stuff? Your luggage rack system is nifty and I definitely learned something there. Side stand was genius. The only question I had was around the slack adjustment method. My MoM says to adjust while on side stand with weight on back tire. Curious about the difference there. Honda vs KTM? That simple? I am still new to all this so have lots to learn!

Bret, I know you have been doing this for a long time. I noticed your rear tire was getting a little worn. I am really enjoying this Motoz Tractionator Adventure. Running the TKC80 front still. This rear has been exceptional except a fresh rain oily road. Off road I am just as happy as the TKC80. More bite in mud. Deeper tread. I am not easy on this poor bike but do take care of it maintenance wise. This tire is a solid 5k mile tire. The front TKC80 is roughly 6+ depending on cupping. Lots of rooster tails in gravel etc and no chunking.

Wow, this is really cool idea on chain maintenance! You're not dragging around chain lube and chain cleaner in your luggage, and diesel fuel keeps those rubber seals moisty and gives some anti-corrosion coating. I'm currently trying a no-maintenance on the chain, except adjustment if needed. It doesn't pick up much dirt since it's not covered with any lube or diesel, and it turned rides into pure hustle-free joy, we'll see for how long it lasts. If it doesn't last at least 20000km, I'll stick to your approach, I ran through 3 chains already and I consider your approach to have the best chain longevity and maintenance hustle ratio))

there have been a ton of videos made on this topic and with modern Orings and Xrings, there seems to be virtually no benefit whatsoever to cleaning or lubing them. they are lubed INTERNALLY and if cleaning the outside affects those rings, then your chain will be toast soon anyway because its not sealed anymore. any residue left on the chain will just create grime and if there's no residue then why are we lubricating? its kind of like cleaning your toothbrush with mouthwash before using it. probably doesn't hurt but also probably a waste of time lol.

Buy some white chain wax spray and you are good to go. If it is really dirty just go to a power washer and use clean water to spray the big dirt off. When I sold my previous motorcycle my chain was at 29.000 km without any signs of wear, was only adjusted once and I never degreased and cleaned it. It also endured 5 months of rain almost everyday after which I put on a new layer of chain wax spray. Hope you read this before it gets deleted and saves you some time, effort and money.

Some good advice. One question: You do show cleaning of the chain from the outside of the chain. I do believe the dust out there cannot move inside to damage the chain due to centrifugal force. Wouldn‘t it be more important to wash the inside of the chain to remove dust and dirt before it causes wear to the sprockets and makes its way towards the chain‘s o-rings?

I wish I could use a stand like that. My Multistrada pivot point on side stand is so far forward, that when I push the rear wheel up, the bike becomes very unstable. Not mention, Ducatis have a rest for weak stand mounts which are part of the frame. I hate packing more weight on for a center stand so I’ll just do the parking lot shuffle…

i personally use motor oil for car. it has the best slippery anti-wear property and it clean the chain as it drips and get flung. i ride a 125cc motorcycle and i worn 3 O-ring chain before switching to a DID "heavy-duty" standard chain without O-rings. i tried everything in the past from wax spray to grease, i found the best to be motor oil. you can just bring a little 100ml bottle and you just drip the oil onto the INSIDE of the chain.

Once you know how tight your chain needs to be with an unweighted wheel, you can do it that way. It's a matter of learning your bike - the way Bret checks tension in this video is not the way ktm manual specifies it, even if the wheel was on the ground. just tension it to spec, then lift up the wheel and make a mental note (or write down) some measurement for that state.
