@@pepperghost007 Hey mate sorry for the late reply, didn't see your one down here. As for the requirements of the learners permit they'll all be listed on the VicRoads website I'm sure. It's been a while since I got mine so probably a lot has changed :-) As for the motorcycle, you'll need one which is LAMS, essentially less than a certain power to weight ratio, plenty of options to choose from :-)

Sorry to hear Adrian, but rest assured many, many people don't pass on the first go. It's really tricky to remember everything with the nerves of a test and new to riding, so don't worry about it 🙂 Yeah 100%, practice with a push bike and just pretend it's a motorcycle and the steps they taught you will eventually just become second nature. The head check has already saved my ass quite a few times, so it's no joke ha ha

@@salmanfarisbahaswan2433 Hello Salman, nice to meet you :), so in Australia, similar to other countries, it's possible to "convert" your license from other nations, but it depends on the country, your date of birth and the date you arrive in Australia. Have a look at this form from VicRoads >> www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/renew-replace-or-update/new-to-victoria/convert-your-overseas-licence If you're allowed to 'convert' your license into a Victorian license, but best to check with VicRoads. Depending on the rules in your home country, you 'may' only receive a car license in Australia. For example, if in Indonesia, getting a license means you can automatically drive cars and motorcycles, I'm not sure if that is permissible in Australia or not.

Do you have to bring your own motorcycle or they provide you with one?
@stuz32
@stuz32 Жыл бұрын
For the learners permit assessment they provide a motorcycle as you won't have a learners permit yet, but it's probably possible to bring your own motorcycle if you have a way of getting a road legal motorcycle to the range such as a car trailer, or if a friend with a full licence can ride it there with you as pillion passenger I suppose. Probably more trouble than it's worth though. Once I got the licence permit, I bought my own motorcycle and then used that for the check ride and final license assessment, because by that stage in the process I had a lot more practice with my own machine. To save yourself trouble, I would just use the motorcycle they offer for the learner permit :-). Then for the check ride and final assessment, it's up to you. My missus for example continued to use their motorcycle, even though she bought her own because she didn't want to risk dropping her new motorcycle on their range doing emergency stops etc. In her head it made sense to do the course with their machine rather than hers, so it's up to how you feel / confidence level :-)

Hi, thanks for your very useful upload.As I understand here in "D u b a i" Yard/Range test is designed based on Australian model. I just passed the Yard test consisting of 1- Sharp Left turn, then Controlled-Slow-Stop in the box, 2- Slow Ride 3- Sharp-Right-Turn, followed by Quick Stop 4- Curve-Left-Side (no breaks, no clutch) followed by the maneuver but Right-Side. 5- Obstacle Avoidance. I do believe that instructions given to me by my instructors for Sharp right/left turns are incorrect and even unsafe, which goes as follows: For Sharp-Left-Turn practice/test, start at the opposite corner of rectangular yard with respect to where the sharp curve is marked on the ground. 1- Before you start, head-check both sides, 2- 1st gear, then 2nd gear while riding on the long side of the yard, then turn left, ride along the width of the yard, at the end, turn left again (now you are on the second long side of the yard, facing the sharp left curve marking located at the other end of the side you are on), 3- Turn on Left signal, later left-head-check (still in 2nd gear) 4- Once inside the curve, no breaks, no clutch at all. This part I think is wrong. I believe rider should reduce speed, and prior to entering the curve, he/she must change to first gear (in this case), then move clutch to friction zone and control the speed with the clutch and a bit more throttle if needed (similar to the way clutch is used in Slow-ride practice). What do you think of my observation ? Cheers
@stuz32
@stuz32 3 жыл бұрын
Very interesting to hear it's a similar test in Dubai, glad the video was interesting and congratulations on passing ! :) Yeah, agree with your observations, I would treat a curve the same on a manual motorcycle and a manual transmission car, slowing down to an appropriate speed and getting into the correct gear before entering the curve, releasing the clutch so you're in gear and the engine is transmitting power to the wheels, proceed through the corner and once you can see the exit, roll on throttle slowly and accelerate up to the speed limit. Adjusting for weather / visibility etc. I wouldn't hold the clutch in during a corner, that would feel quite unstable to me :)
@Golobtin
@Golobtin 3 жыл бұрын
@@stuz32 well said thanks, clutch feathering is for very sharp turns like this one and very slow speed. Speed in my case would be like 3-5 km/h. I think with clutch in friction zone, going through the curve in 2nd gear would be fine too. If clutch is not in friction zone( i.e. fully released, very slow speed, sharp and short curve), and the riders is forced to increase the speed to avoid a fall to the left, he has no option but to use throttle, as a result, bike might jump and cause change of direction or a fall...... In here you cannot bring your own bike to training or test; you have to use their Indian Pulsar 160cc bikes which are generally in poor shape. Due to incorrect chain slack, and perhaps worn down rear wheel rubber damper, I noticed that the bikes jerk and jump ahead in low speeds when you apply throttle (even a bit and gently) . So, again, I think in sharp curves and very low speeds, feathering the clutch adds to the control and stability of the bike. I called the RTA (Road and Transport Authority which sees over the Driving School's Programs and the Testing) today and talked to one of their managers. I explained why I think their instruction on sharp turns is incorrect and unsafe. He seemed convinced and said he would discuss it with relevant people. There were other aspects of their program that I believe can be improved. He was receptive of those points as well..As I said, I have passed the test, but could not be indifferent on some thing that is wrong and unsafe. I performed sharp turns as they wanted me to do in order to pass, but raised objections in training school and now with the RTA. I am optimistic that they would act upon it....Cheers

Is this just to get your L's in VIC? You learn all that in 3.5 hours on two days? So in 7 hours total training from never riding a motorcycle you have to do all that? I'm on day two in NSW and nothing has been said about an actual test.
@stuz32
@stuz32 2 жыл бұрын
Hey bud, yep this is covering the "off-road" course test to attain your learners permit in Victoria that's correct. On the same two-day permit course there is also an "on-road" assessment, but it's arguably easier to pass than the off-road test, as they are not watching you like a hawk making sure you do everything perfectly. The on-road assessment is generally a bit more easy going, they still want you to do all the things you have learnt but they are a bit more forgiving, probably because they can appreciate it's on the road and many people would be a little shaky for the first time. Overall the two-day learners permit course is I believe about 15 hours in total which covers a written test, classroom activities, practice drills, off-road assessment and the on-road assessment. There is also, in Victoria anyway, a pre-learners course which you can do which focuses more on just riding the motorcycle if you think you'll struggle with the pace. Personally myself, nor my missus, who had zero motorcycle experience felt the need to do that pre-course, but it's there for people who want a bit more hands on time :-)

Hey mate, this is just a demonstration, not a real test. Yeah unlikely they would let you record the actual test, although I never asked, so.... who knows, maybe they might. In Victoria having a camera is now legal, it used to be not allowed but that rule was overturned, which is very good in my opinion, I would rather be recording constantly in case something happens. Making phone calls / listening to music isn't allowed whilst on LAMS in Victoria.

Hi, I’m planning to get motorcycle license but I never rides before even once in my life. How can I practise since I don’t have a bike? Is there any other way? Thank you
@stuz32
@stuz32 Жыл бұрын
I would recommend riding a bicycle and practice balance and riding vey slowly without putting your foot down :-). I would also recommend reading the motorcycle handbook provided by VicRoads at least twice as there is lots of very useful information about what riding a motorcycle is like, and what new skills you'll need to keep in mind. One example is called "counter steering", which put simply, in order to initiate a turn on a motorcycle, you intentionally push forward on the handlebar in the direction you wish to turn, which causes the motorcycle to "tip" in the direction of the turn, then you steer through the turn. This process is identical on a bicyce but it's very subtle and your body does it automatically :-). Other concepts like using the rear brake to increase low speed stability is another trick. Lots of essential topics to conceptualize and understand even before you sit on a motorcycle for the first time. So there is plenty of things to read and watch on KZbin to prepare before you attend the training :-). Being able to ride a bicycle however I would say is mandatory, so that's a good place to start your practice :-)

Great video man, just a few questions. When I go for my 2 day course after passing that does that mean I’m allowed to ride by myself? And also for the 2 day course, is the second day a test similar to what you are demonstrating in the video?
@wereoursouls3472
@wereoursouls3472 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, once you pass the basic 2 day course, you can ride by yourself. Here's a link to a KZbin of someone that did the 2 day basic course. I found it really helpful. It's for south Australia but should be pretty similar. Day 1 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpiTo6iNjbOLgrs Day 2 kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6STiImJdptkbJo
@stuz32
@stuz32 Жыл бұрын
Hey bud, Yep that's correct, once you pass the 2-day course you'll have your learners permit and you'll be free to ride around yourself to practise until you're comfortable to do the check ride and final assessment. There are limits however how quickly you can attend the check ride and final assessment (three months from memory), and also a "deadline" so to speak, the learners permit does expire in Victoria after a period but is pretty generous. Don't quote me, but I think it's a year or two, so you have lots of time to practise if you need more time. Yep the assessment on day 2 is the same test as I'm demonstrating in the video and the instructor will be watching you ride the course and not giving any "tips" / "help". The best advice I can give for the learner permit is read the motorcycle handbook twice before you go, you need to know the answers for the written test (not general knowledge), and be very careful with head checks during the assessment. It's really easy to forget a head check and fail the test. On the second day, if you pass the assessment, you'll then also head out as a group onto the road and do another quick "on road" assessment, which will be the instructor following you to see you using the skills learnt over the two days. This "on road" test however is a lot more lenient as they know people are very nervous riding on the road for the first time, so as long as you don't do something crazy like speed excessively or have an accident, this "on road" test is pretty painless. It's very similar to the "check ride", which I cover in another video but much shorter. Literally just a ride around the block and back :-). The formal "check ride" is a much longer ride. Hope that helps :-)

i have trouble with the slow speed control for 12 seconds so if i just move my handlebars to the left and right and keep switching them for every 2 seconds at like 8 km per hour would i be able to do it? i dont understand how it works
@stuz32
@stuz32 Жыл бұрын
You could do that yes, but you would have to be a little careful because you have to also ride between two parallel lines while you do the slow maneuver. The key for riding slow I find is gently dragging the rear brake which will give you stability; it feels a bit like when somebody holds the rear of your bicycle when you learn to ride, much more control. If you're riding a manual transmission it's slightly more tricky as you need to feather the clutch so you don't stall, but also keep momentum. Key point here is to keep the engine revs a little higher and practice pulling in the clutch and ride as slow as possible. These three things combined will give you much more stability. But I totally understand the left and right handlebar movement, I often do this too on uneven surfaces or bumpy asphalt.

Hey man I have a few questions about learners. I am going for mine in June whats the pass rate like? is it hard to fail and if the chance of failing happens can i just redo the course or would i need to repay as I am more than likely going to do my Learners permit assessment at HART Kilsyth
@stuz32
@stuz32 2 жыл бұрын
Hey bud, so in the two learners permit courses I attended, in the first one one guy failed the off-road assessment for not doing head checks (otherwise a very experienced dirt bike rider), and my missus failed the off-road test for I think overshooting the emergency stop and one of the other ones, she was okay for head checks though. On her second attempt she passed with no issues, but there was another person who failed, but I didn't find out why. If you don't pass on the first round you can attempt to get the learners permit again like my missus did at no cost, I'm not sure what happens if you fail a second time. So with that experience I would say the pass rate is about 80%, but again, I'm just some guy on the internet with limited data :-). It's certainly not like the "old days" like when my brother got his licence, which was more or less, drive around the basketball court and here is your learners permit, so chalk and cheese compared to now, but to be honest I think it's a good thing. Another tip is to make sure you read the handbook front to back as there is a written test, it's not rocket science but you do need to read it :-)

My partner didn't pass the first time on the motorcycle permit, but passed easily on the second attempt, so don't stress it happens all the time. The check ride is a lot easier as they are more lenient, but they are still looking for you to be completing the ride exactly as they teach you, and to be honest the skills you'll learn in the handbook and the learners permit course will set you up to be a safer rider on the road. Do you need to complete 120 hours or hold a learners permit for 12 months before you can get motorbike learners
@stuz32
@stuz32 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Chayse, As far as I know the only requirement is to hold a learner permit to go for the motorcycle course, they don't mention a minimum number of hours or duration. I met one woman who was in her 40's who never held a car licence, who got her learner permit in order to to the course to get her motorcycle licence. So as far as I know it should be possible. In order to get your learner permit it's pretty straight forward these days, just need to read up on the road laws and pass an online test. Back when I got my learner permit they had a thing called a hazard perception test, not sure if this exists anymore. If you pass your off-road test like in the video above you'll then proceed to a short on-road test on the motorcycle, which might be pretty full on if you have never driven on the road before and had to adhere to all the rules. I know it took me a few trips on the road when I first started driving to feel confident I knew the road rules and could apply then without thinking back to the book. If you've ridden motorcycles before on private land, this might not be as bad as you'll already have the skills to ride, you'll then just have to apply road rules on top, but if you've never ride a motorcycle, and also never driven a car on the road with a fully licensed driver, I would say it would be a good idea to ask a fully licensed driver if you can have a bit of practice applying the lessons learnt in the learner permit before doing the course so you don't have to deal with being on the road for the first time and being on a motorcycle for the first time. Up to you of course, but thinking back to when I first started driving, personally I think doing this motorcycle course the day after I got my permit would be pretty full on. Back then I had ridden a motorcycle maybe once on a friend's farm, that was the extent of my driving/ riding experience. It took me maybe 4 hours worth of driving around an industrial zone with my dad practicing stopping, giving way, parking etc before I started learning on the road at night and then progressed to driving finally driving in peak hour traffic etc on the road. But yeah, up to you really :)

Hi, any tips for doing the actual licence assessment? Will it be like the learners permit on premise + check ride combined into one assessment? Thanks
@stuz32
@stuz32 Жыл бұрын
Hey bud, Yep so the license assessment will follow the exact same pattern as the checkride except you'll only do one "leg" of the checkride and it's just yourself and the instructor behind. Before you set off you'll also repeat the same off-road assessment which you did for the learner permit. So no tricks, just remember all the proper ways to do things and you'll pass no worries :-) The biggest tip I can give is just to try to practise riding around the same time and area where your test will take place and that'll mentally prepare you so you can focus on your riding technique rather than being frazzled by traffic :-)

Everyone gets nervous mate, you'll be fine :-). If you have access to a push bike it wouldn't hurt to have a muck around just to get your bearings. If you're going for a manual licence, the feeling of riding the clutch is similar to riding a push bike with the rear brake on, while somebody pushes the seat, or like if you're going down a gentle slope with the rear brake on. If you can imagine that situation on a push bike and just maintain your balance, that's what it'll feel like :-) They'll give you all the instructions you need to be able to do it. A thing I found useful is they'll tell you to keep your eyes up ahead of you, it'll make balancing much easier, if you look down the bike will feel more unstable

@stuz32
@stuz32 3 жыл бұрын
@@tezzdogger6073 Depending on the type of bike you're interested in really. For a naked bike you could try sitting on the SV650, they come with a short seat option I believe. I felt that bike was very compact and easy to straddle. Another option could be Husqvarna Vitpilen 400, also sat on one of those and the ergonomics would be pretty good for a shorter person I reckon. If you were more interested in a cruiser style motorcycle, the Honda Rebel 500 had a very low seat and good ergonomics, you should have no problem with that one. My partner is ~155cm tall and she ended up getting a Honda Super Cub. The seat on that one is actually fairly tall, so we ended up modifying her boots with some rubber from Clark Rubber to boost her height a bit to give her a bit more confidence. Once you get over the 'feeling' of the weight of the machine, I think you'll find just moving your body over a bit on the seat to the left when you stop at the lights will give you enough reach to touch the road and still be able to hold the rear brake with your right foot. It's probably less about height and more about knowing the balance of the bike. Having that said, my partner has dropped her bike a few times for example when the side of the road slopes down to the left, so she sometimes has to be careful when coming to a stop to make sure she has enough height to stop safely. Best bet is to do a bit of research online to narrow down your choices and then sit on a few in the showroom. The bikes will feel very clumsy and heavy on the showroom floor, but you do get used to it, and when the machine is moving down the road you don't really feel the weight.

Thank you so much waiting for you detailed response
@stuz32
@stuz32 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, Sorry for the slow reply, missed the comment. Yep, you and I are in the same boat, I also had my full car license before going for my motorcycle license. I'm not 100% sure if they take prior motorcycle license experience, but check with VicRoads, because depending on which country your other licence is from, you might be able to transfer to an Australian motorcycle license :) As for the demerit points, sadly they are tied together, for example if your car license was suspended for speeding fines, so will your motorcycle license. Same for drink driving / drug driving etc. So the motorcycle license process is three parts; learner permit, check ride and motorcycle license test. The learner permit test is over 2 days with a written test and a practical off-road test, as per the video. You can download a book, in the description to study for the written test, it's very easy don't worry, common sense stuff. You'll also be asked to ride on-road on the same day as the learner permit test, but it's quite forgiving, you can make a few little mistakes, but obviously do the best you can to remember head checks, buffering away from oncoming and parked vehicles, indicating, looking in you mirror before stopping etc. The off-road test, on the range, is very strict, so be careful when doing the test to always remember your head check, this is the easiest way to fail the test. After a period of time, I think 3 months, you come back for a 'check ride', which is comprised of another quick run on the range with an instructor, and you'll go in a group, taking turns leading with the instructor behind you taking notes. They'll give you suggestions and tips how to improve your skills and let you know what to practice for your license test. Again, the check ride isn't very strict, you can make a few little mistakes, but if you practice the skills they teach you'll be fine. The final test is the license test, this is very similar to the check ride, but it's just yourself and the instructor. You'll do the same off-road test again, as per the video, and then do the on-road assessment. The instructor will take you on a 20~30 minute ride with a few breaks in between to tell you the next spot. You'll have an opportunity at each spot to explain any errors you have made, if you did it for a good reason. For example, you might not buffer an oncoming car, if you are going past a parked car and notice the driver about to get out and want to avoid the door. Once you get your motorcycle license you'll be a provisional driver for 3 years, which means only LAMS motorcycles, no passenger, no alcohol (zero BAC). Once the 3 years are up you can get something more powerful and take a passenger. Sadly being a full licence driver doesn't allow you to skip the probationary period :), I'm probationary till 2023 ;) Hope this helps, Cheers

Hey mate, thanks for making a detailed video on what's to be expected. Like most people here, i have no experience with riding motorcycles, so I'm just wondering if you have any more helpful tips? I've gone back through the comments and read some already, like getting practice on a bike first, practice going slow as long as you can, getting your balance down, going over the learners book a lot, and head checks. It's been a couple of years since I've rode a bike, so my balancing could definitely use some improvement. How much would you say your weight matters? I'm 6'2 "and weigh 100 kilos, so I'm hoping that little embarrassing note won't impede much. Again, thanks for the great video and help.

Hey bud, No worries at all 🙂, yeah I was in the same boat when I was getting my license, and just wished somebody made a video to show what was coming. So regarding your height and weight, I reckon the only issue you may have is the bikes they provide at HART (CB125), are fairly small bikes as they want to keep it approachable for lots of different people. I think you'll find yourself a bit cramped and may hit your knees on the handlebar while turning for example. For comparison I'm about 188 cm tall and find the CB125 a bit tight. On the day you might be able to ask them to slightly adjust the handlebars forward for you perhaps so you can ride a bit more comfortably. The silver lining however is once you get your learners permit, you can immediately go to your local bike shop and purchase something a little larger to practice on and complete the check ride / license assessment. Myself for example I completed check ride on the CB125 (and hated it), and completed the final license assessment on my own, brand new, personal machine (CRF250LA). I wanted to have the ABS and no mechanical trouble while I was learning so just got a new machine. Your weight however I think you'll find to be an advantage as the bike will feel a lot more stable. I actually have the opposite problem, weighing about 66kg and I really get blown around by the wind, tall and skinny. There is a good video on KZbin of some British guys doing some experiments in the old days showing how a heavier rider can reduce the possibility of getting speed wobbles for instance, so I think you're actually kinda lucky being a little heavier, it'll be an advantage 🙂

Hey bud, So during the learner's permit assessment I believe it's a "three strikes you're out" type deal when you're being finally assessed and the instructor won't correct your mistakes. They will give you a brief speech before the assessment to remind you to do everything by the book and as practiced ie: head check is the big one. I personally didn't have any opportunity to repeat aspects of the learner's permit assessment so I'm not 100% sure, but I can confirm on my final licence assessment, during the range check I stuffed up the left turn and the instructor let me "try again" before we went out on the road for the licence test, they're pretty forgiving to be honest, everyone is nervous :-). The silver lining however is, if you don't pass, you'll get another chance to try without cost. My missus didn't pass on the first try and many others don't, so just remember the head check, it's by far the easiest way to fail :-)

@stuz32
@stuz32 3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, no worries at all, glad to help. Good choice on the Yamaha Tricity 300, very nice machine :-). Since you have a full license, like I did, you're allowed to drive manual and automatic vehicles irrespective if you're comfortable driving them or not, so no need to get a manual learner permit :-). Essentially when you go to sign up to the training centre, they will ask whether you would like to learn on a motorcycle with a manual transmission or automatic transmission. Since the Tricity is an automatic, and if you're not too interested in learning manual, best bet to just opt for the automatic transmission machine for the training and motorcycle license. The only downfall of this, is that you'll be restricted to operating an automatic transmission motorcycle until your motorcycle license probation period has expired (3 years). Once that period is over, you can operate both manual and automatic motorcycles I believe, just as P-Platers who get an 'automatic' license are allowed to drive both manual and automatic vehicles once they get off their P-Plates. The other option, just putting it out there, is at HART, you can opt for the Postie bike (CT110) as a learning motorcycle, which rides like an automatic, but is classed in the eyes of VicRoads as a 'manual', so you'll get the best of both worlds. If you do a KZbin search on how to ride a postie bike, it's quite similar to a manual transmission, but without a clutch. My partner has driven manual cars only a few times in her life, and did the training on the postie just so she could 'keep her options open' as she hadn't decided whether she was going to buy a manual or automatic machine for her first bike. But totally up to you :-)

@@peemun4545 No worries at all mate. Yeah probably the way to go if you know exactly what bike you want to get :-). So the VicRoads Rider's Handbook is 100% mandatory reading for the training as there is a written test on the contents of the book at the end of day one (I've got a link to the PDF you can download in the description of the video, or you can pick up a printed copy from VicRoads for a small fee). So you'll want to read through the book before turning up to your first day of the motorcycle training or you might get caught out. The written test isn't crazy difficult or anything, and is mostly common sense, but the book does have a lot of useful information that you need to know as a motorcyclist and covers some concepts that (most) car drivers won't know about such as object fixation and counter steering, concepts you'll need to know to stay safe on the road, I learnt quite a lot from the book even before getting to the training, and i've been driving for quite a long time.

So in general, a bit more revs, say around 2000 ~ 2500 rpm, and ride the clutch friction point and release the clutch a little slower. Eventually you'll just do it by feel and by ear, everyone struggles at first, you won't be the last :-)

In a manual car if you knew the lights were about to change, you would get "ready" by pushing in the clutch, putting the car in first gear and then would release the handbrake and ride the clutch to move away when the light goes green, exactly the same :-), only difference is on a motorcycle there isn't a handbrake, but you can use the rear brake which acts like a handbrake and leaves your hands free to operate the controls
