Passed my Ls a couple of weeks ago at Kilsyth after falling on the road attempt one haha woops. The instructor on the second attempt was kind enough to take us another route as I was getting anxious about it and I did just fine. Just bought a bike, should be picking it up by Monday! Will definitely be watching this again before I go for my checkride in a good few months. Also thanks for introducing me to the amazing FortNine, such good content! i wanna go get my motorbike L's again.. i had them a few years ago, but didn't ever go on the road because i didn't have the confidence, i didn't have a car licence at the time either, now i've got one and i want to go for it again, these videos are helping me prepare mentally, though i wish you were allowed to practise on the road before you take the L's test, it's a bummer that you can't actually get on the road until you do the on road assessment in Tas, means you have to get used to it while you're being judged for it.

I spent a long time in the car park after getting my L's mate just riding around practicing, no shame in that :-). I'm pretty bloody good at slow maneuvers now too, better than a lot of other motorcyclists I see that's for sure ! ^_^

Great video. Thanks for sharing! I'm on the fence about riding and have booked in for a course. I used to ride dirt bike in the country when I was a kid. I've been driving a car for 40 years so it was good hearing you speak about experience driving. It appears that the 'attitude' and skill sets in riding is what's going to save your life. But also acknowledging the horror of a car hitting you from behind while you're at the lights or from the opposite side of the road when you're riding can be quite intimidating.

I grew up in Boronia so I’m familiar with these roads too, you’ve made me feel so at ease 😊. I’ve only been riding again since December last year (Dirt bikes), 22 year gap from the PW50 I had as a kid, I had a bad stack when I was 6, bike landed on top of me and I got burnt pretty badly. Now I live for the weekends when we go to the MCTC track you went past on Colchester road 😊 on my CRF230F 💕❤️💕. Thank you for all your tips, I’ll keep them in mind this weekend 😁.

I used to run on Glasgow Rd, Shefield Rd and all that area back in the 80s. There were hardly any houses. The bitumen surface was much more rural. A lot of the roads in the area were 80Kmh then, I'm pretty sure Liverpool Rd was 100Kmh between the Eastwood golf course and Mt Dandenong Rd almost no traffic. Interesting.

Watched this and your learners assessment video. Super useful video with a ton of info and the way you talk and explain things makes it a lot better. I reckon I'm going for my learners soon at HART Kilsyth when I can find the time and an appointment (they're booked out like 2 months in advance sadly). Will keep these videos in mind for sure. Good on ya Jayden and thanks for the comment, glad to know these videos are useful, I sure would have liked a bit more information when I started the license process, hence the videos 🙂 I'll do another video to cover the actual final license assessment eventually, but it's very similar to the checkride, just much shorter. The guys are Kilsyth are good, I had no dramas, just remember to read the riders handbook before you go, personally I read it about 3 times to make sure I knew it back to front, and the other big tip is to be very careful of head checks as it's the easiest way to miss out on passing and getting your learners permit. Hope it all goes well 🙂

I’m going for my check ride on the 17th of feb at the somerton hart course. Done about 2000km riding since I got the L’s, I’m on a dual sport too ( DR650 ), I’m not a tall rider, the ready position is pretty much the only position viable for me, good to see all the things I practiced are in the check ride, watching DanDanTheFireMan’s KZbin channel every other day has also been a massive help in keeping my safety protocols in check.

@@stuz32 yea, subscribed to motojitsu as well. I like DanDan more, just for the accident analysis and safe riding focus. I heard that you get a cross if you constantly cover your front brakes on the check ride? Seems a bit odd. Thankfully rev matching isn’t a no-no..

@@BadgerMcblasty yeah Dan has lots of good content. As for covering your front brake I know you'll lose a mark on the emergency stop as your hands need to be completely off the controls, but can't say for the check ride, I doubt the instructor will be able to see your fingers when they are behind you, so you can probably do it he he, same with rev matching, they probably won't be able to hear you rev matching, I suppose they are not 'instructing' us to rev match, so they might ask you not to do it....I'm not too sure to be honest. Personally I just rode exactly how they taught us during the check ride and licence test to be sure, no rev matching or any fancy stuff, just focusing on mirrors, head checks, maintain speed, buffering etc, and then once I got my licence, I was able to relax a bit and ride how I felt more comfortable. Personally I don't cover the front brake but I do rev match when I feel the need like approaching an intersection which I know will turn green shortly for example. At the end of the day, ride whatever way makes your riding safe and enjoyable :-)

@@stuz32 yeah. Isn’t it funny. Being prepared at all times to emergency brake isn’t the correct method and manner to emergency brake. You’d think wanting to mitigate the time between reaching for the brake and braking ( in an emergency) would be an ideal methodology. Depending on how fast you’re traveling, it’d be interesting to see how many metres would be travelled by the time you’d be applying pressure to the brake lever after reaching for it.

From memory there is no written test no, just the same learners permit check on the range, followed by the check ride with your group :-). There isn't any "pass" or "fail" on the check ride, they're just checking in to see how you're riding and will let you know if there are any areas to focus on improving :-)

@@johnsoncruz3476 For the final license assessment there is no written test, but you do repeat the off-road test just like your license permit (slow maneuver, emergency stop etc). Once that is done you'll do the final assessment on the road with the instructor behind you just like during the check ride. The test will be very short, mine was only about 15 minutes on the road. And that's it :-)

Hey bud, yep, essentially identical to the check ride, but it'll be just yourself and the instructor. He/ She will follow you through a set course and stop / ask questions along the way :-)

Hey mate, thanks very much for the comment, and hope you have a safe trip back to Australia. I've just had a quick look on the VicRoads site and unfortunately it looks like a license issued in China won't be able to be transferred to a Victorian license, so you may, depending on what VicRoads say, need to apply for a motorcycle license. The good news however is if you've been riding motorcycles for a while, you'll be in a good position to smash the test and get through easily, however I would say to still be careful as the test is very strict and you should 100% read the riders handbook to know what you'll be expected to do on the roads in Australia: www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/licence-and-permit-types/motorcycle-licence-and-learner-permit/victorian-rider-handbook As for motorcycles, you'll be on a LAMS designated machine if you need to get your license fresh, but there are plenty to choose from. It really depends what kind of riding you'll be doing, but if you'll be in a similar environment like Melbourne and looking to just get around, probably something with an automatic transmission would be best, but I would always say getting a manual license is better so that you have the option open to get a manual motorcycle if you wanted one, but it's up to you 🙂

One question about manual bikes as I've never drove or rode a manual anything before: how long do you think it takes to get used to the gear changes and clutch? I reckon I'll go for the manual license just because I'm already fairly used to everything else mentioned in the handbook.

@@sergeant_ozzy1037 So in my case, I was a bit the other way, fully proficient in driving manual cars, but no motorcycle experience. I think it took me maybe 4000 km until my brain automatically started changing gears without me having to consciously think about pulling in the clutch with my left hand and clicking up and down with my foot. Having that said though, my missus who only understood the concept of a manual transmission before going, she was able to ride the postie bike comfortably by the end of the two day course. So to be honest I think by the end of the 2 day course, given you know how to ride already, I think by the time the course is over you'll certainly be able to use the manual transmission, but you can expect it to feel a little clunky until you do a few thousand kilometres, and then at some point, it'll just click and your body will just know what to do, kinda like walking, or riding a bicycle, if you know what I mean :-). Once you know how to ride a bicycle, you can ride pretty much any bicycle, similar concept :-)

In the state of Victoria, not required no. Once you have your learners permit, you're permitted to ride by yourself to practise for your license assessment :-). There are however rules that apply whilst you hold a learners permit, and for a three year period after receiving your license. No non-LAMS motorcycles, no alcohol, no passengers. After three years of holding your full licence, these restrictions are removed :-)

Mmm not too sure, but probably not for an exhaust. If the tyres were bald or something I guess they might suggest you do the assessment on one of their motorcycles? If you're concerned maybe just do it on one of theirs?

I've got my learners course on the 31st of January, never ridden a motorcycle before but feel fairly confident in regards to how it works. Ive got a pre-learner course in a few days too to see how it is. Do you have any tips or advice for someone in my position? The road assessment is what i'm most nervous about. Thanks heaps.

Hey bud, so I reckon some extra tips which I think would have helped me in the past would be: 1. Buy your own gear and wear it at the course: They give you everything you need to complete the course, but if you have good quality gear that fits you perfectly I think you'll be more comfortable. I remember the day I got onto the road after passing the off-road assessment and it was bloody cold, and I was surprised how cold the wind was on my chest, it's was really distracting for me ha ha, it's fine now as I have a proper jacket which cuts the wind out really well. Also if you get yourself a helmet which fits you perfectly, you won't have to worry about the helmets they lend to people not quite fitting. I'm very glad I got my helmet early. 2. Ride your own bike: This might be difficult depending on your financial situation, but I ended up getting a brand new bike (nothing flash, Honda crf250l), and I completed the final license assessment using my own personal machine. This was much more comfortable and confidence inspiring than the CB125's they have as the loan machines. Not saying they are bad, but the first one I had at the learners course was great, felt solid, but on the check ride I must have got a dodgy one as it had some odd vibrations above 50km/h which was a bit unsettling and a distraction for the ride. 3. Don't use your own machine for the learners course: Counter to the point above, my missus dropped the bike about 6 times during the initial licese course (at low speed, she's totally fine ha ha, had full protective gear on including boots), so I would also, depending on how confident you are and any prior experience riding motorcycles, if you have absolutely zero experience, using their machines at least in the first learners course is a good idea just in case you drop it. 4. Read the motorcycle handbook several times before you do the course: it's a great little book and will make your life easy for the written test, you'll need to read it to pass easily. 5. Once you get your learners permit, go to Rebel Sport and buy some training cones, the ones they use for soccer, soft and pliable ones, then head to a totally empty carpark and hone your slow maneuver skills. For me it's the gift that just keeps on giving the more I ride. I spent hours and hours in the carpark, (not sexy I know), practicing figure eights, U-turns, emergency stops and swerving, making them progressively more complex and difficult. Now I'm very confident doing a U-turn in peak hour traffic and able to control the motorcycle even at very low speeds without being distracted by losing balance. This is very useful for just about anything at slow speed on the road like at give way signs, parking the motorcycle, coming up to a stop light, the list goes on and on. Compared to a car, which doesn't fall over when it stops, you'll be very surprised how important your low speed confidence is one you start riding. Riding at higher speeds is surprisingly easy. They will tell you a lot about corners though, that's where cars and motorcycles are very different and the concepts in the book go into these techniques. 6. Rain is fine, wind sucks: Contrary to what I was always told about riding in the rain, people make it out to sound like your going to slip off the road, complete falsehood, I've ridden in the rain and hail plenty of times and I find it very relaxing, of course need to change your riding style to suit the conditions, but it's not bad at all. The wind however, the wind is a real problem sometimes, high speed on the freeway is a real reality check and you just need to keep reminding yourself to be calm and the motorcycle itself wants to stay upright and going forward (physics), just need to keep your hands loose, and not get all tight and stressed out. Crosswind is also pretty scary sometimes, but eventually your body will just lean and do what it needs to do almost on autopilot and it'll eventually become easier and manageable, it's quite unsettling in your first few experiences though, being mentally prepared helps :-). Having luggage on the motorcycle exacerbates the issue dramatically, I've changed my setup multiple times due to the effect on the handing. If you want luggage, keep it very small near the centre of mass like a tank bag, or low for heavy items in pannier bags. The wind has a very strong effect on the motorcycle. There are lots of good videos on the internet. There is a channel called MotoJitsu and another one called Dan Dan The Fireman, both have videos on riding in the rain and strong wind. Tips like putting one leg out to increase drag on one side to counter a crosswind is something I do all the time.

Even if I do fail I will try again and possibly buy a bike and gear to practice on. One problem is how am I supposed to practice in a carpark if I cant legally drive to one lol :0 I have book a pre learners course for a little head start though. Yeah not a bad strategy, I managed to pass and get my learners on the first go, but don't stress if you don't, lots of people miss out on the first go. My missus didn't get hers due to some minor issues on the slow maneuver exercises in the test, but she passed on the next attempt. You'll be able to try to test again without paying again which is good. Plenty of people also fail for forgetting to do head checks on the test, you need to be very careful to always, always do a head check. Once you pass the motorcycle permit assessment day, you'll be issued a learners permit and then you can head to the shop and buy yourself a motorcycle, pop on the L-plates and start practicing for your check ride and final license assessment :-). Once I got my permit I was either up in the hills riding or in a car park practicing :-), it's great fun

I was riding bck from work on a Friday night n i git tailgated no gaps and someone cut me off at a roundabout and made me drop my bike😭. I was riding safely or as safe as i could. People huat dont care

I had a similar experience with a guy following very close to me at night, probably a meter behind. I pulled over and let him pass, pretty distressing as I also just got my licence. Later that evening I found his car at a McDonald's carpark while taking the dog for a walk. Had a chat with him and he explained he was in a rush to pick up an Uber order.... I reminded him that the distance between vehicles should be at least 2 seconds and not worth putting my life at risk. Also let him know if I see him doing that again I'll be going to the police. My advice is to get a GoPro on your helmet in case the worst happens and keep 3 seconds from the vehicle in front, motorcycles need additional room to stop safely. It's really unfortunate how people drive these days, it's changed a lot since I got my car licence about 15 years ago :-(

Hey bud, so it's a combination of things, weight, shape, power and vibration. My wife's Honda Super Cub (125cc) has been on the highway and kept up with traffic, same with my 250cc Honda CRF250L. To be honest though it's not very comfortable, the small engines buzz a lot at higher rpm and you tend to get pushed around by the wind a fair bit with the lighter bikes. A sport / cruiser / naked bike with 400cc and up would probably be best for longer stints on the highway :-), something with a parallel twin, v-twin, triple, or inline four cylinder would likely have less vibration too compared to our single cylinder machines.

@@stuz32 i see. A friend of mine just got her learners Permit and she wants to learn on a Honda CB125. Knowing her she likes to go places. Idk if that bike would be good for freeway riding. What do you reckon?

@@tezzdogger6073 So the CB125 is a great machine for learning how to ride, they use them at HART. If she was going for longer distances on the freeway though and if she wanted to keep to the same naked style, upright position, maybe a Honda CB400, Yamaha MT-07, Ducati Monster, Suzuki SV650, something like those models would be much more comfortable I think. Plenty of models out there :-) If your mate goes on Bike sales and filters for learner approved motorcycles above 400cc, and generally for something with more than one cylinder, it'll be much more comfortable for longer rides. For myself I got the 250cc dual sport as I was anticipating taking it camping and in the dirt a fair bit, turns out most of the riding I do is one the street and I've only taken it off road a few times, for my next bike I'll probably get a road bike, still happy with the CRF though, I wouldn't recommend for high speed, it really gets blown around in wind, bit like a sail on a ship ha ha, tall and light

On the figures you have for check ride you failed the braking. 2.54 is around 22klms per hour meaning you should of stopped by 3.4 mts.

I passed the check Ride and Failed the Licence Test Twice . Gonna change schools if I dont make it on the Third. Pisses me off !

​@@kimwelpinili5242 My bike was touching a white line at an intersection when the lights changed suddenly. Says I dont buffer enough . These guys make me so furious I cannot concentrate. And Ive been riding around for a year with no problems .

@@thetwogardens6048 I don't think they will fail you just because of that error. That's not a big deal. Maybe you stall the bike, over/under speeding, almost hit someone or forgetting signals. These are the major issues. I just finished mine today and it was pretty easy for only 30 mins ride on road.
