Do you really need a vibration damper for your phone mount? I will test it and tell you that. This video is a big test and review of motorcycle/bike mobile (cell) phone mounts and vibration dampeners, featuring both expensive and reasonably priced options like Chinese cheap locks and also top brands such as SP Connect, Quad Lock, Peak Design, and less known but brilliant Sincetop.
In addition to testing the phone mounts, this video also includes a very non-scientific but realistic examination of vibration dampeners. I will try to demonstrate how well each dampener performs in reducing vibrations and compare the effectiveness of different designs and brands. I will also answer the question if the vibration dampeners help or not really.
I will also talk about dedicated phone cases and universal adapters for each product. I will evaluate the ease of use, security and stability of these different options and compare the pros and cons of each.
The video aims to give you an in-depth look at the strengths and weaknesses of each product, helping to make an informed decision when purchasing a phone mount or vibration dampener for your motorcycle. So if you look for the answer to what is better: quad lock vs sp connect, or quad lock vs peak design, sp connect vs quad lock or any other cheap lock - I will try to help you with that.

Excellent video, the content, the presentation and your style are some of the best I've seen for these particular phone mounts. I appreciate that you mention the cheap chinese alternatives mount to the expensive Peak Design mount and how they are compatible with each other and also the parts from Quad Lock. I am considering the Peak Design mount and the Mous Intralock which uses an almost identical quick attach/release locking mechanism. Since you've done such an extensive research on phone mounts, do you have any experience with the Mous Intralock?

UPDATE: A viewer has pointed out that while the original Peak Design phone case is indeed waterproof, its partial nylon outer construction may allow water to accumulate there. This means that although the phone remains protected if the case gets wet and is placed in a pocket, it may transfer the moisture. Considering the case's high cost, I'm not certain it's worth purchasing. However, my overall opinion remains unchanged: the inexpensive Peak Design alternative with an attached phone is attractive, user-friendly, secure, and affordable. For iPhone users, I also can suggest the Sincetop mount or SP connect. In my view, the Quad Lock is unappealing and difficult to operate, but ultimately the decision is up to you. Cheers.

Hi, good video as always, however the test you did for dampers is not very representative, so you cannot assess their performance based on it. It all depends on resonance of optical system in your phone and natural frequencies of the bike you are using and transmissibility of road profile to the phone especially with potholes. So it would be actually much better to use phone accelerometer to measure what vibrations are going to the phone from the road (can be the old one, but with mass adjusted to the new one), so you can see what are the natural frequencies, and which frequencies are damped and also you can see how big G force do you have when you hit a pothole. Phyphox app should be capable to do that. Then the missing bit is the resonance frequencies of the optical system which you need to avoid, but maybe someone here will be able to give as some value. Still you can compare G force from pothole which may be the most harmful for optical system
@UncleLongbeard
@UncleLongbeard Жыл бұрын
Yes of course it would be better to do it in the lab, with the proper equipment. I don't agree that the app would give you any better info. App test would just give you the movement of the phone, while my test was intended to show in reality if the vibrations are passing through. And it did just that. It showed clearly that some or even most of the vibrations are passing to the phones. Do what you want with that information - it's up to you ;) PS. as far as I know it's not the potholes which kill the phone optics but certain frequencies of the vibrations. That's what I saw phone producers claim. For this very reason, you don't have vibration dampeners for bicycles, just for motorcycles. So you might look for more scientific tests and data, but I will tell you what - don't use your phone on the motorcycle if you value your camera. Or at least know the risk. Cheers.

I've found I don't really _need_ to see the screen. It turns out that having been happily married for 25 years in March, I'm quite naturally now just used to listening to a nice lady tell me what to do all the time. So, I just ride with my not very expensive Android phone in my shirt pocket, and the nice Google Directions Gal lets me know over the headphones where to turn and when with plenty of advance notice. When on longish tours I do have a little magnetic tank bag handy for easy-to-grab-from-the-saddle necessaries with a see-through pocket on top for a phone or "old school" folding map, but I usually ride without the tank bag up there. If you really want a decent GPS for a bike though, I've heard great things about the Beeline brand offerings. Some of the fancier new models of Royal Enfield come with a phone-linked navigation doodad called "The Tripper" (which oddly is slang in German for gonorrhea and just as popular). It seems Enfield rushed it into production though they hadn't quite shaken out all the bugs. Disconnections are frequent and one cannot yet even designate miles or feet be used instead of kilometers and meters. Accordingly, many "Tripper sufferers" have since happily upgraded to that Beeline system. Me? I don't need one. I'm still nursing along an elderly Bullet 500 single, basically an "engineering fossil" like your Graddaddy's bike. But you youngsters carry on! I'll get there eventually.
@UncleLongbeard
@UncleLongbeard Жыл бұрын
I was doing the same as you with a phone voice in my intercom plus on the bag, claiming it's the best option ;) Until I went to a few complicated junctions... I tested Beeline and it's OK, except at least 2x overpriced and not even giving you a speed camera warning. The tripper test is on my channel - that navi had a good potential but RE decided somehow not to invest in proper developers as the app is buggy and same as Beeline without speed camera warning and also no GPX files. So, yes, you can claim whatever you want, even that you prefer a horse over bloody 'new school' carriages, but it doesn't change the fact - that if you want a proper map navigation with good junction info, use of preplanned gpx files and speed camera warnings - there is nothing like the phone on your bars. Yes, it's not old school, yes, it's not the best looking thing on your bike but it is the best option for the money. And stop these bollocks about 'the youngsters' my friend. I rode many miles on my bullet 500, I currently ride BSA A10 from '59 and a few other old-school bikes. There is nothing wrong with even paper map sometimes but it's also good to have an exact location and some warning about the blue guys in the hood ;) And me myself being happily married for 23 years - I would say - it's still better to look at my wife, rather than listen to her on my bike ;) CHeers buddy

@@UncleLongbeard 23 years, and happy! I loved to hear that. I did 14 with my first and 9 with my second. Got fat and unhappy with both. So guess I have done 23 years too. Anyways, love the channel, and the entertainment you put out. Thank you for keeping it interesting. As for the phone attachment, I keep it in my pocket and go on memory. I did see today that Beeline, and find it for around 150 used to 175 new. Thinking for as much as I would use one, it might be worth a shot. And take it off easily and have it for both bikes. First I need to fix my back as scheduled to have a diskectomy on Feb 21. Been a while since I rode. About three months , lost most of my strength in left leg quads, so keeping up the bike with my left leg is unsure. Keep up with this stuff, love it as a 100 percent biker.

I personally wouldn't use anything but the quad lock mount as it is a complete system. You CAN put it on one handed (if you are dextrous), there is a sturdier metal Version (at more cost) and in addition, you can have USB charging, wireless charging, magnetic mounts, cases for popular phones, lots of different mount types and just about anything else you can think of.

It's not available in the UK as far as I can see but I don't think it's much different than the others here in terms of vibration dampening. What I suspect is that even your engine looks like it's shaking all over, it's rubber mounted so there is not many vibrations transferred to the handlebars while riding. That fact plus a bit of dampening in the phone mount - it's sorting the problem out... Or you are just a lucky bastard :D Cheers mate

Thank you for the review. But I believe the dampener test was not accurate as the point of the vibration was below your hand holding the mount. So if the vibration point will be above the hand you might get a different result.

But of course. it would pass even more vibrations. What would be the conclusion then? But that doesn't matter. The only conclusion in every case will be the same... It can still let some vibrations pass. Use it at your own risk if you want...

This isn't actually a fair test of the vibration dampening. If the phone is doing it's job really well, it will compensate for the vibrations to stabilize the video, making it look like the mount dampeners are doing their job. I'd like to see a test that just measures the vibration going into the mount and the vibrations at the phone mount end. I don't know how that's done and this video does shed some light on the subject. Personally, I mounted a dampening mount and a hard mount and just touched both while riding. I couldn't detect any difference in how they felt and therefore concluded that dampening mounts are a marketing gimmick. I suspect that somewhere around 80% dampening is required to be effective, not some indiscernible amount, but I'd like to have some actual hard data to back that up.
@UncleLongbeard
@UncleLongbeard Ай бұрын
The phone has not doing any stabilization as the phone I used for the test has no stabilisation whatsoever. Therefore it is showing how many of those vibrations are getting to the phone. So in fact those dampeners are helping in a VERY limited way.
