Another very nostalgic trip for me, many thanks. As I’ve mentioned before, my grandparents used to live in Askern, in fact you passed their road end near the level crossing. Their house used to shake when the coal trains passed by. My grandma used to hate the coalite plant as it produced black smuts which were most unwelcome on washing day. In fact the whole village was covered in a thick smelly smutty fog on the day the coal was processed. It’s sad to see the village looking a little run down now. In it’s “spa day”, it was quite up market. As well as posh hotels, it had rowing boats on the lake and frequent galas were held for the visitors. My uncle was the local barber and his shop was opposite the lake and my aunties wool shop was next door. I had many happy times when visiting Askern, sadly, it’s all in the past. Thanks again.

Thanks for the comments, glad it brought back some memories for you. Yes, it's a shame to see it now and compare it to the old photos with the lake in it's prime. Back in the 1970s I was a lorry driver in the area and the pit and Coalite plant were regularly calls delivering equipment, everywhere seemed dirty. Unfortunately time takes it toll but at least we've got our memories.

Great stream mate keep em coming . I worked on the JP many years ago at RAF Cosford .The JP was a great training aircraft .I later moved over to RAF Valley in sunny Wales . NOT. Your so lucky to live in such a beautiful area . Made for bikes . I love your Enfield very nice bike for riding though the countryside .As a child i spent every summer hols in Bridlington and Whitby. Elvington was a great place to go fishing at Elvington lakes.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. The JP gets an engine run up on occasions and the guy invites the villages to go and watch. We love Wales and are planning a few days over there this year. I think you often don't appreciate what's on your own doorstep. Till I started doing these rambles, I didn't really think my neck of the woods was upto much. I'll be including Elvington in a trip a bit later in the year, watch out for it. Cheers.

My memory of the J.P. was at RAF Leeming, that was a great place to fly from. If you were unsure of your location, all you had to do is look for the A1 and follow it back to base. The next step was a move RAF Valley where the “gnats” were used for advanced trading. Quite a step up in performance compared to the J.P. They were the forerunners to the “hawks” of course.

@@user-rf9me7xm1wsounds like you had a long and varied career with aircraft. I've driven past RAF Leeming dozens of times back in my lorry driving days. Always used to watch out for planes landing and taking off. Cheers.

Thanks for another interesting journey Rog, the landscape might be mostly flat but it's definitely not boring. I haven't been on the A1 for a few years now and I'm not missing it, it's getting so bad on the roads these days that canals might make a comeback as a quick way to transport goods 😃. Cheers, Mick

Cheers Mick. The more I do these rambles, the more I appreciate my local surroundings and my opinion of the landscape has changed from boring to that's pretty good😅. Yes maybe we should all be investing in narrow boats there's plenty of canals round here😂😂😂

Another good ride with some interesting info. I’ve never noticed that blue badge before in Wentbridge😱. Trundle lane to the canal at Kirkhouse green is part of one of my regular walking routes.
@old-n-Goldie
@old-n-Goldie 8 ай бұрын
Thanks Martin. The blue badge is actually tucked away slightly in a recess on the bridge so could be easily missed. I've lived near Fishlake for 36 years and only just realised where Trundle Lane goes. It's easy to overlook what's on your doorstep 😊 Cheers.

Marian FitzWalter of Little Dunmow in Essex seems to have a connection .
@old-n-Goldie
@old-n-Goldie 8 ай бұрын
Marian's character changed over time just as Robins did. In the earliest mentions of her, she's a shepherdess then later becomes of Nobel birth, probably to fit in with Robins elevation from yeoman to Earl. Certainly Marian Fitzwalters the most well known version of the story. It's been fascinating delving into this and the more you look the more complicated and confusing it becomes.

The mind boggles at that😮😮 Could be a pub that only serves jutter (some strange kind of NZ drink). Or maybe a metal bar sticking out (jutting) of something. Be fascinated to know what it actually is 😂

Now you have the Elvington airfield and museum and that was made famoius by a fellow bikes with the name of Allen Millyard . Who built his own bike to try to break a land speed record. He built his own bike using a V10 engine . Another area that i took my kids was Robin Hood bay but i dont know why its called that . Could you us me please ????
@old-n-Goldie
@old-n-Goldie 8 ай бұрын
Yes, saw Allens record runs at Elvington on TV on Henry Coles program. Saw his V10 Viper at Stafford show last year, very impressive. Robin Hoods Bay is a tricky one as no one is sure why it's called that but the name predates the Roin Hood tales. There is an old ballad that tells of Robin Hood going to Scarborough and defeating French pirates who attacked the coast. He's supposed to have then built homes for the poor with the treasure and this is Robin Hoods Bay. Trouble with that is that the ballad probably dates from the 17th century, long after the Village got its name. It's more likely that the tale was made up simply to give an interesting reason for the name.
