Excellent video. I rode my DR650 through the Flinders and it was a fantastic ride. Interesting comment from the blokes on the bigger adventure bikes. I did the same trip on my Himalayan about 12 months ago, I wasnt expecting you would take on the hilly section!! I was warned off it but gave it a go, managed to get through it with the original Pirelli Scorpions but struggled big time with traction in some hilly sections. Put knobbys on straight after the trip lol. Heading back up again soon to do it again on a DRZ400 and will try Mount Samuel also. Such and scenic place to ride.
@freewayproject6 ай бұрын
I did this trip in May 2023, so it sounds like at a similar time as you. Yes having a more aggressive tyre on will make a big difference especially after it has rained heavily as it loosens the surface up again, I had Dunlop 605D on the front and back. I too want to go back and do Mount Samuel and through the other sections that I miss out due to the weather and them closing all the dirt road. While I am there I am sure I'll do Skytrek again. I hope you have fun on your next trip.

Came home from the Flinders yesterday including 3 nights at Willow Springs. Top effort mate - such a spectacularly scenic loop of diverse landscapes. Couldn’t believe it was all one property! Would have loved to do Skytrek on my Himmy but due to breaking my foot a couple of weeks ago had to leave the bike at home and travel in my mate’s 4wd instead. 😢

sucks about your foot, yes it an amazing place as you said so diverse. Hopefully you get to ride it soon.

@@freewayproject just watched your video about the gear you use and take, and after my little mishap I’d definitely recommend a boot upgrade. I was wearing Gaerne All Terrains when I dropped the bike at walking speed, but unfortunately I didn’t react quick enough to shift my foot when the bike went down - crushed it between the engine casing and the ground. Happened at a place you now know quite well: Murray-sunset NP 🙂. Have now upgraded to Gaerne Enduro Fastbacks and also installed some SRC Moto crash bars in the hope that these gear improvements will save me from repeating this injury.

@@FourElevenAdventure I have TCR but not full Dirt bike boots but a lot better protection than the last boots I had. As riding something like the Flinders Ranges is rare on say 2 months on the road I need to be able to walk in boot a lot too. Everything I have is a compromise, from tent to clothing to bike etc.... it's hard to find the balance. It would be better to do one type of riding/Traveling at a time then I could have the right gear for the right job. I try my best and are super causes most of the time but I sure things will happen.

Looks like you had the a great bike for those conditions. Good low rpm power, adequate suspension, decent tires. Just hold the right wrist on and go for it. (As you did.)

Yes the bike got the job done, great fun on that bike on that track.

Very cool, but all these little grasses in the bush seemed to be arranged by someone with their hands 😂 they grow far away from each other, interesting

wow, well done. You and the Himi managed it all really well. I assume you were both just ace and there were no falls edited out😄

yes we made it through, the himi just kept tractoring along, I was just along for the ride. and amazingly I did stay up right some how, but definitely was being causes and taking my time.

Sounds like youre a natural on a bike... While im sure you found it a challenge id say most riders would find a ride like this extremely tricky.

9:49 Hey Joe, was that Fred Flintstones's Chevy? (Or its Aussie cousin Holden)😂
@freewayproject Жыл бұрын
The badge on it had rusted away. But Fred must’ve had mad four wheel driving skills to get that thing up there.

Next time you are over in the Flinders try Mt Samuel, better ride than Skytrek, also the PAR's ( Public Access routes) creek beds & great views

thanks mate, they mention there were a few other trails, I'll definitely check Mt Samuel out next time, and I'll definitely be going back.

Did you learn how to ride on these rough tracks through experience or did you do any type of off road training?
@freewayproject7 ай бұрын
Hi Greg, I got an enduro (dirt) motor bike first and got my basic skills up first (because I didn't want my lack of ability to stop me from exploring more difficult tracks), just by myself, so through experience. I gather off road training would be a good place to start to get the basic skills. I am not great on a dirt bike just competent enough to be able to get through rough tracks.

How long did your trip around oz take you. Looking at doing your trip. Xxx
@freewayproject5 ай бұрын
Not exactly sure, I think the second part took about 7 weeks that was across to WA and back. but I did a trip first out to western NSW, then through Victoria then around Tasmania back through the Victoria high country, the up the coast of NSW which was about 6 weeks. I do know of a couple groups one did it in 50 days and another did it in 30days but that was riding most the time with big days, you don't get to see a lot if trying to get it done in that time frame.

Red sand everywhere, rocks of all sizes, dry as a bone,,, and a motorbike to see it all... and some people want to go to Mars!? this looks like way more fun... by the way, a bit of a technical question: I don't ride on these conditions so what gear did you use to climb those steeper hills? Thank you for your videos, they are really good! Cheers from Brazil!
@freewayproject Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, yes it is a lot of fun to ride. by gear, if you mean the bikes gears I was either in 1st or second gear. the only thing on the bike that was not stock was the tyres which were Dunlop 605D's more like dirt bike tires.

yes, I meant the bike gears... thanks for sharing! All the best, Joe!

@@freewayproject Yep, perfect way to travel, no tension, no expecations, just flow. Himalayan perfect for that, someone that wanted to race and flog it would destroy the bike one day. Respect the bike and use it as intended it will last. Rode and Enfield over Himalayas even in the middle of solitude I knew I could rely on it.
