Motorcycle Sidecar Dog Training Turns Into Hank's Fun Day!

3 of our dogs were in love with sidecar riding. As bigger the dog as more difficult it is for them to stay inside the tub when you pass through bends or are forced to evade an obstacle. When you hook up the leash(es) at the back or neck the dog can get flipped around or out the tub and hurt himself badly. So it is best you mount an anchour point at the lower inner side of the seat and use a short leash with a steel hitch (zamack swivels tend to break easily)(the Ural tub has a triple layer of sheet metal right where both seat cushions met)

Thank you. The harness is made by Kong. It doesn't have a model listed on it. I purchased it at Pet Supplies Plus a few years ago.

I appreciate your comments! I love Urals. Best of luck with yours. You'll have a blast. They are a different beast to ride, though. Take it easy at first. The sidecar on my setup is actually from a 2002 Ural. And normally, I do wear all the gear. Guilty in this instance, though.

No worries & no judgement. I have just seen way too many nasty injuries that could have been lessened with protective riding gear. I think it’s great that we can take our 4 legged kids with us.

Great video. I recently acquired a Ural and noticed that you have a Ural tub. For your dogs, do you remove the seat? We have a dog about the same size as yours (70-75lbs) and I got him in the side car but it seems tight in there for him. Any info is appreciated !

Thank you for the kind words. Good to hear that you got a Ural. I love those bikes! Yes, I did put a 2001 Ural sidecar on this set up. The Ural sidecars are great for dogs because they are easy to get in and out of. To make room for my 90 pound Newfoundland / Poodle mix, I took out the seat bottom and the Ural windscreen. I then cut a mattress topper to the shape of the Sidecar floor and also a sleeping bag pad which I cut to the same shape and put them down on the bottom. I then put a blanket or towel over those and he seems comfortable. I am experimenting with ways to add more wind protection for him. The Ural windscreen angles too far into the cockpit for the way he sits. I mounted a shorter windscreen to the front rack, but it still seems to cause wind turbulence. Love this bike! The sidecar is from an old Ural. Their side cars are not sold separately. I found it at a dealer who was selling it because the bike had a blown engine. I had a professional sidecar installer build and attach a sub frame to the bike for the sidecar. You might be able to find a Ural on the used market. Otherwise, DMC of Texas makes and sells a similar sidecar.

Also wanted to mention that in addition to the goggles, RexSpecs makes ear protection for dogs. I don't have those, but do use a human neck warmer to cover his ears so they don't flap around in the wind. www.rexspecs.com/

The leashes I used for the straps were made by Coastal and the harness is a Kong brand. If those specific types are not available, I would just shop for the heaviest duty products you can find.

I would be happy to help you, but I'd need to know more about your situation. Piloting a sidecar motorcycle is very different than riding a standard motorcycle. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who had a sidecar motorcycle. He let me ride it before I made a purchase. This Internet forum is an excellent place for information about motorcycle sidesidecars. Not sure where you are located, but there are also a lot of good used side car motorcycles for sale on this site. www.advrider.com/f/forums/hacks.56/ There are many very experienced sidecar enthusiasts on this forum and they are extremely helpful. @@wheelstrailsandtails3709 well for us it’s real simple. I haven’t been on a bike in about 20 years her and probably about 15. Of course she was a sport bike rider I’ve always been a cruiser rider. So we’ve got to get back into it first, take the courses that I think are good refreshers. And then of course we would be starting from the beginning. So if they’re a good videos that teach step-by-step how to get your dog used to doing this that would be great. Obviously I figure riding with a sidecar would be different as I know he would California require special licensing as well.
