Most of my 400+ mile trips have been in groups, but I have done a lot solo too. I love riding in groups, BUT I also enjoy the complete and utter FREEDOM of long solo bike trips. If I want to change my direction, I do it. If I want to stop and look at a waterfall, I do it. No herding the group to do something different, no convincing people to turn around to go see something interesting we rode by. Solo bike trips can be invigorating, in my honest opinion. 😎
@BoDean52
@BoDean52 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree. I do prefer if I’m gonna do long trips, more or less three bikes, because of the reason, you said, herding makes it less enjoyable.

I remember a trip that I took to Daytona once by myself on a Suzuki Intruder back in the 90's for Bike week. Had a hell of a time and have some great memories. Made some new friends and heard some great stories. Riding around the Gulf cost to Destin then to Fort Walton Beach where my uncle lived. I'll always have that memory. I'm 69 now and I am planning another ride to Orange beach this summer.

My wife doesn't ride and has no interest in motorcycles, however, she encourages me to enjoy my passion. I have taken multiple trips by myself. I have ridden and camped the Blue Ridge Parkway end to end. I have made a few one and two night moto-camping trips to sections of the Parkway. This spring I intend on doing the Natchez Trace Parkway from Natchez, MS to Nashville, TN. I also intend on making a trip to the Badlands in SD, just not during Sturgis week. I am retired, so that helps. I too wanted to go hide in the mountains but as we got closer to retirement my wife's health issues dictated that we needed to stay close to doctors and medical facilities. I encourage folks to take advantage of your time NOW and not put off until "someday" when you retire because you never know what "someday" holds for you. Great content!

I haven’t done a solo overnighter, yet. I’ve been on a few overnight trips with others, with more planned this year. I was set to do a weekend trip solo, but a good friend joined me. I’m glad he did…we had a great time. I’m finding that the older I get, the better I can relate to Clint Eastwood’s character in Gran Torino. I used to be a people person, but people ruined it for me.

Thanks for the video BoDean. Yes I have taken solo motorcycle trips and I love it. Its just me, the bike and the road. I get to run through all my thoughts and just think. I love to see the sunrise and the sunsets. I love the friends and groups but there are times I just want to be on the road by myself. About the retirement , you know we moved from the hustle of Nashville to SE Ga. The nearest town is 8 miles and nothing there. Our shopping is 35 miles away and we are really ok with that. Thanks for the video I have do the solo over night ride I went from Peoria IL up to Winona MI to the Midwest Motorcycle Rally and it was great no body to deal with I could explore the area as I wanted. I had did the rally with a buddy a few years ago and it was great time also. For me I like to travel alone, with my job I am by myself all day. As far as people and age I am going on 65 as long as I am around like minded people, bike people it’s great other than that not so much anymore. Your barber is why you need to live every day to it’s fullest you just don’t know what’s in the future. I don't normally travel with other folks. My wife has come along a handful of times, but she isn't into riding like I am, and the few folks I do ride with are a few states away. I consider it a mental reset. Time with my thoughts to get my head straight and come back to life refreshed. I have gone to visit family, a few ironbutts, and even done trips just to say I've been somewhere. Every time I end up appreciating the fact I got to choose the adventure my way. I have never regretted taking a solo trip, actually I look forward to them.

My favorite is riding two-up with my wife. We always have a great time, especially multi-day trips. And we typically blah blah blah the entire time. Next preference is riding truly solo. I listen to music and enjoy the ride and the scenery. That’s where I find my Zen moments these days. I’ll very occasionally ride with others, but that’s a quite distant third preference.

I’ve done a couple of long rides by myself. One was from Baltimore to Tennessee of about 750 miles but that mainly was to get my bike back home for the winter when I was stationed in Baltimore. So that trip was mainly just hauling butt and nothing pleasurable about it except that I was on my bike. Another was a trip from Tennessee to East Texas of about a 650 mile ride to see an old buddy for a couple of days. My most pleasurable rides are with old Army buddies when we are doing a 4-5 day ride then kicking back at night to have a couple or three cold adult beverages and try to outlie each other about our time together in the Army. I enjoy solo rides and more than half of my miles are solo rides. (the older you get the more other people seem to get on your nerves) On longer 10-14 day road trips it is nicer to ride with a buddy. It seems to be generally safer having someone with you and nice if you have a breakdown. On one of our trips my friend blew the rear tire on his Heritage out in the middle of nowhere. None of the dealerships could come get the bike. I ended up looking on my cell and found a U-haul dealer outside a little farm town about 40 miles away. I rode my bike there and picked up a 1 ton cube van. Drove back and loaded my buddy's bike, drove 125 miles to drop him and his bike at a dealership that would change the tire and tube right away. Then I drove all the way back to the U-haul to drop off the truck, pick up my bike and then rode to a agreed meeting point where we could continue on our trip. Ended up being a rather long and expensive day..

Me and my wife take 2 vacations a year. 1 vacation is decided by both and that’s the one we go together on. The other vacation we take separately. She goes her way and I go my way. They may or may not be on motorcycles. 2 years ago she went to Colorado on her CanAm Spyder and I went to key west. By the way we are in ohio. Well over 3000 miles. We loved it. We always have fun together but we also believe we need time away from each other. We have been doing this for over 6 years now. Our biggest rule on separate vacations….There are no rules as long as it doesn’t interfere with the others vacation.

I do most of my riding with a buddy, We are pretty far apart age wise, I am 38, he is 63. We have known each other since I was born, and we are very much alike in what we choose, how we ride, how we like to travel. Its been a great thing for me to get to have him around, learn from his experiences and split costs when possible. I have only been riding since 2012. My first longer trip was in 2014 by myself from Western Iowa to Columbus, OH. I have a few times since then taken off on my own, and its very relaxing and a little easier to maneuver things if needed. I have a few years (hopefully many) of riding with a person that is basically an older me. I try to take advantage of those trips when possible. My girlfriend is not into taking trips, at least yet, so If I do go off without my buddy, its solo.

It’s great to have a nice riding buddy like that and isn’t it funny how age really doesn’t matter especially when you’re talking about motorcycles. Hope you get many many more of those and enjoy the ride.

When you retire, you want to be near medical facilities! I left 22 acres with no neighbors to a 100x75’ lot with neighbors everywhere! The Harley is my escape!!!I want to go visit my mom and brother this year solo. It would be about 1,100 miles round trip. Ever since I found out how much my wife pays for hair cuts, I’ve always paid $20 with tip for a haircut.

@@BoDean52 8 years ago my best friend took a 10-day trip from South FL to Las Vegas. Slept in the dirt all but one day. We all have things we want to do. AKA "Bucket List" after that trip I was like "Fuck It List" everything I can. We drove a 1967 Chevell Super Sport. It changed my life, sense then I have yet to stop knocking things off my FIL. Good luck my friend. Get out and go.

I don’t think it’s we don’t like people. We just like being near people we like. We are looking for acreage out of town. I do like it when Wendy goes with me. If I was riding the Goldwing she would go with me to Alaska, then fly home. I enjoying doing 3-4 day trips solo. I ride hard and that’s all I do. Ride. I am some one that at night I can walk into the local saloon after I put the horse up sit at the bar eat some food order a beer and talk to who ever is sitting there. I know would be the same. Nothing more freeing than picking a direction and just going and stopping when you want.

Perfectly normal to not like people when you get older after all you've been dealing with them for years. The type of trips your talking about I do all the time it's great. No people. I'm getting that new bike itch again that comes around every couple years. I'm thinking about something a little more exciting than my ultra like the big boy sport touring kawasaki concourse 14. Oh well what are you going to do. Take care

It’s not that we like people less. It’s that we don’t tolerate stupidity, selfishness, or drama. Or maybe that is just me. Are you sure we are not siblings? As much as I love people, the trip I am planning to take cross country… I’m planning to go solo for just these reasons. Did that in the US and loved the experience. I connected with people along the way, but having solo miles was amazing too. Know what is important and embrace it. Question… when this aired and you Bride heard you say ‘yes King’… did you have to duck?

However, when riding “2 up”, my wife and I tent to “wander” on our way to “Point A, to Point B”. 😂👍 Either way, as long as your riding; thats all that matters. 👍💯 If you’re heading East, stop by my cabin. I’ve taken many solo motorcycle trips over the years. Most of the time it was because I couldn’t find anyone who had the desire and/or vacation time to go with me. My wife enjoys day trips but not so much overnighters or longer trips. So it was either stay home or go solo. I enjoyed most of my solo trips though sometimes they got a bit lonely. On the flip side though, I’ve been on trips with other guys and ended up wishing I was solo! I almost always camp on my solo motorcycle trips and I think that helps as sitting by a campfire with an adult beverage and a cigar is far more enjoyable, for me, than sitting alone in a hotel room.

For the last 2 year or so I've been mulling this very thing. I too talked to my wife about a solo ride to the U.P. She is very supportive of my riding. ( I'm from Pinckney. Right in Hell Mi.) I have wanted to do this for many years and I think this summer is the year. I think Tahquamenon Falls will be the goal. I can't wait. I think every rider should go on at least one solo ride that is more then just a single day.

Quoting an old Peanuts comic strip: "I love mankind; it's people I can't stand!" I usually ride alone. For some reason, when I ride in groups (small with friends), I get nominated to lead. I have this strange power to turn a nice day into more or less disaster, and then have to listen to all the bitching. If you have time sensitive plans after the ride, hahaha, not happening! Yet, next time I get nominated to lead again. Their excuse, when I lead it's never boring.
