Join us as we head for our annual week-long motorcycle tour. Over seven days, we visited many incredible Irish roads and accompanying scenery.
On day one, we left Sussex to head to Bangor in north Wales stopping at the Baffle Haus in Pontypool for lunch - a must-stop for any motorcyclist in the region (www.baffleculture.com) before an overnight stop at the The Menai Hotel & Bar in Bangor, which is within easy reach of Holyhead for the next day's Dublin Swift departure.
On day two, we head to Holyhead for our mid-morning departure to Dublin. We took the Dublin Swift for an extra tenner, which made swift work crossing the Irish Sea in just over two hours.
On our arrival and speeding through customs, we cut our way through Dublin traffic - be warned, Ireland's traffic light system is tediously slow. In hindsight, we should have taken the toll road around the city's outskirts. Soon, on the motorways, we were halfway across Ireland in no time before deciding to take the R roads towards our accommodation for two nights in Galway.
Meeting others in another hotel just down the road, we took a taxi into Galway, visiting Monroes for live music and a few pints of Guinness.
Day three would be a 200-odd mile run, taking in some spectacular roads and scenery, stopping at Clifden for lunch. En route to Westport and Newport, we would start to turn south back to Galway, passing Lough Mask on the way back to Galway and another visit to Monroes for live music.
Day four would point our motorcycles south, passing by the Cliffs of Moher and crossing the river Shannon, which we had pre-booked our tickets for the one-way crossing as we headed to our next night's accommodation in Killarney. What a night that was - The Killarney Grand is a must.
The best of the riding was to come on day five, heading up through The Dunloe Gap, which we had to ourselves. Followed later with the Healy Pass. Stopping at Glengarrif for lunch, our superb ride would continue cutting along the bays, such as Tragumna Beach, that cut into the coastline. With time ticking, we headed to Cork for another night's stopover.
We headed from Cork to Dublin, hoping to reach the city mid-afternoon to enjoy a few pints of Guinness. Apart from mile-munching motorways, we veered off to ride the Copper Coast Drive via Bunmahon, passing Waterford, stopping for lunch at Inch, as we then turned off at Arklow to experience the roads of the Wicklow Mountains National Park - its expanse is just incredible.
After securely parking motorcycles in the centre of Dublin at our accommodation, it was then a brief twenty-minute walk to enjoy live music and pints of Guinness to celebrate the end of a wonderful few days in the Emerald Isle at the famous Temple Bar.
Up at 4.30am, we prepared ourselves for the push back home to Sussex. Just over two hours after departing Dublin, we were running through a very wet Wales drying up as we crossed the border into England. We hit the motorways to cut time, but it was still a long day getting home. Still, not everyone can say they rode back to the south coast of England from Dublin in one day.

Thank you for your comment. You're welcome. Yes, editing can certainly be time-consuming, but there was a lot of ground to cover; at least it provides an honest view of what any touring motorcyclist is likely to experience, including Ireland's changeable weather.

Excellent video, great tunes and well edited! My wife and I are just planning our first ever trip to Ireland on the bikes in a couple of months and having watched this I can't wait now. I've only just got some action cameras so I hope my video comes out as good as yours.

Hi, @GreyBiker99, Thanks so much for your kind comment on my motorcycle touring video! I'm glad you enjoyed the tunes, editing, and of course, the footage of Ireland on two wheels. That's amazing news about your upcoming trip with your wife - Ireland is an incredible place to explore by motorcycle. I am so pleased to hear that my video helped fuel your excitement. Embrace the journey and enjoy the moment, taking in the sights and sounds and creating memories together. The best videos are often the ones that capture the genuine experience. Some action cameras can do wonders these days - stability is key. I record at 2160p and 60fps for smooth capturing on my GoPros but it doesn't half take a lot of memory. Ireland is full of friendly people, breathtaking scenery, and winding roads perfect for motorcycles. I'm sure you'll have an amazing time, just as we did! Safe travels and happy riding!

Hi johnnycahill, thank you for your comment and for becoming a subscriber. 🙌🏻 It's appreciated. 👍🏼 Editing is very time-consuming but the results as worth it. Ireland is amazing. I very much hope to go back to explore more. As a first visit, we only had a few days, so it was a recce run, hotel hopping as we go. Next time we head to Dublin, I'll try and pop in for a brew! ☕️ I hope to create more touring videos, but work and family commitments are making it a tad challenging. Usually, we plan ahead, but this year, it might be more spontaneous. I just have to see how things go.

Excellent video..great filming too 👌. Enjoyed the write up and all the trip info also. I live in West Sussex, but head back to Ireland every year on the bike..I will never tire of exploring the Emerald Isle, especially the peninsulas of the West Coast. Further north Donegal is a pretty fab place to ride. Thanks for sharing the trip!! Cheers Steve

Thanks so much for the kind words, and you found the trip info helpful. It's always great to hear from fellow West Sussex bikers, especially those with a shared love for exploring the Emerald Isle on two wheels. I couldn't agree more about Ireland's magic - it's a place that just keeps on giving. Many roads were made for motorcycles! It sounds like you've got some serious Irish biking experience under your belt - any hidden gems or favourite routes you'd be willing to share? I'm always looking for new excuses to head back over the Irish Sea. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

@o75uk Glad you want to explore Ireland some more..so many great places to ride and explore! I've ridden in Central America, all over Europe etc, but Ireland is my go to these days. Once you start properly exploring all the peninsulas and lesser known roads it's very time consuming...but that's a good excuse to return! For instance, most people get off the ferry at Rosslare and bomb down the N25 to the West in about 4 hours..I follow the coast, Passage East ferry, along the Copper Coast, on to Cobh and the Passage West ferry and then the fab R600 road to Clonakilty, then onto Skibereen. Let me know if you go again and what area and I may know some good routes! Cheers Steve

Hi saggo69, thank you for your comment. It means a lot when I receive messages such as yours. Glad you liked my video. You must be an advanced rider if you recognised the road positioning. It may not always be perfect, but grateful for the additional training I received several years back from Bikesafe and DVSA’s Enhanced Rider Scheme; teaches you more than DAS. I try and apply it with every ride.👍🏻

Us guys with Advanced motorcycle training stick out like sore thumbs. I noticed your positioning within the first couple of minutes. My trouble is, whilst watching the videos, I spend most of the time analysing riders' positioning, etc, instead of watching the scenery, force of habit! Keep up the good work.

being from here I never found Ireland to scenic its mostly barren landscapes or stuck on roads with wild hedge rows and you cant see anything. There are some nice spots here and there especially along the coast. but id rather the continent myself. nice video
@o75uk
@o75uk 9 ай бұрын
Hi Edd. Thanks for your comment. Compared to Sussex, you're luckier than I, and I imagine most parts are within easy reach, too. The barren landscapes make touring in Ireland different to other parts of Europe. If anything, I really appreciated it - especially north of Galway. The Wicklow Mountains aren't anything like I've seen before - a wide expanse of upland heaths which goes far beyond what my eye can see. It all adds to the delightful Irish flavour. The southwest is certainly intriguing, and yes, I was a little disappointed we didn't have more time to explore coastal routes. Still, for me, that's a good enough excuse to visit again and wash down each day with a Guinness or two.

Exactly, I've ridden in West Sussex, Surrey etc. Some great roads around south downs, but traffic and speed cameras can be a pain. You've got the weather on us in Ireland however. Ireland's scenery is very varied @@o75uk

Great video love the qr codes for Locations thanks for the video few quations , What month of the year you were there I am planning to go with a group in June hoping for good weather , also you notice a lot of speed vans or speed camaras to be aware of ?
@o75uk
@o75uk 2 ай бұрын
Hi @salsadurauk, thanks for your comment. It's appreciated. I'm just doing things I hope to see from other touring vids, like ‘great roads, but where the hell are you?’ We rode in late June. The weather was a little hit and miss; glorious sun one minute, turn a corner, and you could be drowned the next. The weather in Ireland is weird. The video offers realistic expectations. That said, our Irish friends said they had six weeks of glorious weather before we arrived, which, for them, was unusual. Expect showers. As for speed cameras, we saw one mobile unit on a motorway, shown in the video. Other than that, no. But be warned; minor roads can be acutely bumpy in places. Be reluctant to open the throttle as corners carrying an accute bump could launch you into a hedge, as it nearly did to me a few times. Enjoy, and ride safe.

Hi @alistairnicholson1090, Thanks for your comment on my Ireland tour video. I'm glad you enjoyed the footage and are planning your own trip! In our opinion, Dunloe Gap is a must-ride and one of our highlights. Staying in Killarney the night before meant we could ride early before all the tourists descended. I am sure you won't regret it, but it is something to savour. Better still, if you get a little head start on your day. The weather would most certainly help.
