First impressions and a thorough dirt test of the 2021 Honda CRF300 Rally by Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV (MAD TV).
First impressions of the bike were gained whilst riding it for Andrew Clubb, editor of Australian Adventure Bike Magazine, who was photographing it for the latest edition of the magazine.
The following day I took the bike on a 400 kilometre loop of Freeway, Blacktop and twin track to test its adventure credentials.
MAD TV is renown for conducting thorough reviews of adventure motorcycles. Recent reviews include the 2020 Husqvarna 701 LR, 2020 KTM 790 Adventure R, 2020 KTM390 Adventure.

Clubby nailed it, a 500 single, as light and strongly built as possible, with a big tank and rally fairing and minimal electronics is what so many of us all want. I've got the CRF250L and the T7, and at 60kg the wee Honda suspension does me fine. It was like listening to myself at times when you were describing the standing position, it is horrible (I'm 6ft). I'd like to somehow get slightly lower pegs, and higher bars, but without feeling like it might end up like sort of custom motorcycle ape hangers. If the wee Honda was just a bit more capable on eating up road miles, I'd have it as my only bike, as the weight of the T7, and the thought of lifting it (knackered shoulder here) , makes me ride like a new rider a lot of the time, nervous (much as I love the T7) Great summary of the 300 rally, and from my limited knowledge of very similar, absolutely spot on. Nice one lads. Orra best from Scotland, where we wouldn't mind a big mile muncher, same as you Aussies and Americans ;)

Thanks for another cracking MAD review. Totally agree with the closing comments on the need for a real world CRF450/500L....with a service schedule and at a price point that 'normal' riders can live with. When the CRF450L came onto the market here in the UK, my local dealer despaired over Honda's missed opportunity to plug a gap in the market. We can only hope that someone in Honda's marketing team watches MAD TV !

Coz they can't sell them? Much as it hurts to admit it, we're an incredibly niche market. What'd the 450L sell like, 4-500 units the last year in Oz? The profit on that is hardly worth filling out the import paperwork for. It's amazing we have as many models on sale in Oz as we do given the miniscule sales figures.

Thank you Dave for such a great review. I live in Washington state in the US and I am still waiting for my CRF300L Rally to get here. If the supply Chain ever gets moving again Honda is going to have a hard time keeping these bikes in stock. I started riding again in 2012 after not having ridden for about 40 years. I bought a Honda CRF230L that I still have but also bought a NC700X in 2013 to ride as a adventure bike but it is to heavy for this 70 year old guy to pick up so I think the Rally is going to work prefect for me if it ever comes in. I've ridden nothing but 250-350 cc dual sport thumpers since 1975. All that time, I've wanted a 350-400 cc adventure bike. We're finally getting some small displacement ADV bikes, but they're not quite ticking all of the boxes. Honda has the low cost 300CRF dual sport, and good on them for that. For the Rally version, they should have a 20L or larger fuel tank, upgraded rear suspension and add a stock luggage rack. Yes, it'll run up the cost, but t's cheaper to buy that stuff from the factory, rather than adding it later, or worse, buying the factory parts and throwing them in the bin to add the needed aftermarket parts. Aesthetics are subjective but I'd have liked a color such as black or gray instead of flaming Honda red. Absolutely brilliant review. You guys always do a great job. Thanks!

Great review Guys. Please don't leave out the South African market out of the equation as our huge adventure bike market can very easily accommodate a dual sport like this. Honda has a big footprint in RSA as well as up into the rest of Africa. A well known Dutch KZbinr Itchy Boots recently did big miles in SA, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe on a 250L. Noraly ended the tour by doing a desert rally on it i the Kalahari and then donated her bike to a motorcycle museum near Cape Town and went back home to buy a CRF300 Rally to resume her South American to Alaska tour interrupted early 2020 by the pandemic. With some simple mods & luggage her bike is very nicely kitted out.

Great compromise and budget bike, but as there’s no 450 or 500 it’s a good choice, I’ve just ridden the 250 rally from U.K. to Cape Town and the extra 50 cc would have come in handy on the blacktop and fast dirt, hyperpro suspension a camel tank, stronger bars and lifted, as always great filming

Every rider I know is asking the same question you guys are, Why not a 450 ? I bought a CB500x new for the same price as this CRF Rally because I have to do a lot of black top K's, but I like dirt roads and forestry trails on it as well. It's a heavier bike , but compromises have to be made for long distance comfort. If any bike manufacturers are listening, very few of us are 6'4" gods of enduro, we like to get our feet on the ground occasionally. So not too tall, a softly tuned 450 - 500 single, comfortable seat, good fuel capacity, luggage carrying ability.

Thank you for the review. Decided to buy a bike last week after filling up my GX460 overlander (Fancy Prado)for the second time. Found a Rally after calling over 10 dealerships the next state over and rode it home the next day. Couldn't be happier even at 6'3" 250lbs. One week of fill ups with my Lexus costs more than the payments and insurance on the Rally. 13mpg vs 73mpg will have it pay itself off in a year or two with the way things are going with fuel prices. It was a practical decision, and after finding out the WR250R was discontinued I figured I'd be settling for the Rally, but it's actually perfect for my commute and needs. Just to add to the conversation at the end, we in europe would love a 400/450cc version of this with the fairings and screen and everything on the 300 rally. Kawasaki did it in the sport bike world with the ninja 400. Honda should do with with a CRF400/450 Rally. It's the ideal adventure bike with room to grow for new riders and that little bit of extra power for experienced riders.

Dave! This is hands down the best review on the Rally I've seen. You've nailed every aspect. It is very close to being one of the best all-rounders on the market in the small capacity bikes. I have the 250 version but spent the money on the suspension and it's a totally different (very capable) off-roader. I'd love it If you could get your hands on a AJP PR7 to do a test on, as it seems to have what the CRF rally doesn't. Great job!

Brilliant review as always. Couldn't agree more with Clubby + the 450/500 absolutely does work and is wanted in Europe. Basically, the whole world is waiting for someone, anyone to give us a 450/500 engine in the CRF Rally package BUT with decent adjustable suspension. Preferably from Honda and Yamaha. I reckon the sweet spot for such a package would be £8,500-£9,000 / AUD15,000-16,000 / USD12,000-12,500.

Y’ know, many (perhaps most) small capacity bikes are sold with suspension set ups for the light, 65kg rider. Heavier riders then need to spend $$$ to change it. Then you need to spend more on all the other bits and pieces to make it off-road worthy - that’s what the manufacturers make us do. I understand that a ROAD bike should be sold with road-spec parts, but surely a dual sport should be sold with real dual sport parts as standard! Let’s return to the first point: suspension for skinny kids. The big manufacturers claim they are fighting and competing for sales but they are NOT offing us what we want or even what we need! If these massive companies want to shift more bikes off the showroom floors, then the one that sells bikes with a choice of spring to suit the rider (no difference in cost), will become the winner, right? I think we’ve been dictated to for far too long. It’s time that the consumer started making some demands - sell us a dual sport bike that is dual sport ready straight off the showroom floor, at a competitive price, or stick your ‘build your own bike kit’ up your whattsit

For "short leggers" who don't mind lower ride height being lowered, the CRF250L (on the 13-20 model years) has a shorter travel and thicker spring. Gives a firmer spring for under 85/90KG ride weight, or as Dave says, just get the right spring for your weight. If you are over 100KG you WILL need this for moderate speed off road...for standard gravel/dirt roads or if your riding style is steady, don’t bother just crank preload up to max and live with it. Also adding 15 weight oil to front forks stiffens them a little for about $20!
