dirt vs street DRZ400 vs crf300 isn't it gearing that determines street-ability
@sean72122 күн бұрын
I have ridden and raced motorcycles for over 40 years, the Honda 300l, while not fast is an incredible motorcycle. I rode the entire Nevada BDR solo and did not need for anymore. I did change the suspension to race tech which was a night and day difference. I have surprised quite a few riders on bigger bikes, KTM 501's, with how capable the bike was and had no problems keeping up. Deleting smog gear and new exhaust lost a bunch of pounds and made the engine more " Open " feeling. I am excited about the new DRZ4S and may have to add one to the stable.

50 years of riding experience here. I own a BMW F800 GS and was wanting something light to explore the backroads and gravel roads. I bought the 300 Rally knowing the suspension was low quality. I just didn’t know how bad it was. I ordered a new rear shock and spring within days. Now it’s pretty good. I’m still on the stock front suspension and I can bottom it out frequently when I start picking up the pace, but it would rather go slower than that anyway. Some people complain about the seat not being comfortable. It’s like sitting on a sofa compared to a dirt bike, so it’s all in your perspective. It’s a smooth engine, very good wind protection, the bar for the rally fairing is great to mount my GPS to. It is comfortable and capable and the most boring bike I’ve ever owned. If you want a relaxing, comfortable, easy to ride, low maintenance, reliable, comfortable, inexpensive bike to own and maintain, I highly recommend it. For me the worst thing about it is that it needs a few more horsepower for the highway. It is perfectly happy running 65 MPH, but above that, I’d much rather be on a bigger bike. Just my opinion from someone who’s owned all kinds of bikes from trials, dirt bikes, sport bikes and now a BMW R1250 GSA. Just because it’s a great beginner bike, doesn’t mean it’s not for experienced riders.

Got my Rally in Jan as a retirement gift. Last time I rode a cycle it was a street cruiser and gas was $1/gal. I use the Rally for relaxed rides on gravel and 2 tracks. Highway capability is sufficient. I use 6’th gear exclusivey for overdrive on flat highways. No interstates for me. The larger Rally gas tank is a big plus. All day riding unencumbered by the thought process. I replaced the rear spring and shock right away, and I lost 20+ pounds after retiring. Both made the Rally more enjoyable. Have not done anything inside the forks. If you’re new to riding single or 2 tracks I strongly recommend the SCRmoto skid plate and crash bar kit. I know from experience on wet muddy clay trails during a downpour that Rally plastic is very vulnerable to low speed low angle slide crashes. My buddy got a KLX300 when I got my Rally. The KLX300 has a much better stock suspension and a 5 speed transmission. I thought hard about getting a KLX300 but the smaller gas tank and shorter range was a deal-breaker for me.

If anyone is wondering to get the 250 vs 300. I was wanting to get a 300 but was able to pickup a CRF250Rally, which is my first bike for really cheap. Came with ohlins suspension, 550 tune, rhk bars, barkbusters, pivot pegs, Delkavich slip (pretty much everything done). From the money saved from not getting a 300, I was able to get some really good riding gear. There are a few videos out there showing that there isn't much of a performance difference. I agree with Ben about the fairings, they are annoying to work on. I have since cut them, and this helps to keep the bike running cooler, and make cleaning and maintenance much easier.

I love mine. Not quite a 50cc bump from the 250l to the 300l. It's only a 37cc difference from the 249cc engine of the 250l to the 286cc engine of the 300l. I never rode a 250l, but I can imagine the 300l is quite a difference from the 250l. If Honda had made it a true 300cc engine, I think there would probably be far fewer "gutless on the highway" complaints from some people.

My dad started me on aid 80's Xr100 when i was 10 (25 now), when i was 14 i got a 06 crf230f, when i was 18 i got his 04 yz250f. Last spring i had planned a big wandering road trip from Manitoba through the west half of the states, Canada and Alaska. I had all the camping gear already for my truck, so i knew i didnt want to travel like Itchy Boots, so i was on the hunt for the right bike, wanted a dual sport to be able to do dirt and street. Was looking at a wr250r in my area, that one sold, so i found a 250L. Upgraded the fork and shock on it after wrecking a set of seals bottoming it out 6 times of quite small jumps, lol. Now after riding it every day this past summer i finally was ready for a different bike as i found the limits of that little honda. I picked up a KTM 500 excf in mid october. Did get a few rides in before we had snow here, so happy i upgraded. As awesome and flawless running as that honda was (put 8500 kms on in 2 summers), im happy i have more power now.

I think it’s going to be perfect for me once I get the Big Bore kit installed. I don’t do a lot of Hwy riding anyway, even though it will go 80mph now, I’ll get a little more top speed with the big bore. It’s going to be the low end torque that’s going to make it that much more enjoyable. It’s a perfect solution for me, because I just don’t want anything heavier for the type of off roading I do.

Everything you mentionned about the Rally is very true, especially the suspension. I own a '22 Rally and I've been riding it since the past two years. I have over 25k miles on it and it's as much fun as it was in the beginning. Did three BDRs: Mid-Atlantic, Wyoming and Colorado, all of them from Montreal and back. More comfortable on the highway than people would think. I plan to swap the stock rear shock with the K-Tech Shock Absorber Razor-R Lite this winter and also change the front fork spring with a stiffer one. The stock suspension didn't stop me from riding on all sorts of roads and trails even with all my camping gear, but I think an upgrade will make my experience with this great bike even better. They say that the '25 model will get an upgrade on the suspension. Thanks for the review.

I have the SRC guards on my rally and they are awesome. It also protects your shift lever/brake peddle to a degree and keeps the lower plastics from breaking and getting scratched. There is no need to get the upper crash guards . Like Ben says the Barkbusters take care of that . The upper fairings never touch the ground. Another nice thing about the SRC guards is that all the weight is at the bottom of the bike so you don't even know they are there. Great product
@airadaimagery6923 күн бұрын
That’s the one that I wanted when I bought mine in February 2022 but they were out of stock so I had to take a different route. But it still works great with lower crash bars and a separate skid plate. Dropped my bike about 4 times with No damage. I took the handlebar mounts off for the hand guards and mounted them to the triple tree with Zeta triple tree mounts because they twisted 2 out of the 4 times I dropped it. No more twisting.

Yeah, you don’t want a T7 for your first bike. Unless you just road riding. You need some experience to handle a T7 off road. You will have way more fun on the Rally once you do all the mods to it. It’ will do anything and take you anywhere, and you’ll be able to develop off road skills with ease. Not as easy as a dirt bike, but nothing like a T7.. I’m just a dual sport enthusiast, and never really liked heavy ADV bikes tho. I considered getting a CFMoto 450, but even if I did I wouldn’t sell my Rally. But now I have my eyes on the new baby GS 450 that’s supposed to hit the market in 2025. The new GS is supposed to be only 40lbs heavier than the Rally, which is 60lbs lighter than the CFMoto.. But even if I do get a GS I’m still not selling the Rally. Lightweight bikes are always more fun. I rode a T7. It feels heavier than it actually is. But that’s just my opinion. I been riding for 40 years. The Rally is something like my 20th bike, and I just like it that much.

A light tall bike is easier than a heavy tall bike. A short bike is easier than both. Get a used Honda 250, ride it for a couple months, then sell it and get the bike you want. That little bit of experience will make you much better on a taller, heavier bike
@airadaimagery6923 күн бұрын
@ yeah I think that GS looks sick af! Lol... Courses will help you a lot, but it’s usually just for road riding. I didn’t take any courses until I had already been riding for 30+ years and I still leaned a few things. I Just did it for fun. But when it comes to off roading, that takes experience. I started riding when I was 9 and raced MX in the 90s, so I had plenty opportunity to develop off road skills. But even after all that, it’s still a completely different animal taking a heavy ADV bike off road. The very best thing that can prepare a person for off roading with dual sports and ADV bikes is a dirt bike. I know not everyone can afford one when they’re buying a street legal bike, but it would advance your skills 10 fold.

I'm 48 currently with a Rally and a Monkey. If you can only afford or have the space for 1 bike, get the Rally. If you have the space and can afford to get a used Grom (not a Monkey [greatest motorcycle ever], you might not be willing to part with it, I won't sell mine ever) or even an Amazon dual sport for $1600 delivered. This way you can drop it without caring, cause you will drop it, it's part of learning but you'll learn faster if you don't have to worry about it. If you're like me you won't be gentle or care but I'm told that I'm unusually abusive to my bikes so mine has a few more scars than most.

@ Lugging around in 2nd or 1st gear all day isn’t fun to me, so the extra power isn’t a benefit. I can upgrade the suspension on the 300 to get it performing. And the weight difference is negligible tbh. So with the massive upside of the 300 being more usable and the downsides being able to be brought to par why would I want the 450? I don’t get many chances to open up the 450 where I ride, even so I’ll get the same enjoyment wringing the 300 in the same areas

Kawasaki miraculously lowered the US price on the KLX300 by $750 in 2025. I wish they offered a slightly more expensive adventure version of the KLX300 with a 4-5 gallon tank, large rear rack, etc. At least it's possible to buy a large after market fuel tank for the KLX. Even better would be a 450 cc version of the KLX300. 13:37 - I always get a chuckle seeing the guy standing where you want to ride and helpfully directing you to ride over the steep baby head rock garden.

She knows that I'll always come back to her for a fun relaxed ride after ripping on my 100+ hp ADV. She knows that she's just as capable, probably more, of finishing a BDR even though she needs that extra can of emergency gas. I literally had only six miles on the stock suspension before placing an order to Rally Raid and upgrading the front and rear. Some bikes are not worth upgrading because they are never going to get you where you want to be performance wise. This bike is worth building and upgrading to what your needs and expectations are. That said, it’s never going to be a DesertX or a GS, but frankly I don’t think it needs to be to have a blast.

I've got a 300L and I get 20 miles to the litre, which in US malarkey is 74 miles to the US gallon. And that's on road riding to off road sections in the uk. So percent wise it's predominantly road riding. However, I do give it the right hand on a regular basis ie I don't ride it like a little..... Anyway, I love it, I think that it's great. I just went out today on the South Downs for a few hours and got it covered in sh... I mean mud. I was going to hose it off, but I'll be going out on it again tomorrow. I can't get enough of it. My poor Z900RS sits at home weeping.

@michaellloyd79403 күн бұрын
@JakeShula, it depends on what brand of suspension you get. I purchased Rally Raid level 2 suspension. The rear shock is purchased and has the hydraulic preload adjuster which adds to the cost, but in my opinion it's worth it. The cost of the rear shock is about $850 and the fork kit is about $770. If you plan on keeping the bike for a long time it's worth the cost in my opinion. The bike handles totally different now. I highly recommend EVO suspension, Paul is a wizard with motorcycle suspension.

I went for the Kawasaki KLX 300 over the Honda. And that was mainly because of availability at the time and the grey camo color (I'm not a fan of bright red or green). The biggest feature I'm missing out on vs the Honda is the extra fuel but so far I haven't needed it.
@pawelwolski13163 күн бұрын
The factory bubble gum suspension violets the most basic suspension "rules". Race Tech additional spring (they offer 4 rates, unlike some of the retailers, which only carry the stiffest one). If u have extra $200, get the gold valve too. YSS rear shock, with the correct spring rate. I went one rate up from the suggested one and I am glad I did that. Stock bike runs out of air by 8k. 550 Performance tune and now the custom 3d printed snorkle is next. Follow up with an exh. The bike is now how it should have been delivered from Honda. All this is $1200-1500. Then whatever else you need. The stock tires also suck on the road. The front end "falls" into turns.....they suck. Not a smart ass, but it's 249 vs 286 cc, so 35cc extra, but the longer stroke is where the magic is. Great bike, but Honda is an ass for delivering it with bubble gum suspension and choked up engine.

Up here in Idaho there’s plenty of dirt roads where conditions vary with the seasons. I’ve gotten over my head once or twice but, knock wood, pulled it off! Definitely ready for a lighter bike. Been holding out for Triumph to buck up with their 400 or new Motocross platform to bring out a light ADV. the new BMW GS450 is certainly interesting. But maybe this unassuming Honda would be the answer!

I think the only way this is a bike to purchase is if you were to trailer it to your ride location to avoid highway miles. If you are being impeded by head winds and large trucks air wash you are riding a dangerous bike. At best most are riding 70/30 80/20 highway vs off-road. That means most of the time you are riding mostly highway miles. Just my opinion. You would be better off getting a light weight KTM 390 adv. it has a ton more horse power and the weight is about 385 lbs. it does those hwy miles much better. I think that is why so many are dumping their Hondas. You out grow it in about 2 months.

Just thought I'd add my observations... I bought this to learn 'off-road' style riding... I added bark busters and fairing crashbars and skidplate... It is tall... Im 5'9" and had to get a lowering link,... (and when you do this dont forget to change the side stand! Or it is too long)... I had several learning offs... and frustratingly the last low speed tip over I had (crap stock tyres in muddy rut) ... the bike fell on its left side and tool case holder broke, cracked away from rest of molded piece... which is the underside of rear of the bike... and yep must be a common problem as that part is on backorder... So Im stuck waiting...As for highway use... its like sitting on a plank of wood, and it feels like you have to wring its neck to keep it up at 100km/h, and overtaking anything at around that speed feels risky... so yeah, its defo naff on highway... When fixed im thinking of selling it to get a Himy 450...

I feel like if you have any experience working on cars, working on a bike is like nothing. Having to remove some fairings and a crash bar has got to be like 10-15 bolts max. Compare that to jack stands, tire removal, and then the same plastics/undertrays etc., it's like a walk in the park. Just one more reason this bike is awesome.

I almost bought a 300L but I couldn't decide between the 300 L or an Himalayan 411. Then finally, after thinking for a long time and watching hundreds of videos, I chose the Himalayan. Probably it was because of the more classic looks. Still I would be very interested in a 300L or a Rally.
@adaptableadventurerider3 күн бұрын
Brilliant video I agree honestly thought it was a much better road bike than the Himalayan I had to reject at 500 miles riddled with issues, the rally is a lot faster for start an the 300 Rally was fine at our legal motorway speeds here in the uk n great on the trails, I thought the rear shock was rubbish ended up with a level 1 rally raid rear shock on mine which was brilliant, with hpa, keeps the seat height the same. it reminded me of riding good low powered two stroke like the rd250lc in many ways, I do ride a 1927 Norton 16h on my other channel so I’m used to riding a 4.9hp 252lbs bike in modern traffic n it never gets held up. I really struggled with the seat on my crf mostly due to a previous nerve injury. For me I would have loved to have seen them do a 19” tubeless option Personally I thought it was a brilliant bike though an out of the 2x 390s we had full of issues which ended up rejected the Himmy again ended up rejected and the 300 rally it was the pick of the bunch For a bit of context I’ve owned n rode bikes from the 1200gsa, ex iom tt bikes and plenty of other stuff from 1927 to modern day great bike with Honda reliability. I’m on an nx500 now bought it for my dad who’s got stage 3b/4 prostate cancer as the t7 I got for him was to much, ended up selling it getting the nx500 been that impressed I’m buying a 2nd one for myself an selling my 1150gsa I agree I think the Rally is a brilliant bit of kit I wish they had made the plastics a lot better mine went as I stopped trail riding n the Nx is a better fit for our riding now :) having said that often think about getting another 300 Rally.

I think it's worth noting that travel on this type of bike is different than it is on an ADV bike. People like Itchy Boots or RTW Paul on his 500exc-f travel like backpacking tourists. They ride from hostel to hostel, stowing the bike and then taking a cab and walking around town for the rest of the day/week/month till the soreness wears off. A 300km day is "a big day". Whereas on a big ADV bike trip 300km might just be the first of four fuel stops each day. I think most riders would be pretty disappointed if they set off to go cross country on this bike. People on weird motorcycles with no motors that you have to pedal with your legs do it though, so maybe it'd be awesome.
