It’s another commute with Zack! As usual, please feel free to suggest a bike you want to see featured here. If we get enough comments, we’ll send him home on that one next.
--
It’s no secret we’re always trying to get our staff to work a little harder. Especially the ones who always seem to have too much to say. “Write it down!” we always shout at each other. Zack Courts is a classic case, always arriving to the office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he’s riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights that we thought might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts. So we strapped a camera and microphone to his helmet and told him to turn it on when he leaves his house. A lot of his talking in his helmet is complaining about drivers, yelling at red lights, and wondering why billboards aren’t more expensive. But sometimes he actually talks about the bike, and those are the parts we keep. Got a bike you would like to see discussed? Let us know and we’ll send him home on that one next.

@5putput If something goes wrong with the bike when its that new do you honestly think it would hold up well? Please don't misunderstand me these bikes are beautiful machines but they get off the hook because of 'character'. I think everyone would love to have such a bike in their garage but back off not because of the initial investment but because of the reliability issues.
@axs7689
@axs7689 6 жыл бұрын
@5putput so you keep a motorcycle only when its in warranty? I mean if you like MV thats great I'm not belittling your choice. I'm the kind of person who keeps a motorcycle for years and likes to work on them. Italian motorcycles need proprietary tools and service intervals are much shorter however Ducati has made lots of progress in this regard not MV. If you're talking about reliability in a one year or only warranty period I'm not sure if you have ever dealt with the shift in attitude of a dealership as soon as the warranty is over

I also bought a 17' Dragster RR, got about 1500kms on it now and replaced every thing plastic or fairing related with carbon. The spoked wheels really stand out and I think the extra 25hp or so compared to this one definately makes its a bit more fun. It is probably the most beautiful bike I have seen, very aesthetically pleasing. Only issues I have are with the quick shifter and it jumping into false neutral many times.

If a shift lever falling off worries you about long term reliability i would do some more reading on motorcycles. That bike was shipped over to the states in pieces and assembled by some mechanic at a dealer. Clearly he didnt go over the bike properly, but a loose bolt on a lever is far from electrical issues or the engine failing.

Zack basically said this is an emotional decision not a practical one. I don't think there's anything wrong with purchasing an MV Agusta (or anything really) if it has a design, sound, fit, and finish that reaches out to you. I don't doubt the other bikes everyone is bringing up are a better alternative in one way or another. I just think something has to be said for uniqueness. Thanks for the honest opinion Zack, both good (slick looking, pizzazz) and bad (mirrors, slippery pegs, and shift lever).

I had this bike for a year and a half, I put 4,800km on it. It’s a beautiful and really fun bike. If you’re considering this bike. Make sure you have two motorcycles. God for bid you have anything break or need replacement you will be waiting for weeks if not MONTHS! (I’m talking from first hand experience). It took 3 months to receive 3 fuel gasket replacements.. practically the most basic and replaceable components of a bike. The after sales customers service is the absolute worst. They refuse to give you any ETAs for parts and most dealers refuse to even work on the bike; even while mine was under warranty! I traded in the bike and bought a 2017 Aprilia Tuono Factory for the same price I payed for that MV. Best damn decision I’ve ever made.
@pentiumradeon

is the throttle on your tuono very sensitive? I test rode one and I had to have my hand on the clutch the entire time, any bump on the road would translate to throttle response.

As a MV owner I must agree, it is unreliable compared to jappos, which I also own. I have the rivale 800 and it is and epic niche bike. Has had some issues which warranty took care of. Definitely unfortunate for it to happen during filming, but it happens all the time. I lost the front brake lever on a one-week old brand-new Suzuki when I started riding back in 2001. I was able to find the lever, but the bolt that slid out was lost in space. Bolt slippage happens to all the manufacturers, best and worst. A loose bolt is not (necessarily) a sign of an unreliable bike.

True story: one of my customers bought a gazebo from Italy. Damn, it was truly beautiful, one true garden jewel but there was a petite problem: it was so flimsy, so bloody fragile that it needed some extra engineering and upgrades to keep it bolted to the pavement in case of a sudden summer storm or, you know, just a cheeky wind or something. I’ve came up with a solution but in order to move forward I needed its colour code to paint the extra parts so I called Italy. I talked to a guy from design & technical department, explained the problem and his answer blew my mind: _“Signore, Lei aveva raggione! (Sir, you’re right) it is so and so but it is so beautiful, am I right?”_ Fuck me! He was absolutely right, I couldn't deny it; it looked superb so right then and there I’ve completely understood everything Italian, you name it: Alfa Romeo, Ducati, Ferrari, Italian fashion etc: It may not work all the time (especially whenever you’re expecting it the most) but, fuck yeah, when it does work it will perform like nothing else in this world or/and it will look astonishingly beautiful. “It looks great” - Italian philosophy in a nutshell.

Riding on a highway at night, I narrowly avoided some garbage bags that were in the road, but it did tore my shifter right off. A mile or so down the highway, there was a sofa in the middle lane! Made it home in 6th gear, including full stops at lights. That was on A Suzuki V-Strom 650. A few weeks ago, my friend and I were doing a Saddlesore 1000, and at about mile 800 - 850 or so, his shifter came off of his 2017 Victory Cross Country. He was able to road-side repair it, and we finished our Iron Butt run (1000 miles in < 24 hours). My contribution to the repair was to hold the flash light.... That's why I ride Japanese, a Kawasaki Versys 1000 these days.

Nice work. Also thumbs up for carrying the toolkit on your commute. For my bike, two combination wrenches, a single allen key and a Phillips head screwdriver cover most fasteners and fit under the seat. I just wrap them in a small rag and plastic bag so they don't rattle around. That combination was enough to lift the tank and get my fuel hose reconnected at the side of the road after it unclipped on the way home from work one day.

you see the experience of a rider when things dont go smooth like that. to be honest being a younger less experienced driver that shift lever problem would ruin my day if not my week. handling it so calmly without giving a single fuck was awesome. much respect.

OK, so this is the perfect MC Commute. Nice bike, good explanation of the bike details, a real life problem while riding, and a quick and easy temporary solution to the problem to get you home or to safety. You were calm and held it together. I think most of us would have been yelling and swearing and kicking the living fuck out of our bike. In fact, I'm going home to kick mine just in case it even THINKS about breaking. Nice job Zack. Can't wait for you to have access to the new CB1000R. I am so torn on the next bike to add to my garage.

The thing with MV Agusta's bikes is that they aren't the greatest but you still want them to sell good or even get them just because they are so cool. We need more manufacturers that make bikes with that mindset in out lives!

Good honest review as usual. Shame about the bolt coming loose on the gear-shift but seeing as I found a couple of loose nuts and bolts on my MV Dragster I know that it wouldn't put me off buying another one. Just means that you have to go through the bike with a fine toothcomb after its first few miles. As for character... it goes a long way. Tried a few other bikes this year but there's something missing from them. They mostly felt dull and boring. That engine is the perfect blend for most jobs most of the time.

A similar thing happened to me on my Buell xb9r, the shifting linkage broke, and I was stuck in fifth gear. Despite that, I was able to take off from the lights in fifth gear with no problem. Torque is awesome.

It looks like a piece of art. And much like other Italian pieces of art, like Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, it's not ment to actually be ridden. Imagine riding the Dante's inferno. It can't be done.

This is why you do or have done your 600 mile service to check for loose bolts. Dealers know what tends to loosen on particular models. You can use loctite, fingernail polish, or even safety wire. Drill 1/16" hole and insert safety wire and fixed for life. If you have not have had something come loose then you have not been riding enough miles. Zack could have used the locking pliers as a shift lever if he really wanted to or maybe perhaps used a zip tie or a couple of zip ties as a bolt if it was a through and through point of attachment. You could just as easily blame Zack for not doing a though pre-flight inspection especially when he took delivery of the bike for the first time. Check oil, check tire pressure, check critical fasteners perhaps not every ride but depending on how much you ride at least once a month and for sure when you get a brand new bike. Who knows maybe the lunch bell rang when they put this bolt on at the factory and it didn't get torqued or loctite for some reason. Don't have a cow man.

Kudos on the roadside shenanigans (and the impromptu advertisement for Cruz Tools :)). That bike reminds me of my Monster, although mine does not have the quick shifter but DOES have a shift lever, so far. Fun video as always.

If you haven’t done so already, I’d love to see you review the Ducati Hypermotard 939SP. I’ve had mine 15 months and had some teething issues with the electronics but they seem to have been sorted out (fingers crossed). But when it’s running right with a full-race Termi, air box mod and computer update, the soundtrack alone is enough to make your eyes water as you shake your head and say, (while chuckling), “Oh, my God!!! This is what the perfect grown-up Supermoto SHOULD be!!!”

This was my first video/impression of this channel. I __loved__ this review. The presenter had a perfect opportunity(which some might actively seek) to curse the heavens at the misfortune of a situation and swear off a manufacturer for all time; he did not do this! He chose, instead, to bike-on and understand the nature of the machine, the compromises it represents and the whimsy-of-ownership. I found it endlessly amusing to show a mechanical 'hangup' on a review. This essentially communicates to the audience - if you aren't mentally/emotionally prepared for this type of adventure, then this lifestyle(or product) is not for you.

That same exact thing happened to me. I bought a used Triumph trophy with 24,000 miles on it and on the commute the shifter pivot bolt sheared away. I had roadside assistance, but still it was rush hour commute time, so I was stuck downtown for hours waiting for a flatbed truck to come get me.

I rode both. The Triumph has a great chassis and the seat is comfy. MV is harder, very woobly and not so easy to ride due the short wheelbase. I bought the MV because I prefer the torque, sound, excitement and looks of it. Both great bikes!

Haven't ridden the new models, but it was a tough call for me on the older models. To me the MV has the cool factor and better looks, but the Street Triple just felt comfortable and right for me from the first ride. The MV felt harder-edged. Test ride them both if you can and let us know!

Waiting to see how the coming KTM 790 Duke competes in this displacement segment. I do prefer a grumbly, barking twin. Really wish Yamaha or Suzuki or Kawasaki would produce some BEASTLY large displacement triple (about 1300cc) that revs to 12,000 rpm, built to the same sort of philosophy as the Ninja 1000 sport touring category but with the least amount of weight possible.
@Firestorm637
@Firestorm637 4 жыл бұрын
I own a Super Duke and a MV Dragster 800rr. I can be 6th gear at 2000 rpm no problem. 3rd gear from a red light, no problem. Then you can spin it up to 13,000 rpm. Triples are great engines. They are almost as smooth as a V4 and offer the torque/high rpm like a V4. Easier to work on vs the V4. Hopefully see more triples.

Ouch. That was embarrassing. There was probably some yelling and hand waving at MV when they saw that. When I talked to a MV dealer, he said they are actually pretty reliable, and if anything goes wrong, it happens early in the mileage, then it's fine.

MV Agusta attempt to penetrate my country market last year by bringing this model. I test ride it and realize one thing, it does have a character of a beast and unforgiving. Very different feel from a Japanese machine with precision and linear power that easy to tame. Brutale 800 is one wild beast that needs some effort to tame. I despise the seat, I wouldn't want to be on the saddle for more than 15min to be honest. It hurts like hell and in heavy slow traffic, the engine heated up so easily that it shut down by itself during my test ride. Unreliable is what this machine is. Would I buy one? Nah... no way.
