To say I’m embarrassed is an understatement, watch me learn in this reaction to “1916” as I struggle to comprehend that Lemmy could do this 🥹

The best way i saw it described, is Lemmy's version is man weary of war and ground down. Whereas sabatons version, he is urtery pissed off at the stupidity of it all, i see the anger in Joachim's face in his last line

Many have assumed Motorhead is just "the Ace of Spades band", but they really do have so much more to offer. Lemmy was a brilliant lyricist.. a whip smart, well read, self educated man who could pull off some superb lyrical verse. His band didnt do a lot of ballads.. but when they did, they drop kick you right in the gut. This song and "Dont let daddy kiss me (goodnight)" off the Bastards album are 2 of his most heart rending ballads. He also wrote the hit ballad for Ozzy, "Momma Im Comin' Home".

Just 'Cos You Got the Power is another great motorhead song. It is also not just the ballads that people don't know. the Motorhead catalogue is so deep.

Oh Motörhead is blues, it's 50's rock'n roll, it's ballads of the fallen and the brave. Motörhead is Lemmy and Lemmy is diverse in his taste in music. Even did pop songs at one time. I mean, try to shoehorn Lemmy into any category and you will fail. I really miss Lemmy. A lot of artists I liked have died over the years but Lemmy... that one kinda hit me wrong. I didn't expect it to but it did. I grew up with Motörhead, from the 70's to the end and it kinda felt like an era that I loved was over.

While I can appreciate Saboton's effort and the quality behind their performance, I don't feel the energy captures the emotion of the story. This version properly paints the picture of a young boy, not yet a man, realizing he'll never see home, again. Saboton's sounds like a Viking prepared to die on his shield, w/out an ounce a fear.
@dezzconnor83609 ай бұрын
I can't disagree with you: Sabaton's version is almost celebratory, triumphant sounding, and I feel like that almost completely misses the point of this song as written, and performed here.

Oh I forgot to tell you, me and my friends played it over and over again from CD at a "grave of the unknown soldier" memorial on the 100. anniversary of the beginning of WW1 and got tons of great comments and interactions with people for doing it. Some cried hearing it for the first time in their lives. There is just something about Lemmy singing these lyrics that grabs you and doesn't let you go, ever! Once you heard it, you will never forget it.

Thanks for taking the time to go back and do this one, a song that never fails to bring me to tears... most certainly a change of pace for the Motorhead we all thought we knew.... Check out the lyrics for "Orgasmatron" for some of Lemmy's otherworldly songwriting talents... oddly, my personal favorite, "Limb from Limb" isn't heard too often.....
