We've got a 44' fifth wheel with huge tanks we must "slosh" around as well. We use the blue stuff in the states too. A kettle of hot water in the drains helps loosen things too. No coke, ants will invade. No bleach, too harsh on plumbing. The blue stuff has enzymes that break everything down nicely. White vinegar is also safe.

Good tip, I can definitely see the logic in how it should work. I had visions of the liquid squirting out like one of those geysers in Iceland because of the sloshed coke, like when you shake the can and open it straight away. I guess bicarbonate of soda/white vinegar would probably do the job too maybe?

I’d add “bicarbonate of soda” during the cleaning swishing around stage as well next time, it is known as a cleaner and neutraliser and won’t do any harm...I use it at home for soaking pans that have hard to shift baked on food & it’s really good, I’m not sure about the liquid washing machine stuff but I know if you use powdered detergent + bicarbonate of soda + white vinegar (does the same job as the cola) with a little bit of bleach then add everything together and it fizzes up due to the “ingredients” reacting together and gets into every nook & cranny. Look up uses for bicarbonate of soda online and you’ll see what I mean & it’s cheap too. Happy Sunday evening guys 😀

We have thought of using bicarbonate of soda.

do not use bleach with acid it can create chlorine gas

E.A. GAUSS thanks for that...I didn’t know but have looked it up & it seems you are correct, funny though cos I’ve been using them together (mixed with water and in small quantities of course) for many years and have never had any ill effects...I have however had coughing fits where I’ve had to leave the room for 20 mins or so when cleaning my bath with “off the shelf” product’s especially those “mousse spray” type products that used to be around a few years ago, don’t seem to see them as much lately...anyway...thanks again for the info, I’ll be more careful in future 👍

@@DottyGran247 its a pleasure i only knew that because a cleaner in a factory i worked at did it to clean the toilets and we had to evacuate the site and he had to go to hospital with burns in his lungs nasty stuff

deejay1807 true about the instructions being tiny. I do open windows but that bathroom mousse stuff does something to my airways, I haven’t used it for years and I’ve learned not to mix bleach with other stuff now so all is good. Thanks for your input 🙂

You would most likely get a better result with vinegar and it is probably not that much more per bottle, as long as you don't have a bunch of bleach or hydrogen peroxide in your grey water. It's just a more powerful acid than what is in the coke. I always have a bottle of vinegar for cleaning, a vinegar/water solution works great for soaking stove drip pans.

I don’t have a camper van but I do have a camping trailer and to empty the the grey water and black water tanks take me like 15 minutes from start to finish. Unfortunately in my trailer version I would have to pull the tank out completely to gain access.

Im guessing yours is a lot bigger though.

I put 2 5lb bags of ice in my black tank before I empty it. I go for a drive before i empty it. The ice acts as a macerator of sorts as well as getting all the disgusting muck from the cracks n crevices. Works like a charm and it's a cheap method of cleaning out the tank.

We wash up with ammonia in our water instead of washing up liquid. Ammonia is a degreaser and deep cleaner. It keeps your pipes and sensors clean and degreased. No need to do this maintenance either.

I use a big bag of cheap ice a glug of bleach and a squirt of washing machine liquid no water other than the ice added I then drive to my next destination and I leave the tank as is until it is next full I then empty and all is clean :)
