Those autos, activa aunties and splendor uncles on the "slow" lane is the reason why I have to hog the middle or fast lane (if not a 6 lane highway)... I ride an RS200 and it can do 100 - 110 with very minor strain so I can stay in the fast lane but I don't want to be on the fast lanes bcz I don't if the Creta guy behind me uses dipper in moderation... So, I love the middle lane when I have to access to it...

Riders we are afraid of on the road: 1. Tilted head rider (talking on the phone). 2. Chhapris (for the lack of a better word) who swivel their bikes around. 3. The patakha exhaust enthusiasts (I have encountered a crash where one bullet rider popped his exhaust under a tunnel and a lady on a scooty just lost her balance and crashed). 4. Riders who turn both of their mirrors inwards so they join hands in the middle, why?? 5. The pencil jeans gang of Riders who, for some strange reason, take one motorcycle for a group of 4 guys. 6. Delivery agents who don't care to stop at the side while checking their phones. I have seen delivery guys operating their mobiles upwards of 60 seconds at a time. That's is bonkers. 7. E-rikshaws who try to save their battery juice by switching their headlights off. Now I have a metal cage with humans shoved in, coming at me silently @25 kmph in complete darkness. Now, about speed. I have a rule of thumb while on the highways, no matter what the posted speed is for that particular road, you would find that there is a practical speed at which the traffic is in motion, let's say of that practical speed is 65 kmph, I would ride at about 70. But not 60, always a little bit faster but not too much. And while touring (a lot of unfamiliar roads), I pick a spotter (a vehicle about 100 meters ahead of me) which I use as a guide. If there is a bump on the road, the spotter will go through that 3-5 seconds before me, allowing me to account for that undulation. Like always, I had a great time. Bless you all. Keep up the good work.❤
@motorinc Жыл бұрын
Did you know that a "a bit faster than traffic", 15% to be precise, is what the British Motorcycle Policemen's manual recommends as the safest way to operate in traffic? Overtaking puts you in control o the situation so gently passing traffic _all the time_ is safer for a bike than flowing with it, or being passed by it

Most of the roads don't have clear speed limits mentioned, but whenever it is there i stick around it because I believe I will be safer around that limit, another indication on highways are rubble strips whenever I encounter it it's clear that there is a town or an intersection ahead where I need to be attentive. Also you made a good point of car maintenance as I heard in the news recently that most of the accidents on samruddhi mahamarg are due to poorly maintained vehicles. So that needs to be taken care of. Thank you for such interesting and informative podcasts, i would suggest that you run a poll about what all things people want to know about any particular topic and then you can add them accordingly.

I have done quite a bit of highway/expressway driving in recent past. I never chase people who are coming from behind and always overtake when I am coming from behind. This has made my driving logic quite simple and safe. Also, I try to understand my speed limit before applying these rules, even after a short break along a long drive. The issue is there are few people who has a sense of ego attached to their speed and either are very lethargic to give way or will try to block you proactively. Now, I have only two options, either I can chase and make both prone to mishaps or to gently let them get away with it sacrificing my speed for both of our safety. I mostly face this when I am driving my ignis, and try to overtake VWs and BMWs and sometime even swifts. Please enlighten on how to handle these people who will speed up when they feel a smaller/less powerful car trying to overtake them?

I think this debate regarding speed limit also depends on the way you drive. I drive a Pulsar N160… I speed when I’m driving solo, and on straight roads where traffic is very little. The main concern that I usually have is other vehicles driving like crazy. It’s important to give indicators when switching a lane or the fact that bike aerodynamics are very different when you have a person sitting behind you. Plus, most people sitting in the back actually don’t sit well enough for the bike to be aerodynamic. So if you wanna speed, SPEED SOLO, SPEED RESPONSIBLY and kindly ensure you don’t become another example of DARWINISM

I’d say step 1 is for the RTO folks to enforce driving exams - I’d be interested to find out(and this data probably exists somewhere in the public domain) how many people fail the driving exam. I’m sure it’s way lower than it should be. The system is so broken in some states in the North that I have a friend who has a license to drive a tractor!! My own driving exam lasted like 10 seconds - I started to pull the seat-belt and the examined said: ‘ arre aap toh serious ho gaye’ 😅 Step 2 would be then to aggressively enforce rules within city limits so that folks are a little more civilized by the time they hit the highway…
@Kislay_Joshi Жыл бұрын
And then there is the point about clear signboards which unfortunately don’t exist in the country. I can go on and on… 😄 People are idiots all across the world - the governments need to put them in a system that is kinda idiot proof and then enforce it. Some countries do it better than we do.

120 -140kph speed limits on expressways is not the problem. The issue is extremely poor lane discipline and some people thinking oye race track hai BC. People being poor judge of how much speed can be scrubbed off or how much speed can be carried through a stretch all leads to crashes. I strongly feel that if I have to pay 5-600 or more to use a stretch of road I'm not driving at 80 f*****g km/h. We keep paying tolls for what essentially should be 'free' considering its built using our taxes & we keep being milked using tolls at every stretch long after cost has been recouped. I don't agree with blanket ban of 2 wheelers on expressways. 250cc & up should be allowed on expressway .
@shantanu_d Жыл бұрын
What happens when we put a minimum speed limit ? 1. Protests, 2. Disregard by motorists and 3. Reduction in number of vehicles plying on that road once fines start. In effect nothing catastrophic is going to happen as "feared/peddled" by the striking group and in the longer term lesser accidents as a lot of them happen when there's a speed mismatch.

Tata sumo example brought back old memories of growing up roadtriping in a Sumo and then learning to drive it. It was just like what shumi said, once it reached 60/80kmph you hated to lose speed. But over these years I realised people on roads lack basic etiquettes. You will find people sitting on road dividers and chatting with their feet stretched out. Crossing from places where there are no spaces to cross. Riding/driving while talking on cell phones and then have audacity to blame others. Speed limits in India serve to avoid the chaos that will be caused if they are absent. Getting DL has become tough but it still easy to procure one from an agent with good connections.

Much informative video for all the drivers out there👍🏻 I think as Indians we can be better drivers if we have the patience to learn something before jumping onto the conclusion that I got a license and now I’ve learnt the way of driving in any type of roads in our own way which eventually end up in a bad situation for everyone out there . Ride fast but be attentive on roads conditions ahead & the signs boards. Thank me later as that’s the only part of being safe out there. Me who drives a tin can through expressways and worst highways in country till date trust me not met with a single crash coz I know the car is not safe beyond that certain point.

I discovered this video very late and after going through it I feel a lot of guys may not agree with my point of view. But I discovered that if i sit just a smidgen under speed limit, I can be faster than 50% of traffic around me, I can concentrate on the road better without having to actively look out for cops or traffic cams. I get more time to react to situations as a result of which my car/bike stops better and handles better.My passengers are more comfortable and most importantly I may be 10-15 min off the faster guy in reaching the destination, but I reach my destination much fresher, safer and with a lot more fuel in the tank. On the highways Iam always scared of slow unattentive guys, coz if u give way to the faster guys, they will pass you and u can drive at ur own pace. The slow unattentive guy will block u, test your patience and force u to take drastic steps thereby increasing your chances of making a mistake.

It's true of many roads in India, actually. We did ask a bunch of truckers on a stretch in Bihar why they did that. They told us that the more unpredictable they think the left lane is going to be (cyclists, slow traffic, pedestrians as well as super fast overtakers... depending on the roads) the more the trucks want to "close off" one side so they have to monitor less... hence top lane.

on open Indian highways I think 80-100 is best speed for car as well as bike, as if something comes your way you will be able to control your vehicle & fuel efficiency will be better as well.

a small piece of advice sir, (chota mu bari bate) it doesn’t matter how fast you can ride/drive! what really does matters is how much you have the control over your vehicle while driving/riding on a higher pace!

The biggest disadvantage of over speeding on a free road, is interceptor stops you and fine you and waste whatever extra time you gain out of over speeding, and ultimately you reach late at destination

Ever since I got the Speed 400, my fascination for the highway has diminished. Narrow and decently surfaced roads are my new favorites. I frequently like to ride on roads that cyclists prefer because they are narrow and not many motorists use them for this reason. Having done Ladakh only last season (on the car), my new dream ride is to take narrow back roads around Pune and do a 360° chakkar around the city using just those back roads riding around all the dam backwaters around Pune in the process. The speeds will be moderate, progress will be slow but even 50-60 *feels* FAST on such roads. I rarely get such sense of speed these days on NHs nowadays. I doubt this ride can be done in 1 day. My estimate is that it will take 2.5 days but it should be a LOT of fun while not being too far away from home 😊.

In a country that is still not disciplined enough to drive on their side of the road, bikes cars and trucks all can be seen on the wrong side of a national highway to save a few km of uturn, speed limits is a far distant concern. First we need to fix the like Wrong side driving, signal jumping , riding on footpath etc etc with strong policing.

The Bengaluru-Mysore Expressway is still allowing motorcycles, if you want to. i just did, and it was bittersweet. I was legally at a speed that's comfortable for me and my motorcycle, but there were other vehicles who insist on going 20-40kph over the speed limit.

One of the greatest podcasts I have ever listened to, but unfortunately 90% of it becomes pointless in a country like India where 60% of the drivers/riders are on the road for no other reason other than surviving day to day life and therefore overworked and tired and are in/on a vehicle that is dirt cheap, age old, equipped with less than minimum safety features, have less than reasonable quality and was last serviced when the first avenger movie came out.

Could you also do a video on talking about modifications and their legality. Also people need to understand having a high beam on doens't mean the guy in front will take off! There is been a huge problem with high beams and how and where there are used.

The road thickness of the autonhan is similar to the runway at the airport and people don't change lanes until they want to really fast or overtake. In india even if there is a 4 lane highway, there will be a slow vehicles on all lanes most of the time or if it is late night it will be occupied by trucks. If you travel on the towards pune around 3-4 am on the ghat section, it is common to see all three lanes occupied by trucks and a bunch of cars trying to squeeze and create an extra lane

Speed is highly dependent on the type of vehicle. On my dads Alto I couldnt feel safe going over 80 kph. So on the Pune Expressway even though the limit was 100 kph I simply couldn't maintain those speeds with any confidence and dropped speed to 80 kph. On my dad's Freestyle 100 kph feels very comfortable. I used to travel the Expressway when the limit was 120 kph and I did find it a tad excessive given the roads aren't that straight.

Being on the road for last 10years majority of the time as biker than lately as a driver, I personally feel if i know the road and my vehicle is in top notch condition even then i dont go above 120 at all on any road as my mind gets fatigued easily at that number in an hour. While yesterday I did Sangli to Anand(850km) almost constantly at 100kmph though average speed came out to be 80kmph. I have just defined my limits 100kmph all day long with short breaks is what i am made for be it bike or car. Also always checkup your vehicle before going on a trip more than 100km. Also the conditions like, I like night riding/driving mostly cooler environment,less commuters,less cattle(although always alert for anything). Its like Initial D go fast but smooth , not too fast and rough it fatigues body,mind,vehicle everything in general.

Very true about NZ roads. Speed adviser signs in yellow on corners are very helpful, especially on back country roads.

Speed is one thing and other things to be aware of what speed to drive at which lane, we where on Mumbai Nagpur express highways where the speed limit is 120 kmph.. doing a 110kmph, we had to overtake a truck coz I was driving on the middle lane, when I put my indicator to change lane to the rightmost lane, we find people driving at 40kmph … if they had to drive that slow, they should be driving in the left most lane . But most population are not aware of how fast to drive on which lane .. next thing we saw was an xuv700 guy ramming to the swift .. 😢
@motorincАй бұрын
We agree @whythereisnogum, to us all this issue boils down to licencing system not being thorough. If we make it stricter, we should see the road discipline proportionately going up. India has been in need of a tiered licencing system for a decade, at least.

After a point, speed limits will be controlled by AI, making it more dynamic, what will be considered? Time of day, weather, how many cars on the road (calculated using toll plazas) etc

Yes! So many factors have an impact!

Whether its a city main road or national highway or even the expressway, people driving too fast and too slow always create problems. The other thing is the sudden presence of the animals like cows and dogs especially on city streets and sometimes on national highways going through a farm land or forest area (though on national highways, these are now quite less than what it used to be) Don't know why but I feel you guys should be in the department of the government which sets all these things in place. We need this understanding and the knowledge to be carried forward to the newer generations (like myself). PS. it's lovely always to feel that I'm good driver and rider based on the things you guys have said on many of your videos. Its brilliant. If not the government, then I'll obviously share it with more people.
