I rode my Ducati scrambler (2015) for good 9 years, it was never my daily commuter but a motorcycle which I rode twice a month for weekend trips and maybe for one multiple day trip each year. Did in total mere 22k Kms. Most of us are not so lucky like you guys who can ride motorcycle to work, for work and live with those beautiful machines through out the day. We trouble finding time among our short weekends, among our weekly chores, among our fatherly duties and among our husband responsibilities. Still we promise ourselves that we would go for a ride tomorrow and then we trouble finding that tomorrow. I have always had a tradition of touching my bike everyday giving it a kiss or a pelt whenever I leave home for work, it gave me a feeling of satisfaction that even when I am not riding it everyday, it’s always there for me waiting patiently. One day after a 500kms ride, I felt like I wanted something new, felt like the Ducati would be better off in someone else’s hand. Suddenly felt that it was just not enough, So sold it and after reading, watching everything about every motorcycle, bought a Speed twin 1200. Funny enough, I stumbled upon you guys while I was doing all of that. Took your advice on buying a motorcycle which I wanted, understanding my needs, so I researched myself in the process. Shortlisted things that gave me happiness, pleasure and what would bring that smile every time I ride it. Budget being not an issue, it was a whole world to choose from but thought of keeping it realistic, of what purpose I had with my motorcycle, for which I will always find time however busy it becomes. Specification wise it was low end torque, a classic roadster and a motorcycle which would never feel old even after 15 years of its age, a motorcycle even my son would love to take to his college one day and ‘oat important, I never want my motorcycles to be overwhelming. So I went with triumph and Wow, what a motorcycle it has been, already rode 2000 kms in a week and it brings me a smile every time. So you may call that I got bored but for me it was an upgrade that would keep me engaged and bring me back to the thing I so dearly love. Sometimes, even if you are aware that certain things would take all of your stress and give you that freedom, we just do not find enough reasons or time to do it. Hopefully my Triumph is the one for which I would not find reasons to ride but I just do. Happy Motorcyling!

I relate to what Shumi spoke about in the beginning on so many levels.. I have been riding a Honda Dio BS3 2014 for the past 8 years and 90,000 kms. And both of us have been through it all. I once have been the immature brat who twisted the throttle to the max to see how fast it can go, then I've gone through a phase where I took it to off-road trails even motorcycles shyed away from, I've toured on it, and done a lot of things. Then later, it suddenly dawned on me that I've been putting it through hell, that it doesn't deserve to be treated like that and decided to slow down and take good care of it. But all the damage had already caught up to it by then. The headlight unit was hanging (which is a common issue in Dios), the suspension bushes were fried etc. etc. But rather than selling it off and finding another scooter, I decided to take up the responsibility and live with it. Even after I put it through hell, it has never created a situation of pain for me. Never broken down, has always been with me. Whenever I feel like crying, I take the Dio and go for a ride. It has taken me to college, then another college, and now takes me to my coaching institute clocking 50 kms a day. All of it, and never a complaint and never a dull moment. Still gives me a tank to tank mileage of 51 kms to a litre. Since he is now around 10 years old, my parents are forcing me to sell it. I've thought about it as well. I've learned so much on it that I need to move on now. I can ride at 80 and not have a shrill of adrenaline rush in my blood. I've gotten used to speed and the brakes and the tire sized and all limit me. But can't help myself to sell the thing. I can't convince my parents to let him stay. And I can't also understand if this emotion I have for it is momentary. Just torn...

I did make some modifications including replacing thr old Halogen based heeadlight with OEM Led headlight that came with 2018 Aviator model before it was discontinued. 42:44 We also faced a similar issue with test drive. We wanted to test drive the Mahindra XUV700 and this was about 2 years ago when it was the new player in the market. The showroom people saw my dad and realized since he is a senior citizen, they offered a test drive from home. We said okay, so gave them contact details. Sure enough about 40 minutes later we get a call from one of the guys from the showroom asking where our house is as he said he'll be there in 30 minutes. This 30 minutes went on to become 2 hours. At this point we completely lost interest and said no thank you. We don't want to buy the car from you nor we want to take a test drive from you.

Hey K and Shumi! Love your podcasts and reviews - they’ve been super helpful as I figure out what car to upgrade to. We’ve been driving a 12-year-old VW Polo diesel, which recently broke down, leaving us with a 60k repair bill. That was a wake-up call that our Polo is nearing end of it's life, even though we’ve loved it dearly :( Our budget is set at 12-15L, and we’ve been test-driving various cars. My dad, who’s 52, will be the primary driver. He covers about 50km daily, 5-6 days a week, mostly on city highways (avg. speeds around 60km/h). He’s always aspired to own an SUV because of its size and comfort, plus the emotional appeal-many of his friends drive one. He definitely wants an automatic for easier daily commutes. We narrowed it down to the Kushaq (or very likely the Kylaq when it releases) and the 3XO because we want something that feels as punchy as our Polo. My dad is particularly drawn to the Kushaq (he doesn't even want to consider a non VAG car) since it’s familiar, spacious, comfortable, and exciting when you push it hard. It ticks all the boxes apart from cost. Then I listened to your thoughts on sedans and automatics, and it got me reconsidering. We tried the Slavia 1.5, which felt much like the Kushaq but more planted and stable at high speeds. The 1.0 Slavia also felt good, especially considering the price difference. Coming from an older Polo which doesn't even have bluetooth with 120k kms on it, both the Kushaq and Slavia's 1.0 variants also feel like a massive upgrade. Logically, a diesel automatic like the Sonet might be a smarter choice given our monthly running. The Nexon or 3XO could work too, but I’m wary of AMTs. Still, the Skoda/VW 1.0 petrol feels like home and a natural upgrade, even though it comes at a premium. I can’t fault them; they’re satisfying in a way the others just aren’t. So, does it make sense to go for a petrol? A Skoda/VW 1.0L auto? A micro-SUV (Kylaq) over a sedan? How do we balance practicality and passion when it comes to this upgrade? TIA!

Well there’s one more reason to sell your beloved motorcycle that is if you’re moving to a different country for your career and so now you don’t want to keep your vehicle parked while you spend nights dreaming of being owning a motorcycle once again and your only solace is watching two gentlemen on KZbin talking passionately and giving some sane advice on patience which for you is being tested each passing day as you’re counting each penny going towards the bike fund that….. **sigh** I may have gone off topic a little. /s - I wasn’t going to comment initially but currently the KZbin videos are closest thing to experiencing motorcycles and each MotorInc notification brings me joy.

Shumi: "I love working on my bike, but it has to be optional and not a requirement." This simple statement clarified so much in me, because when I'd hear people say that their car broke down but it's okay because they now get a chance to know the car better, it's bs. Nobody wants to spend their precious time working on repairing something. Unless it's enhancing something, nobody wants to work on their vehicle.

It solved the neck pain completely. I made a loss by selling it as it was only 3 years old. Whereas I kept my classic 350 bs3 as I have a lot of nostalgia associated with it. The GT650 is a recent purchase (22/06/22) that has a customised British Racing Green tank with Gold stripes and a Cognac leather seat. But i don’t use them. Cos they are really hard to maintain. Just wow. Still a lot to learn from you guys. Have been riding fully geared here in the US despite the commute being shorter from home to work as compared to Mumbai. Reason being I have seen Shumi once on his Multistrada few years back and couldn't believe that he was fully geared even during Summer. This guy is real example of 'no compromise on standards and safety'. And then few minutes and km later after Shumi had disappeared, I saw a guy on a Busa with a full face helmet but sadly just a T shirt, jeans and sport shoes. Got to learn a lot that day.

Just adding a couple of points on top of what Shumi said about lemons. If you gonna take your vehicle offroad it’s gonna take a lot more maintenance. Bearings will will go bad faster , suspensions will need rebuild even if they are not leaking. They are not lemon just taking a vehicle offroad regularly will take a toll on components and you will need to take care of them more frequently.

I think having 2 kinds of vehicles which are very different and purpose built make sense if you have the garage. My experience - Got an Xcent in 2016 - loved it, driving my family around in comfortable, spacious car which was frugal. 8 years years later (100k kms) I stopped enjoying it and bought a Jeep compass. Now I have both of them, Jeep for the fun (highway) and Xcent for the City rides. The Jeep is fantastic on highways and bad roads but fails to beat the convenience of the Hyundai in the City.

That point where you said better driver in a hatchback, I can relate on both sides. When I was showing off my VW DSG where I was always getting behind with a petrol Swift when I wasn't mature enough. Now I have a petrol Ertiga on which I can keep up with Turbo Diesels on highway just because I choose the right lane to avoid vehicles.

I got my first bike in form of a second hand FZ-S 2014, 2 years ago while I was in college. It was well maintained by the prior owner. It was how I learned to ride a bike, travel to college, do weekend trips, travel with to and with my girlfriend, short rides. At this point I kind of feel a bit bored of the street bike format. Thinking to upgrade to a Suzuki Vstorm sx 250. Im 5'7' and its a bit tall for me, but taking a test ride i had so much fun riding that beautiful machine, i was just smiling while riding during that whole test ride - in traffic, getting it out of a tight space and in the potholes. I was in love. It also have dual ABS, unlike Honda CB200x. A bit worried if I'll be able to handle the height aspect with a pinion while touring but I'm really excited for that as a challenge. Currently have other financial commitments, so have to delay buying a bike for an year :')

I have owned my Hness 350 for more than 2 years now. I still love the motorcycle, the way it sounds when I shift down, the way it rides on highways - everything. But, there is not excitement in the motorcycle anymore; I could relate to "it doesn't challenge you anymore" part. So now I am looking at other motorcycles, mostly the adventure tourers because that is how I felt like riding my Hness as well (and yes, I tortured it by saddling at full throttle over potholes haha). Gonna rent out the himalayan 450 on a weekend and do a trip - well, thats how I got my Hness as well. Probably I still have a year or two till I get a new motorcycle, but no matter what the Hness will stay with me - as my first motorcycle.

I found my true calling in bikes after 10 years and 1 lakh km, most recently after 2 years and 40000 km of riding my ex himalayan 411, of which 30,000 was the "waiting", for my present bike, a 2017 Duke 390. That used to commute and tour, and this too does. No engine heat or mileage issue bothered me on both, except the fact that the Himalayan 411 was too slow to accelerate or brake for its own good. Just returned today evening from a 600 km 4 day trip to Madikeri, satisfied and being in love with the 390. Cant wait to pick up a preowned Multi 950S, so that it has some extra power and the comfort of the Skyhook, as it has a mini bombastic character like the 1200S. Shumis Muktistrada, Feroci, went to its third owner recently and boy, the story that the second owner wrote on teambhp has me itching to pick one up instead of the 950!

9:31 Totally agree and hard relate! How much a person is willing to adjust with the flaws is the most important thing cause everyone will enjoy the good bits. No bike is perfect and if the flaws start to bother too much to ruin someone’s riding experience then it’s time to upgrade your machine or maybe not buy in the first place.

On point . Really good conversation. Your point about reliability was good. I put my hard earned money from my first job and bought an RE INT 650. But every time I took that for a long drive on holidays it used to break down due to various reasons. Now a fear has set in my mind that it could create a problem if i take it for a trip. It's not meeting the purpose and it's consuming my time by taking it to the service centre and arguing with them to fix it as early as it could. I have invested 4 lakhs money on it and made me stick with it because , if i sell it .I am not gonna get a good price. But this conversation provided me to take the next move. Time is important not the machine....

I was fortunate enough that my first bike was also my dream starter bike - RTR 180. Even after the upgrade 5 years ago, I wanted to keep it because of a mountain of emotions. Years of dreaming of owning and riding one, hours and hours of watching its ads and videos, going over all its details and it was the bike I imagined it would be. Did keep it for nearly two years because I just could not part with it. It gave me a lot of joy to even just look at it parked. But as much as I loved to keep it and enjoy having it in the garage, it hurt just as much, if not more, to see it rot away. Bikes need to be run to keep them alive, (I dont mean 'working') I mean, to have life in them and I was not able to do that justice to it. And the sensible thing was to sell it which I did. And just a couple of weeks back, I saw the exact same model on the road and almost involuntarily, my mouth opened and I gazed at it for a few seconds before realizing it is somebody else's bike and that they might see this as weird. I still miss my bike badly, but fortunately the person I sold it to, said that it rides better than he expected which gives me some solace.

the small crossover i currently drive gives me joy everytime i drive it, my only need to upgrade is to get more trunk space because evrey so often i have to haul large objects. the other reason is to hopefully stop the complaints from a relative who i travel with frequently that has a baby complaining about the back seat being too small. i have access to something larger but I dont like driving it as much even though it has more tech, space, smoother and more confortable for long trips, but its boring to drive and it drinks fuel like a alchoholic.Despite that Im not thinking of shifiting my current car because when i put the key in the igintion and turn it I feel a little bit better.

I just bought a TVS Ronin as my first motorcycle and have to say that it is the perfect blend of a comfortable and good performing low-mid end motorcycle than can be bought under the 2L segment. A very good commuter (mileage 45kmpl) and can be taken to touring if you are happy with cruising at 80-100kmph. The exhaust note is plesantly bassy and it soothes the whole riding experience. I inherited a Renault Scala from my dad about 5 years ago it's a 2013 diesel car, it has been driven a total of 2.3L might have reached 3L if not for the pandemic. It is a huge car compared to cars these days. I like the way sedans drive and the diesel part but it has its maintenance issue. I am pretty sure I know I do not want my first car to be a pure petrol car, and these are my issues with others - Diesel - The government is hell-bent on killing them(Fear they might reduce the age of them as they did in Delhi), EV - Range Anxiety (hoping Curvv might change that) & Hybrids - Very Few Options (City or Grand Vitara). Your thoughts on it? Love the way you both host. Carved a niche group of listeners with very clean and informative conversation.

I was very surprised when Kartikeya mentioned people saying gaadi puraani ho gayi hai after just 3 years! We started considering that we'd need to buy a new car after our Chevy Cruze was 13 years and 8 months old & almost 250k km, and it felt like yesterday when we bought the beauty! My Ecosport was scratched at the roadside parking recently, and I was furious about it, and my father told me, calm down, be proud that your first scratch on vehicle came 3 years into the ownership and for no fault of yours.... That was the time when I realised it has been 3 years! And I still feel it's new!

43:07 Exactly what I did with the RE showroom that refused SM650 ride, I had the money and was going to pay the full amount but they judged me based on my appearance i.e. dark burnt skin as I was out on an adventure, unkempt hair, cheap clothes I have never bought clothes worth more than Rs. 2000 and still wear shirts that cost Rs. 100 from the local market. Instead I bought my childhood dream bike with well known issues, I will get a harley or some other real cruiser later skipping RE.

When i got my rtr 200 on 2018, the only non negotiable feature for me was i wanted abs I wanted matte black and fi etc and what not but back then abs was only available in 200 carb and so i decided to go carb over fi but still wanted abs The bike was sold very sparingly to dealers so had to wait for a month or two and when it still wasnt an option in my small city, i went 350 kms to dehradun to buy the first rtr 200 abs that was in uttarakhand. It was costly and yes fi was something that might have been better comp to carb but tbh i am glad i got abs You use it once or twice but thats the money well spent, my younger brother had to panic brake twice snd and it wasnt for abs he could have lost control, that day i was able to finally justify my decision to everyone.

But 5-6 months into riding my bike, on Bengaluru roads, makes me realise I should have picked something more sportier, a Pulsar N160 perhaps. Sometimes it's just a compromise I suppose, till I can afford a faster bike. 😄 Also, if you guys could do maybe a small video, on riding equipment and helmets for everyday use that'd be lovely. Karthik, you and I have had similar vehicles at various times. I have Dio that i still run and feel like upgrading from because I want more power and better riding comfort. My first car is a Nano. (That’s where the similarities end! No Busas in my garage!) It made a lot of sense as I lived in the city centre and commuting and parking was a breeze. But it’s limitation were obvious. Could not take it out on long drives, no creature comforts etc. After 6 years of just having a Nano, we bought a Kushaq because I had set my eyes on an Octavia RS when I was 19. The brand Škoda was a big pull. I still have the Nano which I find really hard to get rid of because of its practicality! Sometimes I am tempted to sell my Dio and the Nano and get a nice motorcycle! But I will never have anything small and awesome as the Nano again! Aaaarghh! 😅

@motorinc. I always loved the looks of SUv but when I drove the Scorpio or other SUVs I really couldn't enjoy it from behind the wheels. It's then when I bought a Verna and also own a Figo diesel which I love so much behind the wheels.. In this entire SUV world I still love small or sedan punchy cars as they are so quick and agile. As Shumi said will just rent an Innova as my family trips are hardly 2-3 times a year and drive fun cars that make my heart feel happy over the head. Atleast till I'm young at heart 😅
