Hullo! Thanks for joining us here! As it turned out / right after we finished this recording - Kia did confirm that there is a change in the tune for the engines to improve drivability. I think it was a much needed fix. Also - happy to see all-wheel disc brakes on the Sonet too - but didn’t really feel a difference in the conditions we were in. I'd really appreciate it if you could make a MotorInc Spark episode about road safety and car safety. I agree with your thoughts on focusing more on preventing accidents in the first place by driving well. For me, I don't consider crash test rating to help me when I mess up but more when some random drunk driver from the opposite lane crashes into you even when you drove sensibly and with good awareness.
@motorinc10 ай бұрын
That is true. However most people seem to consider that responsibility of being safe is transferred to the car and hence safer car makes you safe. Which is not the case.

In case of an accident where the car driver has very little to do yes the cars build and all of that is important. However most accidents could be avoided by the not so “common” sense! - Shumi forgot the cup holders! - The tilt is the off-center tilt of the Harrier/Safari's steering? - Are the tyres the same on diesel and petrol ? - Really love this format. Shumi's hard reasoning on cars and their features is not just hilarious but also brings important things into perspective. - Kartik's experience and hang of cars speaks for itself with the change in engine tune confirmed by Kia. - Ignis is a keeper. - Kartik, what you described was classic T2 traffic which I experience everyday. - Star ratings, is just noise as the important info is never talked about. All the info is available on BNCAP's website and I doubt if anyone bothered to read the AIS 197 specs available in the resources section. MotorInc, we need a separate episode on this and Shumi's comments are bang on point. Folks have to understand that the crash test protocols cannot be described in a short or a reel, needs way more patience and reasoning.

Just like Shumi, even I have so many questions! 1. Why do manufacturers insist on touch controls? Looking at you, Tata! Why do I have to take my eyes off the road to change the AC? 2. What is with gloss panels inside which scratch if I breathe on them? Who thought this was a good idea? 3. How hard is it to improve the sound damping? Just add more foam. 4. Why are touch screens so shitty? 5. Why do manufacturers not offer the top variant without sunroofs? Who needs a sun roof in India?

I enjoyed this episode for everything that it had especially the last part with safety discussions and Karthik's agro mode! On the Sonet ADAS, i wonder if there is a known answer to whether the intensity of steering input to lane keep assist could be changed in driver settings? I have thr camera based level 1 on my A4 here and that lets me choose the input level! PS: Shumi, for what it is worth, I think you taking up some of the air-time in Karthis's points is very nice and pleasant to see. Totally agree with you guys about the safety. While the stars are important, what is way more important is our driving. It is not just about practice like Shumi said, driving is like gym sometimes. You have your off day and your good days. If you feel you are not at your best while driving, you need stop, then make sure you put conscious effort on being attentive and then calibrate your driving accordingly. You also get better each day you drive (just like you get better in lifting weights). Eg., If I feel like I am not in the right mood for Spots mode or even the ride mode on the Ather. I will stick to eco on that day. We Indians have to agree to the fact that collectively we are not good drivers (we have a big ego and we don't accept that) and then start learning.

The end part of the conversation was gem. One of my acquaintance recently got a Nexon and was flexing on the safety aspects. I've seen the guy drive and I can assure he will crash a tank. Have a doubt here - It definitely would make a lot of difference if people got more careful while driving and thought about their actions on the road before flaunting safety ratings on the road But till that happens we do have a lot of unsafe drivers on the road and is that not exactly a reason why you need a safer car for yourself? Because my safety on the road is not just a consequence of my driving but of others as well, having a better safety rated car would be safer for me or is there not a big difference between 1 star and 5 star rated cars(genuinely curious here)?
@suryateja2k1110 ай бұрын
53:09 Discipline and driving sense is the most important safety aspect everyone forgets and blabbers about crash test ratings. We have a WagonR. Yes its body is "Tin ka dabba" and some stupid crashed into our car and there were few dents out there. But I love that car for its ease of driving as a beginner. And one needs to have cautious behaviour while on the road. I feel frustrated when someone cuts me while I'm driving or suddenly comes ahead of me without any indication. This is called indiscipline which unfortunately our traffic system is unable to deal with. Also what Karthik told is true. People having a call while driving/riding just distracts their attention span and mishaps happen instantaneously. I think someone needs to address all these issues and teach us how to drive/ride well on a road and only then after people can rant about crash test ratings. Also people showoff saying their car is a 5 star rated or their helmet has ece certification so they're invincible but they forget the most important aspect that keeps them in shape that is locking helmet strap or wearing seat belt. Unless they wear them, there's no 5 star safety or an ece certification that saves you after a crash. People need to learn these little things to understand how safety works in the first place.

Honestly i do partially agree with you in regards to the safety as driving properly is at the forefront. however one thing i like to point out is that the safety features are for "safety". So just because you are driving properly and follow the rules doesn't mean someone else in the road will and it also doesn't mean that he cannot come and crash into you. So its better to have safety features and have safer car as an insurance.

@@motorincyeah absolutely as a driver my responsibility is to drive safe but the dynamic environment while driving in India is much more complex and can cause errors which can cause accidents and for that accident for that one mistake that one instance a 5 star rated car is a much better option rather than a 1 star rated car to ensure seamless survival in the accident because everyone how accidents can destroy a person’s life provided the speed is below 70 km/h at time of collision. Hello, one question, which is best buying advice, getting top end Sonet turbo petrol dct or for the same price should I get mid varient of Seltos?
@motorinc10 ай бұрын
Do you need the extra space? If yes - then the Selstos is an excellent pick. It can also be a car you can hold onto for longer. And the mid spec may have a few features lesser - but the size makes it more satisfying. Let us know if you have any specific needs/wants - would be happy to discuss.

Hi @motorinc, Would you suggest Nexon's DCA or Sonet's DCT. I believe Sonet has dry clutch DCT and it can be a problem for Indian weather. I am aware of the good practices on how to drive a DCT but still worry about their failure. Tata has changed the DCT and they are calling it DCA. They are sourcing it from a company called Punch Powertrain. It is a Wet Clutch (but friction elements are not oil immersed so as to avoid power loss and preserve efficiency) with Single Input Shaft and Planetary Gears that has resulted in 30% less components than traditional DCT. Tata also says it has Self Healing Mechanism to clear off dust. For a family car to be driven for next 8-10 years in a metropolitan city with occasional trips(once every 2-3 months), would you suggest Nexon DCA or Sonet DCT when it comes to long term reliability, smoothness and mileage.

For me, safety is not about having a crash and escaping from it, but stopping the car from having a crash. Some companies are more eager to send cars to crash tests than to do proper R&D to ensure everything works properly. These cars breakdown on the next day of purchase.
@motorinc10 ай бұрын
Hey AP! Exactly - the crash should be the last line of defense - avoiding it involves safety aids and better driving.

Wow! So many things that you explained, all the other reviewers of sonet have missed absolutely! Own the first gen Turbo petrol DCT! Really great that they fixed the suspension! Also great that the arm rest at the back seat is back! Looks really good from the rear but from the front i think it looks a bit like the Xuv 300/700. I feel that the Front could have been a little unique and different looking!

So I have a “versus” question for the Sonnet! 😅 We are family of 4 living in Pune with our indie dog who travels with us almost everywhere. We drive around 30k kms per year. I was looking for a 60:40 split for sure hence was looking at Seltos. Specifically diesel automatic (upgrading from Vento DSG diesel) However the sonnet has the 60:40 now. So a topend Sonnet vs a HTX Seltos Views please @SirKart
@simarjeetsingh679010 ай бұрын
Go with seltos htx It's a bigger car for 5 so it makes for your family of four and your dog whereas sonet is more of a four seater so assuming your kids sit in the rear seat along with the dog it would not be as good an experience in the sonet Considering budget is not an issue
@motorinc10 ай бұрын
That is an excellent option! The bigger vehicle will be very helpful since it’s 4 + 🐶!
@dhinji10 ай бұрын
Thanks for touching on all important topics. Recently I booked turbo dct htx after putting a lot of thought for not going with diesel imt. It is true in almost all showrooms that they don't have the complete info on the changes that was made in this facelift. Just not sure on mileage figures for Sonet dct as it largely depends on the way we drive (my opinion). Still having second thoughts on not picking Baleno AMT just for the mileage as I also wanted an SUVish car with higher stance. And that my travel requirement is 80:20 ( Highway/city). Wanted to understand what will I get if I choose Sonet over Baleno (leaving aside the okish mileage).
@motorinc10 ай бұрын
The Baleno will have the better fuel efficiency no matter what. It is very impressive on this front. Do check out our View vid on the Glanza if you haven’t already. If you highway usage is higher then the FE gap will be much narrower. And for the lavish experience - the Sonet is right on top. Hope that helps!

Hi @MotorInc, Is the noise isolation better overall and at highway speeds compared to pre facelift one ?
@motorinc10 ай бұрын

@vigneshs459510 ай бұрын
The price of Turbo petrol DCT Sonet is almost equal to a mid spec Taigun TC or a Creta CVT. Should you give up on the Sonet features and go for the bigger car?
@motorinc10 ай бұрын
By default, our recommendation would be the bigger car - it will be more useful for longer. However, if your need is for a small car or a second car - then the Sonet would fit better.
@rahilmukudh761910 ай бұрын
Hello, could you please let us know how if the 1.2ltr NA is worth it? Or do we need to stretch a bit and go for the turbo? Also would love to know if the KIA IMTs are reliable.
@motorinc10 ай бұрын
Please stretch for the turbo! It will make this indulgence so much more worthwhile! As for iMT - we haven’t heard of any issues with it - and remember it is just like a manual transmission - so it’s not complicated.

Which variant?
@Vishnu-B10 ай бұрын
I do agree that we must drive well first before writing off cars based solely on safety ratings. And also on the point that, we should be proactive and preventive in our approach to safety as opposed to wanting to drive a tank. But we cant completely neglect crash ratings either. As mentioned by others, even if we are driving responsibly in the event of someone else crashing into us, or any other scenario involving a crash, we need cars that are as strong as they can be... because having safer car would be a question of small injury vs miaming OR a question of life and death...
@motorinc10 ай бұрын
Hey Vishnu, the point we want to stress on is you can’t trade your responsibility of driving safe because you bought a safe car. Worryingly, that seems to be the common assumption.
@abhisheknair286310 ай бұрын
@@motorincyou are assuming that people buy a car with higher rating because they want to drive rashly. There are many unpredictable situations that a driver can encounter during a drive, especially a longer drive on unfamiliar roads, expecting the driver to be able to account for all of that is impractical. I find it quite surprising that someone as knowledgeable as you would discount safety so easily and readily criticise the drivers.
@Vishnu-B3 ай бұрын
@@motorinc As mentioned in the first line of my comment, the responsibility of driving well comes first (for me) but on top of that, I want the best possible safety for my family. In the off-chance of an accident, if a serious injury can be reduced to a minor injury by having a 5 star car instead of a 2 or a 3 star car, I would say thats a no-brainer. That does not mean, I will drive carelessly looking to cause accidents. Accidents bina hamare galti ke bhi ho jaate hai. Poochke thodi hote hai accidents. Besides people who think they can drive recklessly because they have a 5 star car are the exception, not the norm and deserve to be ignored at the least. And the point made in this video, summarised by your saying - "you can’t trade your responsibility of driving safe because you bought a safe car" applies to buying safer helmets also and by that logic we should be ok with and stick to just the minimum ISI standard helmets... so if someone is wearing a ECE helmet with riding gear, will you also automatically assume he will ride recklessly and cause accidents?
