Cambridge is a wonderful city yet somehow ended up with some of the, what appear to be, most pointless pieces of road infrastructure.. if you can call it that.
In this episode we look at possibly the smallest roundabout in the UK, and also, the smallest double yellow lines... measuring in at mere inches.

These short double yellow lines are common and are there to make it clearer to drivers that the bays on either side have different parking restrictions. On King's Street one side is residents only, the other is pay and display.

If that is in fact the point of the double yellow lines, it falls flat on its face. I've been driving since 1997, and have driven in every major town in the UK, and I did not look at them and think "I wonder if there are different parking restrictions on each side". My thoughts were more along the lines "the person who arranged for these to be painted is woefully out of touch". But in all seriousness, thanks for the explanation.

If that's the case, then the Highways Agency needs to come up with a much better indication - If I saw any section of „Double Yellows“ that was shorter than the length of a bus and not protecting an obvious access I'd disregard it as _redundant, pending removal._ A solid thick (6" or more) yellow line perpendicular to the kerb in a form that clearly communicates _„Parking rules change here“_ would be a much more sensible approach. 🚘🇬🇧👍

More roundabouts please, Skem has loads of them including one that's half a mile, some people use to believe it was a mile, sadly not. but is it home to the town with the most roundabouts, needs some investigation... I gave up giving directions to poor lost drivers as a two minute trip would easily include at least four and you see the will to live drain from their faces as they drowned in confusion. I think it was deigned this way to keep the re-homed scousers from returning to their home land. Legend has it that the local {name escapes me now} diy store in Old Skem were responsibly for making them...

The rules on a mini roundabout are exactly the same as a full sized one. The exception being you're allowed to go *over* it if your vehicle is too big to go round - ie. Bus or Lorry.

Maybe not meant, but not illegal, and sometimes it's the easiest and safest option to turn around. Is 3 point U-turn better in the middle of the road? I was taught that you could U-turn but other drivers wouldn't expect this.

It’s not the shortest, but there is a bizarre double-yellow in Sidmouth Street, Devizes - opposite Sainsbury’s between a loading bay and a chicaned pedestrian crossing (clearly visible on Google Street View). You’d be hard pressed to park a Smart car in the space. I can’t fathom why they didn’t just extend the loading bay, especially as the disabled persons’ bay on the other side of the road does exactly that.

At first, I thought the double yellows were about center divider lines and why Europe doesn't use yellow. When I lived in Germany, it was very difficult to tell the difference between two-way and one-way roads without any other indicators, seeing as how all the lines are painted white. I once turned onto a one-way going the wrong way in town because there were no signs or parked cars, until I finally saw traffic coming the other way. With a yellow line across the street, I would have easily known I needed to make a right instead of a left. I am also shocked you said inches and not centimeters.

To say the roundabout is crazy shows you don't understand the main points of, especially, mini roundabouts. They serve two functions: 1) improved glow through a junction as no one road had priority, and 2) [theoretically] improve safety along a road by forcing traffic to slow down to negotiate them. The effect of 2 in improving safety comes from the need to potentially have to give way and so drivers ought to be slowing down to potentially stop but with an eye to going _if_ the way is clear. However this effect is being lost as drivers just hurtle towards them to fly straight through the junction[1] and over them (an illegal act in at least two ways: Road Trafiic Act 1988 (as amended) sections 2&3, and Traffic Signs Regulations & General Directions regs 16(1) [row 5], 25(5)). [1] on the basis "I'm approaching from the right and you must give way to me, but reg 25(5) clearly states "requirement shall be that no vehicle shall proceed past such one of those lines [give way lines]...in a manner or at a time likely to endanger the driver of or any passenger in a vehicle *circulating past that road marking **_from the right_** of the first-mentioned vehicle..."*
@PaulMichael1084
@PaulMichael1084 Жыл бұрын
@@cigmorfil4101 To write such a reply leads me to respectfully draw your attention to the following points; 1) Glowing has nothing to do with roundabouts. Unless maybe someone has hurtled towards it, flown straight over the junction, crashed and is currently ablaze causing the roundabout to glow in the reflected light. 2) We have a name for people like you where I come from. Technical Richard. 3) The safety effects of such a small roundabout are "lost as drivers hurtle towards them, and fly straight through the junction" as you so helpfully point out. Given this fact, you rather neatly prove the premis of the video. That being that such a small roundabout is clearly ludicrous. 4) Are you in fact the chap from the Vauxhall Tigra advert from about 20 years ago? I'll go away and try to find a link for anyone too young to remember it. UPDATE - I have been away and located said advert, here you go kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6nMi5JvjJumkMk 5) The fact that our host (@AutoShenanigans) leaves comments such as yours up, shows a strength of character on his part, for his willingness to endure people such as yourself. 6) I believe it is YOU that has missed the point here. ITS A BIT OF FUN - LIGHTEN UP! If you want to watch 'dull as dishwasher' videos of long winded explanations of the Road Traffic Regulations, amended or otherwise, go find a channel that specialises in re-running public information films, or 1970s Open University programs. In the States, and I presume often in the UK, the double yellows are omitted and motorists simply understand that the idea is to encourage parallel parkers to leave enough room for other drivers to get out of a neighboring parking space. Whether the double yellow was present or not, the implication is that "THESE" are the parking spots, and don't overlap the marked areas. However, one doubts that Cambridge details staff to ticket anyone that encroaches outside the marked space.
@TangoVictorSierra

Most UK parking bays at the side of the road are just long continuous parts of the road that have a single dashed line at the side, few have lines to mark how much space a single vehicle gets.
@pacificostudios
@pacificostudios 2 жыл бұрын
@@TangoVictorSierra - That's the case in the States, too. RED is the most common "No Parking" color. However, other than to keep the way clear around fire hydrants, we're just not that strict here. You will often see drivers pace off the distance from a corner, for instance, because the general law is that one cannot park closer than 30 feet from a corner. I've heard British comics make jokes about the strictness of parking rules in Britain, and it feels a bit, well, "foreign."

@@richard99cookify Thank you - but then why would such a prohibition be applied to the particular location John is measuring at time 2:20? There's no fire hydrant or other obvious reason visible along the adjacent sidewalk. Also, might that car receive a ticket because its bumper is over the lines? In the US, sometimes the curb itself is painted yellow (or red) to indicate a no parking zone, though stopping or standing may still be allowed depending on how it is signed. Where the curbs are not painted, arrows on the signs are used to indicate where a regulated zone begins and ends.
@richard99cookify
@richard99cookify 2 жыл бұрын
@@ElmerCat Fire hydrant zones are typically indicated with a yellow kerb I think. The double yellows at 2:20 - ignore them, this is a bizarre case of them being used and they never would normally be in this kind of situation (likely error by the authorities). Typically double yellows are used on busy roads where parking would be a bit of an obstruction With regards to vehicles parking - it depends where the wheels are. If your wheels are not in physical contact with double yellow lines but the car overhangs them it doesn't matter.

@alanmichael5619 Жыл бұрын
@@ElmerCat Well that's kind of the point. It's a very silly use of double yellow lines. In the UK we use double yellows for "no parking", single yellows for "no parking during specific hours" (which are accompanied by signs indicating the rules on parking there), double reds for "no stopping", single reds for "no stopping at certain times". Double reds are far rarer and we usually have a sign for no stopping - but they are common in places like London. I think the reason that painting the curb never really caught on in the UK (unlike the US) is that we have a lot of occasions where double yellows are necessitated - but where there is no curb.

Mini roundabouts have the most stupid rule of anything. You must go around it unless, you can’t! That’s the rule. There are more accidents caused by idiots trying to do a U turn which of course you were never supposed to do until, the rules changed to be the same as a roundabout. The original rule was best, treat as a roundabout, for priority reason, but no need to go around it. Dead simple and actually dead safe. Of course The Magic Roundabout in Swindon defies all logic when driving something 50 feet long!
