Lux Modellbau Schienenschleifwagen Track Cleaner unboxing
Track cleaning is my least favourite part of model railways, hopefully this motorised track cleaner is the answer!

I have a Tomix cleaner car for my N-Scale train set, can't get it to sit right on the track with the other attachments so I just use the vacuum mode.

Looks a good piece of kit, "looks like a vintage soap container", maybe you're too young to remember there was indeed a soap called LUX, ah well showing my age I guess, I don't even think your Dad remembers that product! I use a Tomix for my N gauge railway, I had to get it converted to DCC, but it does a good job, cheers, Dave

Ha ha, I'll have to google the lux soap, I don't remember it even though I did hit the big 40 this year! Thanks for watching 👍

One question...Do you have to change the cleaning pad everytime you use it?

Hello Simon, as you have now had this piece of kit for several months now, can you tell me if you feel it was a worthwhile purchase or not please? Like you i have a fairly large layout with a lot of concealed track which is getting more and more difficult to access for cleaning. Thanks Phil

how do u change the cleaning pads and do you get spares in the box? I'm never really sure if these cleaning wagons work tbh or if it's just the loco pulling or pushing it round that cleans the track anyway... plus does the cleaning pad have enough downward force on the rail to really clean the dirt?
@InterCity134
@InterCity134 6 жыл бұрын
The pads get replaced once they are saturated with dirt and oil, though it 'looks' like you can rotate the wheels (flip them) to get double uses out of the existing ones. Replacement pads (Art.-Nr. 9417) are available around 6€ for a new pair of them. One can also get rotors with sand paper of 280grit and 1500grit if one has rusted or really baddly gunked up rails, but those are abbrasive. There is also a cleaning and polishing wheel set that likely has a polishing compound in it which wold be between the plain felt rotors and the sanding rotors. The rotors are also height adjustable which I suppose just adjust the pressure exerted based on the weight of the thing.

You just unscrew the nut on the cleaning pad wheels to change the pads. There are no spares provided. Judging by the dirt on the pad and how well the loco ran after cleaning it seems to be doing the job.

Does this product require a particularly powerful engine to pull it?

It is worth it . Felt a bit guilty upon buying it , but now I am very glad . I drive mine upfront . As for the alcohol , I clean with a smoke fluid Seuthe . Not only that it cleans , but it preserves the track for longer period of driving without cleaning . I was very sceptical about this idea , but now I am sure that it works .

I have been looking for something like this for a while. The Tomix one is similar idea ,a lot cheaper but not DCC ready . Some of the ones available in the USA are also cheaper but have KADee fittings and I am unsure if they are DCC ready. In the meantime I have ordered a Minitrix track cleaning coach with pads and will see how that works before explore the LUX or other makes.
@SimonsShed
@SimonsShed 6 жыл бұрын
Yes I have searched before many times and the price always stopped me but so far I'm pleased with the Lux one. If the Minitrix coach does the job for you then its a big saving over the Lux cleaner 👍

Just put the cleaning wagon first so it's clean for the train since the train is the thing propelling the wagon

Hi Simon, nice track cleaning car. Greg from Fishplate Films, also uses 2 types of other fluids on his rails and has no troubles with bad contact. Lanolin and Linox Greg swears by them. You have to make rail cleaning as easy as possible. Thank you for another great video. Re Gary

Hi Gary, yes it just spoils the fun if the trains aren't running reliably, its been much better since I started using this wagon. I'll have to look into Lanolin and Linox and give them a try when my IPA runs out. Thanks for watching 👍

Looks great but like you said a little expensive, and Tomix make one with a sanding disk ant it also vacuums the track at the same time, no decoder though, but Mike Fifer has a vidio on how to install one , they also have pads you can attach to a car that uses alcohol from Woodland Scenic's, some one makes a tank car that holds that alcohol drips on the pad, a little expensive though but does a great job, one more thing, try and pushing it in front of the engine as the engine will be on the clear track, to bad no one makes a unit that looks like a maintenance away cars, guess we could always kitbashing one, thanks for sharing. ..

Yes pushing the wagon makes more sense as the rail should be cleaner by the time the loco reaches it. It doesn't look very prototypical does it...especially with the roof sections removed! At this point I'm just glad it does the job, thanks for watching 👍
@InterCity134
@InterCity134 6 жыл бұрын
Lux also makes a vacuuming car as a seperate element. The spinning felt rotors and required motor mean they cannot fit that cleaning/polishing kit and the vacuum into one car. On my end (H0 though) I've got a service train that will do that polishing, followed by the brush fitted vaccum with a magnetic pickup to collect any iron bits as well.

Simon your so-called green capacitors look more like batteries used to drive the motor. That black and grey can next to them is defiantly a smoothing capacitor.
@SimonsShed
@SimonsShed 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve, it did say batteries somewhere (on a review I read or the Lux Modelbau website) but I thought it was a mis-translation...I guess they are rechargeable as there are pickups on the wheels. Either way, I'm glad it works even if not sure how!

Thanks Neil, yes it would probably be overkill for a single loop 😀 I will do some more Shed Squad live streams in the future, but I've been spending the time working on the layout and editing the videos recently 👍

Apparently this one is the best you can buy, its miles better than that blue tomix japanese one, this one in yellow would be PERFECT for my class 37 colas network rail train, would match it very nicely. IPA is no good for this it will evaporate too quick, use GOOGONE

Your cleaning car's not fitting under the bridge, what I do is use a tall train car to test the clearance before constructing the bridge or tunnel. Usually an autorack or a double stacked well car.
