Even with a regular marine battery and three people I would be out for over an hour with two adults and two kids.

My first attempt was a major fail because I simply used toggle bolts and silicone, and the boat leaked and took on water. So after that, I literally took the entire boat apart and ended up using three-quarter inch starboard on the inside of the boat and then I ran bolts through the brackets for the wheels then the boat and the starboard material. I used bolts and washers and silicone on all areas and I haven’t had a problem with it since. While the boat was completely apart, I also took that opportunity to run wires on all four sides of the boats for lights and incorporated LED lights on the inside of the boat as well. Hi John, I enjoyed watching your video and I ordered the wheels for my pedal boat. Did you have to take out every staple to get access to the inside of the hull or just the ones in the rear? After mounting the wheels how did you put the staples back in? Awesome job on your boat!
@johnmiller9709
@johnmiller9709 2 ай бұрын
I ended up taking out every single staple around the entire boat because I also ran wires for lights. I have six lights around the outside perimeter of the boat front and rear running. Lights are also wired through the boat and I also have some LED lights on the inside of the boat, so that was helpful with the wiring to put the boat back together with new staples. I ended up buying a gun for over 300 bucks and I’d be interested in selling it for $100. I only used it for this project so it was pretty arduous and you have to be patient but it’s pretty cool once it’s done.

Nice! How did you know where to drill holes to mount the wheels? Been looking for a schematic of the internal frame...
@johnmiller9709
@johnmiller9709 2 ай бұрын
There is no internal frame for this boat. It’s just two pieces of plastic top and bottom, glued and stapled together. I simply put the wheels where I thought they would fit the best. Yes, I literally took the boat completely apart and put three-quarter inch starboard on the inside of the boat and then bolted it through the outside of the boat with silicone on both sides and then used nut washers on the inside of the boat. It’s very sturdy once I did that.

Hi John. Nice build! Couple of questions. Firstly, I went with a little 8 foot Sundolphin boat. Similar construction with the halves being stapled together. I understand how you attached the wheels, but I'm very leery of putting holes in the hull. Are you having any water problems and/or did you add drain plugs? I really want permanent wheels and a little bored with having to ratchet strap the ones I made, on and off all the time. Also, I'm not familiar with what starboard is.....other than being the nautical term for "right". Thanks, and again, nice job!
@johnmiller9709
@johnmiller9709 Жыл бұрын
I have had no leaks at all since installing the starboard on the inside of the boat and putting bolts through the material and the boat. Starboard is a plastic that cuts and drills like wood and is often used for marine projects. Here is a link to buy it. a.co/d/73ckRnG There is a drain plug located in the front of the boat and that was factory installed. I used marine silicone between the starboard and the hull. Since this video I also took out the paddle and pedals and simply used marine silicone and small plastic circles to cover the holes inside and out.

I put rubber washers on each side of the bolts to create a waterproof seal where I mounted the motor. As far as running the wires, I took the boat apart completely, which was a huge project and was an even bigger project putting it back together. It did allow me a fantastic opportunity to simply run the wires anywhere I wanted to under the boat and up through a mounted switch that I can send you a video of in the future. Awesome build hey I was wondering about a question you answered about the wheels and was wanted to know how hard was it to take apart the boat to install the starboard thanks
@johnmiller9709
@johnmiller9709 2 жыл бұрын
It was very difficult and it took hours to take the boat apart and put it back together. I had to remove 180 staples each of them by hand with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. Once you have the boat apart you can run wiring and add switches and lights and all kinds of great stuff like that in addition to adding the starboard. This is some thing I did that is not in this video at this time. Putting it together is also difficult because I had to buy a staple gun that was strong enough to drive Staples through the plastic of each part of the boat. In addition putting the rubber strip around the outside edge is also difficult because you have to heat it with a heat gun in order to stretch and pull it properly so that it fits around the entire perimeter of the boat.

@@johnmiller9709 Wow ! Nice wheels but $159/pair ? I have to find something less expensive. This is just crazy ! Great build, will start the project soon ! Just found a slightly used pedal boat locally and already have a trolling motor, mounts, etc. so I'm excited to start it soon.

Have u hit the water
@johnmiller9709
@johnmiller9709 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I hit the water and nearly sunk the sucker. Unfortunately, the 1/8" toggle bolts and marine silicone I used to secure the wheel brackets to the back let go while in the water and the entire inside filled with water. I basically had eight 3/8" holes in the back of the boat taking on water. The good news is that even if this vessel fills up with water it does not sink. The solution is going to be me separating the top and bottom of the boat getting in the inside and using a piece of rectangular plywood on the inside of the boat while attaching the wheel brackets on the outside of the boat using bolts, washers, and locknuts along with silicone. This should definitely do the job however I need to go out and purchase or rent a "plier stapler" to reattach the top to bottom of the boat that is pneumatic in order to do the job. The staples that hold the top and bottom of the boat together are 5/8 of an inch long and I will have to remove each of the staples and then reapply them with this pneumatic device. To purchase it is around $360. and I haven't found a place that will rent one yet. Doing this will give me an opportunity to run the wires on the inside of the boat as well. I may even add some switches since I'm doing this. I know what everyone's thinking at this point! I should've just gone out and bought a boat! LOL However, I do enjoy doing projects like this and making the impossible, possible.

@@fishingismydrug1 Thanks for the tip on the rivets instead of staples however I do have the stapler now and removed the over 180 staples out by hand last weekend. Here is a link to the vessel registration abbreviations. You would think they would be the same as the state abbreviations but someone had some extra time on their hands. www.ncwildlife.org/Portals/5/documents/state_prefixes.pdf

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t realize that. Lol. One of my motivations for moving forward with this project was that I simply wanted to be able to get out onto the water and spend some time wherever I wanted. The benefit of this boat is that I can strap it to the ceiling in my garage in my condominium. I don't have a yard to store a regular boat in, and I don't have to pay for additional storage for a boat. It's handy and available whenever I want it, and it just drops right down on top of my car, so I can take it to any body of water without any storage fees or motor maintenance.

Hi James, great to hear from you again. I hope you have a blessed day! Read below... my answers are written in all caps. hey thanks for listening all the products that you bought. YOU ARE WELCOME Make sure and the new video to tell how many of each item you bought. Some things are obviously only one but some of them I wasn't sure if you need too or maybe more. WHAT SPECIFIC ITEMS ARE YOU NOT SURE OF? Also, show how you lower the Bimini top and are able to open and close a standard garage door with that thing sitting up against the ceiling. HERE IS A VIDEO THAT SHOWS YOU HOW TO RAISE AND LOWER A BIMINI TOP kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZ2QoYKtir2Uepo I USE A 4 POINT PULLEY SYSTEM AND IT IS LISTED IN THE LINKS I PROVIDED AND I AM INCLUDING IT AGAIN RIGHT HERE - Garage Storage Ceiling Hoist | 4 Point System www.amazon.com/dp/B000K10A4K/... I LOWER THE BIMINI TOP BEFORE RAISING IT TO THE CEILING. Also does the motor mounts interfere with the ability of the rudder to turn completely in case your battery dies and you really do need the paddle back. NO Thanks for showing how you did that. I did not know that they even made Parts like that for some of them. YOU ARE MOST WELCOME Also how long of a motor extension handle you got. I CAN SEE HOW YOU ARE CONFUSED ABOUT THIS AS THE EXTENSION HANDLE ACTUALLY EXTENDS ITSELF FROM 24" TO 40" AND THE LINK TO BUY IT IS ALSO IN THE LIST ABOVE, HERE IT IS AGAIN IF YOU MISSED IT.
