Wow, that was a tricky repair, from what I saw at least, but I agree with you there. If you can replace the flexible plastic display (which, let's be honest, is going to be nigh on impossible for a Samsung folding device), it deserves more than 1/10. And to give the iPhone 14 7/10 when it has software-paired components that no one can replace? Yeah, these repair scores are amiss.

"software-paired components that no one can replace" oh you can replace them, it's just really difficult. Like soldering over ICs from old to new screen, spot-welding old BMS to new battery and replacing dot projector on FaceID. It's not easy, but doable. And many shops do it every day. Although some customers don't even care if they lose the battery health info or get warning messages. All in all, an iPhone with unpaired parts is still 99% usable.

Maybe they only rate how hard it is to physically replace components not caring if they actually work afterwards. I had to replace the battery on the Iphone SE2 and replacing the bms was definitely mor difficult than just the whole battery and I would give the phone a 2/10. Really not properly repairable for a normal user.

Separating the display is like heart surgery. I was hoping there's an option with a frame display attached to it. I'm impressed that old display still works.

The fact the old display, even after seemingly being stretched in unnatural ways when he worked to remove it, still displays just as well as before removal, can be seen as a testimony to OLED's flexibility and durability. As he said, it's very likely it's only the ribbon cable that's damaged. Even the new one, when he tried to lift it to readjust its position and started to bend it, still works and shows no display issue. OLED is remarkably resilient. Flex cables? Not so much.

Avoiding the problem you experienced with the display sticking too early is probably why the adhesive backing comes off into parts. If you just remove the lower part it'll allow you to align the screen at the top properly without it sticking before you're ready. You could then adhere the bottom part then remove the backing from the top part and adhere it afterward.

Hugh you are a phone fixer professional. A folding screen has a built failure mode for nothing. Hard to fix, dumb ribbon cable. Even in Sci-Fi no one was crazy enough to show a bendy folding screen. Basically a question nobody asked, or cares about. The best phones, like the best poker hands, never fold. Love your work Hugh, keep it up.

Plus side is Verizon only has a "60 day lock policy," on phones bought from them(60 days after activation), after that it is removed automatically(unless the device is deemed stolen or purchased fraudulently). This includes devices with e-sims too.

Well sprint does have a lock policy around the same but last I knew it wasn't auto-unlocked and requires you to go through all the steps with contacting them/etc to get them to unlock it. As if you don't do all that it'll just sit there locked to their network forever and they won't do anything about it.

I noticed that when you tested the old screen the last time that it had gone back to just the 1 purple line down the middle instead of the 1 purple and several green ones, so they weren’t a permanent damage.

You can get those screens repaired now, the laser systems cost a lot around $1300 US but are the same ones used to make traces for oled screens.

For whatever reason, most carrier phones in the US require to be connected to the carrier to receive updates. Speculation on my part suggests that it's due to the fact that carrier models get carrier provisions provided through software updates, which means updates come from carrier servers rather than from the manufacturer. It's not always required, but I find it finds updates better being on network. Regardless, Verizon's website puts that as the last update as well. It's a shame that the phone was only officially supported with security updates for two years.

Motorola's approach to software drives me absolutely insane. I like their stuff. Their phones feel pretty well built, usually better than Samsungs in the same price bracket, but they are so quick to abandon updates it makes me mad. I bought their Motorola One as soon as it came out. Their Android One phone. Per Google's Android One program directive, these devices are supposed to get at least 2 years of OS upgrades and 3 years of security patches. My Motorola One, for instance, sits in the 2-year window for Android 11. Still running Android 10, even though 11 has been out since september of 2020. Every single time I reached out to them asking about the release of Android 11, they told me there's no date yet. The phone doesn't even show in their online update checker anymore. To be honest at this point I just want them to acknowledge they're not releasing it, and then I'll probably sue their asses for false advertising. The latest security patch for Android 10 is dated october 2021. Exactly 3 years after the device's release. Such a scam. Motorola does not put any effort into maintaining this stuff and Google, who certified the device as part of their Android One program, does not seem to care.

Got a v2 and both screens broke..external fell and case saved the outside hut the inside dead .than the edge if the internal screen started peeling from the corner esge and eventually went bad..only works on light full blast but sketchy. need to see how much the labor costs to install new parts..if more thab its worth after parts and labor ill wait for the newer models to drop in price more

With the current tech available in China, pink/green lines appearing on OLED/Flex OLED displays can now be fixed without removing it entirely on the phone. But it will take time to go available in public. So possible, the repairability of those phones with same issue on displays can be fixed easily. Also, nice job on the nerve-wrecking screen replacement. To be honest, it seems scary, not to mention that almost all flex OLED Panels are too sensitive every removal happened on the device.

FYI: (Pure, 99+%) Alcohol does not cause water-damage on electronics. It does not corrode metals (pins, traces, etc.) and it does also not create conductive ions and thus will not become conductive, even if it comes in contact with dirt or other particles. So it is 100% safe to use on electronics, even if voltage is present. It might leave a visible residue however, so it can cause problems, when it get's into the layers of a screen.
