I'm currently writing this with samsung galaxy7s which i got secondhand about 7, 8 years ago. Had one repair from cracked screen (dropped from 2nd floor balcony) and battery change few years ago which costed about 50 bucks in USD. Works fine now. I was an apple user before this one and not a very big fan of samsung, but they do make damn durable phones. Gotta give then that. Their phone sales is probably underrated due to slower repeat customers like me.

Ok so if we play that game of anecdotal evidence is law, I had 2 screen replacements in 1 year on my Samsung s6 edge and the back glass destroyed from a small drop in the bathroom on my Samsung S10e, conversely my iphone 12 mini lasted 2.5 years without even a scratch, by your rules Samsung is weak ass and Apple is super strong no?

Guess you're a iphone fan then. I was too before the battery crisis which really pissed me off and I'm not going back. Im not trying to make a point here but If you dont like personal experiences just put it this way. Samsung is mostly made in Veitnam and iPhones are made in China. And like most people around the world I wouldn't expect much from QC for anything made in China.

I appreciate such an in depth test. I got the razr at release and last week the internal screen died. It's being repaired for free right now and in the meantime, i just put my SIM back in my flip 3. The razr lasted me about three months of regular use and almost paranoid care. I love the look so so so much more than the flip 5, but if and when the razr screen dies again, I'll be seeking a refund and switching to the flip -_-

well if you fold-unfold it continuously, it will create heat and will most likely break quicker that usual daily usage. one good example, try doing it with a wire.
@solidsnake6405
@solidsnake6405 2 ай бұрын
Wire or any other metal doesn't break simply because you bend it over and over repeatedly in quick Succession. It will break at the same amount of bends regardless of how close or far apart the bends occur. Anytime something is bent it has both tension and compressive forces applied which generates some amount of heat(energy in always generates heat out) but i do believe doing this test in a short time frame will heat up the screen more so then normally would occur which could have an impact on the test and is something that should have been taken into account. But this video is just a general indicator of what to expect. So a good 2-3 years should be expected out of the device.

I love my RAZR and will be extra careful with it. It lives in a case and I don't play in a sandbox or take it in water. Still your test is a reminder to take extra care and to keep it clean. My Flip 3 screen never failed but the screen protector had to be replaced twice. It would be great if all flipping phones kept track of how many folds you have on your phone. There's an idea for an app.

@@GeordieHalma I have had the Flip 3 for three years and although I had screen issues twice I still enjoyed it. I love the form factor. I have had many phones including Samsungs, Motos all the way back to the brick phones. I had Note 1,2,4 and 5. The reviews for the new RAZR + were very positive from reviewers I trust. I was going to order the Flip 5 but projected price in the US phone was $1000 for 128 Gigs, with no DEX. I contacted Samsung many times to find out more details. They NEVER ANSWERED ME. Moto was starting with 256 gig, and their version of Dex. I was also offered $1000 trade in for the Razr at my Carrier. So I'm up for 24 months of this phone and I believe it will be fine as I take care of my phones. Growing up in the late fifties and sixties , high tech was my transistor radio. Bottom, line is I like the Flip phones including Samsung. They lost my business because they didn't respond to my questions.😂

I had zero issues with my Flip 3 for over a year. When I got the flip 4, it broke 4 times in 6 months. Three of the times was from the hinge. So now I'm debating going to the Flip 5 and hoping its fixed or switching to the Moto Razr. Or sticking with my Pixel 7 Pro

People are overlooking the fact that you absolutely have to flip the samsung phone to get any serious usage out of it. Motorola, you can do almost anything you want on the front screen. I think it even runs nova launcher. So you would not have to flip it nearly as often. Samsung is stopping really stingy and only letting you use widgets
@michaelcorcoran8768
@michaelcorcoran8768 9 ай бұрын
@GeordieHalma But the flip five doesn't even let you use the front Screen for anything except widgets. You absolutely have to open the phone to do anything with it. And there is no desktop mode. The motorola to me is the Superior option because you don't even need to open the phone to use it however you want. You could run A third party launcher on the front screen if you wanted to. To be clear, i'm not going to buy either of them. But if I had to choose one , the motorola is the more compelling option because of the front screen. Samsung only letting you use widgets on front is suspicious. I suspect in flip 6 they will let you do anything to make flip 5 owners feel compelled to upgrade again

I would say get whichever phone you like better. I just dont see many people having issues with the hinges on either phone. The screen is what's going to give you the most grief. If you get any kind of grit the size of sand or bigger and shut the phone, the screen will be lucky to survive. I had a zflip 2 and i had to have samsung replace the screen for this very reason. I did preorder the z flip 5,with no gap now, just hoping it does not end the same as my last z flip.

That is the reason why samsung doesn't really rush to introduce a completely flat inner foldable display that closes completely with zero gap like other players in the market...they are a big company with huge R&D money to know the compromises users would experience if the tech are still not perfectly tuned to overcome the existing problems with foldable designs...when other companies rush for profit money samsung still focuses on investing money perfecting the tech, hence the hefty price tag.
@MandrakeDCR
@MandrakeDCR 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, you wouldn't want to rush something foldadble with a hefty price tag to market that wasn't ready, like the first Galaxy Fold or something drastic like that... lol. Nothing wrong with Samsung, but they are nowhere near some kind of saint in the marketplace. They've had their share of major release blunders. Screens, hinges, batteries, you name it.

Got a Samsung Flip 5 several months ago and the screen went belly up with lines and inky blots after only 3 weeks. They tried to say I sat on it or leaned against it wrong, etc. -- none of which occurred. They wanted almost $400 for the repair on an already $1000 phone. Nope, won't do it, and never Samsung again. Got the razr 2023 last week, love it, am hoping for better results than with the Samsung. I only open and close it about 20 times a day as a secondary phone.

You would have to open your phone 345 times a day for a year to reach 126k folds. Normal people open their phones around 20-50 times a day. At 50 times a day it would take almost 7 years to break the screen on the Razr. Even at 100 times it would take almost 3.5 years. Most people upgrade their phones every two years anyway. Samsung always makes good products and I would not expect anything less from them.

Yes I was very annoyed when I got halfway and they said they did a dust test in the middle of the folding test. Now the information is meaningless. Either dust up a brand new one before you fold or don't add dust at all when you fold. Anything else and the results really dont mean anything.

cool video! I was in the store last week, i watched a bunch of reviews for each of the new flips. The razr and the gflip 5, i was planning on getting to the store and making the choice on which to get when i got there. Needless to say, i left without a new phone. I dont think that the foldable screens are durable enough for me how they are presently being sold. I did not like that when they are open you can not only see the crease in the screen but there is a very prominent indent when you go over that part of the screen, they are not flat by any means and that bothered me. Tho to add, they market these phones for people who do quick tasks on their phone that can be done without opening the phone. So i understand why they do not make them with a higher fold number because the idea is to utilize the front screen to do most of your tasks. Its nice to see that at least what they are telling you isnt far from the truth with the durability.

I've been using a Razr 5G since its release 3 full years ago. It still feels like it's brand new; probably because being folded when in my pocket helps protect the screen. The hinge is as quiet as when I bought the phone; not 100% silent but Razr 5G videos that tested its decibel output sound very similar. Honestly I'm hesitant to upgrade because it seems like Motorola's hinge may have gotten worse here and not better? There isn't a point in upgrading to the Z Flip 5 since the Razr 5G doesn't have a crease, and already had a huge outer display which has certainly been as handy as all the reviews seem to be shocked by. lol But I've had these things for three years, and now the Razr 5G costs like $200 in good condition on eBay. So yeah, it feels like the flip phone we've all been waiting for is here! A used or refurbished Razr 5G. ;p

Have used almost every Flip and Fold since their 3rd generation. The screens are not as fragile as you think. The video here basically puts them through the ringer so of course it's going to have problems. But let's put it this way, for my flips and folds eventually the inner screen protector bubbles and needs to be replaced. Not a big deal, just buy a new one and slap it on. However, I rocked mine without the screen protector for a good month before replacing it and never had any issues. Unless you got long ass nails you shouldn't worry about anything. long ass nails would probably cause scratches, but no cracks or shatters.

They were subjected to the same test conditions. The fact that the Motorola took in dust and broke is kind of the point here - yes, the Samsung didn't have dust jammed in the screen, but that's because it did a better job protecting the screen from dust in the first place. If Motorola wants to do better here they should properly seal their hinge.
@SirNarax
@SirNarax 24 күн бұрын
@@bosstowndynamics5488 That's not the problem. The problem is that they are trying to verify the 400,000 folds and then introducing new variables partway through the test. We can infer that the Samsung has the better built hinge and is more resistant to dust but we cannot determine by how much. Both comparatively and exclusively. This is all to say it is a useful test but not a very scientific test.

i love the z fold 3 and 4 that I purchased but anyone want to guess why i had to buy the 4 in the first place? You bet ya...after a ton of folds it creates this weird light moisture bubble in the center. I am tempted to try and get the plastic for the fold replaced but then I get how much more use from it? of course the outside works well but I paid the money for what is on the unfolded side and open it more times than I care to count daily. I am done with folding phones for a while after this until durability improves because you can have a really nice candy bar and a brand new premium tablet every year with the amt being spent on replacing the fold. I need to revert back to the Note.

I have fold4 as a secondary phone. Wouldn't say I open it too often, but yesterday I notice a barely seen fine red-blue(green) lines on a crease. Do you have any idea what it can be? I'm really confused. I love folds and flips, but i worry a bit about this thing

so I recently discovered I am a fool, Have you tried just taking the inner screen protector off and simply buying a new one to put in it once you verify that fixed it? Yeah thought my fold was going bad until I saw a quick video showing how to replace it and that only the fold one was like "dont touch that" I thought we were not allowed to remove it without breaking the screan lol

I've been using Samsung phones ever since I switched from an iPhone 7, and I have absolutely no regrets about the product's quality. I've dropped my Z Flip 3 several times, and it's still sturdy. In contrast, when I dropped an iPhone once, its screen glass shattered. iPhones and Motorola phones seem to be popular mainly due to the influence of the North American market's sheer size. But as someone who prioritizes efficiency and reliability, Samsung phones consistently remain my top choice. Sony phones are also commendable.

Complete opposite from my experience 😅 I dropped my S20 once and the screen just shattered to pieces; plus I couldn't stand that the battery life would only last me 4 hours with heavy use. This was way back when the phone was less than a year old (~10 months). I switched to an iPhone 12 Pro, and I've been using it for the past 2 years with no problems. I drop it almost weekly and have never had scratches or breaks in the glass. Given I used tempered glass screen protectors on both phones. 🤔

@@LouiiDeeSamsung uses Gorilla Glass on all their phones' screens (not sure about budget ones mind, but definitely the flagships). IMHO Corning dropped the ball on their first generation of Gorilla Glass Victus, because my Note 9 survived me tripping over and accidentally pile driving it screen first into a pointy rock, but my Note 20 Ultra screen has little scuffs all over it from less abusive treatment (although I still drop it a lot, the screen has never had a direct high force impact). Apple meanwhile made a big deal over using their own design for the screen, which I suspect is part of the reason that, broadly, Samsung screens do seem to handle impacts better overall even if early Victus screens were an exception to that rule. (Fwiw I *don't* use any screen protector on any of my phones because these days Gorilla Glass is usually going to handle scratches phenomenally better than a cheap sheet of tempered glass, again early Victus screens being an exception, inherently fits better and I'm extremely sceptical of any kind of impact benefit from a thin sheet of very fragile cheap tempered glass loosely stuck on the phone)

I had expressed my thoughts about the Razr right after testing it, mentioning that the hinge didn't feel as smooth as I hoped. However, some people were quick to disagree with me. I believe their reaction might have been due to a few reasons: perhaps they were hoping to enjoy their purchase from Motorola and didn't want to admit any shortcomings, or they were just too eager to have the latest device and didn't want to wait for the King of flip phones AKA the Z Flip 5. It's also possible that they were outside the return policy for the Razr and wanted to reassure themselves that they made the right decision.

There are no shortcomings. What maniac is going to abuse their phone like that? Simply use your phone like a regular sane person and it should be fine. Any accidents just have insurance on it and get it fixed. At&t literally sends a tech to your house and the tech takes your phone and fixes it right in your driveway. Also with these trade in deals these companies are doing you'll likely not have your phone for more than a year and a half anyway.

@@SWACBUZZhaving insurance doesn't mean shit if we are talking about shortcomings from companies. Why should I be forced to compensate the trash from a company with insurance? Motorola promised 400k folds and only delivered 44k. That's a huge issue. People on average unlock their phone 150 times a day. With the huge screen on the outside, it's gonna be 80 folds each day. Lastly the US ain't the whole world and I don't think anyone is willing to switch a phone every two weeks (as repairs are very hard on foldables and they mostly get thrown away and replaced with a new device)
@pavan5502
@pavan5502 9 ай бұрын
@@eulehund99I disagree that a normal person folds and unfolds their foldable phone 150 times a day neither 80 times. I just did a small reading online (reddit), and the maximum folds and unfolds they mentioned is 50, so, Razr plus holds way better than expected until the end of its OS and security updates.
@SWACBUZZ
@SWACBUZZ 9 ай бұрын
@@eulehund99 44k for one phone only? This does not mean this phone won't last 400k folds. A better test would have been to do 3 phones each at a time and if all the Motorola phones fail around 40 to 50k then it would be more believable.
