My thoughts after using the Motorola ThinkPhone for a week...in this review I'll cover why I think this is your next phone...it has a lot to offer for a decent price and fantastic build quality. It's light, it's thin, it works well...it is definitely worth a look!

What a timely video concerning phone weight. My current Motorola Moto G Stylus 5g 2022 tips the scale at 215g, and it is easily the heaviest and largest phone I've ever owned (my bad). This morning Windows nostalgia overcame me and I took out my old Microsoft Lumia 640xl which weighs 171g, what a difference! It's almost exactly the height of the ThinkPhone and I for one can certainly appreciate your joy for the lightness and manageable size factor of this new phone. As for the battery life my Stylus 5g routinely clocks 10+ hours, 5000ma goes a long way with an efficient chip. That being said, the Lumia with only 3000ma could go a day and a half as well, the optimization of Windows code really sipping power. And the icing on the cake was a replaceable battery. Yes the case was plastic, but it was almost indestructible. I've had many Motorola phones and at a mid range price the updates lack of timeliness was something I could live with, as they have always delivered what they promised, a day late and a dollar short. I personally love the lock screen, no power consumed till needed, and lots of minor emails are dealt with right then and there, tap, gone, next. A ThinkPhone at $499 would be a consideration, but with a Google Pixel 7a at that price, even then it would be a hard sell...

The Carbon Fiber rear reminds me of the old Droid Turbo from 2014. That one came in the Ballistic Nylon and Carbon Weaved Fiber like this one.

"just need a phone to be a phone" - please don't completely overlook the Ready For desktop mode (where you connect the ThinkPhone to an external display). It's excellent and can literally replace the need for a PC.

Yeah, I mean it's the same chip in the Fold 4 and Flip 4 right now. It's still pretty darned good, and it has a lot of nice features.

Oh my God, my last Motorola was the Moto x pure. And getting an update to the next OS was ridiculous. Heck yes. For what this phone has for hardware, the price is phenomenal. And after a year it'll be in my ballpark. I actually like the back better than glass. Not cheap plastic , but not a crack magnet. Good review 👍

Okay, you've recently done videos on both the ThinkPhone and the Note 9, so you might be better positioned to answer this question. Currently on a Note 9 which is effectively "only" about 2 years old because it had a screen/battery replacement back then. Should I upgrade to the ThinkPhone?

I mean the battery is two years old but the processor is going to be limited. It depends on what you need. You get more years of support, but the Note 9 is still a premium feeling and looking device. If it still does what you need without lag, hold on until you find something. This display isn't as saturated as the Note one but it is 144hz. Depends on what matters to you.

Its a good phone. I like the 1300 nits brightness and the 60 watt charging with usb pd. Even one plus doesnt give you that. ( Its not pd its super vooc)

They give the software updates, like you said though. They give zero promise of when their devices are going to get updated. Their Edge Plus 2022 still waiting for Android 13 which is just absurd when you factor that even LG launched it for their devices and they're a defunct phone manufacturer.

Yep, I get it...I know that they haven't been good, but I'm on my second patch already here, May 2023...so all I can tell you is what is going on going forward. So far, so good.

Has grip to it. It's aramid weave. Nice texture. Nothing like glass.

I can't help but thinking that Motorola should make a proprietary lapdock to this phone. With such spec, it can easily be someone's only computer.

You don't need a proprietary lapdock. That's the beauty. Just get a NexDock and you're good to go for mobile use, and any USB-C desktop monitor at home or work for desktop use. No special tools needed.

I love the chop and twist but moto just isn’t reliable enough on the software updates. Moto z4 only one update, got the stylus 2021 again one update. Now the new moto stylus screen went down to 720 and 6.5 screen? I can’t deal with them anymore. I really want to like them again but even with this think thing. That think shield popped up on my stylus screen. They do have some nice plastic parts but I don’t think I’ll, get them again.

It's better than the Pixel 7...it's preference, and the camera is NOT better, but the phone overall, for me, is better.

@@StevealiciousTech Right. I have pixel 7 tho it's a great daily phone the display just feels underwhelming and dull compared to Samsung and iPhones. This one looks promising and also has this blackberry aesthetic to it when looking at the design. Hope it's as nice In person

So it's not AS saturated as those other ones, but it is a LOT brighter than the Pixel 7 display, those were...flat for some reason, so it's nothing like that. It does have that Blackberry aesthetic for sure! If you type in that code, you get money off as well.

I would request potential buyers of this device to check the Motorola forum on the edge 30 ultra (predecessor to this device launched at the end of 2022). The device as it stands today is still stuck on android 12 and has even had all security updates delayed. The phone has various bugs that remain unattended despite months of complaints from multiple users and the camera is sub par to what Motorola has advertised. The advertisements do not tell the truth. The customer care is terrible. Accessories, even basic items like the charger itself are unavailable for purchase from the market or Motorola's website itself. Buyer beware

Yeah moto isn't the best on updates. Even my edge 2022 doesn't have android 13. However you will get it eventually. If you don't care about timely updates then it's still a good option. What I like about moto is it's the only phone on the market that supports 60+watt charging that uses USB pd . If you care about fast charging moto is what you want.

@@bandrew8040 yes I can't complain about the charging issue. Great battery life and fast charging is the only thing I can really appreciate on the Motorola. But and this is a big but, we still are stuck on android 12. After all this time, Motorola started to release android 13 update (for the edge 30 ultra) but it was rolled back. There are security integrity issues that prevented banking and NFC applications from working. So again, users after waiting for this long (nearly android 14 release is scheduled) to get android 13 that is still buggy and nowhere near global release. This is a major problem that is completely unjustified to those who bought this device. Their team must be highly incompetent to allow such things to happen.

Whether my phone has the latest OS isn't my top priority. I'd place parameters like performance (multitasking without lags), reliability of fingerprint sensor and 5G network, call clarity, battery life (SOT) and build quality at the top of the list. A good quality camera would be a plus. Moto Thinkphone checks all those boxes for a business user. Of course there is no beating phones like S23 Ultra, iPhone 14 and above or even Pixel pro series in terms of camera quality. That said after sales service network and experience do matter. Motorola lags behind the competition on both updates and call quality. And that price range, there's no justification to buy this phone. Motorola makes decent phones but they just can't escape that budget mentality even for phones they charge higher prices for.

They have, but that doesn't mean they will. Call quality is fantastic on this phone. I doubt you could make a business phone and have the calls be bad. Plus they promise the updates, we shall see.

@@StevealiciousTech true that their call quality isn't horrible but Samsungs and Pixels have been better in my experience. The main issue is the updates and for some reason, Motorola doesn't think updates are a priority. Their security updates are supposed to be bi-monthly but it's more like every 4 months. That's just horrible and lazy on their part.

Motorola is the worst when it comes to updating on time. They make some really good phones but they just drop the ball when it comes to updates. Then you can't find accessories for their stuff. They need to get it together. Good looking device here though.

They have had issues, no denying...all I can say is so far, so good with this one...and Moto is trying a comeback here, so they have motivation to not stink with updates.
