Man that antenna seems a bit close, no? I would think it'd need a ground plane unless it's one that doesn't require one. ^^ This guy sells excellent radios by the way - some of my nicest XTS5000s have came from Mr. Snarlingrabiddog

Hey there! haha, yep, it was way too close for my liking. I took care of that, organized the nest of cords and wiring, got the VHF in as well, and it looks much better. The cords were (and are) hard to manage. The antenna doesn't require a ground but the units do. I have an exterior ground outside and routed the line to the cabinet from the back. I had to take it apart to get it all together. I'd like a small switching station and an adapter to join both XTL remote bricks so I can just toggle between the bands using the same head, but not sure it's possible. Thanks for the kind words and the plug buddy! I'm glad you're enjoying your radios. All the XTL's are going to be sold but the UHF. I'm renovating my shop so the XTL's have been put on the back burner for a bit :)

both mine are dual band hi gains on a rotor motor which actually helps just like on 10 Meters am/fm bands but I'm really into APRS THESE DAYS & digital uhf vhf like 800mhz bands I linked my first zello repeater setup thru one my Baofeng UV5R radios to pc sound card which repeats off my simplex to my zello app which is digital server based world wide band it's very neat indeed

Thanks :) This isn't the greatest set-up for a radio desk, but it was easy, fast and works well with remotes :)

I like your private UHF STATION very similar to mine only I have both UHF&VHF radios and my antennas are on my outside tower at 60ft like my duplex and simplex repeaters are

+Justin Berryman Thanks, I also have a 100-Watt UHF that's right under the VHF brick and it's switchable now. I just have to switch the cable. The antenna is tri-band, so it all works out.

Understandable I'm aware of ignition purpose but also work for vol agency. I'm also in a mini boat like you but not into sales lol. More of personal use and for agency. Just looking for pointers as I've caught heck with just one vehicle which happens to be remote head. It's been the darnedest deal. Came with it but was ignition only. Have attempted to make it by power button but it's strange. Any chance off board you know anyone who would know?

I really don't. XTL's are difficult animals and there are so many variables with mobiles, in order to address issues, the revision dates of the respective components have to be known; that is perhaps the most difficult aspect to nail down. It seems that nearly every XTL is different; that shouldn't be the case, but in my small dealings with them, it seems to be the norm rather than the exception. I've learned the hard way on these XTL's. Mine install and function without issue, but understanding the component variables have proved to be an expensive education that even at the end, is one that is never complete if you buy another or build another. After mine are gone, I'm out of the XTL game and will stick to portables. My profit margin is next to zero on these darned things.

Dumb question and I'd appreciate if you could get back to me. The programming for remote head is it set for blank, soft power? Should be in radio wide advanced. Also does the cps show two heads in the menu say 03 or 05 or just one?

The CPS should show how ever many heads you have on the system. It is default to 03 and 05. Most units have no more than two but an 03 head is a remote head built into a mic housing; an all-in-one if you will.

Also does the head power have both wires connected? The yellow and red to power?
@snarlingrabiddog5150

If it is base station, I hook red and yellow together because the yellow is for the ignition of a car and turns on and off with the key as you turn the car on. I maintain constant power on base stations and turn them off at the head. It depends totally on your application. The more heads you have the more wires and the more of a nightmare you create for yourself, but on a fire truck rig, dual heads are common for the big trucks; one in front, one in rear. Cable-running is paramount and you have to make sure nothing will break into the cables. The variables change with the platforms of application. I'm not an authority on the XTL units. I build the parts into packages, flash, upgrade firmware, program them in basic form and optimum menu configurations and sell them.
