I worked for Motorola after leaving Law Enforcement Career. I became the Lead Programmer for the Company and traveled all over the State doing this work. You are very correct about the Software, it can be very frustrating at times. Fortunately the Software would let you know when a change in one area affected another area of the programming. One needed to be on their game when working on LAN (Large Area Network) Systems. Many, Many Training Courses through Motorola for each Model of their radios. Loved the work, hated driving all over the State and listening to younger Cop's bitching about not being allowed to talk to everyone whenever they wanted to. I.E. The Cop's complaining about being Controlled, ironic.

Most excellent review of the Motorola XTL5000. I agree, the Motorola speaker is also the best I have ever experienced. It is the loudest and most clear of any speaker I have ever used. I have 4 of them.

Great video! My biggest complaint about Motorola is the software and programming. I'm glad you touched on that...most people wouldn't have a clue how to navigate the software, and it's a steep learning curve, imo. It is because of this that I'm slowly replacing my Motorola radios with Kenwood equipment.

I absolutely love my XTL 5000! I use mine in 800mhz for volunteer fire and ems. It is a tank and will hold up under any condition. I never thought about using the UHF version for GMRS. Thanks for sharing. And you are correct about using motorola CPS programming software. It is a pain in the buttocks.

Thank you, I like reading your hate mail❤ Jordi

Good Vid Randy. That’s one heck of a radio to be sure. Being Commercial, the Features are somewhere out in the stratosphere, I dare say for a lot of us using GMRS. My family & friends we off-road, camp, hunt, fish and outdoor adventure with are very satisfied with much lesser priced GMRS consumer- Base & HT radios.

At Verizon our big trucks used a massive radio similar? Complex use by guys who doubtfully graduated from high school and a base unit which never worked… they switched to wonderful flip phones that were two years old. Those worked on the Verizon cellular system. My personal phone was AT&T. When they got lost, I lead the way because I had an iPhone with a map. FYI. The last I saw of the old Motorola radios…in the dumpster.

Midland MicroMobile MXTA26 vs. Wouxun ANO-050G comparison, PLEASE! I purchased both in my quest for a sub-1.5 SWR reading. Sadly the Midland did not hit the target with a best SWR of low channels of 1.95. High power channels were even worse. The Wouxun straight out of the wrapper hit a SWR of 1.01 on low power and 1.25 on high power on a Midland MXT575 radio. The Wouxun is even $20 cheaper than the Midland.

The APX series would definitely be the "ultimate" radio. It's unfortunate the XTL was discontinued and marked EndOfLife
@royrobinson46362 жыл бұрын
No doubt the XTL-5000 is a very high-quality and powerful radio! I really like the encryption function. 😎 Personally, it far exceeds our rural neighborhood GMRS radio network needs of 4-5 square miles. Hopefully, we can upgrade our small neighborhood network to digital (DMR) radios in the near future. I believe a digital signal will soon be the preferred and new standard for future two-way communications.
@W2IRT2 жыл бұрын
And therein lies another problem. Digital incompatibilities. The XTL/XTS series uses P-25 digital, which is not compatible with DMR (Morotola's Moto-TRBO system). It's dumb. DMR is actually a good system, but nothing beats analog as far as I'm concerned. It just works.

Ah good old CPS. Still keep an old laptop around for programming radios. Yes CPS is much more powerful and flexible than consumer radio software, but I liked that. I could make it do anything, usually in several different ways. And it generally worked. The whole thing felt designed by people who knew what a radio was. Contrast that to the WTH software soup with consumer radios. And now Chirp seems to be all anyone cares about any more.

I liked your off road videos. The shit everyone talks about radios becomes a pissing contest and evidently people are enjoying the drama. The thing about the radio community is it isn’t really a community, GMRS’ers vs CB’ers vs HAMs and very few of them are even willing to help someone get into the hobby! Then they bitch at each other and try to measure antennas which is gay AF. Same shit everywhere I guess. I do enjoy your videos but I would like to see you getting out there on the trail as well! Happy Veteran’s Day!
