It’s been seven years and I’m here again to say literally amazing, your music changed my life

i watch this video almost every single day and it never gets old. the melody is so catchy and freaking amazing. i tried learning this song and its pretty hard to do. i really admire Dylan and his style of playing. i can spot one of his songs from a mile away. he is so unique and his playstyle is amazing. when you watch him play it seems like its literally effortless for him lol. Thank you for your music, Dylan Ryche, and you absolutely deserve that first place title from the CGF.

The musical genius to compose this masterpiece. The composure to play it live flawlessly at a national competition and win (while flashing a cheeky smile to the audience). The humility to do it in board shorts 😂. FREAKING LEGEND!!! 😳🔥🔥🔥❤️

Yeah, I wish I had more of Holmes's repartee on tape, but it's sort of scattered around in a way that's hard to use. He does these funny poems as well, but I never had my camera running while he was doing one. He's the MC at Hugh's Room in Toronto.

@motoronna12 жыл бұрын
Ewan won in 2009. As far as I know, nobody ever competes again once they've won first place. I don't think there's a rule against it, but winning tends to help launch the musician into a professional career, and they come back as a main stage act rather than a contestant.

@rohandisley9 жыл бұрын
what an absolute tune! Also how do you play with nails that long, especially the thumb
@kwork6365 жыл бұрын
It's called a built-in guitar pick. ;) Many guitarists (especially finger-style) tend to have longer nails on their picking hand, but keep their fret hand nails nice and short (since there it actually interferes with fingering the frets).

how are finger style competitions graded? I am getting ready to graduate with a biology degree and am contemplating going back to study music classical and jazz anyone done this ?
@motoronna9 жыл бұрын
+Keelan Bozman The judges are generally drawn from the mainstage performers, I think five every year. Don Ross is usually one of them - the others vary. Basically you have to be both highly skilled and very original, in other words, distinctive. Theoretically you can win with original arrangements, but in practice you have to perform original compositions. And if your tune doesn't grab the judges in about the first thirty seconds, you're cooked.
@keelanbozman48309 жыл бұрын
How do they judge? Tempo? Finger Independence? In other words what makes them win other than being able to shred!?
@motoronna9 жыл бұрын
+Keelan Bozman Being able to shred is the least of it. Think about the word "distinctive", and maybe listen to Calum performing "The Channel".
@mpare238 жыл бұрын
+Keelan Bozman I switched before I graduated lol ... I am currently finishing my Masters in classical performance. I e-mailed Don Ross for an interview one time and he happily met before a concert in London. Great guy, will tell you everything, I encourage you to message him. Depends where you are from of course (I am assuming you're Canadian sorry). They judge these competitions based on artistry, it doesn't matter how your technique is (although it helps).
@keelanbozman48308 жыл бұрын
Thats awesome. I would love to meet Don! I am currently doing one of his lesson sets on Jam Play. Any plans after the masters program? I have thought of going back for a music degree (I graduate with biology in May) I really want to get into music more in a place that I enjoy living. Possibly teach at a university level, tour, etc. Do you regret your decision to go to school for this?
@john401911 жыл бұрын
Ewan no longer does competitions at all, I've heard this in an interview.

Who ARE these "dislike" folks? LOL
@motoronna11 жыл бұрын
Statistical anomalies? Persons of deafness? Dyslexic? (meant to click "like") But seriously, I don't mind if someone doesn't like something and leaves a politely critical comment - but simply clicking the dislike button tells me nothing. I don't know whether they don't like the musician and why or whether they think my video is crap. Why bother?

Its not a competition for those who are very well known, professional musicians. If it were, you'd have the likes of Don Ross, Antoine Dufour and many more competing with their years of musicianship under their belts, and no offense meant to the talent of gents and ladies like Mr Ryche, but would blow them out of the water. Ewan Dobson would be one of the judges at this or a main stage performer if anything.
@rbuettner10011 жыл бұрын
Justin Bieber didn't make it this year?
