Having seen these age in an import repair center environment among other peers, I will defend the S-type as an excellent car. They gained an unfair reputation due to a lot of lousy owners who treated them like Chevrolet Impalas and never serviced them, but when people did take care of these they lasted virtually forever and were extremely satisfying to drive. Aside from a few items, they were quite reasonable to work on too. The V8’s big problem was the timing chain setup with defective guide rails and tensioners that failed. That can be preventively updated though, and if you invest in having the most updated components installed, the V8 is solid. The V6 was great and relatively easy to live with. I would much rather own one of these than a 5-series or A6 of the era.

These came out when I was 20 and I loved them. Now that I’m in my mid-40s I would love to buy one but they’re just not practical for daily use anymore. Unless I’m wrong.
